A great keyboard with some minor issues

By NS

The keybed feels great to me. The keys are stiff, maybe overly so, but it does loosen up over time. After 2+ years it still feel great.

The sound engine in my opinion sounds good, but the pianos do seem to be on the bright side by default. But it's easy enough to EQ them using onboard effects. I'm a fan of the e pianos, wurleys, etc. synths are usable but there's not a lot of control there.

The midi integration is fantastic though not many ways to route CC just due to limited interface, but this can easily be used to route other synths for live performances. It's easy to route midi channels to different areas on the keyboard as well.

So why knock a star off? My unit has a LOT of pops and cracks when sending the signal from the audio outs. Unfortunately their suggested fix was "just use the USB out"…. For live performances, when has anyone been able to send USB to FOH? Fortunately it is possible to use the headphone out, but then I can't monitor. So had the audio outputs worked correctly the first time, this would have been a 5 star for me, instead I'm forced into workarounds and for the price I paid, it's unacceptable. But it's beyond warranty of course, and it's not worth paying all that money to ship this monstrosity around.

Finally, what I was looking for

By Jason from Denver

All I needed was a MIDI controller with a keyboard action that I didn't hate. While the bar seems low, it's proven surprisingly difficult to clear. I'd wasted time and money with the usual suspects from Native Instruments and Arturia, but the spongy/mushy feel of the keys was always a turnoff. While I've heard great things about the Kawai VPC1, but its physical dimensions (it has a bit of a five-head) made it a nonstarter with everything else on my desk. The Numa X Piano GT, however, ticked all the right boxes for me.

The action feels fantastic and is a joy to play. I no longer feel like I'm playing in quicksand. I was initially skeptical of the joystick controllers (vs traditional modwheel), but I've grown to really like them. I don't use the onboard sounds at all, but I suppose it's nice they're there in case they ever come in handy. The unit overall is remarkably low profile and svelte, given how good it feels to play. It's also really handsome with the wood accents on the sides, if that matters to you.

The only issue I had was one key at the low end (G1) felt noticeably less sensitive than its neighbors. Fortunately, Studiologic added a per-key velocity sensitivity adjustment in a firmware update a while back, so it was a minute's work to get that errant G back in shape. Other than that, it's been flawless. I do wish they offered this action in a purpose-built MIDI controller, eschewing the onboard sounds (especially if it meant shaving a bit off the price) but I'm still very happy with it.

Wow! Glad I bought this! Great key bed feel and sounds.

By Kurt E. from Anchorage, Alaska
Music Background: Lifelong guitarist and drummer, keyboards

I am extremely happy with this keyboard. The real wooden keys feel great for authentic acoustic piano, and the 4 sound engines and layering possibilities can get you just about any sound you need for the studio and gigging. The piano sounds are as good or better than my Nord Piano 5, the organ sounds not quite as good as my Nord Electro 6D, but certainly enough for my needs. I don't use the synth samples often, but they are there and lots of them. All the samples are customizable and save-able in the menus, plus you can use the Numa sound manager software to add more sounds and organize them however you need. I play this through JBL 305p's or Yamaha HS5's. It's on the heavy and bulky side, so I bought their Numa compact X se for playing out and equally impressed with it. I sold on Studiologic now.

Great feel and sounds

By Sweetwater Customer

Form factor: I love how this is the bare minimum. Relatively speaking, it's just large enough to support the keybed and the sound engine. Easy to move around, and while it's heavy, it's not unwieldy and the weight is well balanced.
Keys: stellar… best keys I've used in a keyboard. I've had it for well over 2 years with pretty much daily use. They do get a little easier to play over time but they retain that weight and rebound that drew me in.
Sounds: this is a little more subjective, but I love the marks, wurlies, etc. The piano tones, which initially felt weak to me, have actually grown on me quite a lot. They are easy to dial in/out with onboard controls. When I did a comparison between the piano tones and some VST samples I have, I initially liked the samples more on their own, but after doing a mix for a recording (using the midi and sound engine together to capture the same performance), the artist and I agreed the Numa sat better and was a little easier to work with.
Everything else: the menus on the Numa are dead simple to understand and that simplicity is part of the value. Updating via the app is super easy as well. The app doesn't really "unlock" anything within the device itself, but it's great to have backups if this thing were to be damaged on the road.

