Functioning as it should

By Sweetwater Customer

My old boom mic stand with a counterweight finally died after years of faithful service. On stage has always been a good brand in my experience so I picked this one up, plus a counterweight. So far everything is functioning just fine and as expected.

No microphone clip

By William A. from Avon, CO

Nice, well built stand. It does not come with the unbreakable microphone clip, the thing you slip the mic into. I have purchased other stands that come with this piece. Just be aware of that. But it is a good quality stand.

Decent stand for the money. My favorite

By Mike from Western Maine
Music Background: Long time / part time professional guitarist

I have four of these and I like them. One problem that you need to know about is that the plastic knobs on the tightening lever are too weak to last but you can get 1/4" #20 bolts, about 4" long with a lock nut. I get those and spray paint them black. The other thing to be aware of is that once you put a mic on and extend the arms, the stand may tip over if you bump it or extend it too far. You just have to be careful when setting up. Despite these two issues, I like these stands for their relatively low cost and their easy fold up and transport. I prefer not to use heavier more expensive stands for our five piece band, gigging about 40 gigs each year.

Parts great, execution lacking

By Robert R. from Fernandina Beach, FL
Music Background: played guitar since 1957, one band experience, folk rock, pop, acoustic gtr. & elec. gtr., 5-string bass.

The quality of the parts machined, the surface painting, controls to tighten the boom, guide clips to hold the mic wire, literally everything was of very high quality. The one thing that left me cold was when I installed one of the most common mics used in the entertainment industry, the Shure 58 mic, I was severely limited on how long I could adjust the boom from the base stand because the base didn't have enough weight to handle balancing the mic and would tip over and fall to the stage.

If "On Stage" would put a solid base that weighed about double the 3-prong base of this boom, it would solve the problem. As it is, I have to get a sandbag to plop down on one of the legs to use the mic at the boom length I want.

Buy a boom with a hefty base that will act as a decent counterweight so it will work properly.

Stand By Me

By Rick R. from Sierra Vista, AZ
Music Background: Former pro. Now part time warrior.

A great stand at a good price. Got tired of settling for cheapo mic stands that bend, break, fall over if you sneeze, etc. The telescoping feature is great. Recommend

Very Sturdy Build

By Anthony L. from NJ
Music Background: Amateur guitarist.

This is my first mic stand. It is built very well. My application is home use as I am not a gigging musician.

Assembly is simple...the only concern I had was connecting the boom to the mic stand itself. As another reviewer noted, it is very easy to cross thread the boom to the stand. One way to eliminate this potential problem is to disconnect the boom from the boom pivot, screw the pivot onto the mic stand, and then re-attach the boom to the pivot.

My only concern going forward: I can see where, for a heavy mic, the angle the boom makes with the mic stand might slip and be hard to set. I'll see as I use it more.

It works, if you can’t afford nicer quality.

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Beginner

This came in a bundle I purchased. The stand was difficult to screw together. Every time I take it apart, or swap out my microphone holder, the screw mount loses lots of metal shavings. That type of metal should not be used for screws.

The boom arm took longer to adjust than my K&M stand, but I ended up working fine to hold mics. If this is all you can afford, it works. I recommend using it where you can leave it up, and won't need to take it apart often.

Excellant Mic stand

By Jim A. from Florida

It is much sturdier than I expected for the price range. It came all together in the box and ready to go. I connected my Rode NT1 Microphone and was up and running. I have not had any problem with it trying to tip over, it has a perfect footprint to handle an extended boom. I am quite happy and would recommend this mic stand.

On stage stand

By DELBERT N. from Farmington, Michigan
Music Background: Professional vocals

its a good stand but with the AKG P220 the weight of the mic will cause it to fall over, unless its the mic, is over a foot stand. Not good when moving from side to side. I now us a weight on the leg so it won't fall from any position.

stripped knob right out of the box

By Andrea C. from CAlifornia
Music Background: professional musician for the past 25 years.

I bought a few of these last year, and today I finally opened up the box for the remaining one. The knob closest to the mic is stripped and I JUST took this out of the box...haven't even used it yet. .... I'll probably search for a better model in the future. I do like the fact that this one is lighter to carry to gigs, though. That's why this one WAS my favorite.

These are working out just fine

By Sweetwater Customer

I needed a couple of mic stands to hold some SE V7 mics in my studio. These stands are really nice. I’m not sure why some people are having quality issues other than actually trying to defy gravity and balance. As long as you don’t try to shape these boom mic stands like an ‘L’, you’ll be fine. Make sure you provide reasonable balance. As of the time of this review, Sweetwater has the best price for these mic stands. I recommend these for the podcaster and the music minimalist. I can’t speak on the reliability of these with reflection filters and anything else attached to them. But, if you want some good tripod mic stands, these have a pretty solid build that will last.

A Waste of Money

By TC T.

