Warm sound

By Ekon K. from Mesa, AZ
Music Background: Producer, singer, songwriter

I have been using this mixer/usb interface/recorder for about 6 months and have nothing but positive things to say about
It. Well, I do hear clicks and pops when trying to solo tracks during mixdowns, but I suspect that's a "me" issue somehow. It looks great, sounds good, works awesome for mics and inserts. I can send tracks to individual channels from my MPC via usb no problem. Recording a song, vocals and all, is a bit of a struggle compared to DAW workflows, but that's ok.

Awesome piece of equipment. Perfect for small home studios!

By Alan M. from Yatesville, GA

I've got my drum mics connected to this thing and it makes my kit sound like it was professionally recorded. I've had this a little over a year and I absolutely LOVE it!

I’ve used mine for

By Johnny R. from Utah
Music Background: Professional

I've used mine for 4 years. It's quiet, works well with external hardware, and works well as an interface. It even records onto an SD card for live recordings. It's a nice solution for a home studio. I recommend.

great machine!

By Tim from Chicago, IL
Music Background: professional musician

This is pretty much all you need to do good multi-track recordings and mixdowns without having to use a computer.
I've been using it for close to a year with no problems. It fits nicely on a Rockville mixer stand. I've modified my Rockville mixer stand by putting casters on it so I can wheel the board around with little effort.
If you've come up on TEAC reel to reel recorders, this unit will make perfect sense early on. The board is very easy to understand.
There are also many fabulous features that you'll learn about as you go. TASCAM has put up a bunch of very good videos on Youtube to guide you.

A beautiful mix of analog and digital

By Jay from PA

True faders that you don't have to wake up and all Chanel's go into my Mac for recording.

The book is written for the technicians.

For it to record to your computer download the driver.
For playback use the Bluetooth connection.
Or give up the use of track one or two and you have to switch the track selector from line to mix.
Which is really dumb because that selector is on every track.

And the other thing is phantom power is for all tracks be careful not to burn up your ribbon microphones if you have em.

Other than that I love it.

Not a serious recording solution

By Bill A. from Kalamazoo, MI
Music Background: Gigging musician for 25 years.

I was excited for this when it came out. I received 3 faulty units before getting one that works. It's pretty screwed up that all of the replacements were refurbished with signs of being previously opened and light cosmetic damage most likely from prior use. I've lost a lot of faith in Tascam!

This works well for quick sketching of ideas/recording practices etc. Sounds decent as a mixer. Probably not durable enough for live use. Even if left stationary, live mixing boards tend to take a lot of abuse.

The preamps sound pretty basic, but I'm using external mic pres and compressors so not really an issue for me. The built-in compressors are utter garbage, but at least they can be turned down/off. The mixer sounds pretty good. it's not an issue for me that the EQ and effects aren't sent to the DAW. If mixing in a DAW, You'd most likely want to start from scratch anyway. I haven't realy used it as an interface so i can't comment on that aspect.

Here's what it would need to be an essential piece of gear for me.

1. Inserts on the 1st 16 channels.
2. Noticeably better build quality and quality control.
3. Better sounding effects, especially reverbs.
4. 24bit, 96khz
5. 6 customizable headphone outs (like the Zoom L20)
6. On/Off for phantom power on each track.
7. Noticeably improved customer service.

I'd be willing to pay a lot more if someone made a pro version of this. The SSL Big 6 is close, if only it had more channels and inserts and came with a built in digital recorder...

Otherwise the Model 24 is the Rolls Royce of mixers for out of work dad rock bands who have time to navigate Tascam's poor quality control and lacking customer service.

Easy to Use, Great Results

By Matt from Clinton, CT

We use this mixer for recording live events that will be mixed and mastered for later release. For this reason, rather than the Main Outs, we use the Aux Outs for our PA system, giving us control over which tracks can be heard by the audience, while also ensuring that all tracks are recorded at their best level. It works brilliantly. The only issues we have had are (1) when compression is used on any track, sometimes the compression light shows up on other tracks, even though it is not active there. (2) We would love to see a better lcd and menu. (3) At quiet events, the click of pressing buttons is quite loud (arming tracks, mute, menu buttons, etc).

I LOVE this console

By Matthew K. from Matawan, NJ
Music Background: Professional mixing/mastering engineer, live sound engineer, professional session/touring drummer, lighting/sound designer

I am a professional mixing and mastering engineer who also does live sound. When I saw the capabilities of this mixer it was a no-brainer. It has not disappointed me! Even my live sound clients have noticed the difference in the sound quality. It's a great mixer with a fantastic sound! Nice warm pre-amps with lots of gain. Compression and EQ sound great too and the built-in fx are a nice touch! I personally like the studio reverb. Highly recommend!

Auto punch is terrible

By Sweetwater Customer

Great sounding converters. But the Auto Punch is not what it should be. It leaves terrible thump artifacts. If you manually punch in & out it works really well. The point of auto punching is you can concentrate on the performance. The HD24 from 22 years ago is capable of doing and auto punch flawlessly.

Almost what I needed...

By Sweetwater Customer

This thing is just ok. The preamps sound good on snare and kick, but hihats sound very harsh to my ears and I couldn't make it better no matter what I did with the eq. On 2 other mixers my hihats sound fine using the same mic. Other than that, it worked pretty well with my windows pc, no major issues. I ended up returning it because I didn't love the sound. The mixer looks beautiful though, but they have some tweaking to do on the preamps to make so we can make a decent recording. If Tascam made a version 2 I'd probably buy it.

