Great playing acoustic bass, but needed a good setup to be playable

By Michael C. from Happy Valley, OR

I purchased this bass to use in a working band, and it does the job nicely.

The good stuff: Sounds great, especially with flat wound strings. I can get it to sound very close to my P-Bass. The fretwork is excellent. The truss rod is responsive to adjustments. The preamp offers a wide range of adjustment. The output jack is not through the bottom strap button, which allows me to use strap locks. The volume across all strings is well balanced. I have not been able to get the bass to feed back, even when playing relatively close to my bass amp.

The other stuff: Out of the box, the nut slots were cut way too high and the bridge saddle was way too high. Because of this, the action was quite high and it was impossible to play in tune. The preamp was attached crooked. The tuners were all loose and had to be tightened. There is no comfort cut on the back of the body, so the upper bout sticks you in the ribs if you play the bass up higher on the strap.

I'd say the bass is a good bang for the buck if you are looking for a great playing and sounding electric/acoustic bass. If you do not have the tools and skills to adjust the nut and bridge saddle, you might expect to pay for a setup to get the action playable and the bass to play in tune.

Also, the bass does not come with a case or gig bag, so you need to purchase one if you will be traveling with the bass.

Sounds great, but needed a good set-up to get there

By Michael C. from Happy Valley, OR

The best thing about this bass is its sound....absolutely fabulous. Depending on the strings you have installed and the settings on the preamp, it is very close to a bass with a magnetic pickup.

Initially I was a bit disappointed with the set-up out of the box. The slots in the nut were cut way too high, and the bridge saddle was too tall as well. The action measured .1 inch at the 12th fret on the G string and .120 inch on the E string. Once I filed the nut slots down and lowered the saddle, it plays very smooth and easy.

I'd say the bass is worth the price. The set-up out of the box needed work. The stock strings are way too bright and twangy. The tuners were all loose and had to be tightened. The preamp control plate was attached at a crooked angle. The back of the bass was constructed from 5 pieces of wood, which did not really show up in the photos.

But like I mentioned up front...it sounds great. It is very responsive to your plucking intensity and position. The volume across all strings is perfectly balanced.

If you are looking for a great sounding player to use for live performances...this is it. If you are looking for an investment...this is not it.

Liked but..

By Oz from Port Byron, NY

I never owned an acoustic bass before so when I saw this great deal I went for it. Biggest drawback to ordering online is that most of the time you never get a chance to play it first. Due to repeated problems with my right elbow it had fused itself into an angle. The most comfortable basses are ones with rounded edges on the body, light weight and low neck radius(9.5"). Had to hang it low to play it to have some comfort. I changed the bronze round wound strings to Brite Flats.
Nice sound but not the type of bass I could play on more than a couple of songs. Once it's paid for I'll trade it for something more suitable for my needs. Great Bass. Just not right for me.
Amazing service from my exceptional sales engineer Bart Amburn. Sweetwater is the best.

Just alright

By Chase from Prairieville, LA

Easy way to get an "acoustic" bass to appease your guitarist. Probably worth $ brand new. Needs a humbucker or something. Also, change out the strings. The set up was great out of the box though. Definitely not bad but could get better for the same.
