Using these for a couple yeas now...
I have 2 - Mesa 2x12 Black Shadow's open back cabs running off my stereo Synergy power amp rig. They range just about anything I throw at them. Powerful speakers, plenty of low end ability and I find the high end once tweaked in to be as good as anything gets. Great cabs and versatile. Don't worry about Metal tones just because they are open back, the Black Shadows are killer and better speakers than the Vintage 30s and 70/80 Celestions by a long shot.
My sound
Paired with my Mark V 90w head this cab screams! The Black Shadow MC-90 Celestions are clear, and powerful. My kit is Mark V on this 2x12 cab and another 1x12 w/Vintage 30 Mesa cab on a cab stand. The sound conjures emotion.
Clear and powerful
Have an early 4 x 12 Mesa cab, definitely my best cab, but also too heavy to cart around any more. So purchased this Boogie 2 x 12(Black Shadow Celestion G12 80 speakers) with some high expectations. Without changing any amp settings, I found the new cab to be loud, very clear note separation, a fairly flat speaker EQ but definitely favoring to the high end (has a lot of bite). And with the flat bass response, this makes the high end a bit challenging to tame. It does deliver some very sweet clean tones, especially with humbuckers, kind of levels out their tubby low end. However with a Tele bridge, it takes a lot of twisting on the guitar V AND T to get the harshness back under control. Also did not work well with the amps drive channel, that was a surprise. I hope after some break in and some specific amp EQ adjustments this will over come these issues. It is crazy well made, compact (but heavy). At $ it was also not cheap. You kind of know fairly quickly when something is going to work for you, or if its going to give you a struggle. I like Mesa, but not sure about this one yet.
