Awesome product

By Sweetwater Customer

Had this for about three weeks. I can't believe that I tried mixing without it. Low end production is very tight but allows the lowest frequencies to come through without being muddy.

Great Sub

By Scout from Seattle
Music Background: Engineer

This sub is very clean and punchy. It actually pairs with my Genelec 8020s quite well. I didn't have the budget at the time for the Genelecs sub, and now I don't feel the need to upgrade. It does the job very well and has plenty of volume. At the 10-13 ft range it definitely has the kick of a properly developed wave.

Unbeatable for the price

By Oscar C. from Los Angeles
Music Background: Sound Designer for Video Games

Pairing these with a stereo pair of the JBL 705P speakers for low end extension with an 80hz crossover. Super clean low end reproduction down to about 28hz. I use a subwoofer 4x the price at my company office vs this one for my home set up and aside from the slight roll off at the super low end these are easily comparable to something far more expensive.

The XLF mode sounds pretty silly but can be good for double checking how things will translate in clubs that bass boost their PAs a bunch.

I attached a before and after of a SoundID measurement of my minimally treated room before and after the subwoofer install and you can see how it really smoothed out the low end and offloads some of that work really nicely from the mains.

This thing is AWESOME!!

By Sweetwater Customer

It's what I've been missing on my studio setup for years. A must have if you want to move past stereo. This unit is awesome and even on a throw rug will make the windows shake. Only one small point. The corners should be smoothed over...but that's just being really picky. ...hehehe.

Clean, articulated bass

By Greg from Sandia Park, NM

Works well paired with the 6.5" monitor speakers in my drum rehearsal space. Listening to practice tracks and recorded rehearsal sessions yields a clear low-end with a satisfying amount of power across the dynamic range. Space is approx. 14x16'

Good low volume reference

By Jack M. from Glen Allen, VA
Music Background: Songsmith.

I wanted to live with the JBL LSR310S 10-inch Powered Studio Subwoofer before I wrote this review. I had a previous version (I can't remember the exact model) but it had a different "feel" than the one I'm now using. It was more boomy and less defined. It was the series that could use the optional microphone setup to tune the speakers to the room. I never liked that tech and I don't think I ever got it to work right. To my ears, the JBL LSR310S is more sharp and defined and much more simpler to setup than my previous gear.
-
I like comparing my bass to songs that I love. In operation with my JBL 305P MkII 5-inch Powered Studio Monitors, turning the volume down really helps me balance areas in the entire mix (Highs, Mid and Lows). This is very key for identifying ares of concern. The JBL LSR310S also jams when the volume is needed especially in the CROSSOVER FREQUENCY settings. Changing the XLR (Extended Low Frequency) setting activates a circuit that emulates the bass tuning common in club playback systems. Beware, this setting will shake everything. I really enjoy the JBL LSR310S. I feel that the JBL LSR310S works very well with my JBL 305P MkII 5-inch Powered Studio Monitors and that this setup has greatly helped my mix. I am very satisfied.

Sounds Good in Medium Room

By eric from cdmx

Sounds good, it's well constructed and pairs well with other monitors just as well with the JBL. It was kinda difficult to find the best place in the room and the volume to balance it with the satellites but once its setup correctly the bass its very accurate and don't feel like a different system (2.1) feels more like a 3 way full range system. Isn't super loud but works as intended

It adds definite body to bass

By Matthew from Tx
Music Background: bedroom guitar started 1999 and music lover

This sub completely changes music; I'm using it with two JBL 3 Series MkII 305P speakers supported on stands; the 305Ps connected to this sub and then the sub is connected to a "SSL 2" interface; the interface's usb cable connected to my CPU.

The audio quality wasn't excellent, for me, until I ended up with the sub and both 305Ps' Input Sensitivity set at +4dBu, sub crossover set at 80Hz, each 305P's EQ Boundary and HF Trim both of them set at 0, both 305P volume knob at 9, and sub volume at max, interface volume around 1:00.

