Dynaudio LYD 48 3-way Powered Studio Monitor (Left Side) - Black Reviews

180W 3-way Studio Reference Monitor with 8" Woofer, 4" Midrange, and 1" Tweeter (each) - Left, Black

The Dynaudio LYD 48 will take your monitoring accuracy — and your mixes — to a higher level of professionalism. As the new flagship of the LYD range, the LYD 48 builds upon the strengths of its 2-way stablemates, and as a 3-way tri-amplified studio monitor, it achieves superior across-the-board performance. In a 2-way design, the woofer has to work very hard to reproduce the low frequencies as well as a portion of the midrange. Another inherent disadvantage is that the crossover to the tweeter is taking place within that all-important midrange — where the vocal tracks are most vibrant, where your guitars have girth and body, and generally where mixes either shine or fall flat. Having a dedicated midrange driver (and amp) delivers sweeping benefits, including solid bass extension, improved midrange purity, lower distortion, higher SPL capability, and overall accuracy. Suitable for both nearfield and midfield applications, the value-packed Dynaudio LYD 48 will help you make better recordings.

LYD48's are a significant upgrade from my previous monitors.

By Michael F. from Randolph, NJ
Music Background: Engineer, Producer, Artist

My new LYD48's are a significant upgrade to my previous monitors and have given me superb pre-production and mixing capabilities. These monitors reproduce precise audible audio information that has dramatically increased my workflow.
I have completed 6 projects with great praise from the artists for the well balanced and accurate detail of their work.
It's all about the artist and the listener... Great product Dynaudio!

Honest sound!

By Golu D. from West coast
Music Background: Full time plus musician

After returning a pair of ribbon speakers that produced overly sharp sound, I opted for a 3-way monitor instead. These monitors are a testament to honest sound reproduction, devoid of any embellishments or coloration. They excel in delivering clear and well-defined bass, mid, and high frequencies, which has significantly improved my mixing workflow, particularly in the control and clarity of the mid-range. Unlike the clouded mid-range produced by the ribbon monitors, these monitors offer a transparent and accurate representation of sound.

Furthermore, these monitors allow me to decrease the volume while still maintaining a clear understanding of the audio being mixed. In contrast, the ribbon speakers, with their exaggerated highs and lackluster mid-range, prioritize booming bass over accurate sound reproduction. For those seeking authenticity and true representation of their audio, these monitors undoubtedly outshine the competition.

To validate my experience, I conducted a comparison test by playing the same mix on both the ribbon speakers and these monitors in my 5.1 home audio room. The outcome was indisputable – the Dynaudio monitors emerged as the clear victor, solidifying their superiority in delivering true-to-life sound.

Unbelievable!

By Russell from Ottawa ON
Music Background: Songwriter, Producer, Engineer

I rarely write reviews unless a piece of gear really blows me out of the water. I'm coming from Shape 65's and really can't believe the difference...especially considering they're in a very similar price range. Everything is so much more open, I can hear the separation across the stereo field mic better now, bass extension is much better...minor adjustments in comp, eq and effects are so much more noticeable, to make better mix decisions. I really did not think I would notice this amount of difference. I found the Focal's to be harsh in the upper mids and the Dyn's are much smoother. I have yet to put a full day in on them, but I imagine my ears will not get fatigued as quickly from now on. I can't compare to any other 3-ways or higher end speakers but compared to HS8's, Focal Alpha's and Shape 65's, these offer a night and day difference. Really looking forward to spending some significant time on them...and I imagine they'll get even better after the recommended break in period!

These monitors are a dream come true

By Greg S. from Tennessee

The argument for 3-ways was very convincing and I'm so glad I went with Dynaudio. My rep, Ryan, recommended them, and after reading up on them I was convinced that 3-ways would be better for mixing. I know very successful engineers have mixed on much less, but not me. My mixes on these require very little tweaking, if any, when checked in other platforms. The mids are so accurate with no confusion from a mid-crossover. Finally finally finally I can mix what I hear accurately and know that's what it actually is. I couldn't be more pleased.

Beyond Expectations

By Chris from Austin Tx

I had been trying to get my hands on some Adams for a LONG time but the Pandemic made it near impossible. I put in an order for some but they were on persistent back order. During that time I was looking at everything remotely close in price range, even far above my budget. I kept coming across all these reviews lauding the Dynaudios. From pros to audiophiles, extremely high praise. I was mostly interested in what mix engineers were saying. The true 3 way makes a difference, etc. Nothing bad ever, outside of the occasional remark that they wont get super loud for client wow factor. I don't have a huge room so not a big problem for me. My existing JBLS on their last legs and me struggling with them, could not wait any longer and went for these.

