Wampler Moxie Overdrive Pedal Reviews

Overdrive Pedal with Voice Switch and Fat Switch

From boutique builders to mass-produced manufacturers, every pedal maker out there has their own version of the classic green 3-knob dirtbox. The Moxie is Brian Wampler’s homage to that iconic pedal, but elevated with some serious tonal versatility! This overdrive pedal starts out with an authentic 4558 chip and top-tier components to deliver everything from a slight boost to roaring heavy overdrive tones — in short, it’s everything a great screamer-style pedal should be. However, that’s only the beginning: the Moxie has been upgraded with a Voice switch and a Fat switch to throw a wrench into the standard green OD design, providing you with both increased gain and enhanced clarity. Did we mention that it does all of this in a tiny mini-sized form factor? The Moxie overdrive may be steeped in tradition, but it's no clone: it offers a bold new take on the screamer-style formula.

Sweet pedal

By Sweetwater Customer on October 25, 2023

Absolutely amazing overdrive pedal!!!

Most excellent!

By John from Austin, TX on October 17, 2023 Music Background: 45 years jazz and contemporary Christian

The voice and fat switches give it more tonal options than the old standby TS. I like it stacked with the Tumnus after it.

Wampler does it again

By Andy Collins from Honokaʻa, HI on June 5, 2023 Music Background: Intermediate hobby player

Full disclosure - Iʻve never met a Wampler dirt pedal I didnʻt like - but this little green beast is a pleasure palace of screamer based tones. Itʻs got it all, and if 80ʻs hard rock and even metal is your thing you will find so many tones to satisfy the urge in this tiny green package. The tone is full and rich, and sounds just fantastic with my Yamaha P-90 Revstar. It does not sound hollow or tinny, like many screamer pedals can. The Fat switch really thickens the sound even more, and pinch harmonics have a beautiful character. You will not be disappointed.

It screams!

By Kevin from Massachusetts on April 17, 2023

I used to own two TS9s, and I'll never know why I sold them both. It was always a reliable part of my rig that fit every situation. So I decided years later to revisit the screamer OD category, and the Wampler Moxie immediately captured my interest. The name "Moxie" is known to New Englanders (especially Mainers) as a polarizing soft drink: people seem to either love it or hate it. I think that's also true with screamer-type pedals, because some really like the midrange hump, while others can't stand it. Well, Brian Wampler, genius that he is, came up with a twist on the TS circuit that may please both camps. With the Voice switch in the left position, you have your classic TS mid spike that's great for leads. Switch it to the right, and the EQ not only flattens out, but is pushed up such that it yields a convincing kloney tone. Then there's the Fat switch: left is stock, while right adds a MOSFET gain stage that, I must say, makes my Fender sound like a Marshall. FYI, I demoed this with an Epiphone Les Paul Special with P90s and a Fender Blues Junior IV FSR (the one with the Cannabis Rex speaker). All in all, I'm very pleased with this overdrive, and I'm looking forward to further experimentation with other guitars and stacking it with my Red Llama clone!

A TS pedal I actually LOVE.

By BWall from Nashville, Tennessee on April 9, 2023 Music Background: Spent years touring. Now, I only do recording work.

Over the past 30 years I have owned and got rid of every screamer pedal made. Hated all of them. I do actually still own on TS. But, I saw this come out and for a while ignored it. Started seeing reviews and realized that while it's a "green" pedal, it was something different. So, I called my Sales Engineer and ordered it. I can't believe how much I actually enjoy this pedal. I use it in the "Zen" like settings mostly. But both modes are equally great. I finally can say I have a TS that I love.

Mean, Green, and ready to Scream

By Mitch from Michigan on February 15, 2023 Music Background: Intermediate, Hobbyist, recording musician

I've had multiple Tube Screamers and TS style pedals over the last 18 years and I understood why so many people liked them but I could never get them to sound good with my rig and playing style. That all changed with the Moxie. It's so tweak-able that you go from SRV style blues to stacking it with another OD and flip the fat switch and now you have hard rock/heavy metal territory. I am currently using a LP and I'm stacking a Duke of Tone, a SD1 and the Moxie into a Blues Jr and I can get almost any tone I want. Shoutout to Stuart Niven for getting me this little guy.

