MXL 990 Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone
MXL 990 Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone Reviews
Home recordists searching for a high-quality — yet eminently budget-friendly — condenser microphone will find exactly what they are looking for in the MXL 990. Centered around a gold-sputtered, 6-micron diaphragm, this mic employs all discrete components, which include a battle-tested, German-style transformerless circuit with a FET preamp and bipolar transistors. The 990 makes an excellent cardioid vocal mic, imparting a neutral and balanced sound with enough bottom end for radio-ready voice-overs and enough sizzle to make your tracks pop. It also lends a nice silky sheen to acoustic instruments. The MXL 990 vaunts a durable housing with vintage styling and an attention-grabbing champagne finish. Lest we forget, you also get a custom shockmount, mic stand adapter, and foam-padded case.
microphone is good. shockmount is cheap and the tightening screw doesnt work
this is more about the shockmount than the mic. the screw that tightens it doesnt work, it gets kind of tight and then just spins loose again, making it unusable
Just what we needed
We already use one MXL 990 LDC at our church for our hymn leader, our youth choirs and for special announcements. It gives a nice sound for the price and provides a good frequency range for our various applications. We liked it well enough that we added a second one to use for our Bell Choir. It's got a good pickup field and the good range for picking up treble bells for our Live Stream. Just perfect of our needs at a price the church can afford.
Mic review
It does everything I need and expect
Not As Advertised
I purchased the MXL990 in mid 2022 in the belief that it was a Large Capsule. However when I started using the mic it didn't sound like an LDC. I pulled the screen and discovered that the caplule is 20mm and not 34mm that indicates a large capsule. My hopes for the mic were such that when I bought the mic I bought a mic holder for that sise mic. After discovering that the mic was not a true LDC I sold it for much less than I paid for it. I understand that MXL no longer calls the 990 an LDC. I suppose if yo're not exprcting a true LDC sound than the mic can be a usable tool. Overall it was a big disappointment owing to the aformentioned capsule size. I'd like to see MXL reintroduce the 990 as a true LDC since it is a nice looking unit.
It's decent
I used to have this mic in my old home studio until the day I got it out of the case to use it and it legit fell into pieces. I got it back in the good ol days several years ago and got it and the pencil condenser as a combo deal and I'm almost positive I got the two mics together for the same price as this large diaphragm alone cost now.
Excellent mic
It meet what i was looking for..
pretty good, a little harsh
Title pretty well said it.
Pretty good mic.
A little harsh in hi mids.
Good on vox , acoustic guitar, drum overheads.
Jus gotta tame the hi mids a little with EQ or multiband compression.
Best budget priced mic you can get
This microphone sounds amazing. It requires phantom power, just so you know ahead of time.
Sounds awesome on anything, can take any amount of sound punishment and make it sound great, and is now my go to microphone for most anything to make stuff sound almost as natural as possible. Especially at this price point.
Comes in a carrying case with a shock mount and a regular solid base mount, which is insane at this price.
I've even used this as a live drum overhead with just a kick and a snare mic accompanying it and the live recordings I got with this setup was incredible.
Good Value
The usual reviews of the 990 are about right. It's a good microphone, well built, and the case and accessories are a great bonus. The two mic mounts--shock and hard mount--work well. The mic is a little on the bright side, which is typical of Chinese mics with the Schoeps circuit, apparently. Haven't tried it on acoustic guitar yet, but I suspect it'll sound great when paired with a darker mic. The mic picks up a lot of the room acoustics, so it would not be a good choice for a live rock band situation, but should work well for an acoustic ensemble where a little "bleed" can be pleasing.
Drum Overheads too!!!
Works great as a drum overhead or room recording mic. Takes the high pressure levels and gives excellent clarity. Balanced. I use it mainly as a monitoring and overhead mic for my isolated drum practice room. Takes the cymbals and teally makes them shine. Yes, excellent for vocals and acoustic guitar, etc.. A nice affordable mic!
Great microphone and great company
This was my first time ordering from Sweetwater and it was a great experience. My microphone and the stand I got with it work great for me ad the customer service is top notch.
I feel like they actually care about the customers and fulfill the order with perfect accuracy and really put the sweet in Sweetwater with a little goddie bag included in the order.