All of the reviews are spot on. These things are impressive. Accurate, extremely detailed without being harsh or fatiguing. If there is something wrong in your mix you will hear it. If there is something wrong with the recording it will stand out. Problem areas leap out and you have no choice but to fix them or they WILL become annoying and grating. I was a little worried because to begin with during break in they felt maybe too crispy and bright. They calmed down after about 18-24 hours of break in. I feel like I'm able to hear deep into mixes now. SO much easier to dial mixes in. Everything is so obvious, transparent and floating out there in front of me. I can hear even the smallest changes with EQ and compressor. Much easier to hear the flavor from a tiny amount of reverb or parallel compression. Placing instruments and separating them is absolutely faster now. I don't have to work so hard to "hear". Even better is that everything translates.

Need to get a little distance on them for the best imaging. While I suppose you could get right up on them they seem to open up between 3 and 4 feet. Oh and don't bother trying to listen to any of the average everyday streaming services. I was checking out some of my playlists on a few streaming services. Oof. These speakers are not flattering to poorly mastered songs or services with low bitrate and compression artifacts.

These are excellent tools. I am very happy with this purchase. Honestly IM glad I didn't hear the cores before buying these because my wallet would probably be a lot lighter. I am seriously considering purchasing the sub so I have a matched system.

They have a lot going for them, but the hiss they produce is substantial.

By Sweetwater Customer

Basically the good reported about these speakers is true. Also I've found that in my setup where they are on a desk surface and relatively close to the wall, the DSP settings really help to overcome some of the challenges of this setup.

The problem is that even with the sensitivity down at -6db and NOTHING connected at all, they produce a lot of white noise. Enough that it is clearly audible within their recommended listening distance of 1.5-2.5 meters.

It is not negligible and is far in excess of a wide variety of other speaker systems I've had in the same location.

Like way more. Lots more. Google it; I'm not the only one talking about it.

Hey Dynaudio - you need to either add a volume knob or a much more dramatic sensitivity cut (like -12db).

Its tough as they are genuinely good monitors. If hiss doesn't bother you, dive right in. If hiss bothers you, get something else.

Blown away

By John b. from california
Music Background: home musician

So this is the first time in my life I ever spent this much money on monitors. Im a home studio, personal projects artist. Im coming from Yamaha HS7's and I've been using those for about 3 years now. I saw all the amazing reviews on the LYD48 and I thought "either this is the greatest marketing scheme ever, or a lot of people are really loving these." Ive been really unhappy lately with my mixes, but muscled my way through thinking that blaming my monitors is an excuse. Still there was always something missing. So I talked to Andrew P about them, and I asked "If these sound terrible can I send them back" and he's like "Yep! not a problem" so I took the dive and ordered them.. ok, enough with the backstory.

Hooked them up today and this smile slowly grew bigger and bigger. Such a sweet, wide, accessible, dimensional stage. its literally like going from 2D to 3D, and Im not easily impressed. Its like someone cleaned the wax out of my ears. what a breathe of fresh air !! Opened up some of my mixes and I could instantly hear problems that I didn't know existed. Hearing mix issues is so obvious now. I could go on and on, but if you're like me and can JUST barely afford these (thank God for the monthly payment plans) then DO NOT hesitate. You wont look back!! its actually a pleasurable experience listening to these things, MAN!! SO HAPPY!!!

Greatest Studio Monitors!

By Alejandro from Medellin, Colombia
Music Background: Mixing Engineer

I work in a small and well treated room and this is a MAJOR upgrade in all categories for me. I feel the kick is solid and the bass is thick but not exaggerated like with most monitors. The mids and highs are also incredibily detailed. The Lyd48 adapts perfectly to my room and I find myself listening at much lower volumes than before instead of turning it up for "hype." I'm not sure what it is but these monitors make the imaging feel incredibly precise! I literally feel as if everything in mono (vocals, bass, kick, etc..) is coming from my computer screen (located in between the monitors) instead of the lyd48's! I would definitely recommend anyone who is looking for a studio upgrade. Best of all, I haven't even taken the time to calibrate them yet with Sonarworks and they sound fantastic as is!

The best sound I've ever heard

By Mikey M. from Washington
Music Background: Piano, ambient electronica

I've worked in a handful of good studios but have honestly never heard any monitoring system like this one. At quiet volumes I can hear everything. They're a little dangerous, as I've been listening to longtime favorite recordings and discovering they're not quite as good as I'd thought they were. And my own mixes, even the best ones, well... let's say I now know exactly where I have room for improvement. They're in a mid-sized treated room, mounted on isoacoustics tabletop stands, running full-range with the Dynaudio sub just filling out the lowest low end. Highest recommendation.

