Arturia Mellotron V Software Instrument Reviews
Most musicians remember the first time they heard it. And now, Arturia's Mellotron V meticulously re-creates one of the very first sample instruments, which wove its tape-playback magic into some of the greatest music ever recorded; gracing hit records by The Beatles, King Crimson, The Moody Blues, Yes, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Genesis, and many others. In the mid-'60s, the Mellotron rocked the world with tape loops of actual orchestral instruments triggered by each note of the instrument's keyboard, adding its own idiosyncratic sonic character in the process. Mellotron V leverages Arturia's cutting-edge sampling and modeling technology to nail the sounds, vibe, and behavior of this iconic instrument in all its glory.

Love the Mellotron V
I have always loved the sound of the Mellotron on recordings by British groups such King Crimson, Yes, Moody Blues, Genesis and Led Zeppelin. So when I saw the Arturia virtual Mellotron for $ I didn't waste anytime buying it. It is tons of fun to play with. I found a practical use for it. I brought it to church choir practice last night and I'm using it to play flute and violin solos. Also, since the choir is very small, I can use one of the vocal patches to back up the singers to make it sound like there's more people singing than there actually are. I would also like to add that Arturia customer service is very good. They responded to my question within 24 hours. A very worthwhile investment when you consider how much a real Mellotron costs.
Great Mellotron.
Great sounding Mellotron emulation.
Installed easily into, and functions effortlessly, in UAD Luna.
Having the ability to tweak the tape warble, mechanical noise, saturation, blend between the three voices, being able to spread them around the keyboard range, etcetera, are a real bonus.
Well done, and highly recommended.

Just like the 60s 70s
Easy to use and a very broad selection of sounds, in fact, more than I would have known the Mellotron had. Playing it I felt like I was in King Crimson or Rick Wakeman doing some pads. Some of the other sounds and effects inspire me to want to create music to use them in some way. Got it for half price during a sale. Probably worth the full price. A fun must have.
Holy guacamole...
Holy guacamole this thing sounds amazing. You'll be tempted to make all of your tracks sound like The Moody Blues with Strawberry Fields flutes and a Radiohead choir. I recognized most of these sounds from classic albums. A huge surprise was the ability to import my own sounds and add the Mellotron tape saturation, tone, etc. It does not sound like a cheesy synthesizer, it sounds like 1967.
Not worth it
I've A/B's the Arturia Mellotron V and M-Tron Pro with the Streetly Tapes to a couple of real Mellotrons. Of course, no digital simulation can match the real thing, but M-Tron Pro is a somewhat close second. The Mellotron V sounds muddy compared to M-Tron Pro. The sample quality is not very good because the source tapes are not very good. The Streetly Tapes for M-Tron Pro were sampled from fresh EMI tape in a pristine, M400-type Mellotron called the Skellotron and were supplied by the company that actually developed the Mellotron. The Mellotrons I used have fresh BASF tape and were also in pristine condition. The only advantage the Mellotron V has is that you can load your own samples, which is actually pointless because the magic of the Mellotron comes from the electronics and not from what's recorded on the tapes. Therefore, if the samples haven't passed through the electronics of a Mellotron, you can't expect to get that vibe.
