Gibson Acoustic 50s LG-2 Acoustic-electric Guitar - Vintage Sunburst Reviews

6-string Acoustic-electric Guitar with Spruce Top, Mahogany Back and Sides, Mahogany Neck, and Rosewood Fingerboard - Vintage Sunburst

The Gibson '50s LG-2 delivers big sound in a comfortable performance package. The output of this "little giant" is akin to that of a J-45. Yet this mighty mini has the detail and intimacy you only get from a small-bodied guitar. The '50s LG-2's scalloped-braced Sitka spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides produce a rich, mellow sound with a snappy response. Acoustically, it delivers big dynamics and character. And plugged in, an onboard LR Baggs VTC pickup system lets you take that premier Gibson tone to the stage. If you're a folk guitarist or fingerstylist who's after a comfortable player for the stage and studio, the '50s LG-2 comes primed to please.

Got me playing acoustic again - my Tele is jealous

By Chelsea from Virginia on August 10, 2023 Music Background: casual guitar player/enthusiast

This guitar is fantastic. It's comfortable and not too big, but it has a bright, full, complex voice. I sold a 00 Martin with a tropical hardwood back and sides so I could get this; the difference is night and day. The Martin had a much darker tone to it; when I strummed my first chords on this LG-2, I was blown away by how layered and melodic this guitar sounded in comparison, and it has only opened up in the month or so since then. I love the chunky vintage soft-V neck - it's one of the reasons I wanted this guitar specifically and is super comfortable, even for my small hands.

I have to thank my sales engineer Jerrod DeMott, who helped me snag the specific LG-2 I had my eye on and held onto it for a few days until I was ready to have it shipped home. This is the third guitar I've purchased from him, and with every purchase he has helped me out in every way he could. Best service ever and just a great human. The guitar is perfectly set up, gorgeous, and always in tune, which is impressive given the Southern humidity where I live. I couldn't be happier and am so glad I splurged on this little acoustic.

tl;dr - I love playing acoustic guitar again because this LG-2 is so comfortable, sounds so good, and looks so nice. Photo of my dog Gibson, named after my first Gibson acoustic, with my new LG-2.

Gibson LG 2 50’s

By Sweetwater Customer on July 14, 2023 Music Background: Musician for 40+ years

First time purchasing a guitar from Sweetwater. The process was flawless and it arrived in perfect condition. The problem I thought was the neck dimensions on this model not having played one before I found it to be too fat for my liking and was going to return it until I gave it some time. Now I can't put this guitar down. I have always played C shape neck guitars but this Taper V is incredible! I can play it for hours and not experience hand cramping . The guitar rings loud and clear with a pick and finger picking is so easy! I highly recommend this 50's LG2 and the case it arrived in is beautiful and extremely sturdy .

Gibson LG 2

By David from Kingston, NY on February 16, 2023 Music Background: Playing guitar for years.

This is a very, very well made guitar. It's worth every penny. Sounds great. If you are finger style guitarist, every note is clear across all strings. The bass is better than described in YouTube demos.

Gibson LG-2

Very pleasant smaller guitar. Good blues acoustic, fret board with takes getting used to for finger picking,
seems to be very well constructed.

Amazing

This is an amazing guitar with wonderful tone! This small body packs a beautiful punch.

Brilliant reissue

First off, kudos to Devin Cunningham for being such an awesome rep. this guitar was backordered, but he kept me in the loop throughout the process. Been a Gibson player both electric and acoustic for years. Have owned many vintage models along the way. this LG-2 is like scoring a 'never played stumbled upon in the attic' find from 60 some years ago. Amazingly big tone and volume from a smaller body. Against my L-00 this sounds like a dreadnaught. Plays like a dream. I've owned vintage LG-2s, and this is the best sounding one I've ever had.

Amazing guitar !

By Theo Corfiatis from Fair Lawn, NJ on August 10, 2022 Music Background: Composer, Performer, Sound Engineer

It just arrived today, very well packed in multiple boxes inside each other. I was reluctant to buy a guitar online after having bought all my other guitars from shops after trying them out. Thanks to Brian Loney's help I decided to take a chance and just get this guitar. I was very pleasantly surprised. The photos don't do this guitar justice, it looks amazing and sounds amazing. Just blown away by the sound of this 'Concert' sized guitar after comparing it to a couple of Martins I have. The sound of the LG-2 is very clear with lots of mid frequencies, making it ideal for fingerpicking. My Martins are nice guitars, but they have a more scooped sound, making them great for flat picking and strumming, but the LG-2 is very clear in the mids, and very responsive to a light touch while fingerpicking. Each string is very well balanced, so that I don't have to compensate by picking certain strings harder than others to get a good tone. It just plays perfectly.

