Great Looper in a Small Package

By Sweetwater Customer from PA

This is a small but very versatile looper. Plenty of built in rhythms, ability to undo/redo overdubs. Up to 100 loops can be saved (total recording time 13 hours). Versitile input/output configurations along with the ability to add effects to the playback. Menu screens are easy to understand, and most functions can be easily configured on the fly via the setting knobs below the main screen. I especially like the way the screen backlight changes to indicate the mode the pedal is in. Be sure to go to Zoom's website and download the operating manual for this pedal - it has detailed information on setup options, looper operation, and helpful hints to get the most out of this pedal.

Awesome Looper

By Sweetwater Customer

I've had this for a few weeks now and I really like it.

It has 32-bit audio so the loops sound great, it has way more recording time and memory banks than I will ever need, and it has dedicated buttons for stop/clear, drums, undo, and fx, which is way better than the RC5 with its single button. It's great for live use because you can clear a loop silently.

You can even record a loop in "free time", and it will sync the drums to it based on the duration of the loop, which is a nice feature for practice, but sometimes the drums play double-time because it's just looking at the total duration of the loop, not your strumming pattern. You can also set the drums to be operated independently or to start and/or stop with the loop, which is a great feature. The drums sound good through my studio monitors.

The only downside to the small footprint of the pedal is that the buttons are small and clumped together, so you need some good foot dexterity to use them properly. I think if you used and RC-5 with a separate footswitch like the boss FS-7, that would get you similar functionality while being easier to operate, but that's significantly more expensive and involves a much larger footprint.

Overall, this is a fantastic looper and I'm really happy I bought it.

Almost great.

By Aaron from Gig Harbor, WA

This thing has features that are unheard of in this price range. The effects are fun and somewhat useful for my purposes. 90min loop time and 13hr memory made this a no-brainer for me. I too have noticed some glitchiness. Every once in a while, when recording a long loop, usually over 15min, occasionally it will just stop recording. The waveform will stop moving yet the screen stays red. A couple of times the audio has just cut out when I run a loop in reverse. These are not super common occurences but they have happened more than once. Both glitches are remedied by yanking the power cable and plugging it back in. I'm of the mind that I probably need to do a firmware update and see if it corrects these issues. The looper seems sensitive to power supplies as well. Using a Boss PSA standard 9v center neg wallwart power supply at first was when I noticed the malfunctions. It could be coincidence. The standard boss power supplies are very reliable otherwise so I don't want to say it was the cause. I also tried an extremely cheap 9v supply that has given other pedals trouble. My results were similar. Isolated voodoo lab power or an EHX branded 9v wall wart seem to have reduced the errors, but correlation does not equal causation. Despite the occasional glitches, I'm happy. A firmware update will probably straighten things out and if not, Sweetwater has my back for 2 years if I need to exchange it. This is the most feature rich looper I've ever seen. I know that more advanced digital loop stations certainly exist, but not at this price in a single pedal footprint . The button/knob combo controls are tiny and can be tough to manipulate on the fly but once you get a handle on entering and exiting menus, it gets easier. I'm using this for ambient, noise and industrial styles of music so I can't speak to using it with guitars but it's a heck of a good impromptu sampler. I have a cable that runs from my phone to a 1/4" instrument jack. I find and screen-record bits of movies, sound fx, interview dialogue etc online. I can then play and record those sounds directly into a memory slot on the MS-90. The fun part is using the onboard fx to reverse a loop, make it stutter with the hold function, or make sounds slow to a crawl. The onboard beats are surprisingly cool. There's a good bit of variety and the bpm has a wide range. To my knowledge you can't record the rhythms into your loop. The beats are sort of a glorified metronome. Some of them don't sound terrible but I don't see many people buying this specifically for the percussion. All in all for the price it's a good product. It'd be great if it shipped without the need for updates

Works but glitches out at startup

By P. A. from California

After a week of regular use, it freezes, makes a loud digital clip tone, and resumes to normal on start up almost every time. Maybe firmware issue it being in first version? Hope Zoom fixes problem otherwise may need to return and get something more stable.

Everything I want in a looper.

By Doctor D. from Michigan
Music Background: 13 years (!) as a home player.

I switched from my old Zoom G5 to a Helix a few years back, and the only thing I've missed is having a looper synced to rhythm. This is exactly what I've been hoping someone would come out with, and it's even better than I hoped. The sound quality is great, and the feature set is terrific. My only real gripe is that there's no option to dial in recording time by bars rather than quarter-notes, and that's just nitpicking (and will hopefully be fixed in a firmware update). This is just a great, great looper for an absurdly low price.

Insanely good

By Michael H. from SUCCASUNNA, NJ

There is nothing like this for this cheap on the market. It does everything you need from a looper. Audio quality is excellent. Easy to use and no double tapping. Loops line up with the beat. Not overcomplicated. Build quality is good. The only tricky thing is that the bottom isn't really made for Velcro and It'll take some intuitiveness to get it to stick without taking the rubber feet off.
