What a fantastic little instrument, Epiphone really outdid themselves this time! The position of the pickups, the layout of the electronics, the feel and sound...winner, winner, winner! I own a Gibson SG bass as well and this bass certainly keeps up and is no slouch. If this bass cost twice as much, it'd be a deal...at this price, it's a MUST have~
A lot of bass for the money
I have had this bass for a few months now. Build quality is decent. I had a problem with the bridge pick-up having dislodged from the pick-up cavity. Basically, the brass anchor for the height adjustment screw on the treble side popped out of the body. From what I can see, the anchor is too close to the hole where the wiring goes through. So, as a result, not enough surrounding wood to support the anchor. Simple enough fix. Just had to take out the pick-up, put in some wood shavings with a mixture of carpenters glue and pop the anchor back in place. No problems since. This seems to have been a fairly common problem on the early run Newports. I had bought five of these guys and four of them had this same issue. My opinion, not worth sending back. That aside, the Newport has a great feeling neck. A bit flatter and wider feeling than the Viola, Rumblekat, or EB-0 basses that Epiphone offers in short scale format. As mentioned in other reviews, the mudbucker seems to be tuned a bit different in these, giving it it's own unique tone. It's a very fun bass to play and I find it hard to put down. I have used it in many recording situations and haven't had any issues... Scratchy pots, string buzz etc.... I think my other bass guitars may be getting jealous!