Great Digital Piano

By Miles B.
Music Background: Recording engineer, song writer, demo music producer

I love the feel and sounds of this piano. The keys are very realistic when comparing it those if my Yamaha upright. I've had other weighted pianos, but this is by far the best and most natural.

I was a little disappointed with the small push button power switch for a piano in this price range.

Overall I love it!

Quality Issues with Studiologic

By Timothy M. from Aldie, VA

This was my second digital piano from Studiologic and the second time I encountered a broken key that was not functioning properly. It arrived with the high C key making a very audible clicking sound when pressing it hinting at the possibility that the escapement or key bed has issues.

It feels heavy and looks rock solid, but they need better quality control. It is too expensive to have to ship something back that heavy to get it repaired. Great and well thought out accessories, too which I had to return.

Pianos sounded great but the other sounds were underwhelming or average. If the company can get their reliability and QC issues under control, they have a real winner. I wanted to really love it.

Fantastic performance keyboard

By Sweetwater Customer

I've had this for about a year and it has been rock solid. The keys feel fantastic, best of any keyboard I've played (and I've been through probably a dozen of them in the last decade).

The sound engine is also solid. Like always, there are a couple duds but the sounds that were important for me were pianos, wurly, EP, and organs. For those who want to perform keyboard instruments it nails it. I rarely use the symphonic and bass/guitars and have found the pads and synth sounds are good, even if they leave a lot to be desired compared to a fully dedicated synth.

The onboard effects are very usable and the navigation takes like a grand total of ten minutes to figure out. Form factor was basically perfect for me.

All in all, I can highly recommend this one. I hope SL continues support for years to come. The numa app also makes updates and patch saving super easy. The onboard mixer makes it also easy to bring in other keys or synths for easy mix control without needing another device and power source and cables (making gigs a breeze)

Almost Perfect Stage Piano Not a Workstation

By Mike
Music Background: Aux keys player for church

This Keyboard is excellent. It has arguably, THE best stage piano actions for weighted keys on the market right now, and the samples/sound engine it uses are excellent. This thing is highly tweakable and already comes preloaded with hundreds of sounds and you can layer four different sounds at once using the basic interface, which is something I greatly appreciate. It has two major drawbacks that keep it from being perfect. First is the UI. The UI is a little clunky and takes a little getting used to. Many of the knobs and buttons on the Numa GT have multiple functions which can be confusing at first for some. Also, many settings are buried in menus that you have to scroll and click through to tune this thing how you want, so switching settings on the fly can be tough if you don't already have a scene setup. The second flaw is a subjective one, but in my opinion, this thing is a bit surprisingly heavy, so if you plan to use it for gigs, I highly recommend a wheeled case for this because lugging it around on your back or shoulder is going to get old after a while. All in all, for $ or less, this one is hard to beat. My Yamaha CP88 is slightly more expensive, but the Numa X does everything it can do and maybe even a little more. If the Numa had a UI and quick controls like the ones on the CP88, it would be perfect. But as it stands right now, it's one of the best stage pianos out there.

I'd give her 6 stars if I could! (Updated review)

By Thomas S. from Kingsford, MI
Music Background: Small time, do it all, musician!! Old musician, that is!

OK, I've had the GT for about 2 weeks, and wow, wow, WOW! Understand that I have been performing since the early 80's, which translates into a fair amount of keyboards from several manufacturers. This however, is my first from Studiologic. It took a little while for me to make the decision to buy this keyboard, or any keyboard for that matter, as I'm not exactly a young musician any longer. That said, this is the best musical purchase I have ever made. I own the Roland RD-2000, and was never able to feel this comfortable with it as I am with the NUMA after only two weeks. I've installed NUMA Manager on my laptop and EASILY did the following: Updated the keyboard firmware, added all available FREE sounds to its library, and set up what I anticipate to be my live performance Favorites!!! People, this is coming from a 63 year old musician. Once you understand, not what, but how each button works, this thing is a breeze to navigate. Finally!! I'm actually excited to play this thing out live. No regrets here! Bravo Studiologic, bravo Italia!!

Wow! Great job Studiologic!!

