TC Electronic Magus Pro High Gain Distortion Pedal Reviews
The Magus Pro high-gain distortion pedal from TC Electronic puts that coveted tone of the infamous LM308 op-amp in your hands — and at your feet — at an amazingly affordable price point. This all-analog circuit pedal features three straight-ahead knobs — Gain, Volume, and Filter — for quick tweaks to your tone. In addition, a Treble Filter control lets you shape that all-important top-end bite. A Fat/Classic/Turbo switch also lets you dial in the gritty, growling mids and lows that will remind you of so many rad hot-rodded '80s amp tones. At Sweetwater, we especially love the Magus Pro's Turbo mode that keeps you firmly oriented to your available headroom with LED clipping diodes on display.

Magus Pro Rocks
You get three Rats in one pedal for the price of a ProCo Rat! Love the Turbo setting!
Holy Rat Trap Batman!
I am a newly devoted Rat fan and I cannot express enough how happy I am with this pedal. It is really unbelievable how many tonal possibilities you have with it considering Rat is known as a high gain pedal. Now add the Magus Pro's mode switch to the equation! Holy Rat Trap Batman! I am especially in love with the Turbo mode but I know I will find many other favorite combinations. Shout Out to my sales engineer Logan, thank you for always taking good care of me.
Great cheap RAT clone
As in title - great ProCo RAT clone, with different modes and a very tiny enclosure with top jacks - which makes it so great at compact pedalboards. Fat and Classic are what can be expected from a usual RAT - a beefy distortion, almost going into Fuzz territory. Turbo works great as a boost for a vintage drive tone - my favorite mode actually.
3-in-1 growl!
I own a ProCo Rat, which is legendary, but it's been collecting dust, mainly to tho popping, hiss, noise, etc. I did my research on the TC Electronic Magus Pro, and I am very happy with my purchase! The big factor for me was that the entire range is usable, whereas the Rat seemed to always be 75% muddy. The bonus is the 3 distinct modes, which have been fun to experiment with. No slam on the Rat, but I do like this "cleaner" alternative. And as always, great follow-up service from Eric and Sweetwater.
Three Flavors of Rat on the Cheap
This replaced my boutique Rat clone with a turbo setting and I'm much happier with the Magus Pro because I now have three settings and this pedal is significantly quieter than the clone. My favorite setting is probably the Fat as it's very full-sounding but all three settings are very usable. I feel that it's a steal for the money.
Best bang-for-buck RAT style pedal
I'm a huge fan of RAT style pedals, and this one sounds absolutely on point but with a much lower noise floor and only minimal popping from the switch when you engage the pedal - it has way less popping and hum than any other Rat style pedal I've tried, with the exception of the 'Hard' setting on the Strymon Sunset. That said, the noise floor is lower on the Magus Pro so it's an absolute winner in my book.
Also, the three modes give it a ton of versatility, and it sounds pretty decent at lower gain settings too (though not as good as the Jam Pedals Rattler, which has magical low gain tones and - overall - probably sounds fractionally better if you were to back-to-back them). And though the Rattler's noise floor is even lower than the Magus Pro, the switch pop is significantly louder and it's 3x the price.
Lastly, the Magus Pro is very small, and built like a tank. At $, it's an absolute steal, and it's making me wonder what other awesomeness TC Electronic is kicking out at this price point. Can't recommend it highly enough.
Completely worth the money... Wow!
I have a Wampler Ratsbane... "Boutique." Yes. Why the heck would I buy the Magus Pro??? To be fair, I've just begun getting into the rat sound. I loved the model off my Digitech RP360 so I knew I needed to buy this circuit for real! I figured I'd go with the Ratsbane because it's so highly regarded. But that was like going into advanced calculus when I really needed to take algebra. I could've gotten the proco rat, but a 3 mode TC version of the rat for the same price was too tempting. Long story short, after comparing it with the Wampler pedal for a good hour, I realized the price of the TC is a ridiculous bargain. When you pay for the boutique pedal, you're paying for an obscene amount of additional gain and an the option to morph the entire circuit on top of having 3 modes. TC Magus Pro was really easy to use right off the bat with 3 very distinct sounds. And the range on the knobs is very user friendly. This pedal actually helped me to figure out how to dial in my Ratsbane. Best buy of this year, for sure!