Now, the bass in cd audio is incredibly amazing and you can easily and clearly hear all the high frequency too. I have the 305Ps placed near two of my room's corners; and the sub sits, a little in front of the 305Ps, in almost the room's horizontal center. I moved it nearer to a side wall bc when it's placed in the horizontal center the bass from one side of the room perfectly meets bass from the other side and the bass cancels itself out. This was quite evident, then moved this sub over a little… and bass sounds fantastic now.

LOVE THIS SUB!! :D

Note: I haven't adjusted the sub crossover, but its 80Hz is so nice! :)

Moves some Air

By Andrew I. from Twin City

I have 2 of these. One paired with JBL 305's and a Yamaha YC 73. Another paired with JBL 306's and a Nord Stage 4. Sub is amazing for the price range. I can feel the floor and air moving. It works well for acoustic pianos and deep base synth sounds.

Smooth, natural low end extension

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Mixing live sound at all levels for 30+ years

I've been using home theater subs in my home studio for years. However, after the amp in my most recent one failed, I decided to step up to a real studio sub. I chose the LSR310s as it matches perfectly with my JBL LSR305's (1st gen). After hooking it up, I realized that I should have bought this years ago. Once I put it in position and ran some tuning to determine the proper volume level, I played some familiar music. The low end is so smooth and seamless now. It just naturally extends the music down in a way that the home theater subs never did. This sub is not overly hyped at any frequency and extends smoothly down to ~30Hz. While I could crank it all the way up and rattle the walls, I have it set relatively flat in relation to my LSR305's. Music has never sounded so good and it makes mixing so much easier with an accurate low end.

Great low end without breaking the bank

By Sweetwater Customer

This sub really lets me hear the low end of my mixes so I can EQ things properly. It sounds great, and it wasn't too expensive. JBL makes good products, and I've got the 5" tops to go with this. They work seamlessly together and I really like the sound. I would definitely recommend these for anyone doing home mixing, and I suppose it would work well for a home audio setup also.

Great way to complete a smaller home studio 3 way monitor system

By Robert L. from Columbia Falls, MT

Pair this with the Auralex SubDudeII. Set your volume ratio between your mains and your good to go. Make sure your room has some decent bass trap treatment, for sure. It can certainly crank, so find that right natural volume, and I'm positive your mixes will start to tighten up, and you won't be drowning in low end bass results on your mix. When you can hear it, it's much easier to mix.

Pairs Perfectly with Yamaha HS8 Setup

By David P. from Atlanta
Music Background: Radio production

It took me a few minutes to dial in the JBL, but once I figured that out it sounds smooth and complimented my setup perfectly. I'm not sure why anyone in a studio setting would want to use anything but the 80hz crossover. It had PLENTY of power, in fact, it's set to about 40 percent power to balance out with my studio monitors. Folks that say it doesn't have enough power need to turn down the gain of their monitors.

The whole idea of a studio sub is not to blow you away (which this can certainly do) but rather to compliment (extend the frequency range of) the monitors. It does this very well. If you don't use this balance, your mixes will not be accurate may result in them being low-frequency deprived.

I can easily switch between sub + crossovered monitors to monitors with no crossover with my Mackie 1642VLZ4 mixer. I just use a subgroup output to isolate my monitors without the sub. What makes this possible is that the HS8 monitors have 2 inputs, so your miles may vary.

When dialing your sub in, remember that "less is more." I've found this to be true in just about every facet of life.

Happy Mixing.

Poor performance for JBL

By Rob F. from Tx
Music Background: Haustronaut Recordings producer and Dj

I was super excited to finally get a sub for my studio to really get the full depth of music while playing and producing. Unfortunately my KRK Rocket 6 still put out more low end response then this under whelming subwoofer. I appreciate its price point but it would have been nice if Ronnie Jackson had let me know when he suggested this peace of gear that for just 100$ more I could have procured a real sub.

