mixed opinions

By gabriel s. from san marcos, TX
Music Background: playing drums ongoing 6 years

it is fun i do like it but i did expect better

-i hate everything about you three days grace

i noticed the kick pad is not very accurate i was hoping it would be more accurate due to the somg being intermediate.

i noticed sometimes with i do a double kick it wont trigger the second beat or kets say i play the same rhythym with both feel but one rhythm in reverse some notes wont be read at all almost as if i did not play them even tho i did.

i believe a better price range for the drumset would be a flat $ because it is a bummer but it is a fun ekit and made my indoor drumming experience better in my apprtment.

still a great kit for practicing the kick pad is still amazing for practicing double bass kick it just wont be 90 percent accurate to the beats but i like the kit overall but i still prefer acoustic drum-sets always.

An All Around Decent Starter Kit

By B J. from Pittsford, NY
Music Background: Bass Player for over 30 years/Hobby Drummer

You get a decent kit for the money. As others have remarked, the quality of the Bluetooth transmission is just okay, as are the programmed drum sounds. There are issues with the kick drum pedal staying together, and I am constantly tightening the lugs on the snare drum. The hi-hat pedal doesn't offer any middle ground either. All that to say, if you are a pro looking for an electronic substitute, I'd keep looking, but if you just like to have fun hitting the cans and maybe doing the occasional recording, you're probably good.

Eases the Pain of not being able to set up the Acoustics

By Matt
Music Background: Filthy Casual

Been playing mostly metal and punk since I joined band in middle school some 2 decades ago. Nothing will ever compare to playing hard on skins, wood and metal. But this comes very very close. The kick tower is very responsive and I have yet to have an unregistered double bass kick, even when I'm giving this thing hell. The snare and kick tower really make this set shine in my opinion. The Tuning lugs on all the pads really give this thing some top tier customization and feel. The cymbals... well they're rubber. The choke is decent. Getting the ride to register a bell hit is a bit of a coin flip unless I am completely missing something (very likely I hope). The module is pretty easy to use once you sit down and spend some time with it, the midi out into reaper is a totally different story. I have yet to get it to register sound in real time. But Records just fine, just can't hear anything. But again, that is totally a end user problem and I'm not knocking off any stars for that reason. I did however take half a star for Purchasing the Nitro Max extension kit (extra Tom and Cymbal), And even after double checking with my Sweetwater rep that they would play together, they unfortunately do not attach to the newer and thicker Pro drum rack (Its ok Charlton I still love you!). Some gaffer tap and customization and they plug and play just fine after that though. Very Happy overall and would recommend this set to beginners and heavy hitters like me.

Not Worth It

By Sweetwater Customer from Riverdale, GA

Bought this for ny adult son, and following is his review:

"Got this as my first drumset and have only had issues. Hihat pedal is basically just an on/off switch with zero modulation and frequently miss inputs at the slightest foot adjustment, Bluetooth audio sounds horrible, often distorting the audio to an unintelligible level (I've tried with multiple earbuds, headphones, and iems to no avail) making watching tutorials or playing along to songs impossible for me. Actual sound of the drums is awful: sounds like GarageBand on my old iPad touch, drum pads are very small (which wouldn't be terrible if it wasn't on top of all the other issues). I really could go on for days.

Really disappointed. If noise isn't much of a concern, I'd just bite the bullet on an acoustic set. A decent set is the same cost as this--not sure what I will do in the meantime."

I really wanted to like this set

By Robert H. from MOUNTAIN HOME, ID

Let me start by saying, as a kit for playing, it sounds great when married up to the Alesis monitor. Flawless. However, I purchased this to use in my home studio, and this is where things take a turn. The drum module is trash for recording MIDI. I have fought the last couple of weeks troubleshooting, purchasing a variety of USB cables, etc., and all I am ever left with is a module that stips sending MIDI data after a minute or two. This has been intermittent and frustrating. I have used my drummers Alesis Command module with this kit flawlessly for send8ng MIDI to my DAW. Alesis sent me a new module that resulted in the same issue. My belief is that this module was engineered poorly, and it shows. Bottom line, if you never want to send MIDI to your computer, this is a great kit for practicing and playing in a band. If you specifically want to send MIDI and record your band, with zero issues? Steering clear.

Alesis Nitro Pro XL Review

By J from Dayton, Ohio

Control module - need a phone to figure, screen is small and not intuitive.

Mesh Pads - feel good but linear compared to acoustic heads
Toms - decent, dynamics need adjustment

Snare - lack of cross-sticking really sucks (setting?)

Cymbals - supposed to choke? (user error?). Ride is not multi-zone? WTF?

Hats - pedal is meh and don't dig the single pad does not move

Assembly - assembled incorrectly at factory, instructions do not detail wiring, or XL connections.