Get this instead of a TS Mini and run it at 18v

By Sweetwater Customer on November 30, 2022

I was in a store demoing this as well as a TS mini and was already leaning towards the TS mini because of the price point and I was happy with the TS mini sounds. Plugged in and played and still happy but then I switched to the Moxie. I was simply blown away. The range on all 3 standard knobs was much greater and this mattered a lot with the tone knob. To me it felt more forgiving with the tone knob on the Moxie and while I could get a very bad muffled sound, it felt like there was still a bit more clarity and thus harder to get a "bad" sound. Not sure if this the TS10 circuit vs standard TS9/808 but it was noticeable. The Moxie also felt like it had more articulation across the board with the gain knob.

All of this was at stock settings. Once I flipped both switches it was awesome. The Fat switch in particular really just gave me more. The voice switch def balanced out the hump on the mid range but really not the reason I'm buying a Screamer style anyways so it's more of a nice to have.

Once I got it home, I tested it with the 9v in my rig and then hooked it up to 18v. The feeling of articulation from before seemed to have been heightened with 18v without changing any settings and the Fat switch sounded a bit better. For now I'm gonna keep running at 18v and depending on my needs the Fat switch may be engaged. I like to run the pedal as a lead boost with the level at 1, gain at 10, tone at 12 after my Tumnus mini or MXR Timmy going into a Simplifier on the Fender amp setting.

Hands down a great choice for a TS style pedal with a lot of great flexibility.

Ts-10 and then some

By Sean from Knoxville, TN on November 22, 2022

Love the Moxie! It not only gives you that ts-10 sound, but the added switches turn it into a different monster with a tone more options. I run it as a classic screamer in my setup, but it's definitely not a 1 trick pony! Love Wampler! Thanks to my sales guy Anthony Longano for always taking care of me. Sweetwater sales team is the best.

my perfect TS

By Zachary on October 21, 2022

This tiny pedal has basically everything I need in an OD right here. You can get the Texas Blues SRV or Mayer-esque tones for sure - it sounds exactly like a tube screamer is supposed to. The voice switch transforms the pedal into a great, open-sounding drive that can probably fill the box that a timmy or a klon might - transparent, lowish gain bluesy stuff. The fat switch in TS mode gives you a distinct, punchy lead tone that sounds KILLER with single coils. With the voice switch engaged, you're getting a beefy near-distortion that stands next to any amp overdrive tone. I can't recommend this pedal enough.

WOW!!!!

By Javy Bojorquez from Ohio. on September 23, 2022 Music Background: Music producer, Arranger, Composer, MD, professional touring/session guitarist.

I watch as many videos as you can imagine about this pedal, they all looked and sounded good, still I was a little skeptical deep down. I put a little pedalboard together for some light, practical gigs like church, small gigs and little stuff. I even put this on my B pedalboard since the A one is being tweaked at the moment so I had a church gig to play at and I had to put some very last minute. With the TILT by REVV as a foundation for my tone I went ahead and took the little project pedalboard, and oh my!!!! the tone of this thing is insane!! really amazing, It sounds like a boutique, sophisticated and simply ridiculous TS, I powered it 18v and it's so open, seriously love it. I think I'm going to get a couple more. Superbly amazing tones..

Just another Screamer pedal? Hardly!

By Mike Pillittere from Austin TX on September 15, 2022 Music Background: Singer/Songwriter

Wampler has taken the classic Screamer circuit and really improved on it. The Voice switch allows you to either have the regular Screamer tone or a more balanced sound without the usual mid-range hump of the original. The Fat switch adds some additional "umph" to the gain stage for a more "meaty" sound. The pedal can take 9V-18V, so you can get the added headroom that the extra voltage offers. It stacks very well with other distortion/overdrive pedals, too. As usual, the build quality is superb, which is what you expect from a Wampler product. If I could say one thing "bad" about it, I wish it had a blue LED like all of my other Wampler pedals in my fly board instead of a green one (I get it, it's a green Screamer pedal), but that's just being nit-picky. A great addition to anyone's pedal collection!

Excellent Tubescreamer

By Don from Pennsylvania on September 15, 2022 Music Background: Advanced Intermediate

This is my first time trying a TS10 style pedal! I've owned TS808'S and TS9's over the years. I must say, though I'm very impressed with Brian Wamplers take on the TS10. I like all the different settings and options it has. So my advise is to buy it and find your favorite setting.

The Moxie has “moxie”

By Bert Lindsey from FOLSOM, LA on September 14, 2022 Music Background: Praise & Worship - Lead Guitar

I have never owned anything that would qualify as a "screamer", nor have I owned any of Brian Wamplers pedals either.

