I seriously wish I could remix everything I have ever done in my 30+ year career on these monitors. They are truly revolutionary.

By Joe Egan from VT on March 28, 2021

I relied on (and still really like) Dynaudio BM15as for the past two decades. I had added a pair of their matching BX30 subs along the way in order to hear more true bottom end. When I heard the M2s at an AES show it was an epiphany. My control room was designed by a multi TEC award winner and I never had a problem getting mixes to translate beofre, but I definitely had to work around a low mid/ upper bass wonkiness I heard in my old monitors. I had no idea what a truly revealing pair of speakers would mean for both decision making and my confidence. Why these speakers haven't taken over the monitor market is beyond me. I auditioned pretty much everything in the range. They all sounded great. A couple even came somewhat close. But nothing made me rethink the decision. I already owned a JBL Intonato 24 I used for all the monitors in my control room, both stereo and surround and subs for routing, timing and room EQ. The fact that it has the crossover and tuning presets for the M2s meant I didn't need the DSP found in the Crown iTech HD amps usually sold with the M2s. I got equivalently powered Crown DCI amps with similar power instead and could not be happier. I actually added a third M2 for a center channel and recently got a SUB18 for a much better LFE match than the old Dynaudio BX30s. Both the SUB18 and Intonato deserve their own reviews, but suffice it to say that the integration and sound of all the components is seamless and extraordinarily good. I also just picked up a used pair of JBL 708ps as primary surrounds (an absolutely astounding small monitor in its own right) and when work and funds justify it I'll add another pair of 708p as rear surrounds and some 705 or 705p for Atmos (hopefully!).

Anyone looking for stunningly dynamic, incredibly detailed and accurate main studio monitors would be doing themselves a great disservice if they didn't listen to the M2s first. Much of the total cost is caused by the iTech HD amps, but between certain BSS Soundweb London processors and the Intonato 24, other much more affordable, equally powerful solutions with approved DSP do exist. I am surprised JBL doesn't go out of their way to explain those options.
