Outstanding! Just One Major (Easily Fixable) Flaw
I'm in love with Zoom's line of 32-bit recorders. The ability to record without worrying about gain is just amazing. Go anywhere, record anything, and you can be safe knowing the slightest whisper is still picked up, and the loudest scream is still in range. You still have to practice good placement, room treatment, etc. But not worrying about gain leaves you with one fewer critical error you could potentially make.
Not only that, but the mic is actually excellent. In mono mode it sounds a lot like a Shure SM58, and the ability to go stereo is just icing on the cake. The MAJOR FLAW to which I refer is the garbage fabric cover included with the M2 and M4 recorders (I own both). They significantly alter the beautiful sound of the onboard mic, reducing high frequences, and almost destroying low frequencies completely. It's awful. Fortunately, most generic "handheld mic foam cover" products will fit this just fine. I ordered a number of different options on Amazon to test (didn't find any here on Sweetwater); I think the ones from a brand called Mudder did the trick just fine. You get to keep the very nice sound of the onboard mic, and it actually does much BETTER than the garbage fabric cover and reducing wind and plosive noises. If you get the M4, you'll have to get a wider cover; I ordered a foam cover meant to fit the Zoom H1n, and it fit the M4 perfectly, albiet with a bit of stretching to get it all the way on.
In any event, these are fantastic mics, lovely handling and ergonomics, even better sound, and very convenient for any kind of recording. I do wish they'd make a metal-bodied version to really make it a professional long-life product. The plastic seems like it might not take a drop too well, or too often. But for the price, this is an outstanding bit of kit.