After watching his own video on it's tweaked circuitry, I pre-ordered it immediately. A legit tube screamer and the ability to reduce the mid scoops made it a no brainer.

I placed it first in the dirt chain, an [almost] always on lightly gained boost feeding into either Morning Glory > Modded Bd2 or Zendrive. Those pedals were always lacking something that I couldn't figure out, but this Wampler pedal was the solution.

As an aside, I cut the TempleBoard Diem from 34" to 27" just to curb pedal purchases… but if there were enough small profile options like The Moxie out there I could really maximize that real estate.

Awesome Pedal

By Stephane Touya from PATCHOGUE, NY on September 14, 2022

The youtube videos don't do it justice. Once you have the gain dialed in for your amp, the tone is beautiful.

Great TS10 Plus!

By RLT on September 14, 2022 Music Background: Gigging guitarist

Always regretted selling my original TS10, but not now! This sounds just like the one I previously owned to my ears. The addition of the voice switch fixes what the original needed. The fat switch is very good also! It's like 3 pedals in one. Also stacks well with my Wampler Belle. Really happy with this purchase!

Fantastic Pedal

By Donald M Whitesel from Lancaster, PA on September 13, 2022

This is the first TS10 type of OD pedal I've owned and played! I'm definitely glad I bought it too because I pretty much love it. If I want to hear a traditional tube screamer, then it's easy to get or with a flick of a switch it changes. Oh, it's still a Tube Screamer but a lot smoother sounding for lack of better words. I think this pedal will complement the Wampler Tumnis and make for a couple great OD's! Really worth a try.

The Moxie!

By Harry O from Houston, TX on September 13, 2022 Music Background: Over fifty years of touring, recording, performing, and teaching.

Whenever Wampler comes out with a new pedal, I'm interested. Brian and company absolutely hit it out of the park with this one! I've owned and played through TS style pedals forever, and they always had shortcomings (not enough gain and output, etc.) With just a couple of tweaks and mini switches, problem solved. I recently took it to a recording session, and the engineer was raving about the tone for days (Les Paul-Moxie-Fender "Rivera" Concert 1X12)! Works great in both live and studio settings. If you like/love TS style pedals, this is a must have! And the Sweetwater folks were prompt and polite as always!

Great pedal

By Jacob Blair from JEFFERSONVILLE, OH on September 9, 2022 Music Background: Rock blues

A very nice mini tube screamer. I love the tones I can get and Also stacks well with my distortion. Has earned a permanent spot on my board. The knobs and switches are high quality which make dialing in this pedal much easier.

A TS10 on steroids

By Daniel Llerena from Miami, FL on September 8, 2022 Music Background: Hobbyist

Are there a million tube screamers on the market? Yes. What makes this different you might ask? For starters, this is based on the "infamous" TS10 while most screamer clones are based on the TS808 and TS9 respectively. The MOSFET clipping mode(aka the fat switch) turns this pedal into a fire-breathing amp-like distortion. Even in the standard mode, it remains articulate and tight. It's one of the few tube screamer-style pedals out there that sound great straight into a clean channel.

Love it!!!!

By Sweetwater Customer on September 1, 2022 Music Background: Guitarist

I'm working my way through every type of tube screamer that's not the original but a take on them. Brian really did a great job with this mini pedal. It just does everything I like. I like gain it does that. If you want less gain it does that. He thought of everything and it does it beautifully. And it's mini. It's definitely a keeper.

One of the best drive pedals I’ve owned

By Keith on September 9, 2022 Music Background: Guitarist vocalist

No doubt that the engine room is designed after the tubescreamer concept. The lean toward the TS10 version is obvious, and whatever it is inside that generates tone is a solid basis, but it's the high quality of the controls that win this one 5 stars. The sweep of the knobs and position of either switch take you anywhere you want to go.
Sweet sweet tone no matter which direction you take it in. Sweet clear clean boost, to TS, to ZenD, to a full on distortion pedal, this is an instant classic, and it's going to be hard for other pedal makers to top it.
Without meaning to, I've wound up with 3 Wampler minis on my board, the Tumnus, the Moxie, and the Plexi-drive mini. Clean boost to edge of breakup to chicken pickin to crunch to singing sustain, I'm 100% powered by Wampler at this point.

Disappointed

This sounds to thin for my taste, it sound to glassie, not what I expected.
