Heavy Duty Boom Stand

By Debbie from CA
Music Background: 50 years in the music business, keyboards, lead vocals

I was surprised to see how sturdy this mic stand is. My last mic stand, only a couple of years old, cost twice as much and was light weight and the extender leaver broke off. I had to duck tape it to get through the gig. Instead of trying to replace the parts, I decided to just fork out for a new one. $ dollars! Great price and sturdy as heck! Also, the knobs are threaded, no leavers that snap and break. Fantastic buy for the money!

Better than expected

By Ryan from Tampa, FL
Music Background: Studio owner

Very strong and sturdy mic stands. These days with the quality of most products not being what they say they are I wasn't expecting much but needed them fast. Was very surprised how goos these are. Definitely will buy again.

Heavy Duty

By L.A. M. from New York
Music Background: Former Musician, now sound company owner.

Love these. The only thing I hate is that it's fairly easy to lose the little thumb screws. I use this for all my gigs.

Solid but flexible micstand

By Troy D. from Grand Junction. CO
Music Background: Varied, everything from Marching band to Folk, to Rock to some Jazz

I now have 3 of these stands and use them every week at our long running Tuesday Jam. I get positive comments all the time from the other musicians at the jam on how solid they are and all the adjustments to them that are available I am very pleases with them.

Too popular mic stands.

By Troy D. from Colorado
Music Background: Everything from marching band to blues to rock to folk.

These heavy duty stands are so popular that several musicians at the local Jam I host every week commented on them and one of the two I had has now disappeared. I did reorder.

Great mic stand

By David from Maryland
Music Background: drums, vocals, sound reinforcement

If you're a drummer and have problems with your mic stand falling over from over extension and abnormal weight distribution, this stand is for you. Strong, sturdy, and does not fall over, even when fully extended with a Sennheiser e835 on it. Highly recommend this stand.

Great until the base bolt strips.

By Stevan
Music Background: Pro musician for 35 years

The wing bolt that secures the bottom of the tripod stripped, and now it's in a pile along with old mic stands that aren't supported by their manufacturers.
I've tried to find a replacement bolt with no luck. If On Stage would sell the part, it would extend the life of the stand.

I Wanted to Love It So Bad!!

By Kaulike P. from Hawaii
Music Background: Performing/Recording Artist, Producer, and Engineer

Thereʻs so much potential in this mic stand! It has great weight, so itʻs perfect for studio or a windy day at an outdoor gig. The only thing I noticed right off the bat was that the boom didn't sit tight. You can grab it and wiggle it around just a little bit. Not a huge deal breaker, but for $, itʻs kinda off-putting. About a year later, the tightening knob at the bottom stripped quite easily. I never over-tightened it or put this mic stand through any strain. I baby my gear. At $, itʻs hard to say I would buy it again. I rather get something that

Spent more money for this, but definitely not professional grade.

By Just D. from Madison Wisconsin area
Music Background: Full-time LoopingArtist playing 185+ shows a year before the pandemic hit. I also do studio session work, and play guitar or bass guitar for hire as a substitute for bands. JustDaveMusic.com

In short, I am a full-time LoopingArtist, and I was encouraged to spend more than the typical $30 for a stand. Since I've bought $25 and $30 stands, and they worked quite well for many years, I figured this would be a step up because I usually play about 185 shows a year, and I figured this would be heavy duty as described. it's not, it's mainly just "heavy".

I have a microphone stand adapter that holds two microphones so I can use the second microphone for various Looping, and after a couple months I was noticing the clutch was not holding as well as it should, and the microphones would start to go down below my mouth. I would have to adjust the clutch and raise the microphones during my gigs.

And then the screw at the very bottom that holds the stand tight so that the tripod legs can extend out started getting harder and harder to tighten. In other words, the center of the stand would fall to the ground while the three tripod legs were still stretched out. The small screw that tightens to hold the tripod legs no longer snugs them up. I literally had to go to a hardware store to buy a new one because it stopped working for some reason. Can't remember now why that was.

In short, two years later, I'm buying a new microphone stand, but to do my last gig of the week last week, I used a 20 year old $25 microphone stand, and it worked fine.

So this "heavy duty" stand it is more or less just heavy, weighing in at about 8 pounds.

Very good, affordable mic boom stand

By Peter C. from Dover, NH
Music Background: Drummer and sound technician

I've found this stand to be one of the best affordable heavy-duty boom stands available. It's rugged, well designed, and very reliable. The only issue I've encountered is that sometimes the tilt clutch doesn't hold the boom firmly at the set angle, allowing the boom to sag. I've had to take one apart and clean mold release off the rubber friction pads to get it to stay in position. But on the whole, it's a reliable piece of gear.

I shoulda bought some of these sooner!