Great tool but missing some features

By Nick from Maine, USA
Music Background: Home-recordist for 8+ years

I came from a Focusrite 18i8 going into Logic Pro X. I got tired of working on the computer and really wanted to go DAWless, and for that, this thing is pretty great. Using real knobs and faders has reignited my passion and creativity for music creation. The 24bit recorder is more than adequate, and the on-board effects are a worthwhile addition. Also being able to make a sub-mix and "bounce" tracks is great, however I haven't found a need to do this yet.

However, the interface here is a throwback to the 90's/early 00's, and can be a little frustrating at times, especially creating a new track or scrubbing through the track. Sometimes you'll be RW or FF with the jog wheel and it will skip a few seconds in the opposite direction, kind've 'one step forward, two steps back'.

I would've also liked more inserts, as only being able to send out each track individually over USB is a slight bummer, (no multitrack reel to reel possibilities). And I find having no RCA main outs to be a bit of an odd choice, but I suppose XLR->RCA cables are easy enough to get a hold of.

All in all, I'm sure as a live mixer this thing would be amazing. As a multitrack recorder, it makes the mark in all the areas that really count, and it's totally possible to go DAWless, especially routing in outboard effects through the monitor and back into a track, as long as you take the "primitive" interface in stride. It's basically a digital tape machine, and there's a lot to like about that!

Waiting on replacement

By frank f. from holyoke, MA
Music Background: Former professional musician now turned hobbyist

My faders all stopped working when I disconnected it from the DAW. NO matter what mode I put it in the faders did nothing. I was surprised to say the least, but Sweetwater sent me another unit that should be arriving today.

I am hoping to have better luck with this one.
After reading the reviews I am a bit nervous about this product.

Not recommended for anything other than mixing live music

By Josh

First one I bought was broken out of the box with an internal short. Replaced it and all seemed OK until I got into using it on my computer and it started producing random audio glitches and freezes every once in awhile. A search of the online community and I found that the audio glitches are common and if it happens during recording it is now part of the audio track, they also say that tascam does not come forward with any fix or warranty for the issues. I recommend getting it for live music, even as a stand alone recorder but the interface aspect of it is way to buggy

Great recorder, but...

By JR from Dallas, Texas
Music Background: Musician

What beautiful wooden side cheeks...but they're actually plastic. Is there a way to record the effects while tracking, or are the effects only for live application? Do you need to "bounce" a track with the effects in order to record the effects? I wish every channel had an insert.

Plug, Play & Record. Mix & Share

By Sparky O. from Los Osos, CA

When I bought the Model 24 in early 2019 I was reminded of that feeling I got when I set up my first Mac. Simple, intuitive. When connected it was like, "What do you want to do next?". It has recorded hours of practices and jams with minimum set-up. Transfers to Logic Pro flawlessly. All for a grand? Thanks Tascam!

Solid Build

By Gary from Maine

Needed to replace my aging AW4416 and get a few more tracks. This unit is built pretty well and you getting a lot for your money. Pretty easy to use and I was up and recording in a few hours after setting it up and plugging it in. If your looking for the analog feel this is an inexpensive way to go.

Exactly What I Wanted!

By John

I had done my own research and landed on the Model 24. This mixer functions EXACTLY as advertised and I am completely satisfied. It sounds amazing, it's easy to use and once it's setup, you have nothing to worry about. 10/10. The product was on back order when I made my purchase but my rep James did a fantastic job communicating with me during the entire process and that's why I keep using Sweetwater.

Great for the Price.

By Sweetwater Customer from AMES, IA
Music Background: Broadcast Engineer, Production Engineer, Amateur Studio Musician

Waited a long time for this one. Needed the ability to record tracks individually for all my hardware synths. DAW's are great but there is something about being able to physically make adjustments is more rewarding for me in terms of process. Anyway, this does a lot for a good price. Once you get used to how it functions the workflow is easy. Only gripe is having to us DI boxes for my unbalanced instruments. With Mackie and Behringer they have the matching transformers that allow you plug in balanced or unbalanced. You can make unbalanced to balanced cables in most circumstances (short cables only) but not everybody has the skill, knowledge or tools. From experience, I know that plugging unbalanced into balanced may work and sound fine at first but eventually you will start to have problems if you connect a lot of unbalanced equipment. However, I am willing to look past all that for all the other capabilities you gain. Worth the price.

Solid unit, great feature set for the price point

By Sweetwater Customer

The Model 24 offers a very unique feature set, and the amount of features they've managed to include for the price point is impressive. However, you don't get something for nothing, and as a result there are a number of features I would have liked to see here that didn't make the cut. That said, they were very smart about what features they chose to include.

A little background: I'm primarily a live audio engineer, but I also do on-site recording and mixing from time to time. I acquired this board because I prefer working in the analog domain, and wanted something I could take to small bar and basement gigs without having to bring a bunch of outboard. With this board doubling an all-in-one unit that I could also use for on-site recording, it was a no-brainer.