Not what you would expect

By Dwight from Alabama

Once I got it dialed in to my 5" LSR speakers it was just awesome. Having said that, dialed in meant I had to turn the LSR speakers down to about 3/4 power with the sub almost at max to get a balanced overall system output. But it sounded awesome in my small room, in a larger room this would be insufficient. Moving forward 27 months, the internal board malfunctioned/overheated and it is now a very large paper weight. There is not a cooling system sufficient enough to cool the heat sinks on the board and the power transistors either burn up and/or the board delaminates. I did enough research to actually find a replacement board but I can buy a new speaker for a little bit more than a board costs. If you are just searching for more bass look to the LSR 308, if you want deeper bass look elsewhere.

Great addition

By Sweetwater Customer

I had the 308 monitors for almost 2 years before adding this to the mix. I still have not mixed anything with it yet, but listening to it to get a feel for what it adds has been great fun. It just fills in the gaps that the 308s left and I would say it's critical piece in a full monitor set up.

By Scott from Trinidad & Tobago
Music Background: Producer/Guitarist/Singer/Engineer

I have the 306P and decided to upgrade my set up and get the sub to match. Whilst it kills, what impressed me the most is the balance between the 2. The crossover between the monitors and the sub is amazing. Its well worth the investment. I will say if you are in a small room, you will need to treat the room with things like bass traps to get perfect results.

Physically huge - Super Powerful - Clean and Detailed

By Sweetwater Customer

Pros:

1. Hugely powerful. Would probably take the paint off my walls if I cranked it too much. However, even with the imposing power, it's never boomy or distorted.

2. Detail. I've played some very heavy bass at unreasonable volumes through it and it never even blinks. Steady, smooth, detailed bass at whatever volume you want.

3. Very clean meshing with the JBL LS305's I'm using for monitors. Very easy to hook up, no adjustment was required. Just make sure it's all setup like the manual tells you, and you're golden.

Cons:

1. Would be easier if the Volume knob was on the front so you could actually reach it when under your desk. The sheer size of the thing makes it a little weird to reach around back of to adjust. Honestly I'm just nitpicking at this point. They did move the volume up on the back towards the top which makes it a little better.

Overall:

Would buy again in a heartbeat. It's well built, really powerful, very detailed and clean, and easy to hook up.

It's a Pretty good subwoofer

By Jacob

I have Jbl 308ps and I got the lsr310'sand the first one I received turned on for a second and then died, I sent it back and my second one worked and Is still working, but I've found a few things out. First if you have anything more than fives, even if you have fives I would recommend getting a xlr mono y splitter for each channel for the cheapest way to by-pass the crossover because it lowkey sucks. This sub also has a resonance problem with the bass port at certain frequencies which blows my mind that made it past testing. But other than that It bangs like crazy with the xlf mode and even on 80hz and has very smooth bass. But its up to you and If i could go back I would probably go with the krk but this was on sale for black friday so... Its a good option just wish they coulda thought it out a bit more.

JBL sub

By James L. from Tampa, Fl
Music Background: Professional musician and engineer

I have been looking for a sub for a long time. I don't think you can go wrong with this sub. My mains are Mackie HR824'S and although they have a great low end, the JBL LSR 310s add this incredible low dynamic that completely rounds out my overall mixing sound. If you are looking to add fabulous bottom end to your mixes, this is a great unit for the money....

Internal Amp goes bad

By Shad S.

Had it for just over a year and then the volume dropped. No thump at all. Sent it in to Sweewater for repair and they stated that they fixed it but when I got it back, it still had no volume. I have to send it back a second time. It is pretty expensive to send due to the weight and size. I loved it when it worked...But quality of the internal amp is questionable. I would not have written this review but I am not the only one that has had the exact same issue.

Descent for Music Playback in Studio. Great for Mixing.

By Larry M. from Dallas, TX

First off, these are not designed for earth shaking thump watching a surround sound movie. Nor would you want to use them for mixing tracks, but they do add enough bass to make leisure music playback worth listening to.

What I like best about them is when the crossover over is set to "80Hz" they are almost completely transparent when mixing using the complemented JBL 306's studio monitors - so I don't have to turn it off. When I want to listen to some songs for leisure playback, I switch the crossover to "XLF" to get more pronounced bass from the song. Would be way better if that switch was located on the front.

