Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy Analog Delay Pedal with Modulation Reviews

Analog Delay Pedal with 550ms of Delay Time, Modulation, and True Bypass

A good analog delay pedal can be truly inspiring to play through. But a good analog delay can easily reach into the upper echelon of pedal prices. Luckily for the budget-minded guitarist, Electro-Harmonix has offered up the Memory Toy. A close cousin to the legendary Memory Man, the Memory Toy puts the kind of lush analog delay guitarists crave in your hands at a nearly unheard of price! Stomp onto the Memory Toy and you have access to up to 550ms of delay time — plenty for thickening up solos or spiraling off in to sweet analog chaos! Add more flavor to your sound with the switchable modulation, which puts a touch of chorus on the Memory Toy's tone.

Memory boy

By Jsilva from Texas on December 12, 2023

I got one recently . I'm selling my dd3t and getting another one of these. Very organic, musical. The sounds on the mod setting are good also. I hate how the dd3 adds that mid high frequency that I don't like. Like I said, this pedal is musical. The guy I play acoustic with noticed it right away. I have 55 years of playing experience, still do 3 to 6 gigs a week.

So sweet.

Compact with big glorious sound. I'm glad to have this on my board.

Small, simple, easy to use and a good price.
It does what it says it does. I've got no complaints.

Fun and inspiring

By Jax on August 7, 2019

This pedal is way fun to play with. It inspires me to write new songs, and is very small so it"s great for pedalboards. You may want an echo with more features, but I don"t really need tap tempo, etc. because I can just get on a knee to adjust this. I love the warm analog sound- some might prefer a less colored digital tone, though. I love the mod switch too, which is adjustable inside... it adds a spooky wobbly tone. Great price & has everything I need in a nano casing

Great Delay Pedal

Been using this pedal for a while and I just love the tone that I can get from it. The tonal range is amazing and it's a great pedal to add to any collection. Great value and another great product from EHX

Pros: Organic REAL delay sound
Cons: no tap delay.

Perfect Fit!

By Steve Taylor from Buena Vista, CO USA on February 19, 2013 Music Background: Hobbyist and ex-Pro

I purchased the Memory Toy to function as a slap-back delay. I already had a Memory Boy and the Memory Toy is just as analog and just as functional for my purpose -plus- it fit in the last remaining small space on my pedal board. Thanks to Bob Mondok, my Sales Engineer for a perfect match!

PS: The EHX Black Finger is my favorite compressor, and the Memory Boy keeps the same quality going ...

Dope

By Sweetwater Customer from salt lake city, Ut on May 7, 2012 Music Background: pro musician

I was never a huge fan of delay, but I saw a picture of deftones' pedalboard on their website, and sure enough, they had one. that was reason enough for me to buy one on a whim. I gave it a 5 because for my purposes it sounds excellent. i mostly use it to thicken up guitar parts rather than repeats, and i usually keep the modulation switched off. for $100, you'd be hard pressed to find a simpler analog delay thats as well-built and true bypass.

Great Pedal

By MattKrush from Saginaw MI on November 11, 2017 Music Background: Playing for a long time

Probably the best "budget" analog delay you can get.
Sounds great once you set it for your playing style/speed. Has enough push to actually stand out and not get buried by the other instruments for leads.

Electro Harmonix Memory Toy Pedal

By Sweetwater Customer on February 16, 2018 Music Background: 50 year veteran of live performance and recording.

As a retired, "mature" musician I gaze fondly at all the gear available nowadays, but find the costs hold me back from purchasing most of what I personally like. Sweetwater's pay as you play has enabled me to purchase a few things I have always wanted. I decided on the EHX Memory Toy after a LOT of online shopping, and it is exactly what I wanted, an analog delay with the sound quality of the EHX pedals. I mostly use the delay, which has a wide delay range from slapback pickin' to slow lose-yourself echos that go on forever. I don't really need tap tempo, as I usually have no problem manually setting the delay. . This is the second nano pedal I have bought from EHX,(I also own the "Hot Tubes" pedal which gives me a nice tube type overdrive and a boost to the signal), and at the price I don't think you can find a better bargain. Look out Edge and David Gilmour, here I come! I am gearing up to pay and play myself a Les Paul from Sweetwater to go with my Stratocaster this coming year. The Memory Toy is the best delay pedal for under a hundred bucks available in my humble opinion. And the service at Sweetwater is second to none, my agent in charge actually called me to check on the sale! Outstanding.