Kick - the pedal does not inspire with stability.

Love it!!

By Sweetwater Customer

I love this set! I got mine a month ago and I went all out and got the extra 8" tom and extra symbol. The drum kit to not disappoint and I'd buy it again! Still digging into everything, but it definitely gets cooler and cooler. They also have expansion packs that can be put into your drum kit!

Great kit for the price!

By Reid D. from Topsham, ME
Music Background: Bedroom musician

Coming to this kit from a more expensive kit that I returned, I'm blown away by the quality to price and performance ratio of this kit. Where the previous kit had triggering issues poor build quality and sporadic triggers along with straight up breaking. This kit was cheaper of much higher build quality and was immediately plug and play. I love the kit and the only downside if I had to pick one is shared with most e-kits, the cymbals are clacky and annoying other than that, I couldn't ask more for what I paid.

FUN KIT

By Sweetwater Customer

I'm not a drummer but I act like one at home . lol

I'm a guitar player but I like having a drum set in the house and enjoy noodling around on one.I had a traditional kit for my son in the basement but he lost interest. It was taking up a lot of space so I sold it and bought one of these. Now my son is playing drums again LOL .

I have nothing to compare it too as I've never owned an e-drum kit before , but the price was right .It looks great, sounds great .

Really enjoying it and happy with my purchase .

Solid Stable edrum Kit — Not Just For Beginners

By Ron from Maryland
Music Background: Drummer off and on for 40 years. Guitar player for 10 years. No gigging, just playing with friends.

Over the last 40 years I have owned 3 acoustic sets and now my 3rd electronic set. Alternating between acoustic and electronic based on housing situation regarding proximity to neighbors and noise levels. I have to say, electronic drums have come a long way since my first set in 1999. The responsiveness of these mesh heads is phenomenal. The cymbals are also excellent, but rubber just doesn't feel like an acoustic cymbal. The build quality of this set is excellent. The metal frame is sturdy and adjustable. I thought I would have a problem with a non traditional high hat, but the pedal is responsive and it only took me about 5 minutes to get comfortable using it. As for sounds out of this kit, some reviews say they are terrible. Maybe my hearing is shot, but they sound fine to me. I took one of the stock kits, made a few in module modifications and saved it as a user kit and it sounds fine to me. I was in the fence between this kit and a Roland TD-17 KVX2. Read and watched a lot of reviews and decided for playing in my basement alone or with friends, I could save more than 1k and go with this kit. Overall a good decision and I am happy with it. Is it a pro level kit? YMMV.

So much fun

By Mathew A. from Camas Valley, OR

We got this for family for Christmas. Easy to assemble. Sturdy and sounds great. A lot of family, highly recommended.

The only thing is the bluetooth feature seems to want you to be able to select the drums from the bluetooth speaker. Ours bluetooth speaker has to be selected by the other device. So it doesn't work.

Awesome kit, great upgrade!

By Morgan B. from Murray, KY
Music Background: Classical piano, rock drums, guitar, played my whole life haha

Upgraded from a nitro mesh, and it's an amazing upgrade. The sounds are very impressive and the module is user friendly. The Bluetooth option on the module is great! The rack is quite an improvement for sure! A lot more sturdy and larger in size so that's good. Go and download the full user manual from the website and see the actual sound models that are used. Every rim is programmable as well. I have programmed a double bass kit (using the hi hat pedal as a double) with 6 cymbals (using the rims as cymbals lol) down to a nice jazzy sounding kit. It's super fun! Can get lost for hours just creating kits and they give enough user kit slots to get creative! Good for beginners and pros alike! Awesome kit! Worth it for sure!!! You will be happy and Sweetwater makes it an awesome purchase experience and you get candy?!?!? Sweet

Good for the money

By Scott C. from Brookston, IN

I upgraded from a rubber drum set. The mesh is a great change. This set was easy to set up. You do have to crank pretty hard on the thumb screws to get everything tight but you can get it tight. Pretty sturdy. Drum sounds aren't amazing but I was able to make a custom set I'm fairly happy with. The downloaded user guide patch list does not mach the controller. I contacted support and they said they are going to address it. The high hat is the worst part of the set. Splashing with the foot pedal is near impossible. But otherwise it is ok. I ebayed another crash to add to it. It is interesting that if I put the same patch voice on both crashes they have different tones. It's actually fine and I consider that a good thing, just odd if it's purposeful and not documented. All in all, for the price, I'm super happy with this set.