What I like:
- The build quality is good. I've noticed some other reviews saying otherwise, but I would disagree. Everything feels solid. The faders and pots have a smooth travel with an appropriate amount of resistance. The push-buttons feel fine to me as well.
- The graphic EQ can be assigned to either the main L/R outputs, or auxes 1 and 2 for your monitor mixes to help combat feedback (at least, as well as you can with a one-octave GEQ).
- The one post-fade aux is routed to the FX engine by default, but there is a TRS output for this mix that bypasses the FX engine, so if you don't need vocal FX this board can be configured for sub-on-aux use (or an external FX unit if you prefer).
- The screen can be used as a meter bridge in banks of 8 inputs, which makes up for the fact that there is only one LED per channel for signal level (green for signal present, red for clip)
- Compressors on the first 12 channels: These are 4:1, one-knob compressors, so parameter control is non-existent, but for basic vocal compression they do the job just fine. Saves a couple of outboard racks.
- Channels 21/22: I call this the "house music" channel. Equipped with stereo RCA and 3.5mm line-ins, but the main attraction here is the bluetooth receiver, a very welcome addition.
- The submix has independent outputs, as well as being assignable to the main L/R. You can great creative in how you use this - I've used it as a basic mix group, for feeding an additional FX unit, and to feed fills.
- The LEDs for the main L/R meterbridge are vibrant and easily seen in daylight.

What I don't love:
- No polarity invert switch on any of the inputs. However, if you're handy with a soldering iron, it's easy to make a few polarity-reversed cables to keep on hand. Obviously would have been nice to have this feature built-in, but hey, if that's what they had to do to hit the price point, at least there's an easy work-around.
- Inserts on only the first two channels. Again this is an obvious cost-saving measure. But with compressors every mono input, where are you most likely going to need inserts during a show? Gates for kick and snare, channels 1 and 2.
- Bluetooth range is not great. If you're playing music off the phone in your pocket, you probably won't be able to walk around the whole venue without dropping audio.
- FX engine can be muted digitally from the menu - I cannot think of any advantage to being able to mute the FX engine from the menu when there is an independent, physical "FX mute" button on the face of the console. If you were to accidentally mute it from the screen and navigate to another page, it won't be immediately obvious that the FX engine is muted. This could be problematic during a show.
- The insert point for the digital interface for DAW/SD recording and playback is after the compressors and before the EQ. This means that when recording, any compression is committed to disk, and you cannot use the compressors during mixdown. I would have liked to see the interface insert point be pre-compressor.
- Converters aren't stellar, which should be expected given the price point. During mixdown, I generally find myself more satisfied with the sound coming from the analog outs than after printing to stereo using the internal converters. If you have a dedicated interface, even something like a Scarlett 2i2, I would recommend using that to print your mixes.

Overall, this is a versatile, well-built, nice-sounding analog board with a feature set you won't find anywhere else for the price point. There are inherent limitations to this console that were necessary to keep the price down, but if they aren't deal-breakers for your use case, this board should serve you well.

RAD

By Smetana from AZ
Music Background: all musics

I've had the M24 for about 13 months now.
I've read complaints about the universal 48V power-(buy a couple preamps),the latency-(get off the computer), the "build quality"- really? it's a Tascam, go buy a Neve board...
Anyway, I have nothing negative to say except perhaps I agree with the folks who say the manual isn't much help because it's really not very in-depth. That, and the lack of a mastering processor built in. (I transfer the stereo mixes to a DP-08 and master them in there-it works great.)
I purposely waited for a spell to review this unit so I could give an informed opinion.
I absolutely love it. Maybe one day I'll buy a good reel/reel tape machine but until then you couldn't drag me in front of a computer screen to record music.

Great Mixer/Recorder

By Joe from Michigan
Music Background: Self taught

Per the picture, I run the TASCAM M24 into my TASCAM 32SD, and use it as a mixer, tho the M24 works great as a recorder on its own. The M24 has good on-board effects, good compression and panning capabilities. The M24 is very easy to use. The "album" Neutral Earth- Current, Volts and Ohms, (available on YouTube) was recorded using this set-up. Two songs (Blue Leech & Neolithic Traveler) we're recorded using the M24 alone. Give a listen if you want to hear what is possible. I also own a TASCAM DP-02 and NEO 2488. I'm happy with all my TASCAM purchases.

Great mixer/ interface

By John d. from Kingston

I got this console to use primarily as an interface, to use in conjunction with ableton 9.. This console lets you track out each channel individually in software for individual processing of each channel.. pots and faders feel middle of the road but certainly not cheap.. from the little bit I've had to deal with the built in software, its is very straight forward and reminds me of an akai mpc workflow.. overall I got this as a step up from a 4 channel interface, to tie everything in my studio together and I could not be more pleased..

Home recording

By William from Ohio
Music Background: Guitarist, violinist, piano hack, player of anything useful, composer, composter, communications expert, complicator, congratulationist, comrade, container.

Ive been an avid home recording junkie for well over a decade, using 40-50lb 8trk mixers, reel-to-reel machines, all-in-one cassette multitrackers. Since i have an aversion, perhaps abhor digital audio workstations and the tedium of sitting at computers scrolling about w/ mouse n keyboard, i decided to give the model 24 a go...more tracks than ive ever had access to in a home recording sutuation, and the UI is both familiar and easy to navigate. I still find i prefer my tape machines out of habit and a little spite, but this is proving to be a great mixer/mult-trk recorder once set up to taste, and a quick and painless unit to record any impulsive moments of creativity...and the delete-file option is great the next day. It definitely save on CS and tape reel expenses. Totally worth the money, if you have it to spare.