By Thomas S. from Upper Peninsula Michigan
Music Background: Singer, Songwriter, Keyboardist - Since 1980

My initial reaction is a very positive one. Love the sounds, and love the action. I think I may even like the feel more than my Roland RD-2000, and that is saying something! I've only had the NUMA X Piano GT for one day, so I plan on coming back with a more accurate review in the future, but I will tell you, right out of the box this thing is impressive for its price-point!! To top it all off, the service from Sweetwater sales (Josh Kattner) is top notch! My little room is beginning to look like a Sweetwater showcase, although mine is much messier!

Very, very happy

By Sweetwater Customer

I wanted a keyboard with a piano feel and sound - and that's what I got. Super nice. Coming from a Roland FA-08 it took a few days to get used to. Keyboard sensitivity is adjustable.
The piano sounds are fantastic, from the Steinways to the Fazioli, etc. This package also includes a triple pedal which does not slide around. So there is my full piano feel.
Some of the other sounds are great as well, but I do not use them enough to pass full judgement.
USB connection does midi and audio. That is very convenient. I can stream with a simple cable youtube on my cellphone and play along. Or, I can record myself with the cellphone with good sounds quality - no computer needed.
Sweetwater did an excellent job with the sales - I am very pleased.
When I received the keyboard, I had some questions and emailed to Studiologic. They answered in a day to my satisfaction. Very, very happy.

Studiologic won me over with the Numa X Piano GT

By Zac
Music Background: Professional piano player

I have been a long time Nord Piano and Kawai MP series user so I was looking for another good Stage Piano with good action and great sounds. The Nord Pianos are great sound but the action is quite there with the MP series Kawais and the Kawais don't sound as good or diverse as the Nord.

Enter the Studiologic Numa X Piano GT. It has a superb wood TP400 action, much better than any other Stage Piano I've played other than the MP11SE, and probably weighted just as well. It's super playable, extremely expressive, and has a beautiful finish on the keys. Plus it is very quiet and just an absolute pleasure to play. Then the sounds, which at first, are not as warm as the Nord, as clean as the Kawai, and can sound a bit tinny in the mid range, however, all the detail is there. The behavior is spot on and is as good as anything Nord is doing and much more 'alive' than the Kawai samples. Plus, Studiologic allows significant EQ and tone adjusting to dial in the sounds. The behavior of the samples with the action is first class. There are even quite authentic pedals sounds, duplex resonance sounds, key on and off sounds. Very authentic and 'alive' feeling and sounding. Truly a beautiful instrument to play acoustic pianos on. Then there is the Numa app and sample library for free sample updates and upgrades, like Nord. I've noticed the newer samples are even better than the samples that have come pre-installed, which a great sign that Studiologic is improving their sampling/modeling even further. The other huge benefit to the Numa X Piano GT is the built in audio interface, which makes running VSTs a simple USB/midi cable from the board to your computer. Truly cool proof.

With the details of the action (wood construction, beautiful ivory and ebony finish, smooth and quiet), the details of the samples, especially the acoustic pianos, the variety of piano samples, the updatability of samples with the sample library, and the audio interface making VSTs a breeze, it's a total win win package. I'm now a massive fan of Studiologic and will probably always own one. Also, as a side, Studiologic customer service is first rate with same day or next day at the latest responses from Gianni himself, who is behind development of the Numa X Piano line. Well done Studiologic!

I'm Extremely Disappointed

By Avery

I'm just so disappointed in this thing, and the worst part is, I don't think I can return it now. It feels great. It does. It's one of the best piano actions I have felt on a digital piano. I love it for that. It also sounds really great through headphones. But I have tried to hook it up to my Roland keyboard amplifier and no matter what I do I cannot get it to sound like a natural piano. It has this weird electronic tone to it that makes every piano sound like it has some sort of ePiano mixed in. I think the return date has passed, largely because I have been trying so many different ways to get it to sound decent. But I have failed and I would almost rather go back to my 10-year-old $400 Casio piano at this point. Probably just stick with Yamaha in the future. :(