As others have stated, this sub is underpowered. When fully cranked, it sounds more like a 80-100 watt sub. (I have a old Realistic 200 watt ($275) sub for my Home Theater that would pounce this JBL to death -and at only number 3 on the volume knob). However, the JBL sub will give you an accurate representation of how your audience would hear your track blasting out of a OEM car radio.

I picked these up at a discounted price to sub my JBL 306's to maintain as a complete set. BTW, the 306's are phenomenal! But if you want real thump then you need to look at other subs.

Best Sub for the price hands down!

JBL LSR310S is such a beast Subwoofer, super accurate and extremely smooth also deep and perfectly separates the Mid-high and Lows from my Kali LP-6's. Listening at low volume is just like listening to it loud. Got mine today I have been missing out for years, don't do the same thing as me, BUY IT. Don't forget to dial down the volume on your monitors if you have them at 0db, lower the volume and dial the bass volume correctly.

Nice!

By Sweetwater Customer

This bass box is a beast. I had a klipsh 10" temporarily in use but didn't have the in chain connectivity necessary to make it a fluid setup. This is nice. All the bass needed to match the LSR 308's. My biggest mistake was ordering 25' XLR cables just to find the best spot for it was up front in the middle of the 308's. Oh well, now I have 4 long mic cables. Overall this system in whole, is an amazing setup & my studio is now complete. Thanks Billy for all your help!

Not exactly what you’d think

By Christian P. from Connecticut
Music Background: Professional drummer and sound engineer

Hi I'm a professional drummer and sound engineer, I received this sub at the same time as I got the matching 6.5's, I was very excited so I started hooking up all my signal cables and then power, I go to flip the switch on the sub and the sub doesn't power on, (face palm), so I tried switching the iec cable, nothing, I call the sweetwater tech line and after a cumulative hour and 20 minutes I get a tech that tells me it's defective and I need to swap it out, no biggie things happen. So I re wire directly into the 6.5's for the time being and omg there incredible I listened to them for 3 straight hours at full volume and they took it like a champ, the bass was tight and punchy the high end Cristal clear, and they had so much depth, but back to the sub. I get the new sub and hook it up instantly, and it definitely was not what I was expecting, in fact it was kinda disappointing, not only does if fell like it's gonna blow it's self up on the extended low frequency setting, I tried running it on the 80h crossover and it feels weak. it pulled all the depth and punch out of 6.5's, I played with the settings for hours on end and still no luck, I expect more for 400 usd. Now I'm stuck wondering if I swich back to only the 6.5's or keep my massive brick of a sub that Is less than desireable

Matched with older model 8" JBL Studio Monitors (LSR4328p)

By Rich W. from Rochester, NY
Music Background: Professional Audio Engineer/Music Hobbyist

I've been using my pair of 8" JBL Studio Monitors (LSR4328p) for over a decade, on countless projects. And most recently for our C-19 driveway dance parties. Now that the dance parties are on hold, and my studio is back together, I started a project that reminded me that I'm not in the recording studio at work anymore; I began to miss the lowest octave. I couldn't find the matching sub for the original tops, so I went with the latest JBL studio sub offering. I had to disable the RMC (room mode correction) on the tops, because they ended up being delayed from the sub, and it caused some phasing in some of the lower notes. I'm looking into a software solution to replace this RMC processing.
This is well designed and built. And at $$$, it's an inexpensive studio subwoofer. I expect decades of use, and it looks like I could repair it myself if I ever have an issue.

The perfect match

By Kit
Music Background: Studio owner

I already had a pair of JBL LSR308's, and the LSR310S subwoofer is the perfect match for them. This sub does the job, and does it well. I am very happy with it. From the corner of the room, I am able to dial in just the right amount of lows, and with the crossover, the 308's feel relieved. This is a beefy unit with some nice control.

Great sub - NEEDS PROPER SETUP!

By Sweetwater Customer

TL;DR - balance the sub with the monitors, use the -10dBV setting on your LSR monitors if that's what you're using (as stated in the manual), and don't hesitate to use the -10dBV setting on the sub to get proper gain staging even if you're using "professional equipment." If you just dime everything, it won't be properly balanced and won't sound good. Balance out the system and use proper gain staging, and the sub is fantastic!