Almost perfect

By Jackson B. from Gainesville, TX
Music Background: Drummer boy

Let me start off with the good.
1. You're getting way more bang for your buck than you would with a Roland or Yamaha kit at this price; the "tuneable" large mesh-head bass drum pad, the very sturdy/heavy-duty reinforced drum rack, the 10-inch, deep snare, every tom has a head and rim zone, and a chokeable crash and ride.
2. Quality mesh heads (probably a thicker ply than the nitro max; seem to be closer to that of the strata prime/core) are incredibly accurate at even making a difference in feel with the slightest half-turns of the drum key, adding to the overall feeling of "realism" with this kit.
3. Included features. I didn't ever use the pedal that came with this particular kit (opted for a Gibraltar instead, which I can't recommend enough) but I have used what I am pretty sure is the exact same pedal that came with my nitro mesh from about 5 years ago, and I remember that thing being a piece of junk. But hey, Roland doesn't offer any kind of included pedal at this price point. And while I prefer a hickory stick like Vater 5Bs, the lighter, (I assume) maple no-name sticks that come with the kit will probably be able to hold up at least for a little while until a beginner player may want to try a name brand. And last but not least, the free Melodics and Drumeo subscriptions, and the free dark birch expansion pack for BFD Player. I mean I don't think Melodics was necessary when 90 days of Drumeo is included for no cost, but you won't hear me complaining about more free features any time soon.
4. This goes without saying, but Sweetwater is the best. After spending even five minutes on the site, I feel like I can geek out about all the gear, and after having my sales engineer Nick be patient with me as I tried to get my bank to let me buy this kit, I honestly don't know why I bother ever going into guitar center, even to buy a quick pair of sticks or moon gel for my acoustic drums. I'd rather just wait for those to ship to me (with the free candy) than drive 35 minutes just for a guitarist to tell me that I should buy a Roland if I'm "really serious about the drums." Sweetwater is second to none. I will be visiting Fort Wayne one of these days, I know it. Much love to y'all.

Things that would've been nice, but definitely aren't necessary.
1. A bass drum patch. I know this is still a very new thing for e-drums (I've only seen it on the Simmons Titan line and the brand new Roland quiet pads) but I still think a specific one for mesh heads being included in the box is an essential. Especially for drummers who prefer the quieter sound and quicker response from felt over plastic beaters, such as myself. I know it's a stretch, and I didn't half a star off for this.
2. Different hi-hat pedal and cymbals. I'm not asking for the 360 arc cymbals from the strata kits, nor do I expect it, but at least a bigger ride, (if not a bigger ride and crash), feels like it would be appropriate for the "pro" name of this kit. Or even just a second crash, no different from the other crash and ride that come in the box. Same goes for the hi-hat pedal. Though I am able to see that this is an upgrade over what originally came with the Nitro Mesh, I still think a pedal closer related to Roland or Yamaha's cheaper options would've been preferable. Just a little too bouncy for my taste.
3. More drum editing options. I'm not crazy about all the mic placements and room types, and I don't need every single drum or cymbal to be an actual recorded Meinl Byzance or DW Collector's, but things like muffling and head type, as well as layering and compression would've been cool to see.

Things I think needed to be included/different at this price
1. A mobile app. Yamaha was the first to actually create an app that allows the user to check which drum kit they want, and even edit the sounds of each kit, all within the app. Roland and Simmons have both followed suit since then, but Alesis still has some catching up to do.
2. Downloadable module presets. I had a Simmons Titan 50 before buying this kit (because I wanted something of higher, heavier duty quality) and one of the features I felt like it did better than Alesis and Roland (since you have to pay to get different Roland sound packs) is the fact that it came with the option to download 100% free drum module presets, basically giving you multiple modules in one. Yes, I know this kit comes with the free BFD player expansion pack, but I still think Alesis could've at least done something where you could download sounds from the strata or even strike for free. Missed opportunity for sure.
3. A brand new drum module. Like I said before, I don't think there needs to be any specific recorded acoustic drums and cymbals, but with the Simmons Titan 50 I used to have, the sounds, options for compression, and cymbals having a much longer, natural decay all make this module look a generation or two older than it is.

My final verdict is, despite the things I would change/don't like, this purchase, to me, was worth it. I would've preferred to pay something closer to the price of the nitro max, ofc, but this is definitely a major upgrade over the max, even if it's just for the rack and pads. The module needs some work. Simmons can teach Alesis a few things. But all in all, I'd pick this over a TD-07 any day of the week.

Great kit

By Michael M. from Phillipsburg, NJ
Music Background: I've dabbled in music for about 25 years. I never got too serious though. I've gone through probably a dozen guitars, a bass, various amps and pedals. None of it ever stuck. I did vocals for a few bands with my brother and an already established punk band

I got this as an upgrade from the Alesis Nitro Mesh kit. Lower profile rims, larger snare, and Bluetooth are my favorite features. The mesh kick tower is also a big benefit for me as I use this kit in my apartment, so it's quieter.
