Grace Design m900 - Desktop DAC Headphone Amplifier Reviews

2-ch Headphone Amplifier with Stereo Unbalanced Analog Outputs, Digital Input via USB, TOSlink, and S/PDIF Coax, and Support for 44.1kHz-384kHz PCM and 64X-256X DSD Audio - Mac/PC

Grace Design's m900 takes the stunning detail and flawless imaging of their flagship m920 headphone amplifier and packs it into a portable, bus-powered unit. But just because the m900 is portable, doesn't mean it's lacking. Experience jitter-free computer audio playback, with support for up to 32-bit/384kHz PCM and 256x DSD. Dual zero-ohm output impedance headphone outputs deliver spacious and transparent performance, while stereo unbalanced analog outputs make connecting to your stereo monitor system easy. Either way, four different DAC filter settings provide personalized playback. At Sweetwater, we appreciate the m900's simple setup menu and easy-to-read 7-segment LED display, and its large rotary encoder makes volume control and menu navigation a breeze.

Great headphone amp

By Sweetwater Customer on April 21, 2020

Small footprint with professional audio quality and features!

Brings my music to another level!

By Eddie from NC on November 2, 2019

Purchased this unit for it's ability to decode DSD files. If you have never listened to a DSD file you don't know what you are missing. Grace design did a top notch job with this DAC. Solid construction, great piece of hardware. Brings my music to life.

Incredible Clarity

Don't usually write reviews, have two dacs this and the adi-2 pro fs. Mostly using Senneheiser HD600s with a blue dragon cable. The headphone amplifier on this unit is next level for this price, 0.08 ohms output impedance........cmon. Dimensionality, channel separation, very stable clocking...this thing is incredible as a monitor controller or for playback. highly recommended.

Elegant and sublime

By Jamie from Michigan on September 17, 2018 Music Background: Professional classical musican who also does on-location recordings.

This DAC is very neutral and incredibly clean but never sterile or 'laboratory' sounding. Far from it. It's a musical piece of gear and a pleasure to listen to. It has an almost silky character and is very non-fatiguing to the ear.

When I first listened to it, the neutral quality of it took me aback some because I realized the admittedly less than stellar DAC I was using emphasized the low mids and was making my recordings sound more rich or full than they actually were. That's really good info to have. The m900 is going to be really helpful for on-location recordings, no doubt.

It's an honest sounding DAC but not in a brutal sort of way. Everything it does is elegant and sublime.

World Class

By Sweetwater Customer from Washington D.C. on November 2, 2017 Music Background: Mixing Engineer

I have tried dozens of high end dacs and headphone amps for mixing and audiophile listening, and this one is top 5 for sure, with exceptional features.

If you need a portable mixing rig for flights, or even just an insanely clear headphone amp for your computer...this thing beats out a majority of what's on this site.

The prototype turned into a real product!

By Sweetwater Customer on October 6, 2017

I got an early version of this, back through Massdrop; and it is the m9xx model. That was successful as a first couple runs so it turned into this production model I think.

It is superb. I have tried it with a number of headphones, and especially love it with my Beyerdynamic DT880 -- clear, deep, articulate, and really dimensional.

I also very much like the Apogee Groove, this is a notch above - but a different animal.

You will not be disappointed.

Great DAC

By Gary Flanigan from Durham NC on June 8, 2019 Music Background: Singer, Songwriter, Guitarist

I bought this to use in my studio with my Dynaudio BM6As and my Avantones. As it happens, I relocated and have yet to get my studio reassembled. So they are doing duty now with a pair of Genelec 8010s as my computer speaker system. Wow! This setup is clearly overkill, but I love it. As I listen to a lot of music at my computer, it isn't so crazy. And this fits on the desk nicely, where a rack mount (e.g. Apogee) wouldn't. I am surely spoiled now. :)

Sweet & Graceful sound

By Fastguitars from Emerald Coast on October 23, 2018 Music Background: Professional Musician

As a professional musician i need pro tools.
Typically i use Apogee converters but was looking for yet another headphone amp-dac as im always looking for the ultimate Headphone -Dac -Amp experience which allows me both listening pleasure and accurate mastering inside my Daw.
This Grace M900 provides both with easy and polish.
It offers a highly analytical tho smooth and refined listening experience, that is worth 2x its asking price.
I use mine with Audeze LCD-X & Sine Headphones, as well as Hifi Man HE 500s, and this Hi end product make them sound very very good, indeed.
One other thing i noted is that the Volume control is the very best ive ever used in an amp dac (and ive used many), in that it offers such wonderfully small steps in volume increase which is just such a help and luxury.
The last thing i can tell you is that this product plays better with your Mac then Apogee devices, and they work very well with a Mac.
The M900 by Grace, is an affordable professional product with no flaws and outstanding performance.

Sound quality is sub par

By Chris Gatton from Worthington, OH on February 1, 2024

This just didn't sound great to me. I ended up going with the Chord Electronics Hugo2.

Sounds great but has some flaws

By Katia Dotto from Orinda, CA on November 19, 2018

The m900 sounds great. Easy set, slick look and very rugged construction.

The reason I am giving it 2 stars is because it should have a separate volume for the headphones. The difference between my average mixing gain on my speakers are barely audible in my headphones.

I miss a mono option as well.

Overall, it's nice, but I would get something different.
