Studio Talkback Mic

By Matt on March 15, 2024

I ordered this thinking it had to be an upgrade from my current studio talkback gooseneck microphone base made by Samson (model number CMB1). The build quality and components used in the Sennheiser base are definitely premium and in my opinion, this looks much better than my Samson CMB1. The XLR connectors and the push button on/off indicator are far superior as well. So why a 2.5 star rating? My biggest complaints are with a couple of key areas that are deal breakers for me, but might not be for you.

First, I use this in push to talk mode (PTT) and the biggest complaint is that signal still passes through this when you disengage the talk button. This is not a true kill switch on the circuit, but just a series of resistors it seems. The audio that passes through when not engaged is obviously much quieter, and almost low pass filtered...but still very present to me, my clients and voice over talent that we direct. The Samson CMB1, however, is far superior in this regard as it eliminates 99% of the signal with the design of the board inside their unit. The talk button and on/off indicator light on the Samson CMB1 is average in appearance, but I do appreciate that it doesn't take nearly as hard of a button press to activate compared to the Sennheiser unit.

That brings me to my second complaint and that is the audible click of the button press and release of the mechanical switch in the Sennheiser vs the totally silent on/off of the Samson CMB1, which uses a pressure sensing film resistor type of switch.

I have also tried the gooseneck PTT mic base from Audio Technica and was disappointed in that as well. It was physically just as nice as the Sennheiser, with the look and components...but you have to press uncomfortably hard to activate the pressure sensing switch in the AT unit.

Thankfully I ordered this Sennheiser mic base from a site that allows returns of this item because it didn't meet my expectations at all. I will be purchasing another Samson CMB1 since it still out performs the others. The only other contender for me would be the Shure MX412D/C, but since I already have a gooseneck mic that I like, I only need the base.
