Yamaha NTX1 Nylon String Acoustic-Electric Guitar - Natural Reviews

Nylon-string Acoustic-electric Guitar with Spruce Top, Nato Back and Sides, Nato Neck, and Walnut Fingerboard - Natural

Electric and thinline players can have trouble adapting to the necks, nuts, and bodies, and actions of traditional nylon-string guitars. But the Yamaha NTX1 lineup seeks to rectify this awkward transition by blending mature plugged-in classical tones with precision comfort and playability for the stage. The NTX1’s slim nato wood body features a solid Sitka spruce top with an advanced undersaddle pickup system to supply satisfying plugged-in tone anywhere you play out — from the coffee shop to the club. The modern neck profile puts plenty of space between your palm and fingers to facilitate lead and chord work without cramping. You also get a slimmed-down 1-7/8" nut spacing for an easier transition between axes, along with a genuine walnut fingerboard with ultra-flat 23-5/8" radiusing to supply classic nylon-string phrasing and momentum.

Yamaha A Winner

By Randall Nelson from Fuquay Varina, NC on February 5, 2024 Music Background: Guitar playing 40 yrs plus

This is my favorite go to for setting around and playing. I have a Gibson J-45 and three other nice acoustic. I find myself play a lot of the time on this when learning or just noodling around. Great for soft times. Stays in tune and when you need it it has the built in tuner. Electronics OK. Very satisfied. 40 yrs of picking and still find this just a little slice of heaven.

The guitar of a troubadour

By Sweetwater Customer on January 6, 2023

This is the perfect guitar for the traveling singer and songwriter. Sturdly built and great sounding, it packs a punch. The oval action hole sounds great when the nylon strings are played with a pick like Willie Nelson. The onboard tuner is more accurate than the average Snark and it's brightness meter is just as navigable as the Snark's conventional gauge meter. The guitar itself is beautiful, with intricate tuning pegs and accompanying metal work, the black pegs give it a Regal look. The choice of wood on the fretboard and saddle is exquisite. Truly a guitar for Buster Scruggs or anyone wishing to best him.

Great!

The build quality is great! Stays in tune and the electronics are awesome! I'm impressed!

setup sucks

By jman on June 26, 2021

I like this guitar, but out of the box i should have sent it back. The action was 1/4 of an inch at the 12th fret to high for a classic player. the action at the nut was the same. very poor. after getting the playability were i wanted it, it now play s well, the tone is very good electric or acoustic, very good tuners nice neck, the pre amp is also very good. i have light gauge daddario classic strings and they feel good and sound better than the mediums that came with it. These companies need to do a better job on the setups, not everyone is a guitar tech like myself. when i spend this amount of money it should play.if this guitar went though sweetwaters hands shame on them for shipping me a second rate instrument.

Very impressed

By Osvaldo Rodriguez from NY on March 22, 2021

First time ordering a guitar online so I was a little sceptical. To my surprise it was better than I expected.
I tried several guitars on different stores before ordering this one to be sure that I was getting what I was looking for. I own a classic acoustic guitar and an acoustic-electric and was looking for a hybrid type so I could have the possibilities of mixing these 2 sounds and feels. This is it!
The advantage of having the sound and feel of the classical nylon guitar for finger picking songs with the warmth typical of the nylon strings and the ability of a bright strumming were you can EQ it right there on the fly from one song to the next, in advantageously incredible. The neck profile is perfect for someone like me who played on a classical (2") for many yrs and always felt the acoustic-electric neck too small. This one is about 1 7/8" so very comfortable for nylon strings still.
I am extremely satisfied and impressed with the looks, the quality and the sound of this guitar. On top of this, the constant support you get from Sweetwater is unbelievable. Highly recommend it to anyone thinking about buying or even searching for an instrument.

Yamaha NTX-1

By Sweetwater Customer on March 15, 2021

The first purchase of a guitar online for me- everything went well. Instrument was very well packed, and arrived quickly. Workmanship and finish on the guitar are exceptional, especially considering that this is priced in the lower end of the model line. Purchased for recording direct to DAW, sounds good with onboard pickup, and the built-in tuner is a usable feature. I don't use the on-board EQ for recording, but a nice feature if you play live. Very pleased with the quality and sound, and would recommend to anyone wanting a quality nylon acoustic instrument that can compete with models that cost substantially more.

Great Nylon string guitar

By Randy on March 12, 2021 Music Background: Rock, blues and country

This guitar is just an incredible instrument for the price. I've been looking for a nylon guitar complement my other guitars. Playing for over 50 years, I just wanted nylon sound for a little change and my on person time. The NTX1 has a great sound, fit and finish. I found the end of frets just a little sharp which was easily corrected with a little redressing. If your looking for a fun venture into nylon string without big cost this little beauty is it. As always the folks at Sweetwater are the best and the candy is just a nice bonus touch.
Highly recommended for the fun alone, it smile very time I pick up.