Don't be like me and just dime your LSR305s monitors and LSR310s sub when you get them all hooked up. You have to balance the system. I was disappointed with the output when I first received this sub. I had everything dimed and then just controlled the level with my audio interface. Well, that there is the problem - I didn't balance the levels between speaker and sub along with improper gain staging. As per the manual recommendations, I have the LSR305 monitors set to -10dBV on the back - IMPORTANT - always set them to -10dBV regardless of what you set the sub to - it's in the manual - this is the gain staging the LSR sub is sending to the LSR monitors as designed by JBL. I then had the sub set to +4dBu since my source is a Steinberg UR242 interface - figured professional equipment = +4dBu. THIS IS NOT THE CASE! Different playback devices will have different output levels, regardless of what you're using. The LSR system has +20dBu of headroom, and the max output of my interface is +10dBu, given a 0dBfs audio signal (which typically it won't be, it'll be -6 to -3dBfs or so) - that means there's 10-16dB of headroom left on the table. To put it short, it wasn't loud enough. I didn't have everything gain staged properly. I read about setting up reference levels for studio monitors and got to work. For my interface, I needed the sub set to the -10dBV setting to get enough headroom.

I won't bore you with all the details, here's the short version: pink noise generator from DAW (Reaper in this case) set to 0dBfs, iPhone with dB meter app for reading levels at listening position set up on a stand, balanced levels between speakers and the sub. I set my output knob on my interface to about 1 o'clock for setting an 85dB reference level, since I wanted more headroom to go past that for general listening. Set each speaker independently to a set, identical level (whatever you want your maximum or reference to be) - count the number of clicks. Turn them back down, then set the sub to -6dB below that. Now turn the speakers back up to where you had them. You should now have a balanced system where the speakers aren't overpowering the sub with plenty of output and headroom to get loud. For me, I set the typical 85dB reference level at lower point on my interface's output knob so I know where reference is located, but can turn it up past that, since 85dB isn't exactly loud. I have the sub set to 80Hz crossover for general use - the XLF setting is good for emulating bass-boosted music and similar scenarios. If you're mixing/recording, you should leave this on 80Hz and only set it to the boosted setting for checking how it will sound in a boosted scenario. Can also be enabled for general playback (movies, music, games), but best left at 80Hz for professional work.

After getting the sub balanced properly with the studio monitors, it pokes through great, is clean/tight with good low end extension, not excessively boomy (but can be with the XLF switch). Sounds like I had originally thought it should. This is all in a large, untreated room as well. One day I'll be able to dedicate a smaller room with sound treatment to my hobby, but for now, it sounds excellent - in a treated room it should sound absolutely stellar.

Impressive compliment to LSR305's

By Braden G. from MN

I had gotten 305's a couple years ago here (with the help of my Sweetwater sales rep Mason B.) and I've been long over due for a subwoofer. This sub is specifically designed for my monitors so it was an easy choice. The bass is powerful and accurate. This sub suits my bedroom studio well
but double check with the dimensions because it is still sizable. Looks sleek. solid construction.
The only think I dislike is that the power button is on the back of the unit and rather low. It's a bit of a mission to power it on/off underneath a studio desk but if placed closer to one side it's manageable. Overall, this product met my reasonably high expectations and I would recommend. ...this is an amazing deal.

Don't do it. Not worth the headache. Get the Yamaha or KRK.

By Jonathan from DC

First - it took three of these to be shipped and returned (huge hassle) because JBL's packaging is thin and offers no protection. The downfacing subwoofer cone isn't protected and two arrived damage. Those two also arrived "opened" because JBL's retail package does not use adequate tape on the bottom. Luckily, Sweetwater took them back and shipped the third with their own box.

Second - this thing sounds terrible. Cross over is limited to hard-wired settings and they are both weak. In order to actually get some low-end sound going through these, you have to engage the "Extended Frequency" option - which then turns this into an overpriced computer gaming speaker - and not a studio monitor.