Numa X Piano GT - Very Nice

By Brian W. from LEES SUMMIT, MO

I am really enjoying my X Piano GT but here's my story - experience: When I first received the keyboard it took me all of 10 minutes to find that one of the keys had a crunching noise. I played it for a few minutes as was worried I would not like the touch as it seemed heavier than what I wanted but knew I had to return it for a board that was right from the get go. I am glad I did. To start, Sweetwater is top notch. They shipped the new Keyboard and it was intransit prior to me even getting the first one back to Fedex. I had the RAN but it took me a day to box everything back up real nice in order to ship it back. Meanwhile the replacement keyboard was already on the truck. I also had ordered a second pedal not realizing one was included so I also shipped that back. Sweetwater gave a RAN for both no questions asked. Sweetwater earns big Kudos! I set the new keyboard up and plugged it. I have a Studio One Six setup. I recorded off with the first piano sound for use with some vocals. The touch is heavy, so maybe there are some passages that could be too fast but to me it not worth worrying about it hell my baby grand is slower, but the Numa X GT is smoot and amazed me with the detail of expression I was hearing and seeing in both audio and midi being recorded. No doubt its 10x to 100x better than my old Roland board is even capable. It doesn't matter playing whether internal sounds or plugins after playing it for just a day it just feels right. Usually I have to record a bunch or takes, but the very first take and I was done...not sure if I was luck or what but it was hard not to like the result. I'm not sure how good all the internal sounds are and if they are worth it, they sound and feel good to me but I am not expert in piano sounds. I just bought it to use as both a versatile studio controller stage piano that I could also use occasionally for gigs if I wanted. So maybe the SL88 is a better choice for you if you are going to keep it in the studio IDk. Also, I haven't figured out all the settings, routing, etc. I haven't had the time for that I have just been having fun playing it. So, at this point what I think is the Numa X Piano GT is hard to beat as a good versatile choice for those wanting expressive detail with that natural piano feel. I give this purchase five stars minus a half star for having to return the first one. I hope this helps.

Even the piano teacher loves it!

By Walter D. from Phoenix, Arizona
Music Background: Composer, arranger, recordist

Ever since finding out about the Fatar TP-400W ES (wood key, escapement) keybed a few years back I've wanted to try one, but never could justify the even-more-than-Nord price of the Dexibell H10 -- to the best of my knowledge the only piano/keyboard with that particular keybed prior to the top-end Numa (although several previous Numa releases as well as the SL88 Grand use the TP-400W, not to mention the Dexibell S9). I've heard so much about the different "realistic" and "wood key" actions out there but have never been particularly enamoured of the sound demos I've heard. Dexibell has, IMHO the hands-down (ha!) best piano sounds available, although we are very blessed to live in a time of a _lot_ of really good piano sounds! But Dexibell has not (yet) come out with the "perfect" form factor digital piano for my needs! I think the S3 Pro is a phenomenal gigging piano and the S7 Pro is a studio workhorse, but neither of these have the key action I want! OTOH, the online demos I'd heard of this Studiologic Numa X Piano GT left me nonplussed that they picked the right keyboard but the sounds weren't so great.

But then three things happened: 1) Studiologic released a free-download VST version with a couple dozen of the main sounds from the Numa X (now I'm surprised), 2) so I let my buddy YouTuber know about the VST and he told me about how he always sets his Action/Touch setting to "light" (now I'm curious), and finally 3) one of the (Italian-language) Studiologic videos talked about the importance of the lower-velocity piano sounds and getting that kind of subtlety in performance -- and then demo'd just that (and now I'm hooked!). I realised that most of the demos I'd heard were the loud banging away at the keys Art Tatum style (which is great, don't get me wrong) but not the intricacies of a Leos Janacek or the whisper of a Bill Evans.

So I ordered the Numa X Piano GT with no small amount of trepidation. By this point I've heard a lot of high praise for the key action so I figure it can't be that bad (?) and it seems like the pianos should at least be workable... but am I just sinking a couple grand when I should have really just gone another couple grand into the Nord Grand?

I was and remain pleasantly shocked. The keyboard action really is as good as I was hearing from so many (double kudos for Jacob Dupre at Sweetwater for identifying that this is really a "pianist's keyboard" and for his brilliant performance of Ravel that highlights the intricacies and subtleties that this instrument is capable of far better than the vast majority of other video demos out there!) and the pianos, in particular, are indeed very good and very versatile. I do still prefer some of the Dexibell pianos (in particular), but now I can use the Studiologic as a controller for my beloved Dexibell when needed! And there is a much wider array of other interesting and useful sounds in the Numa than Dexibell standard fare. Also kudos to Studiologic that (like Dexibell and Nord) there is a (slowly) expanding library of additional and very good quality sounds available at no extra charge!