Yamaha NTX1

By John from Virginia on December 16, 2020

I started playing again after a long layoff. My son (25) wanted to learn guitar and that pushed me to start playing again. It came back pretty fast, but my older hands (67yo)don't work like they once did. I wanted a nylon string guitar and after some research decided on the Yamaha. It arrived about 2 weeks ago in perfect condition. I love the instrument! It is easy to play and the strings are easier to fret than my steel string Ovation. I'll still play the steel sting guitar some, but not as much as this new Yamaha. The electronics are great and it sounds very good through my 1960s VOX amp. Without the amp the instrument is not loud, but I don't really need loud anymore. A great purchase and great help from the Sweetwater staff. The case fits like a glove. I'm very happy.

Fantastic... minus the bridge

By Isaac McCormick from Lynnwood, WA on February 9, 2024 Music Background: Lifelong player, Collegiate Musician

I love this guitar. Right out of the box it sounded amazing, gave both my roommate and I chills with the first string plucks. Only problem is that I received it from the manufacturer with excessive bridge height that needed to be addressed by a professional luthier (shout out to Mike Lull Customs in Bellevue WA) to the tune of about $. Not a matter of adjusting the truss, actual physical reduction of the bridge component. They actually described it as "XXL string height" whereas I requested medium low. The difference was enormous, I'm amazed at how limiting this single defect was. I've included a before and after photo for reference, all my friends I've shown have all been in disbelief.

I imagine (hope) this isn't standard for the model so much as varrys from product to product, but regardless I spent 3 years being held back by this. I would encourage anyone thinking about purchasing to reach out to your local *TRUSTED* luthier (sorry not sorry guitar center) to ask what the cost of a bridge correction like mine would cost, and budget accordingly.

Love this guitar, but damnit I shouldn't have to drop funds just to make it playable above the 5th position

Good value

By Brian Leahy on November 22, 2022 Music Background: Beginner

As a new beginner I have been in search of the perfect guitar to learn on. As a retired farmer I have large, arthritic hands and I like the nut width on this guitar. Some notes sound very nice and so are so-so but this a solid value guitar. The electronics are easy to learn and add a new stage in my learning process. I have decided to learn on a steal string guitar but will be keeping this guitar. I want to thank Marshall Parks for walking me through the buying process and for his follow-up call.

Update!

By MJS on November 25, 2022

This is an update to my previous 3 star rating. Now that I've had this for sometime, I will confess that I think it deserves another star. The tone has markedly improved across all the strings especially if I don't try to overpower it. I mainly finger pick it but found that it sounds good flat picked too. Strumming it sounds just OK. I have also gotten used to the neck so I would say that playability is acceptable although with my smallish hands I do have the occasional miscue on fretting-especially when playing chords. I have a mix of bass and triple strings (Augustine bass and Savarez florocarbon trebles). Nice and light and comfortable body size for couch playing. So, better than "Just OK". A good intro into nylon.....

Plays smooth

By Ian Warner from Colorado on March 12, 2021

Came set up right out the box, feels solid and looks great.Smooth for single note lines but some chords are tougher due to the small string spacing mixed with the play that nylon strings have.
This however does help with improving left hand positioning to be more precise in order to get a clean sound, so could be a con that leads to a pro.
Plugged in is amazing due to virtually no feed back and the eq options. I'd say my favorite part of this guitar is the built in tuner, it was spot on with my others. Now for the cons
This may be nitpicking but it takes AA batteries not a 9v
Doesn't sound nearly as warm or resonant compared to a standard classical guitar
String spacing is a little too tight for some fingerstyle pieces I could easily play on my acoustic or my lucero classical guitar. Honestly feels like an electric with nylon strings. That being said it is "hybrid/transition guitar" so this is understandable. I would recommend this guitar if you play many styles but if you are mostly fingerstyle I'd stay away.

Just OK

By MJS on June 14, 2022

I've owned a multitude of nylon string guitars. I've always had a problem with neck width and shape. I was hoping this one would be the answer, and based upon extensive emails with my sales engineer bought one. Playability was so/so. Maybe slightly better than others for my hand limitations. Tone wise unless one is very light on the touch acoustically you get a very "metallic" sound. I will admit to being a bit heavy handed as a finger picker which isn't an issue on steel string guitars. So I would rate it as OK for what it is, but certainly not stellar. I will add that I paid Sweetwater for a set up-so that's not the issue.

Also shipped to me was a D'addaria humidipak package that I didn't order, but was charged for (???). At this point, I'm not real pleased with the buying process. I planned to return this guitar after having it about 5 days or so. Unfortunately, I would need to pay shipping costs both ways. I assume I would also eat the set up cost and the cost of the strings they added as well. Not sure about that as my sales engineer has gone silent on me as of now. With whatever refund I would receive I may as well just keep it. I have to say I'm not a fan of either the guitar or the process.