Worst mic stand ever. My stand disappeared and grabbed one of these as a temp replacement. Absolutely terrible. The wing nut adjusters to tighten and loosen the base and the arm never worked. The wing nut would tighten just fine when you were packing up, but when you needed to loosen it, the wing nut would back off and leave the screw locked in making it impossible to setup. Every time I would have to take pliers to get the screw out to release the lock. At my last show I could not get the arm screw to loosen to fold up the arm, which never made sense since no matter how tight you got it the arm was never secure. I gently pushed the arm down to fold it up and the entire thread assembly snapped off. Now it is completely worthless, not just mostly worthless like it was when I got it. I would have been better off tying some sticks together and taping my mic to it.

Poor wuality

By Sweetwater Customer

Received this item last week. Very light weigh and not road worthy for a weekend rock band. . The tightening handle fell apart as well. Even though it"s in the 20 dollar range I expected more from the on stage brand. Not going to bother to return it, not with the hassle....

Exactly what I was looking for...

By cory s. from Bonne Terre, MO

This mic stand fit my needs perfectly. It's sturdy and adjustable enough to fit my studio needs perfectly, but instead of being limited by a desktop stand, the MS7701B will also be great on stage. The price is good but I got it on sale which is great. Another fantastic transaction with Sweetwater accompanied by a helpful service call and a sweet bag of candy. Thanks again!

Horrible and Frustrating

By Sweetwater Customer

Are you mechanically oriented? This stand might work for you. For people like me that expected it to screw together easily, a frustrating and defeating experience. I tried for about an hour then threw it in the garbage. How does it go together? Seems like it should be self-explanatory, but nope Oh, maybe they included instructions....nope.

Pleasantly surprised!

By Sweetwater Customer

I didn't have very high expectations for these stands, being the cheapest ones available of their kind on Sweetwater's website. I was pleasantly surprised when I received them! The finish is great, the metal is very solid and sturdy. And, most importantly, the moving parts are well designed. They lock well, and the boom arm does not fall once you set it tightly!

Just Okay

By Ken M. from United States

This stand is ok, but you have to be careful with it. Threading the boom to the stand is tricky, it tries to cross thread very easy, and you have to make sure that the boom when extended is in line with one of the legs, otherwise it wants to tip over.

On-StageMS7701TB

By Michael from Portland, OR
Music Background: Studio Design and Systems Integration

This stand is well made, but for our application was just not quite right. We've modified it to make it work but I am not satisfied with it, even so.
These stands are intended for use by a guitar duo that does a little singing and we were trying to keep the stand low and minimize the distraction of it. The players are both seated throughout their sets.

Even after shortening the main vertical tube and the one that attaches to the adjustable boom, the stand is still unstable when extended far enough to place the mics correctly. I think the base needs to have a wider diameter and perhaps some additional weight in the center to fix that issue.

But, for the money, it's not a bad stand if you use lightweight mics (ours are fairly heavy...like U-89 and AKG C414's).

Great bang for the buck

By Michael K. from NJ, USA
Music Background: Bass player, live sound engineer

Lightweight but strong, and a proper mount for our SM-58s. Adjustable height and boom length provided plenty of options for our sit-down players and stand-up blues vocalists. On-Stage is a solid brand and I would recommend this product.

Great Value

By Dan from Niles, Mi USA
Music Background: Former pro musician on hiatus soon to re-enter live performance!

This is a great deal for the money. The boom tightening mechanism seems as though it will hold very well and I prefer the telescoping ability. The base legs have a solid click when opened up so moving the stand isn't any problem (my old stand legs would fold closed and could not be tightened). The only complaint is the stand height adjustment takes a lot of turns to loosen/secure it. Hopefully the black finish will hold up - if not out comes the black spray paint can!

Good, but not great.

By Wendell K. from Washington, DC
Music Background: pro musician, recording engineer, live sound hobbyist

I bought several of these for a church that does set up and tear down every week. They have served us well for a couple of years; I have only 2 complaints. 1) the screw to adjust the boom arm is not well-designed. It's too small, giving you no mechanical advantage when tightening or loosening. I have other stands with larger plastic knobs that are easier to grip and use.

2) After 2 years, they are starting to fall apart. Out of 6 stands, 2 are in trouble: one of the boom arm thumb screws has been stripped; another is detaching/coming apart where the tripod attaches to the stand.

I would have hoped to get more than 2 years of use out of these.

Fool me twice

By Jeff from Portland, OR
Music Background: Recording engineer, voice talent

So, this mic stand was recommended to me by an audio salesman to go with all of the other things I was purchasing. When it arrived it looked pretty solid, some of the joints maybe felt a little loose but that's to be expected. So it's working just fine for about three days and then the little nub on the end of the boom with the threads on it came loose and began to spin around, so my mic would flop around and only ever point down. I called the company about it and they were really nice and sent me a new one and even let me keep the old one. So I get the new one. about two weeks and the threads on the thing that keeps the boom in place strip, somehow they just become completely smooth. So I go back to using my old broken one and after a few days the same things happens.

Just figured I should share my experience. I seemed to find all positive reviews about these stands but they SUCKED for me.