Once you get it dialed in (which you likely won't - these don't balance correctly because the output is super low unless you crank it - the problem is - when you crank it, you have to turn down your mid/high monitors, and the input levels won't match. Basically, you will lose out on a bunch of sonic detail.

Lastly, the bass frequencies on this come in and out on their own. These are poorly designed and poorly tuned. Bass frequencies aren't supposed to "disappear". I regret this purchase and will instead buy a second Yamaha HS8S. The Yamaha offers much more control, does not have "disappearing" bass frequencies, and are quite easy to balance with almost any other monitor.

Sleek, Clean, and Smooth!

By Zachary W. from NC

I needed a sub to pair with my JBL LSR 305 pair. I love the mid-drive in the 305s, but the lows were a bit lacking, so I decided to get the 310 to give me the detail I need to mix down low. It does an amazing job. My monitors and the sub are both sitting on Auralex pads, and altogether sounds so smooth and clean. The 310 is super sleek looking as well. I mix in a room that is about 10 foot by 9 foot (not the best environment, but I've treated it as best as I can) and although I had concern the sub would be too big, it isn't. It sits perfect nestled behind my desk in between my monitors. This thing sounds great at low volume, and can be absolutely cranked and still sends a clean and smooth low end! I'm very happy I got this!

JBL LSR310S 10" Powered Studio Subwoofer

Why would you not get this sub!

By Terence P. from Granbury TX

When I finally got this sub to go with my 8in jbl speakers I had to go back to just the speakers to really see how much of a difference it made. I cant believe i was listening to everything without a sub and thought it was ok hahahaha. What a huge difference this sub made! The tone and clarity are wonderfully crisp

At First I Was Not Impressed.....BUT

By MrGeno from Connecticut USA
Music Background: Playing for 8 years, small band.

...But once I got it dialed in I was impressed.
This is a smaller Subwoofer power wise compared to the $1,000-$2,000 subs but it was all I needed.
I run this unit in my studio which is "Not a bar or club". I play for friends and family and for fun. It works great and supplies plenty of bass for what I need.
It gives my overall sound a much more complete feel and fills the room nicely.
If I were to take this out on my gigs it would not be enough unless it was a small room.
The price is fair for what you get and I hope to enjoy it for years to come.

If you need a studio sub, look no further

By Matt H. from Weymouth, MA

Incredible sub, great for use in your studio. It's incredibly powerful but is very detailed, accurate, and true to the source. I have it paired up with my Tannoy studio monitors and it's also great for playback with uncompressed audio/vinyl. I can't help but think this thing is underpriced.

Would Not Recommend

By David J.

After 40+ years in the business I have used a number of monitoring setups with subwoofers. The JBL LSR310S just doesn't make the grade. To start, It says selectable crossover. What it should have said is choice between fixed 80Hz crossover and extended low frequency setting. Power is listed as 200W, but this sub is way underpowered. In fact when attempting to use this with a professional balanced +4 setup is was so quiet you couldn't even tell it was active. The only way to even hear a difference was to make sure the volume knob was set to max, the impedance was set to -10, and the crossover was set to extended. In my professional opinion I feel that there are better choices available when it comes to selecting a subwoofer for your studio.

OUTSTANDING!!!

By Alan C. from Florida
Music Background: Broadcasting and Audio Production

The JBL 310S is everything they say about it and more. I added it to a pair of 305's and the sound reproduction of music is amazing -- full, clean and tight...everything JBL is known for (it's no wonder radio stations have used JBL monitors for years). Plus, the service I received from Ian was excellent, as is always the case with Sweetwater. I highly recommend this sub AND Sweetwater. Get it and you won't regret it.

JBL LSR310S 10"

By Mike from New York
Music Background: writer/engineer/producer

I recently started doing mixes for more modern music in my studio and decided I needed a sub to pair up with my JBL LSR 4326p's. The LSR 310S was the obvious choice. Incredibly easy set up (really just plugging in two XLRs), flip it on and off you go.... Immediately noticable difference! Takes about 30 minutes for the learning curve to train your ears. Don't know how I went this long without one!