By Paul B. from MD
Music Background: Enthusiastic guitarist for half a century

I do amateur home recordings of my music (original, instrumental music for guitars) for internet posting/streaming, using a growing collection of microphones. I normally use table-top mic stands for recording amplifiers, and floor stands for direct recording of acoustic instruments. The floor stands I had been using were adequate for small and light-weight mics, such as "pencil" condenser mics, but not well suited to larger, heavier mics. Having received an sE2300 microphone from my wife for Christmas, I decided that I needed a better floor stand to hold the mic securely. A customer support rep at sE Electronics recommended this particular stand that I am reviewing. I am pleased and satisfied beyond my expectations. The stand is very sturdy and sufficiently heavy to hold any microphone securely, and highly adjustable for proper mic placement. Additionally, the price of this stand means that I can purchase as many as a might need without breaking the bank.

Sturdy, and ready for anything

By Allen D. from Kentucky
Music Background: Singer, guitarist, songwriter, composer, home recording engineer, YouTube novice.

So, i got this stand, because i needed something more substantial for my home studio. Less expensive stands always seemed to have this issue with specific placement, in order to keep from tipping. With the telescoping boom, this stand works really well in my small, 5X6 vocal booth. I'm able to get the stand, mic, as well as two extra stands for recording video if i want to post to YouTube. Before, i was always pushed toward the back of the booth, due to the boom in my other stand not being able to telescope.
This stand is heavy duty, and will last me a long time. I don't know how long it'd hold up as a stage stand, i think if you used it as a set and forget for one specific person, it'd be great. Most stands, regardless of brand, have a limited lifespan onstage due to constantly adjusting them. This stand, however, takes less turns to loosen and tighten, which would most likely add to its life on stage.
All in all, for a sub 100.00 boom mic stand, i give this one 5 stars. Price, solid construction, and it's worth in my vocal booth are all definite positives for myself.

Dependable, well-made

By More T. from Michigan, USA
Music Background: Music teacher, performer, recording artist

This is a very good product for the money. Fittings are not mushy like some of the junk out there. The weight is moderate enough to stand as a medium boom for live playing or studio, but not so ridiculously heavy in transport.

Well-designed heavy-duty stand

By Peter C. from Dover, New Hampshire
Music Background: Drummer and audio technician

I needed to replace one of our older, cheaper mic stands and wanted something durable. I compared a number of stands and settled on this one, largely because it was heavy-duty and the price was reasonable. I'm not disappointed. It has a very solid feel, and the feet have a wide spread for stability. Highly recommended.

Rugged quality

By Ray T. from BOISE, ID
Music Background: Classical music background; physicist. Recording live since age 15.

I thought that with large diaphragm condensers weighing a bit over a pound I could get away with the MS7701TB's. Not so! They are fine for mics under half a pound (even then, there are limits). So I traded (thanks, Sweetwater - Kurt Cripe!) for these 9701TB's. WOW! Difference was night and day. The mics are now rock steady, the knobs and all fittings are first rate, and I am in full swing with live recording. Take it from me, these are high quality, and worth every penny for the upgrade.

Not a durable Boom

By Tetsuo H. from Los Angeles, CA

Stand-Up!

By Peter N. from Seattle WA
Music Background: 25+ Years of Blues, Soul, Jazz, Rock, Country

I needed to get a new mic stand. My old one would no longer grip at the base and it teetered when I set it up. So, I looked at Sweetwater's vast selection of mic stands. There were a lot of good ones, but my eyes glazed over with the breadth of the selection. I asked me Sales Engineer, Randy Poteet, to select one for me that was solid, durable, and a good value. As usual, he hit the nail-on-the-head! I love this new stand. It's considerably heavier than my old one. It adjusts to any position I need. Basically, it does the job it's intended to do. I'd highly recommend the MS97701TB+ Heavy-Duty Tele-Boom Mic Stand.

Solidly built, but SO heavy!

By Sweetwater Customer

This is a great mic stand, solidly made, but so very heavy! It's great if you are keeping it in one place, but adding it to an already-heavy inventory of equipment being lugged to and from gigs, it just has too much weight. Would likely not have purchased it, had I been able to feel its weight.

MS9701TB Mic Stand

By Perry S. from Jadwin, MO

Horrible Stand - Unsafe

By Bill from NC
Music Background: Pro - 30+ years experience

This is, easily, the worst stand I've ever owned. Yeah, it's heavy, but it falls apart all the time -- everything has to be screwed in and comes apart way too easily and then only spins and spins trying to put it back together. I wouldn't put anything on this stand I cared about keeping and I'd never use it on a gig... When it fails (and it will) you'll be stuck borrowing a stand from someone else to finish the gig.

Heavy duty!

By Sweetwater Customer

Rugged, heavy duty mic stand! Holds up to the rigors of "the road"! Very pleased.
Only negative would be that it slips slightly when boomed out all the way, with a heavier mic. But hoping it just needs a little break-in time!