Punches Way Above it’s Weight

By Tom from Brooklyn, NY
Music Background: Professional Recording Engineer

I'm a full-time sound engineer for music and film. At my studio I have an API mixer, pieces from Neve, UA, Manley, SSL, etc. I bought this for a specific location sound job, and have since kept it as my home and travel multi-channel rig. I am absolutely in love. I have more fun recording on this thing than the main rig in my full-service recording studio. It's just so fast and easy to use, tracking an idea or a part comes without any obstacle, and to me that's priceless.

Could there be incremental improvements on future models? Yes. But for the price, there is nothing I've used that even comes close to the amount of creative efficiency in this unit. Grand slam, Tascam.

Best live recorder

By Sweetwater Customer

I love this thing. I have never captured a live performance and mixed to the audience with several controllable line outs. Vocals are awesome I used plate reverb on the last session, but the other options are available for effects. I can mix onboard or into my DAW and use the board to mix as I play back. Adjust volumes. We switch lead vocals between 3 people. I feel as if I'm conducting An orchestra mixing, controlling levels sweeping pan on the fly.

I can send out on board mixed down Wav files and import from computer. I could use it as an audio interface but have I have not done that.

I love it

Great Simple Multi-track Recorder

By Bill from Tampa, Fl
Music Background: Long time drummer and fledgling songwriter.

What I needed for my very small home studio is a mixer that has a lot of channels without a big learning curve. The Tascam Model 24 fills that bill exactly. I don't have room for the computer (DAW) that is required with the very nice digital mixers so the Tascam does everything I need without the use of a computer. If my space situation changes in the future, the Tascam can be used with a DAW. I really liked the short learning curve associated with an analog desk! If thats what you need, I highly recommend any of the analog Tascam mixers!

Great Sounding Preamps and Effects, Perfect for Recording Rehearsals, but Feels Cheap

By William L. from Atascadero, CA

My Presonus 16.4.2 gave out on me from a well known defect, and after some disappointing back and forth with the company, I decided to buy this Tascam instead of having it repaired.

What I like:
-The preamps sound way better than the Presonus
-The recording options are awesome- (SD or USB-DAW), punch in-out, etc.
-The color design is cool
-It's a really easy to use board.

However, I do miss a lot of the Presonus features- more aux sends, more routing options in general, two FX per channel, to name a few.

What I don't like:
-This thing feels really cheap to me, especially because I thought the Presonus felt a little cheap, and
this board feels even cheaper. I feel like if I knock it off the console table, it won't survive. Does
everything have be made of cheap plastic these days? I was stoked on the wood sides and didn't do my
research into them beyond just looking at it, I was pretty bummed (though not surprised) to see that
they are indeed plastic. The knobs and faders on the the Presonus felt better, and the steel chasis
made it feel like it could take a hit.
-Global Phantom Power is unfortunate. Another feature the Presonus wins out on. However, I don't plan on
recording an album with this thing, so I'm not worried about using expensive condenser mics on it.

I'll probably keep it, because it sounds and looks so good, but if the Presonus 16.4.2 wasn't so old and prone to defects, I'd be repairing it and sending this thing back.

Tascam 24 Sucks

By Michael M. from Cameron, MT
Music Background: Professional Artist

Bought this thing nearly a year for use in my studio with live recording sessions. For a few months I put up with the fact that the left channel on playback would drop out and when I pushed any button on the console it would come back. Finally after hearing several of the artists complain and my own frustration I contacted Sweetwater about getting it fixed. They were great about it but I had to pay the $100 shipping to Sweetwater. So I did. They in turn sent the unit to Tascam to be repaired. Studio down for two months during this period. I finally get the unit back and the enter button on the unit does not work rendering the unit useless. I am currently contacting Sweetwater about a refund. Unit is less than 1 year old and hasn't worked properly the entire time. I don't know if this is a problem with the quality of Tascam but don't have the time or money to keep this up. I would not recommend buying this product.

Good machine, but..

By Gil from Colorado springs
Music Background: Studio engineer, guitarist, vocalist.

Good preamps, toy-like phasers. Critical flaw for the model24 is that you cannot use the entirety of the EQ or compression when recording to the SD card, which is pretty damned lame. The EQ and compression are only for the main outs, e.g. live mixing. Again, you cannot record and use the EQ and compression to the SD card. Using the tascam as an interface is also not ideal, it's very tasking on the computer, just get a separate interface to plug directly in. It does make high quality recordings though even with no EQ or compression, but they are naked, raw signals for use with a DAW. All in all very good but very annoying, I would not recommend for studio use, I'd go with a zoom livetrack or presonus, but great for live usage and some DAW integration.

Still Learning

By Shane from Utah
Music Background: 4 years percussion, 15 years musical instruments

This is the first mixer I have ever used, so dont let my inexperience change your mind. So far I love this thing. I've only had it about a week and I am still needing an SD card to be fully functional. I love what it's capable of. I read in a review probably elsewhere that the fader sliders are cheaply made and break. Either it was an earlier model or the customer was lying to cover up his abuse of the product. I don't see how the sliders could break unless they were hit with something or something heavy fell on them. Only 3 stars because I dont have an SD card to use withot.

