Electro-Harmonix Nano Battalion Bass Preamp & Overdrive Reviews

Preamp, Overdrive, and DI Pedal for Bass Guitar with 3-band EQ and MOSFET Distortion Circuit

The Electro-Harmonix Nano Battalion is a bass preamp and overdrive pedal with all-analog circuitry that delivers a formidable arsenal of bass tones in a compact, tour-tough chassis. The Nano Battalion's big sibling is very popular at Sweetwater; and by popular demand, Electro-Harmonix is now offering the Battalion's tonal onslaught in a pedalboard-friendly, single-wide stompbox form factor. The Nano Battalion's versatile MOSFET drive circuit serves up everything from subtle overdrive to heavy, saturated distortion, while its 3-band EQ (with three EQ position modes) gives you maximum sound-shaping control and flexibility. The Nano also offers three signal flow modes that yield unique tonal variations.

Great Pedal

By Chris Borchers from Seguin, TX on April 2, 2023

This pedal deserves more love. Clean/Fuzz blend, does what it is supposed to do, great for getting a slightly distorted bass tone without losing cleans and without needing 2 amps. Very simple really. Vol and Blend control overall volume and mix of signals. Drive and Tone are the distortion pedal controls. Treble, Bass and the Mid switch are the EQ. It's a little confusing because the mids are controlled with a switch while highs and lows have knobs, but it's just high/mid/low eq. The real versatility comes from the dist/input/dry switch. Place the eq after the distortion and the clean signal is unaffected while the distortion has the tone knob and the eq. Put the eq after the input and both paths are affected by the eq, while the distortion still has the tone control. EQ the dry signal and you can have separate eq for both since the distortion still has the tone control. Great pedal!

Don't be fooled by it's size...

Preamp? Might be... But it's essentially an overdrive. And a heck of a good one!

It's hard to consider it as a preamp because you can't get the EQ always on, because it has only one footswitch. But if you seek DRIVE, you got it!

But first, the EQ capabilities for a clean signal. It sounds KILLER even with two knobs and a mid switch. The sound coming out of it is amazing and makes the money worth by itself.

But when you dial in some drive and blend it with the clean signal, then it comes alive!

Being able to position the EQ section (black knobs and upper right switch) before the OD only, the clean only or before both is a great idea and makes the pedal very versatile! You can dial in any sort of distorion, from vintage tube like to metallic contemporary sounds.

Perfection would come with a second footswitch, but the regular version of the pedal offers it for U$30 more.

Although it seems to me that the OD is sounds WAY BETTER in this NANO version.

If you want a decent usable OD that is really musical, go get it. The tone versatility of the OD can only be matched by more expensive pedals, like the Aftershock or the DarkGlass ones.