The neck is more chunky than the standard Martin slim C necks on the guitars I own. When I first played the LG-2 I thought, this neck is too chunky. As I played it, I realized that it is in fact easier to play than the Martins for a couple of reasons. The LG-2's slight V shape (it's very subtle) allows me to easily hook my thumb over the low E effortlessly, so I get crystal clear bass notes from thumbing the low E, which takes a little more effort on the C shaped necks. Secondly, the LG-2 has a slightly narrower neck than my martins, as well as having a 24.75" scale length, which makes it incredibly easy to play complex open chord shapes with a 4 - 5 fret spread. I can do it on my Martins. but I need to use lighter gauge strings. I realized that the LG-2 came with 12s which play as easily as 11's on my other guitars.

The sound of the LG-2 is very resonant and rich in harmonics, with great sustain ~ 30 seconds on the low E, with crisp punchy bass. I listened to a lot of video demos, by music shops wanting to sell the LG-2 on youtube. Most of them were so badly recorded, they made the guitar sound really boxy and boomy. I tried to find an LG-2 in the local music shops and no one had one. Listening to the actual guitar in my hands, it does not sound boxy or boomy at all. It is seriously incredibly well balanced tonally.

The only thing I haven't tested out is the internal pickup. I don't gig any more, so I don't need an internal pickup. I always mic up my acoustics with high quality stereo mics and run them into a good discrete preamp, with a little hardware compression just to even out the notes. I might add extra info on the pickup system if I get around to ever using it.

I've had bad experiences with Gibson guitars in the past, one in particular, a Les Paul, which literally had everything wrong with it. I realized that Gibson's quality control in the past, was less than adequate. But Brian assured me that Sweetwater does a 55 point check on every guitar they get in. It paid off! the LG-2 has no faults or issues whatsoever as far as I've tested. It came in a traditional brown Gibson hard shell case with pink fluffy lining, just like my Les Paul. Plus Sweetwater gave me humidity stabilizer sachets by D'addario.

All up, a great purchase, and I'd thoroughly recommend this guitar to anyone who's into fingerpicking (Blues, Folk, Jazz, Rock, or anything else), or even strumming or flatpicking, (it accomplishes those tasks very well too).

First time buying a guitar from Sweetwater

By Betty DeYeso from Boston on February 14, 2021 Music Background: Professional Musician

First off , Kudos to Brian Dillon, Sales Engineer, for being so helpful, accommodating, and follow up with my purchase. I bought my Gibson 50's Lg2 , 7.29.20.

The guitar I was interested in ( and bought ) was a "blemished" Gibson 50's Lg2 with a "gauge" on the front near the pickguard. This was/is (for me) a high end priced guitar even at the "blemished price" so , yes, I was very nervous about buying this online. I emailed Sweetwater and had a phone conversation with Brian Dillon. The guitar , although blemished, would still have the 2 yr. Sweetwater warranty and return policy if not satisfied .

Long story short, I bought the guitar, received it in perfect condition, set up was spot on right out of the box. Oh....and the "gauge" near the pickguard was a mark that was barely noticeable. The sound and playability of the guitar is just what I hoped for . I'm very happy with my Gibson 50's Lg2, Brian Dillon, and with Sweetwater. Well done Sweetwater.

Small Body, Big Sound

By Mark from Oklahoma on January 16, 2021

This was my first guitar purchase through Sweetwater. I was hesitant at first wondering if I was buying a dud. Then I read about how much care goes into each guitar that is sold on Sweetwater. My worries began to ease. Shortly after ordering, Jacob, my sales engineer, sent me pictures of the guitar being prepped to send my way. This definitely added to my excitement. Once I strummed the strings for the first time I realized Sweetwater is the way to go. The setup right out of the case was perfect, there were no blemishes, and it played like a dream. Sweetwater is my lifelong music store. I have never seen a business value it's customers the way Sweetwater does. As for the guitar, it's my #1. It sounds much bigger than it plays and it is the most comfortable guitar I have ever played. This guitar is a finger-style players delight but a strummer will love it just as much. If you're second guessing Sweetwater, stop right now. If you're second guessing the guitar, jam on the brakes. Sweetwater is a premium music store and this LG2 is a singer. I hope this helps you with your decision!