The real coup d'grace, as mentioned in the title, is when the kids' piano teacher came over to give the new marvel a whirl and even she -- acoustic piano or nothin' snob notwithstanding -- was impressed!

Some quick comparisons with the rest of the rig: The "ivory feel" of the Numa's TP-400W ES is much more subtle than the TP-40GH of the S7 Pro. The escapement likewise is very subtle, not like a big notch but more like just a little extra drop at the bottom of the travel. The actual let-off is very smooth and fast without being springy. It feels simply superb to play -- extremely pianistic and much easier to play long and/or difficult pieces than any other non-acoustic piano I've ever had. Also demonstrably easier to do trills and repeats than other keybeds. I also have the Action/Touch setting at Hard which gives me the most realistic response for my playing style and material, definitely taking advantage of those lower velocities but getting that nice Beethoven slam when I want it! The stock piano sounds are good but not my favourite (though again this is like saying I prefer the Testarossa to the Countache -- oh poor me) but are certainly very good and on par with my beloved Dexibell after some tweaking.

The Kurzweil K2700, on the other hand, has the Fatar TP-40L and some (for a synthesiser workstation) really superb pianos. I got my K2700 about 6 months before the Numa (and only a year after my initial order!) and was very pleased both with the key action and the quality of the sounds (as I knew I would be with Kurzweil). One thing I like about the K2700, in particular, is how the keyboard is _not_ very pianistic (although still nicely weighted), which I find desirable for playing a variety of instruments using the K2700 primarily for its multi-timbral and synthesis capabilities for scoring and layered sound design. But a funny thing happened when I got the Numa; all of a sudden, the key action of the K2700 and its prized pianos samples felt and sounded like tinker toys. Again, I use the K2700 much more for orchestrating and synthesis, but to suddenly have that degree of contrast presented was really surprising to me. Granted, I'm still exceedingly far beyond pleased with the K2700 for its workhorse purposes! But whereas I used to relax and play the Bristol or Velvet piano to relax at the end of the day, now there is simply no substitute for the Numa. Unless it's the Numa controlling the Dexibell. ;)

Wow...Real-Feel and Sound!!!

By V R. from Presque Isle, ME

I bought this to replace a very old Yamaha CP300 that my church had. The pricetag on the Nords has inflated too much to justify us buying one and so I stumbled across this by luck. I loved everything that I heard on YouTube and so took the chance and found one of these in stock. We just hooked it up for this past weekend and WOW. The sounds and capabilities on this are fantastic. It sounds real and the customizability of everything is excellent. The feel is a whole other praiseworthy thing. The build quality is amazing and the wooden keys are beautiful. There's nothing cheap about this product. The buttons and knobs are solid. Great craftsmanship. The interfacing isn't too complicated either and I found it to be fairly intuitive. I've not set it up for midi yet but I'm excited about that as well.

The feel and responsiveness of the keys is something to write home about too. It's very expressive and responsive. I'd definitely purchase it again if I needed to and would recommend it! Sounds great in a house mix and great online.

So far this keyboard is amazing.

By Chris B. from Saratoga Springs, UT
Music Background: Pianist, Singer and java script guy. Always learning

I received my GT in June of 2022 after pre-ordering in September of 2021. What a wait. And totally worth it. The new Fatar 400W (partial wood) keybed is wonderful. I love the action and weight, and I'm a big fan of piano sounds, and I really love the sounds and the playability of this keyboard. I have a Fantom 8, and a Native Instruments S88Mk2, and this is now my favorite keybed, even over the PHA-50 in the Fantom, which to me says a lot. Studiologic released a new firmware update the day I received my keyboard, which included about 10 new sounds, including a new vintage grand piano that's really fun to play.

I'm usually a PianoTeq guy but wanted something to just sit down and play without having to get a whole set of applications running. I'm really impressed so far. The organs and electric pianos are great, and there are a ton of other instruments that I haven't played around with much yet.

I'm loving all the inputs. I have my Fantom 8 running through the Numa X now, which works great. So I can kind of daisy chain some different instruments together.

Now I have to actually start making some music and stop buying gear...

Gonna keep playing with this and see if it's even necessary to keep the Fantom for my use cases.
