Telefunken M82 Cardioid Dynamic Kick Drum Microphone
Telefunken M82 Cardioid Dynamic Kick Drum Microphone Reviews
The M82 dynamic microphone expands Telefunken's lineup with a purpose-built kick drum mic any live or studio engineer can appreciate. Outfitted with an oversized 1.37" moving-coil diaphragm, the M82 provides you with superb low-frequency response. But, although Telefunken designed it for kick drums, this fat and punchy mic is also ideal for bass cabinets, voiceover work, and many other applications. On top of that, there's a switchable Kick EQ filter and a separate switchable High Boost function onboard the Telefunken M82, giving you four distinct sounds in one microphone.
Excellent Vocal Microphone!
With the treble boost switch engaged, my baritone voice is full and well balanced from low end, mids, to high end. Well controlled plosives and handling noise. I'd buy again.
Very solid kick mic!
At first, I wasn't sure if this sounded better than my previous go-to on kick. But after much more use, I can say with confidence that I really dig this mic. The low-mid notch and treble switches are extremely useful, but what I like on this mic is the overall response is fairly smooth, and it can capture mids very nicely opening it up to wider applications than just kick. It sounds good for modern as well as more vintage kick tones. It's a little like a beefier RE20 with no switches in, just a hair off the top end. With the switches it starts to approach modern scooped/hyped tones. I find the versatility to be worth it. Hell it even sounds good as a podcast vocal mic. Can easily recommend it
Love this mic!
While I really don't like the "pre scooped" vibe of many kick mics, the tone shaping switches on the M82 are useful, musical, and right on the money. This mic sounds great. It's built like a German tank, and is really useful on many other applications. Great on kick, floor tom, bass, voiceover. And when I say great, I mean it outshines many of my go to mics I've been reaching for throughout a lot of years. There are still many sources I've yet to try it on, but I'm a happy convert!
Effortless and Amazing
Finally got to use this last week, I plugged it in positioned it in the hole of the kick drum and the sound was just amazing... I couldn't believe it was that great with no adjustment. Money well spent.
What's Better Than A Telefunken M82? Two Telefunken M82s!
Let the records show that I'm a diehard Audio-Technica ATM25 microphone fan for bass drums. I want to hear the tone of the shell in my mix. I purchased a Telefunken M82 from Sweetwater which I have already posted a review here. It's not the same as an ATM25, it's different. But it's the only other mic that has grown on me for certain situations when I want a bit more thud rather than a rounder tone. I liked my first M82 so much that I had to have a second one for my other bass drums and gong drum. Still not convinced? Here's a psychic prediction: I don't think this will be my last M82.
Best Kick Mic ever....
This is my favorite kick mic (studio) of all time. You can get whatever you want from it with proximity, and the filter and boost switches. I'm using it with a Warm Audio 412 mic pre. Just amazing. For reasonable money. Great.
Making it easy!!!!!
I was having problems getting a good kick drum sound.......I put one of these babies in the drum, and just about anything on the outside,In my case its a D6,,,,, problem solved for sure...
If you’re looking at it just get it!
I was looking for another large diaphragm dynamic. I normally use an RE-20 and sometimes add an EW Kickpad in-line.
The M82 immediately gave me the weight I was looking for. Engaging the eq switches helped fine tune the attack and remove "mud". Given the variety of kick drums a studio will encounter, the M82 seems to me a great choice for your mic locker.
Boom for your buck
Great Kick Drum Mic
I bought this kick drum mic to go along with a paid of Telefunken M60 FET small condenser mics for primarily drum recording. With just a bit of parallel bus compression, this kick drum mic sat nicely right in the mix for a latin jazz/samba piece I recently recorded and mixed. The filter switches are nice to have. I had no phasing issues with the overhead mics and the room mic. I like Telefunken dynamic mics. Their M80 is a great vocal mic and also useful on a snare drum or guitar cabinet. Impedence levels are different than Shure mics. They require more gain, but they have an EQ curve and warmth I find much more agreeable than the industry standard bearer. Matched with a good preamp, you can't go wrong with this mic in a drum recording.
Best kick mic I've used
I've used many kick microphones over the years. All have their strengths and weaknesses, and are applicable to certain situations. The M82 is the first kick mic I've owned that works well in any situation.
Recording an 18" jazz kick with a closed front head? Leave both switches flat.
Want a gentle ballad type kick that still works in a rock mix? Scoop the mids.
Going for a modern rock sound? Scoop the mids and boost the highs.
I haven't used the mic yet for anything but kick - I'm sure it excels as a voice over mic, or a bass cab also.
Great Bass Mic
Just used this mic for the first time last weekend. The result was a very solid response. The full spectrum of lows along with all the resonance I expect from a bass drum mic really came through for the progressive style rock I play. The only downside is the lack of a hard case, but a nice mic that comes with a solid mount, leather case and a quality cord. For the money this is the best bass mic I've found that can also be used on guitar cabs.