ANALOG

By Raymond Rhett Rock from middle of Indianer Ha on August 7, 2017 Music Background: been playing guitar for 32 years and til I die

I thought the price was nice for analog delay that I hadn't had for a long time. I had been using a multiefects unit for delay and chorus and I didn't like the delay settings. The MOD setting is neat to I like a clean sound the best with that and a little bit of gain sometimes is my favorite so far. So many toys but so little time. I'm happy with my purchase

Really fun

By Brandon from Bellingham, WA on April 25, 2014

This is a super fun pedal. I use this a ton of different ways.

The only drawback is that there's no volume knob, and it's set to unity gain when the Blend is at about noon. Which means that if you're to either side of that, you get a boost. At first this was annoying, but I've come to love and accept it.

I haven't tried a ton of delay pedals, but I think if you're looking for something with tons of tweak-ability you might want to look elsewhere. But for me, this just works. It's built really well and offers a lot for the price.

Warm, Analog Joy

By Colby Hoffer from Dallas, Tx on December 9, 2010 Music Background: Active Musician/Recording Engineer

Very inexpensive and reliable pedal. It has a great warm tone and is a hell of a lot better than Boss' digital delays. Analog is the way to go. The Mod function is cool but I'm not a huge fan. I only wish there was a stereo out but at this price I can't complain.

"Analog Sound, But 'Toy' Is Still A Good Name"

By Eric Fisher from West Lafayette, Indiana on April 10, 2018

I recently bought the Memory Toy to complement my EHX Canyon digital delay and looper - I thought a small and simple analog delay would help to fill in the gaps on shorter feedback parts, sound authentically 70's (which it acceptably does) and keep me from screwing with the more touchy (but worthwhile) settings on the Canyon between songs.

Here, the Toy is a good companion pedal, but I wasn't blown away: the half-second delay time is very restrictive for songs with certain tempos and the blend control is a little fussy. The modulation switch doesn't seem to have much effect but I haven't used it much.

That being said, for short delay such as for lead filler, or for slapback, you can't go wrong here, and for the price the 'warmth' of the analog device is very good. (Whoever gives a 'con' on their review for having no tap must have forgotten this is a delay for under $100.) Its sound is good, I would have rated it more highly if it wasn't as limited, but again for the money this is a great little device at a price where nothing else exists.

Great pedal, not recommended for live

By Sweetwater Customer on May 7, 2015 Music Background: Musician/Producer

It's a great sounding pedal, true analogue sound and a huge difference from the sound of a Boss delay or other delay pedals, it just sounds more creamy and more vintage; i love the sound! So why the low grade? I probably just got a bad pedal, or maybe that's the way they are built, either way the one I bought has a tendency of not sounding the same everytime I use it live. It becomes a huge hassle because I use it for a slap delay sound, and before the song starts I have go on the floor and dial in the sound... live... in front of people... it's just not cool. The settings I marked the settings with a marker so and i have to move the knobs anyway until i get the right sound, i mark it again, and guess what happens on the next gig... yup you guessed it, i have to do it again! So yeah it's probably a good acquisition if you plan to use it on the studio... maybe... or if you just want to jam with it, again, it sounds great, but it just doesnt work for playing live. a

Memory toy

By Jay from Honolulu, Hawaii on June 4, 2014 Music Background: Hobbiest and jammer

I like the pedal just fine. I seem to get a better response and sound using it with acoustic electric guitar and ukulele than I do with electric guitar. It seems "soft" to me in that the feedback can be a little mushy.

I was distressed with the effects modulation at first, I couldn't get anything but a seasick chorus out of it. But reading up on it and going to Youtube, I adjusted the internal t-8 pot right below the external power jack and toned it down to acceptable levels.

Built like all EHX pedals, simple, tough, and built for the job. NO fancy paints or pictures, just a workhorse pedal.

Changes amp tone

By Joe on April 18, 2022 Music Background: 18 year players

I've had this pedal for a long time and I like the sound of it but it's not useable for playing with a group. When I click it on it changes the tone I dialed in so much. I lose volume and if I had time I'd like to re-EQ the amp. I've had fun playing with it at home it sounds good if you dial everything in with it on, and I like how easy it is to use, but if you play in a group I don't recommend it.

blah

By Rick C. from Oregon on September 29, 2014 Music Background: garage band hack

the sound - compare to my only other delay experience, at less than half the cost ( rogue) - mostly what I want is good slapback, simple delay. the far cheaper unit is better, but had a noticeable amount of hum using a generic 9 v adaptor. ( no way I'm burning batteries)
this toy - I've spent an hour turning knobs, no better than the far cheaper unit. AND horrid loud hum using the exact same 9 v adaptor. OK with supplied battery, note the instr. sheet says use only a special 9 v. adaptor. IF SO, it should have been included. I didn't see any mention in the listing. booo.
