The 4-channel, 32-step Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms Percussion Sequencer packs a ton of utility into a 24hp module. For starters, calling this Eurorack module a percussion sequencer doesn't really do it justice. Rather than generate percussion sounds or send out gate signal to percussion modules, the Lifeforms Percussion Sequencer features four sequencer-triggered percussion envelopes, which turn any audio into percussion sounds. You can program the sequencer via traditional step sequencing or real-time performance, and six powerful pattern effects let you add an improvised feel to your beats.

Possibly the coolest thing about the Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms Percussion Sequencer is the way it lets you turn any sound source into a percussion sound. There are four high-quality VCAs onboard, each with its own percussion-style envelope. The envelopes feature an extremely sharp attack and adjustable decay, allowing you to shape even basic waveforms into powerful rhythmical elements. There are individual channel outputs, but there are also individual envelope outputs - and if you drop the decay low enough, they'll consistently trigger any gate input, allowing you to control external modules with your Lifeforms Percussion Sequencer.

Sixteen small yet surprisingly comfortable buttons let you easily program up to 32 steps. Lay down beats via traditional step programming or real-time performance, to create patterns ranging from one to 32 steps. Once you've locked down your beat, you can save it in one of 32 slots for instant recall, and you can easily copy and paste your patterns to create variations. And when it comes to syncing with other modules, the Lifeforms Percussion Sequencer is perfectly happy following another clock or providing the pace you set via the tap tempo control.

Here's where Sweetwater synth nuts start freaking out about the Lifeforms Percussion Sequencer: the adjustable pattern effects. You can apply one of six effects to each channel, plus a master effect to the entire sequence. Shift creates small stutters, whereas Glitch uses a cascading algorithm to create clock-synced madness, and Density lets you multiply the timing and number of triggers. Morph continuously varies the entire pattern by adding and dropping triggers in an evolving stream, whereas Add/Drop only temporarily alters the pattern. Finally, there's a classic Swing effect. What's more, you can control the intensity of each effect, and when you put them all together, you won't believe the kind of intricacy you can achieve.