Expectations surpassed!!!

By Kory M. from Boise

After returning Adams all of my research lead me to these. They have surpassed all of my expectations on every level. Perfect detail! The mid range is so precise and the crossover points couldn"t be better. Really an honest listening experience. Very pleased with my purchase.

Really Nice Monitors

By Ross W. from Southfield Michigan
Music Background: Amateur / semi-pro

I come to the LYD 48s from over ten years of tracking and mixing on Dynaudio BM6As (and prior to that, BM15As, which were too large for my space) in a small project studio with a 15"x13" control room. While maintaining the distinctive Dynaudio sound, these have the forward midrange I felt was missing in the previous models while keeping the small format and price range I was looking for. I worked a while with Meyer Sound Labs HD1s, which were nicer — especially for tracking — but overkill for me at $5k/pr. Focals I liked, Adams not so much.

I also use the LYD 48s for recreational listening through a UA Apollo Twin interface for D/A and controller so that I"ll become familiar with, and accustomed to, their sound with a variety of material.

They are not screaming loud, especially with the bass extension engaged, but I wouldn"t blast them anyway. I"m mainly using them for mixing and editing at 70-80dB, close-range at around 3ft, so they"re plenty loud for me. They would not have enough deep bass for Hip Hop, EDM, or soundtracks. Add a sub or two for those purposes. They"re probably fine for rock, pop, jazz. There"s a subjectively light, airy, slightly glossy quality to their sound in my new, fairly large, live room (25"x25" with a 15" ceiling). They sound a little small in there — which is to be expected. I had originally intended them for a smaller room. They"d be better as secondary reference in a large room, but I like them enough in comparison with the other Dynaudios I"ve used to keep them as my main and only monitors other than headphones.

The filters are useful — I set mine to "Dark" to offset the live, bright acoustics of the walls and floor. I"m using the extended bass for the large room. I"m not partial to ported speakers, but the rear ports are minimal, and I haven"t noticed any woofiness at all. The bass, while not huge or extremely deep, is solid and tight; a more important factor to me. The mids, as I say, are clear and present, and the highs are the soft-dome, bright-yet-smooth type I generally prefer over metal or ribbon transducers.

Regrettably, I can"t say after only three days of using them how well mixes will translate. I expect from experience they"ll work fine once adjusted to. There"s no question these are good monitors for their price, and gifted engineers could use them professionally as a main reference to mix and even master certain genres of music.

Incredible!

By Sweetwater Customer from Missouri City, TX
Music Background: Professional classical musician. Top tier symphony orchestra. Solo projects and chamber music.

I have used several monitors at home and also in full production studios. Classical recordings on International labels as well as sound stages. The Dynaudio LYD 48 rank up with the top name in the recording industry. I have wonderful PMC monitors and these exceed them in every manner. Dynamic range, pitch translation and depth of expression.

Incredible Frequency Range

By Sweetwater Customer

These speakers are getting lots of great reviews, and deservedly so. There are lots of comments about how great they sound, but what seems to get overlooked is the incredible frequency range (32Hz-21kHz). Great studio monitors!

Great!

By Doctor R. from CA
Music Background: Music Producer / Engineer / Musician / Studio installer of 37 yrs.

If you have a room that is mid size ( mine is 20x20 ) these fairly small midfield 3 ways will astonish you.
Plenty of bass, exceptional stereo spread and accuracy, and more volume than you would think you could get.
No 8" 2 way that I know of is close to the same league. With adjustable EQ and being all hand-built, these easily are the best choice for their price point. I usually use audiophile speakers, but these fit the bill for todays sound. you can't go wrong..( same goes for the right side ) LOL....

Excellent

By Sweetwater Customer

I got these a few weeks ago. They did require a little bit of break in time. Also, I had to get the switches on the back properly set. But, that was quick and painless. That being said, they do what studio monitors are supposed to do. When I play great recordings/mixes through them, they sound great. They also do a good job of telling on bad ones. They are well balanced, clear, and and cover the spectrum. No need for a sub. The quality is excellent. I shopped exhaustively before buying these. These were a little more than I originally planned on spending. I also considered some other ones that were of a comparable price point. But, if I had it to do over, I would still get these. I do need to point out, that if you get a chance to listen to these, make sure you use a great recording. If you use a bad recording, these things will tell. They are very honest.
