Brilliant product
I have been a MOTU user since the mid 80's, starting with Performer and expanded over the years with various MOTU interfaces. This one of those products which can easily be overlooked. However, don't get fooled by the name "Monitor". Monitor 8 has 8 balanced audio inputs, yes no mic pre's, but is actually cool as you use your preferred mic pres or whole outboard signal chain for the mic inputs you need and DIs for the rest. You have the top-notch ESS converters providing superb audio quality.
You can use this as your only audio interface. Of course, where this really shines is the 8 stereo channels of outputs, so you can hook up multiple monitor pairs and/or independent headphone mixes, which musicians can control remotely via smartphones/tablet.
This is also a perfect interface for a podcasting studio, again you will need mic pres or another audio interface like the MOTU 828es or 8pre-es or of course an inexpensive preamp like the Behringer ADA8200 - not that it will do the MOTU justice, but it will work.
Another use for this because of the extensive output routing possibilities is patching in outboard gear during in-the-box mixing.
Often overlooked when making a purchase decision is the cost of ownership. Owning interfaces from various vendors MOTU offers the best cost of ownership and the least amount of issues due to amazingly stable drivers.
An amazing device, but no TB mic
As odd as it seems I have always despised the lack of rear headphone outputs on audio interfaces. Creates chaos in my opinion.

Issue solved.
I use outboard pres so the fact that there are no one board preamps didn't matter for me. May for others.
Great converters, previous unit was NI kontrol 2. Def an improvement in conversion, much louder headphone amps with more clarity.
Routing did take some time to learn. But it was fun.
This digital mixer under the hood ain't bad... that surprised me. A small learning curve, but nothing that should deter you.
Love all the monitoring options and routing that can be done.
My only gripe and yes I have to include this is there is no talkback mic like there is on say the 8-pre es (more than likely my next purchase). Another motu product. That forces me to use a channel for a dedicated TB mic. Reducing the inputs available from 7 to 8. Not a major issue at the moment.
Although I use the Monitor 8 as my main interface I'm pretty sure its even more amazing paired with another Motu unit.
I would say anyone with a decent preamp(s),and needs an amazing way to get each band member a Custom Cue mix that they could even them selves control, I can't think of a better solution. Great product!