Great sound; Incredible value

By Kevin B. from TN
Music Background: Musician, songwriter, recording engineer

Really a 3-in-1 product. A live mixer, multi-track digital recorder, and DAW interface all in one. I bought the 24 and the 16 to use to collaborate with another musician that lives several states from me. I created a template in Pro Tools that works with both. I record my guitar and vocal tracks, copy the template and audio files to his computer over Team Viewer, he adds his bass part and vocals, copy it back to me and I complete everything on my end. Awesome sound quality. The built-in multi-track recorder is awesome for capturing sudden ideas with just a couple button presses. Incredible quality and sound and one of the most versatile mixer/interfaces ever.

Great product

By Dave from Pa
Music Background: Playing for 30+ years, in the same band since 2004!

The Tascam model 24 is great. It does everything I need it to and more. Tascam's customer support is also top notch via their forums. This mixer does it all. I can record easily at home, bring it to gigs when the country opens back up for easy recording of all our live stuff or just throw a giant house party to please the neighbors! I highly recommend this mixer also I would get the rc1 or 3 footswitch for easy punch in/out. Jeff from Sweetwater is the man. Sweetwater is by far the best online music retailer. I plan to continue my gear purchasing from them. I also love my custom shop Les Paul junior! Thanks Jeff!

Not a good decision

By Timothy L. from Florida
Music Background: Singer, songwriter, multi instrumentalist, producer

Let me start by saying that Sweetwater and Mark Johnson have been wonderful in their handling of my adventure with the Model 24. The first one I received worked fine for a couple months then just mysteriously stopped booting up. No recording functions, no mixer, no nothing. After shipping it back to Sweetwater, they sent me another one, (after my contacting Mark Johnson my service rep.) The second one arrived and after a couple months of use, the recording functions ceased working. The mixer still functions, but the digital effects do not function as well. I don't want another one. I think TASCAM has some problems with this unit. The idea behind this unit is great when it functions properly. But having TWO malfunction is a red flag to me. If considering purchasing one, I'd be wary. I know I'm done with it.

Perfect for my needs

By Robert T. from Eureka, CA
Music Background: Semi-pro for decades

I really am loving this thing. I was looking at mixers to handle my eurorack and keyboard synths, and came across this device. I was using an older Korg 8 track digital recorder and it was fine except for no AUX sends. Once I saw this Tascam I knew it was the one for me. Works perfect for my setup and gives me a lot more options than I had before. Options for tone sculpting on the fly, layering delays, live performance, demos, and more serious recording projects. It's just beautiful. The Bluetooth channel is great. The AUX sends are just what I wanted and work great along with the on-board effects. It sounds really good too. The compressor is handy for simple things. I'm glad I got the 24 and not the smaller version. Shipped very fast. My favorite new piece of gear. Only problem for me is getting used to jamming on it before I bring it out to play live dub sets solo, and electro sets with my band.

Frozen Screen of Death

By daniel r. from PLACERVILLE, CA

After just a few months of intermittent use, The screen has officially froze "TASCOM Model 24" . normally this is where you could cycle options, choose effects and change system settings. Now all the effects and recording ability is unavailable and my computer does not recognize interface. I reached out to sweet water and have had a bad experience with customer service. Super bummed out on this one.

I read through forums and apparently this is a growing issue. Tascam, please fix asap.

Just a beauty

By David from Colorado
Music Background: Professional singer songwriter

I am an addict for sound gear and am always looking for gorgeous pieces. Been on the hunt for a solid, live mixer that can also record without complexity- this beast does it all. And it’s just beautiful to look at. Feels like I’m in a studio from ‘77 every time I look at her!

But then you have 21st century technology under the hood. Great all round.

Awesome Mixer, Awesome Customer Support Experience

By Travis D.

I just got mine yesterday, firstly I'm really blown away by the build quality of this thing overall. It's heavy, knobs feel great, sliders, etc... My first run through with setup was such a pleasant experience... it's laid out very well, barely any menu diving. This thing sounds amazing so far. I've been looking for something that would finally work for my workflow without depending solely on the computer for all recording. This fits in so many ways I've not explored yet but it's intriguing in that it can playback from live input, sd card, or usb input... I've read this is a very unique feature for these devices and I'm very excited to try it out further, but my initial use suggests this is not only true but works remarkably well.

The only issue I've had with this device, and it's very likely explainable upstream from Sweetwater's control, but there was a slight blemish on the mains level fader that would be indicative of someone having put tape on it to prevent the slider from physically moving past a certain level. To be clear, this device seems to have shipped directly from the factory... I sent Sweetwater an image of it, and the offered me a replacement or discount. This is why I've always trusted Sweetwater for bigger purchases. Their support has always been spot on, even when I was just searching out options and not ready to buy. I opted for the discount as I'm likely going to restrict the fader anyway, and after my testing there is literally nothing wrong with this mixer whatsoever as far as I can tell. At the risk of sounding like a paid reviewer, I'm impressed both by this mixer and especially Sweetwater's customer support. It's a welcome change after having bought many audio interfaces that seemed awesome at first, but then found basically nothing to have worked, nor had any support for it afterwards.

Great Compact Mxier, I mean Recorder...