Wow

By Andy
Music Background: Pianist/Vocalist

I had no idea this thing would produce the volume and quality of bass it does. My only complaint may come from the neighbors if I don't get some sound proofing soon! I use this paired up with two JBL 308P MKII 8" Powered Studio Monitors, for both recording and watching movies/ tv shows.
The bass it was producing was really good, but after purchasing and installing the Auralex DST-LENRD Studiofoam Bass Traps, all I can say is Wow!
Another fine product here at Sweetwater recommended by the man, the myth, the legend, Aaron Swaidner!

Works Well

By Jerry from Deptford Township NJ
Music Background: A few decades

I bought the 5" JBL powered reference monitors, and I am very happy with them. I like to do most of my editing at lower volume levels. And you're only going to get so much response from a 5 inch 'woofer', especially at lower volumes. I was going to get a larger set of studio monitors, but space in my studio is getting slim. Sales suggested this. It's not a 'wow, what a difference', and that was not my expectation. It permits me to hear the lower ends in my mix that were present but not too audible with the smaller reference monitors.
So I still get to edit at lower volumes, and I can hear the lower ends nicely, as they are recorded. If I crank up the volume, which I do to make certain that the mix sounds well at high volumes as well, then this sub rises to the level of where I set the bar. It doesn't sound like the Subs in the car of the guy who delivers your pizza's, that low end rumble. It plays the low frequencies as you recorded them. I am so far quite happy with this instead of two more big monitors, it fits nicely under my recording table, and it does what it's supposed to do. I would buy it again.

Powerful Bass

By John from Columbus OH

This thing is a beast. It really adds to my system. I already had JBL 305's and I added this in. It is much bigger than I thought. Just started using it but it seems to be well built and will last. I'm happy with the all the JBL speakers so far and they sound great without a large investment. I'm running these through my laptop with a DAC and amp. I have the LSR310 turned down because it will shake the walls. I'm still experimenting with the different configurations.

MAKES A GREAT COFFEE TABLE!!!!

By ET f.

They tried to tell me, there are several reviews on this sweetwater page that mention low volume output levels with this sub. THAT"S 100% TRUTH!!! I can barely hear the subwoofer at maximum volume. Even my LBL monitors once plugged into this subwoofer have a lower volume output level. Tech support could not find a fix for this issue. Also the sub is a lot bigger than it looks in the picture. Now I have to box this big thing up and find a Fedex Center to ship it back. MAJOR HEADACHE. DO NOT BUY!!!!!

Im not using it the way its suppose to be used ... i have the sub on a channel ... the speakers on a channel ... the logitech on a channel ... and the gaming headset on a channel of the RME UCX ... this way since its no bypass ... I can add the Sub when needed ... the extended low frequency switch is perfect for this ... so overall I like this sub ... Oh yeah I matched it with the JBL 305

Correct hookup is the key

By Mike from Sunnyvale, CA
Music Background: Working Pro

I use mine via a direct connection from my monitor controller and do not use the built in crossover.

The JBL instructions state that when you do this, go into one side, either L or R but not both. Do not believe this.

A TRS connection into one side only yielded the weakest output—same with XLR. Going to an unbalanced mono guitar cable into one side gave me much better output but I suspected there was better.

What did the trick was using a mono Y cable. Sweetwater carries a couple: the Hosa CYP103 - 3' & the Hosa CYP105 - 5'. That fed a signal to both coils of the speaker. The resulting output was a lot more than double (by loading one side only, the unused coil was acting as a brake on the speaker motor).

To sum up, I finally got the promised output and it balanced nicely with my monitors. I also found some shelves that now rattle because of the extra bass (easily fixed).

The reason I'm dinging it half a star is that, though JBL states you can hook it up other ways, their instructions are wrong on how to do it.

