Superb feel
Being completely new to lap steel - and for that matter completely new to guitars of any kind - I experimented. I have a 54 Fender Champion student lap steel - that had been in storage since the mid 70s, and it came with a bakelite tone bar.
Next experiment was with an Ernie Ball stainless steel bullet-medium weight, also from Sweetwater.
The Lap Dawg came today - after an adventurous 2 and a half week cross-country trip with FedEx. My pandemic frustration is really just me being jealous that my Lap Dawg got to travel and I didn't.
But I can't take it out of my hand, and I've been playing beginner licks and riffs with it since it arrived 4 hours ago.
I like all 3 - but the Lap Dawg is clearly the most versatile. The chrome-over-brass makes it sing brighter than the other materials.
Picture of all three - the Ernie Ball on the left, just for scale. It's a billy club in disguise.
Dunlop Lapdog
Just got in the mail, love it, new to lap style playing, so easy to hit the single strings, have been using a sheerhorn for me at my level the lapdog is better hands down
Most popular tone bar
I own a couple of these now, perfect weight, length and height, even for my small to medium sized hands.
This is one BAD DAWG!!!!
First off I just got into playing lap steel guitar. I have been playing slide guitar for years. I got the Peavey powerslide and got this tone bar for it. Wow this is a great slide! It has great sustain and warmth yet it has cut. The chromed brass offers brightness but yet it"s not brittle. It"s very very very good! I love it and the weight is awesome. The weight adds to the sustain and the overall feel of the slide. The surface is smooth and polished to perfection. I highly recommend this slide for steel players. The only draw back and it"s not a big deal is it"s a little short when doing bar slants across some strings but they make the long dawg for that! Great slide!
Amazing
Any new Lap Steel players should go straight to this slide.
Amazingly accurate and expressive.
Tone Bar
Sound Quality is great and it has Heft to it so you know you have it in your hand
Excellent Tone and Sustain!!
I've been using home-made slides for some time now and though they do work, they don't even come close to producing the super tone and sustain that the Dunlop Lap Dawg Tonebar does. Having an average size hand, as I do, the Lap Dawg is a perfect fit. The weight and balance of this slide are great for my multi-genre style of playing. Great job Dunlop - Keep up the good work!
Great tonebar
Beginner dobro player this is my first tonebar I've used other than a glass slide that I already had. I definitely prefer this over the slide. Its comfortable, easy to use and sounds great!
It is very good
There is nothing wrong with this tonebar. My hand is large and so I get tired after an hour of playing. I am getting use to it. It is certainly a very good tonebar.