By Robert from Atlanta
Music Background: Sound Engineener for various theaters and bands for over 25 years

The Tascam 24 is a great live mixer for small to mid scale events AND it can record all the tracks individually. I've used to to run concerts and radio theater shows to great success. That the mixer has pretty good pre-amps and long faders is helpful. The on board compression is especially useful and if you've ever used an analogue mixer, you'll be up and running in 10 minutes.

The recording process takes a little longer but is not hard to handle either.

This mixer has two distinct shortcomings: First, with regard to phantom power, it's all or nothing. Individually channeled phantom would make this product much stronger. Second, there are only two aux buses. The ability to run two different effects on different channels would also be nice.

Still, if you're the front of house for a band that's 20 inputs or less, this board is easy to run and let's you record every show. For theater work, the ability for anyone to walk up and use the board means and easier time and you can easily record rehearsals to help your actors.

I love the concept. But it fails to do two absolutely crucial things

By Niels W.

++ Great form factor
++ Great versatility
- - Phantom Power on/off is global - instantly making you unable to use half your microphones
- - Audio resolution only 48KHz, excluding your material from use in Television and Movies, where 24/96 is a requirement.

You can argue from here to the moon whether you really need higher resolutions than 48KHz, but who is going to argue with the TV/Movie Industry'
just to loose a payday?

Personally, I think its best to start with the highest resolution you can comfortably afford to use. You can always degrade your signal later.

And there ARE 24/96 solutions that are no more expensive than the Tascam Model 24. Disappointing.

Thank you Tascam!

I finally have a mixer that does what I want it to do. So many features and so many possibilities. There’s things I thought I would never be able to do until I got this multitrack mixer. I haven’t messed around to much with the built in recorder via sd card but I’m sure it’s just as good! By the way if anyone knows how to monitor the feed from the as card and to monitor your inputs at the same time I would love to know how to do that. Great quality product, great sound and great customizable options all through out this entire board. And price is amazing

Good overall but highly unstable and prone to lose tracks

By Daniel L. from Tucson, AZ
Music Background: Studio Owner

I've been using this board heavily for a few months now and originally had planned to make it the main piece in my studio for tracking and quick mixes. I love the sound and the analog workflow, but unfortunately the built in software side of this unit is highly unstable. I get "failed to write" and file errors daily, where entire songs are lost or well performed tracks are rendered pure noise. I've stopped using it with clients as it's too unstable for the workflow, and quite embarrassing and time consuming when it breaks down. I've contacted Tascam/Teac about this problem but have not received a response. The only work around I've found is constant backups after good performances, where the tracks are stored on the computer to move back to the board as a new song if the files suddenly go into the ether. It's a pain, but I'm hoping some firmware updates will fix the problem. I'm writing this review because I've finally had my last straw with the thing.... Be warned: when it works, it's a joy, but I cannot recommend it for serious work in the studio or live recording.

Tascam Model 24

Lacks Reliability

By Dan from California
Music Background: Drummer

I want to love this board. The features are extensive and it quickly became incredibly critical in my workflow. That being said I've had 2 units fail on me for different reasons. The first had the startup screen become locked and I was unable to use for recording. The second unit failed on the headphone out jack where for the 30-45 minutes after startup sound would only come from the right (did extensive troubleshooting with different headphones/monitors/cables and narrowed it down the Model 24). Additionally the recordings have been getting noisier over time as well.

I use it for interfacing with my DAW (ableton live), for doing drum lessons on skype, recording rehearsals, auditions and live shows, for making videos for youtube, etc... It's features are so extensive that it quickly became an integral part of my productivity as a musician.

The first unit failure was simple because it happened a few weeks after purchase and sweetwater simply sent me a new one and I was never without it. The 2nd failure, because it's a few months after purchase requires me to send it in and wait for the repair until I have it back which really destroys my productivity and workflow.

I will likely search for a different unit with a greater track record for being reliable and sell this one once it is repaired. I don't believe my workflow should suffer as a result of a unit that is well within the warranty period but that seems to be the case here.

Overall I'm pretty bummed about this situation and this product.

Power Mixer and Interface

By Nathan S. from Illinoiz

I liked Tascam before but this mixer earned some real respect points. For analog and digital output, clean channels and quality EQ in this price range it was a clear choice, plus the recorder, onboard effects and 22 separate channel output to the DAW via USB, SD and 2 monitor and a 1 headphone output, this mixer is why 2019 gives me hope for technology of the future. and I believe the faders are assignable if the knobs are too my head might explode. Anyway, I use it for my Rode Nt1, Audio Technica AT2020, Minilogue, Vocoder, etc into a UAD MkII and everything sounds great! Nice job Tascam and good work Sweetwater, especially you Will for your support.

Great analog feel with digital benefits

By Cullen
Music Background: Amateur home recording, remote projects

This console has exactly what I want: plenty of mic/line inputs, powerful EQ, easy file transfer, and simple layout. Although the manual is lacking information in my opinion, it's very easy to figure out. I'm the drummer in a band doing remote recording and this console is perfect for me. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that alot of other digital recorders have, but I actually like that. If you can perform the music you want, the model 24 can capture it. I upgraded from the tascam dp002, so this is actually a huge step for me. I dont feel limited creatively, I feel the unlimited possibilities. Thanks sweetwater.