Very disappointing

By Michael R. from Mooresville, NC

It is a HEAVY stand....not sure about heavy duty - the small screw that tightens to hold the tripod legs no longer snugs them up after less than 10 shows - the stand looks brand new - no scratches or anything but is now pretty worthless. If you left this set up (in a church or something) it would be ok - if you are setting up and tearing down regularly - Pay a few $ more and get something that will last

By Sweetwater Customer from Grand Rapids,MI

This is probably the best stand in this price range. It is a durable- well built stand. One noticeable difference with this stand is that it is much heavier than the higher end stands. I bought 2 of theses and would not hesitate to buy more. I am very happy w/this purchase.

The Tank of Mic Stands

By Steve from Boone, NC
Music Background: Hobby

This mic stand was part of a microphone bundle and was blown away when it arrived. For what I paid for the entire package I thought this would be a flimsy, lightweight piece that I would have to replace quickly. I was wrong. This mic stand has weight. Not too heavy, but you can tell it's well built. Ease of use and lots of options to put the mic exactly where you need it.

Nice Mic Stand

By Joe D. from Harvard, MA
Music Background: Amateur - been picking around since the early 60's

I have one of those 12 year old stands with the heavy cast base, and this stand is much nicer, more flexible, and has a longer boom arm. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 stars for two reasons: the center thread that attaches the boom arm is a pretty fine thread and the boom arm is somewhat unwieldy when screwing it on, so do it slowly to avoid possibly starting to cross thread the threads and the center snugger for the height adjustment seems to work much better when the top cross arm is attached, unlike my old one that will snug with or without the cross arm attached. All in all, if I need another stand in the future, I would buy another one of these.

High mass, low quality

By Danny from Honolulu, HI
Music Background: Pro Musician

I heard great things about this stand, so I bought it. Upon arrival, I was impressed with the solid feel and stability, however that was all short lived. After a month of regular use, the clutch broke, mid-setup. I have seen more durability from stands half this price. If you want quality, go for a K&M. If you're on a budget, stick to a cheaper, lighter-weight stand. Stay away from this one, it is not a very good design.

Very Good Stand

By James R. from Claude, TX
Music Background: Hobbyist. Play in Church.

This is a very good stand, and heavily made. "9 lbs of steel" is written on the box it came in. I find it very sturdy, and the quality looks to be top flight. It seems to be quite large when employed, but it folds up into a very small, easy to manage size for storage, or transportation. I recommend it to anyone who needs a boom stand. I might buy another soon!

Not sure why its called 'heavy-duty'

By Anthony from Denver
Music Background: Studio Recording

If this is supposed to be the 'heavy-duty' stand from on-stage stands I would hate to see their regular ones. It would be great for live use but it is highly insufficient in the studio, especially if you're putting any weight on it (like a reflexion filter)

Seems solid - tip for installing the boom

By Luke

Just got 2 of these and they seem like they're going to work great. I was having some trouble threading the boom on to the stand and was afraid I'd cross thread it. My solution was to put a little petroleum jelly on the the threaded part of the stand, and then the boom went on really smoothly without worry of cross threading.

Decent stand for the money

By Jordan R. from Denver, CO
Music Background: Voice Over Actor, Project Studio Engineer, Musician.

Overall this mic stand is decent. It offers multiple adjustments that allow you to angle a microphone in precise areas. Unfortunately I've experienced the same problems as a previous reviewer. When fully extending the boom or hanging a microphone horizontally the arm will sag quickly. This is after very little use, practically brand new. I plan on buying a more expensive stand to accomplish longer arm microphone positioning.

On-stage Stand ms9701tb

By Richard

The ms9701tb was a pleasant surprise. Very affordable, rugged and easy to set up. It has a nice wide tripod base that's very stable and when you get everything positioned the way you want, it doesn't'creep.' I would reccomend this microphone stand to any musician whether beginner or professional.

Good stand if you do not need full extension

By Vernon from Everson Wa USA
Music Background: Drummer ,Live Sound for Worship

I purchased 2 of these stands over a year ago . They have worked ok except that at full extension when I come back after setting them a couple hours later the mic is now on the key board instead of in the air. I have been pulling wrenches for 36 year and can't get the clutches tight enough to stay up if i pull any harder they are going to break or strip the threads.

Great Mic stand and boom

By Ted J. from On the Coast
Music Background: Composer Arranger and more.....

This mic stand is so easy to use, I wonder why I didn't buy it sooner! It sits out of the way when not in use, and swings right out when I need it! Doesn't sag, and holds my mic right where I want it. Now it's easier to focus on the music, the sound, the experience, and the feel of my songs without having to wonder why doesn't this mic stay in place. I bought this to go along with a newer mic from Sweetwater, and it is serving me well! If only it had a music stand, and could turn the pages........