MXL Studio Vocal
I just purchased a MXL Studio Vocal microphone from my favorite music store, Sweetwater.
And I have just got through recording a new project with it and it sounds great!
Crisp clean upper frequency, with great low end, but the best part is the warm midrange frequency.
This MXL Studio Vocal microphone is a must for any home or top end recording studio.
Just take a listen to it!
Great vocal mic
This is a wonderful VOX mic. It is clear with no background hum. Picks up the soft whisper and does not distort with high pitched screams of heavy rock sound. This now by go to vocal mic when recording.
Works great
Very good sounding microphone, especially for the price.
Great sounding and great look!
I've become a bit of a microphone nerd lately, and I cannot complain about this one at all! The price I got it for was fantastic and it sounds fantastic! I like how it comes with a carrying case, shock mount and a few other accessories. The one thing that I have to compliment it on is the looks! It looks great when recording something on video and looks extremely professional. I thought I wouldn't like the color, but after seeing it in person, it's great to look at!
Mic is Great! The included parts on the other hand...
Having recently bought this mic it sounds great for the price its being offered, however, with this price the peripherals are expected to take a toll. This mic comes with 2 mounts: a shock mount and a plastic mount. On adjusting just the shock mount the fastening bolt snapped off so be wary if you were looking forward to the included shock mount.
Overall if you need a budget mic, this sounds great just be careful when handling the included accessories.
Great Sounding Mic
The MXL 990 is an excellent mic. It's got a warm quality and a fat sound! Easily, this mic could cost $2500! It sounds great for recording woodwind and brass instruments, percussion, and vocals. Right out of the box, I got to recording with it. I'm quite pleased with my purchase!! This is my time using an MXL mic.
Better than expected
I use this mic to record vocals for my band. The true reproduction of the voice is incredible especially for this price point. To be honest with you I didn't expect much from this mic but after using it now for several months, I couldn't be happier. I plan on buying a second one sometime soon. Highly recommend, especially if you are on a budget.
Wow Great Mic
This mic is a diamond in The ruff it's sounds great for voiceover work and home recording as well I have expensive mics and it holds up great . Needs a pop filter to limit the sibilants . I use this mic for the work I do at the studios at a radio station for people who need demo for voiceover work .
Great mic, good price
I have used my MXL 990 for a couple of years, mostly for recording. I have three now. The sound quality is great and the price can't be beat for this quality condenser mic. Be aware that you have to provide phantom power a condenser mic like this. You won't be disappointed.
Perfect!!!
This microphone its just perfect for home studios. Nice and clear and for the money its a no brainer!
Good workhorse
Bought one like 3 years ago.
Great on outside kick.
Great on vocals.
Great on acoustic guitar.
Well i just bought another one.
Really good as overheads for drums.
Has a small boost around 4-5k from what I can hear.
I just dip that down a little , use a De-esser.
Fantastic.
This mic has a lot of uses. I bet it would be great on horns (brass , woowinds , etc) as well.
Singer/ songwriter producer.
Threw the years I've recorded in big time huge commercial studios. Was going in one studio one day and Genesis was coming out. So needless to say they had some pretty high end pricey microphones. And i say so what ? Take a 3, 000 dollar mic plug it in some cheap karaoke machine with someone that is inexperienced and it will sound like the the price of a paper weight. Its the combination of pre amp, compression , EQ and knowing how to sing in it.. The MXL990 is more than good enough . I use it with a nice tube pre and a dbx compressor any difference between the MXL and any " high end " mic are so small most will never guess.
Still Clear after 20 Years
I've had this microphone for almost 20 years. I am not an expert; I just have a small home recording setup. That said, it fit the budget and allows me to record very clear vocals. It has a pretty wide field and can pickup both vocals and a guitar simultaneously, so it isn't great for a live recording with multiple people in the same room.
MXL - Best Budget Mics
Amazing Microphone. I own the 990 and the MXL 770 was my first Mic. Now I own Some higher end mics for my home studio but these are killer for the price. Super Clear Vocals. Probably the
Best Mic Under $100 with the MXL 770 not far behind.