Bouncing tracks

By Sweetwater Customer

I am writing this not as a review, but to clarify that you can bounce tracks. You can bounce up to 8 tracks at a time by sending them to the sub mix. Manually route from the sub outputs to any of the stereo track inputs just like you would on an old style mixing deck. Doing this gives you up to 5 sub mixes. You could record drums with 8 mics bounce to a stereo track then put a compressor on a send just like you would with a large format console. Backing vocals on 13/14, keyboards on 15/16, drums 17/18, guitars 19/20 This glues the mix to have the polished results that analog consoles do so well.

Perfect Mix/Recording Unit

By Chance G. from SILVERDALE, WA
Music Background: Guitar, Bass, Keys, Vocals, Mixing, Studied Synthesis and Sampling

This thing absolutely kills!

Perfect fit in my small studio and even better Live potential for my band. This unit alone was able to take the ppace of my old desktop interface and my Peavey Md II mixer. The audio is perfect and the onboard EQ, especially those mids, have my bass singing! This unit saved me space and setup was as easy as could be. Long time fan of Tascam and they didn't disappoint. Only thing I really wish it had is a dedicated FX loop bay for external fx. If there is one, I haven't gotten that far in the manual yet. Overall, would absolutely recommend. Fantastic product!

Could be Better-OK for what it is

By Mike Y. from Massachusetts
Music Background: Gigging Guitarist

OK. I have had this for a few months now and although I like it, there are some problems with it in general.
1. Unless I have just booted up my computer, when I switch to storage mode, my computer doesn't recognize it. Sometimes it does. I uninstalled ASIO for All with no change. It is hard to load new firmware if you cannot get the computer to recognize it. Once out of storage mode, however, it works find with my DAW (Reaper)
2. Latency, even at the lowest setting is not good. I have a PreSonus Firebox that I bought in 2008 that has almost no latency in Reaper running multiple plugins including Superior Drummer and Bias software at the same time. If I solo one channel and run my guitar into a single plugin, I get noticeable latency.
3. When I use this as a normal audio interface, it defaults to channels 1 and 2. This means I have to pan 1 and 2 Left and Right and use those 2 faders for volume, or put them in a bus. I sent a message to Tascam to let us assign which channels it goes to, but there are no plans to do that.
4. When playing a video game (Just Cause 3), the music and fx go through the channels 1 and 2, but the voices go through channel 3.
5. The bluetooth connection is great as long as you are within 10 feet of the unit. Otherwise it cuts out constantly.

What I like about it:
1. SD Card recording is excellent and works great. Unfortunately, the storage mode doesn't work, so I have to use an SD card reader to pull tracks into my computer.
2. The routing capabilities are very good and easy to use. Like most, I would have liked an insert on every channel. I don't see why that could not have been done.
3. The on board compressor for each channel is fantastic and the eq's are very responsive.
4. Just as a mixer it is great. Recording is a snap. Having the ability to route the main channels back into the DAW if you are doing a mixer mix down would be a good feature.

What I would want in future versions:
1. Inserts
2. Monitor out. The screen on board is pretty easy, but an interface connection can make the unit more versatile.
3. I would love this to have lower latency. It is not bad, but right now if I want to record myself, I plug in my old interface.
4. Make it into a DAW control surface as well. Motorized faders that react to the DAW etc..

Nice unit!

By Captain from Ruidoso
Music Background: Sound engineer, musician

As a live mixer, the model 24 is amazingly easy to use and sounds great! It is a bit limited as a recording interface, but then again, extremely easy to use and sounds great, and being able to effortlessly do both at the same time, OR even just pop in an SD card and within seconds being able to record all your channels on separate tracks, to then mix in your daw, or straight on the unit itself, is very very cool! I would highly recommend the Model 24 to live bands or small music venues who are looking to easily run sound and record stellar sound, etc, or for home studio settings.

Fantastic recorder

By BC f. from ID
Music Background: 30 yr musician

Ok first I must apologise about my first review. SV from Oregon I did read the instructions, and called the techs at sweetwater and they told me the 24 wouldnt record individual tracks. So I wrote the review in a frustrated moment... But I sat down the next day and just started going thru everything and to my surprise and relief found that it does record each track. Sweet water was very good at calling the next day and letting me know I was given the wrong information. With that said I should have given a 5 star. This is why. Ive been using this machine now for a month every day and have really gotten some hands on.. what I like is the recording function is very easy to use, just select record for the track hit play and record button. It also provides a great practice tool so its all play and not edits and add ins... for example if I have bass on track 3 and drums on track 4, I can put my mic into track 5, select live and press play..I can practice all day and when ready select track 5 record and record the lead into track 5.. You get one shot at it, no edits but you can go back and delete track 5 if you dont like the take and record again. Each recording is automatically saved. The sound is great, but I suggest using a ribbon mic or condensor mic for the even better vintage sound...lots of mix selection and you can adjust while practicing on that track.. Once again. Sorry for first review .. Sweetwater your great and thanks for always following thru with questions or in my case not understanding the instruction manual and not being IT savy...This is a great recording tool and i really like it. Peace

Best Multitrack Machine Ever!

Fantastic sound quality. As a singer/songwriter and keyboard player its Super great for building songs track by track with out needing a computer, Having real knobs to turn is wonderfull and I'm really loving the patch bay on top instead of in the back.