Hits the ball out the park!
Well. You've done it once again! Amazing pedal t that has an amazing range of tones. Doesn't get muddy when you turn the gain all the way up and sounds great an in overdrive as well. It stacks well with the pedals and is super quiet.. The turbo mode is absolutely amazing. Great job. Hand down beats all others. Beats the major "boutique " rattus norvegicus" versions.
Magic New Awesome Metal Pedal
I vowed to buy a new metal pedal this year. Wanted good value to sound ratio, and man I got it. The Magus is new inspiration to write more drop tuned madness...it is magic for the price.
Versatile pedal, great sound, small footprint
This has been a great addition to my rig. Very versatile tone stack and pedal retains great dynamics at most of the gain range. Lucas Norton was fantastic in keeping me up to date while the pandemic related shipping delays were ongoing and got my order out to me earlier than expected. Thank you Lucas and Sweetwater!
Not sure why you would buy a different rat
If you don't already own a rat pedal you like, this is the start and end of your search for a great rat pedal. Zero noise outside of what you'd expect cranking the gain, all three modes sound great (yes, you get all 3 rat versions in one), and pedal is tiny with top mounted jacks. I am not sure how you could improve on this, love it.
This pedal is amazing !
This pedal sounds amazing and stacks well with other overdrive pedals without excessive noise. The filter knob has way more range than the original version so you can go full gain without the muddies. The turbo setting my favorite. Well done TC. The fans thank you silent switching is also a great feature . Love it so much I'm buying a second one.
The Rat You're (probably) Looking For
The Rat is a classic circuit, earning rave reviews for decades from all over the pedal and guitar industries. I've owned three Rat-type pedals: a Pro Co Rat 2, a Wampler Ratsbane, and the Magus Pro. While the Pro Co may be classic, I was disappointed in the build quality--very noisy with inferior jacks and switch. I sold it fast. The Ratsbane is the Cadillac of Rat pedals, with excellent build and brilliant circuit/tone options, as you would expect from Wampler. It stays on my main board and never fails to impress. But...if you don't need those extra options and don't want to pay $ for a Ratsbane, strongly consider the TC Magus Pro. The Magus is built like a tank, has that great TC silent switch, and is very low noise for a distortion pedal. The gain control goes from sweet, crunchy overdrive at 12:00 to hair-raising, saturated distortion at 3:00. Just turn the gain to your desired level of clipping, set the volume, and turn the filter clockwise to dial in the right amount of bass. Easy. Inexpensive. Awesome. Thanks Sweetwater and Josh Lively for yet another piece of gear to inspire the muse.
Killer Pedal
My Magus Pro just arrived today. Initial thoughts are that it is a great bang for the buck addition. If you are looking for a pedal that will do classic high gain to over the top metal, with a ton of tones, in between, this pedal does the job. With 3 different voices, and a filter dial to highlight or bury the highs, it puts a lot of choices at your fingertips, and takes up little room on a pedalboard. It gets darker as you raise the gain, and it adds sustain as the dial moves clockwise. From fairly sane to sinister, its a fun pedal! If you are on the fence, the Magus Pro is very affordable and Sweetwater's great customer service makes this a safe purchase. I own four other TC Electronics effects, and like all of them. They consistently deliver the goods, and are well liked by players. Having spent far more on other effects that I liked far less, I call this a win!
Nice if you want a few Rat tones
The different tone options make this a really nice Rat type OD. The Filter control wasn't exactly what I wanted, so I was able to easily mod the circuit to get the tone control I wanted. This is basically the exact same as standard Rat circuits, but with a switch to toggle between them.
Nice Rat clone!
This is a nice Rat clone. Great for most forms of rock, punk, indie, alternative, classic rock and hard rock. It stacks well with other fuzz and overdrive pedals and has a lot of volume on tap. The FAT setting is my favorite. I love stacking it with my echobrain delay for loud screaming solos.