Great System

By SV from OR
Music Background: Small studio owner

I just wanted to let everyone know that BC from Idaho is incorrect saying that this is not a song building system. He apparently must not have read the instructions. Each track can be recorded individually and then when done, switch the input to MTR and the track then plays back while you can record another track. It is a beautiful little system and is also ideal for converting 8 and 16 track tapes to digital.

I THOUGHT ABOUT RETURNING IT

By Ed

If you prefer spending as much of your time as possible playing your instruments and as little time as possible with the recording end of things, read on.
I couldn"t get Tascam"s model/mixing setting software to install correctly on my PC. I had a very disappointing experience with Sweetwater"s tech department. The individual I dealt with was not helpful and seemed to be clueless regarding my issue. I was going to return the unit because it didn"t work as advertised, and also partly out of spite.
Before doing so, I decided to give the Audacity mixing/editing software and manual a try (free downloads online). Unlike with Tascam"s Model Mixing software, there were no issues surrounding the download/install of the Audacity program and manual. For my purposes, this program is working excellent. I do my final mixing on the Tascam 24 and then copy the left and right master files (Tracks 23 and 24) to my PC via a USB cable. Using Audacity, one can very quickly and very easily combine these two mono files into one stereo WAV or mp3 file. Two clicks of the mouse and a song is born. Trim songs as well. Tascam"s program is no longer installed on my computer.
I understand this Audacity program won"t satisfy recording hobbyists/fanatics that use other programs, but it works just fine for me. The downloadable online manual is excellent and very user friendly, includes tutorials!
Tracks cannot be bounced on the Tascam 24 like they can on the older Portastudios. But with 22 simultaneous recording tracks, there"s no real need to bounce tracks, is there? Yes. Tracks 1 and 2 are the only tracks designated for dry guitar signals. However, by copying and deleting selected track WAV files via USB cable to the computer, one can move or copy track(s) which give the same results as bouncing. One can move/copy/delete WAV files from these two tracks and relocate them when there"s a need to free up tracks 1 and 2 for additional dry signal recording. I've only had the Tascam 24 for a short period of time. But by avoiding the Tascam's model/mixing settings panel software, so far so good!

Works for me

By Khaleef/D.
Music Background: Expert

I like it and will like it even more as I spend more time on it and get to know my way around even better. For anyone that wants to spend less time in front of a computer and more time making music, this is a good way to go. I've seen some confusion as far as what this is made for or what it does. Much of what I've seen as far as things some wish it did that aren't included is exactly what it was never meant to be. It's like buying a guitar and wanting the guitar to have the features of another instrument. This isn't a DAW with all the features you would like to have on a DAW. The idea is for those features you can do on a DAW, you can export the files from the SD card into a DAW. Musicians from the "Old School" days of tape and portastudios will get it. This is like going back to those days without the tape. It doesn't have the ability to route different channels to different tracks, but like I already said, it wasn't meant to do that. If it looks interesting to you, do the research to see if it fits your workflow. I can see where this might not be the product for a musician that likes working in the box. My only wish is I wish TASCAM had included a VGA connection to allow for a bigger display using a computer monitor. This is the only reason I didn't give it the higher rating. My only fear is TASCAM will come out with an expanded model with that and a few other functions not included on this one and then I'll be wishing I had waited for the next version and will have to go through the pain of selling or trading this one for the new, improved version.

Very pleased

By Spiderland s.

I"ve had the unit for about one month, and I"ve been using it as a practice tool to overdub myself. I"m impressed with the Bluetooth option I can put up any backing track or practice track and play along with it and record the results. I have used it to track one instrument at a time where I play everything and I"m able to overdub. And yesterday for the first time I was able to record my entire band live and give the files on the SD card to our guitar player who does all the mixes in logic and he took away the files and did a mix and we just got it and it sounds absolutely fantastic. Everything sounds as if you"re in the room. even though it is recorded digitally it has an analog sound. Very impressed, this was the machine I was looking for back in August when I ordered it and I just stumbled across it accidentally.

Model 24

By Sweetwater Customer

I have had it for about one week. What I noticed is that I am not on a computer! And not staring at my incredible plug-ins, seems to sit inside Cubase 9 fine. But I like working on it alone, makes you listen more clearly, and play more spontaneously! Makes you think of old school, and writing more completely. No auto tune, no fixing everything later. Looking forward to 2019 on this humble piece of gear!

First Impression is Positive

By Studio 1. from Kalamazoo, MI
Music Background: Recording Engineer

I've only had a day with the unit. The unit does not come with a SD card or USB cable, both of which you need to use the unit as a recorder or usb mixer. I have not used the mic pre section yet, but the quality for the instruments and line inputs seem of good quality. The single knob compressor seem usable, at least to prevent clipping. However they don't seem to function when the channel is set to USB returns. The built in effects are unremarkable but usable. The EQ section is modest but musical. The analog I/O options are very flexible, the build quality is decent, although some of the buttons feel a bit 'cheap' which makes me concerned about their longevity. The unit is 'plug and play' on the Mac, but requires drivers on a PC. I spent about four hours trying to get the unit function properly until I realized the USB cable I had was bad. Since then it has been smooth sailing. The recording function and USB storage mode are much like the Tascam DP 24 portastudio, not something you'd want to edit on, but works well for capturing. The unit is big but looks great and the lack of a wall wart or power brick is a welcome change from most modern gear. I can say it was a pleasure to mix a track with a traditional mixer. It should be a serious consideration for the front end of your DAW.