Bass JBL 310s

I was advised to get the bass speaker after I had purchased the 2 JBL 308 monitor speakers. The bass speaker was well worth the purchase. Great sub to go with my JBL monitors

By Vern from Norway
Music Background: Professional Producer/Mixer

Needed a little more oomph in my nicely tuned room with my self-aligning JBL 8" monitors. Even with a great tuned room this somewhat small sub added the definite clarity and feel from the bass I needed to transition my mixes perfectly from my room to car mixes for my clients. I personally didn't need to turn this up too much; but the little bit DEFINTELY helped bring more bass clarity to my mixes especially in the kick drum and bass guitar clarity. This is actually one of the more impressive bang for the buck pieces of gear in my studio and I wished I would have purchased it two years prior to when I did. The down firing aspect of this sub makes all the difference in my opinion in making the bass frequencies very tight sounding. Especially when you find your sweet spot in your room. My spot was directly under my console and closer to my right side stereo speaker. With a little placement depending on your application this cheap sub is absolutely great! If I knew what it could have done for my mixes I would have gladly paid twice as much as the current sticker price! Excellent!

Excellent!

By Chris from Chicago

I chose this to match my JBL LSR305 monitors and couldn't be more pleased, it's an extremely detailed, accurate and responsive solution to add bass to your monitors, the built in crossover works wonderfully with JBL's LSR monitors.

Mike had this to me the next day and it arrived in perfect condition, something I was worried about with the size and weight of this package.

Couldn't be happier and now I get to enjoy all the beautiful frequencies from my system for casual listening and music production,

Thanks Mike & Sweetwater! You guys never disappoint.

Feel The Power

By Christian F. from CA
Music Background: Knucklehead

If one has not experienced the well balanced output of a subwoofer, make room on the bucket list. It is a fat slice of pie from Heaven, a full body thrill, a mind bending low resonating at unheard frequencies. This marvelous little beast from JBL has rounded out a new monitor system for my home studio, and It is worth every penny! The monitors alone are great, but with the addition of the subwoofer the low end is much more present and clean, as well as powerful. If one can swing the cost, don't hesitate to add a subwoofer, and the JBL LSR310S 10" is, so far, a great choice, at a good price point.

Great Sub — What you need to know.

By Mike from Silicon Valley
Music Background: Working music pro

I am quite happy with my LSR310S and use it with a pair of Equator D8 monitors and a Radial MC3 passive controller crossed over at 80Hz. I can hear the differences between the bass and kick in any mix and can trust the results.

I do not have the output running through the sub and up to the mains as most do. Instead, I control the mains and sub separately from the MC3. When I first hooked it up, I tried a pair of balanced cables and wondered, "where did all the bass go?" Figuring I might have a polarity issue, I tried one channel only — same thing (what the???).

Finally, I used an unbalanced guitar cable in one channel only. Boom! There it was! My studio is in the middle of electrical interference hell (aka the Silicon Valley) so I used a balanced cable from the MC3 to the JBL but terminated it with a 1/4TRS-F to TS-M stereo to mono converter (Hosa GPP-290). Now I had a balanced line with a mono plug. Hey, it works and is quiet.

If you hook it up the conventional way, ignore the above but it gives you an idea how useful it can be in non-standard hookups.

The only downside is that this does not have a temporary bypass for comparison like most subwoofers. The Radial MC3 controller lets me do it from there so I'm good. I downgraded the LSR310S 1/2 star for that reason only.

Boom!

I ordered these speakers from Sweetwater with a pair of LSR 308 monitors. I was looking to replace a pair of high-end bookshelf speakers in an audio system. Coupled with the LSR 308's this sub really works well. Good solid, well-defined bass just pours out of this thing. Setup is easy. Lots of flexibility in settings to dial in your sound just right.

Yes, it's worth the money

By dodg1677

I always intended to add this to my JBL SR305's but held off because of price and to see how they worked without the sub. I was pretty happy with them but could see how pulling the lowest frequencies out could help. Well I was right. It made everything sound more musical with a bigger sound at the same volume if you know I mean. I just use the system now as a hobby though I played (keyboards) professionally for about 35 years. I have a recent work station and I also use my Mac with Logic. The system is very sweet and cohesive sounding. Now I can sit down and play and concentrate totally on the music.

Great sounding sub

By David C. from Roanoke, VA

Paired this with the LSR308s. Sounds nice and natural. Some seem to think this doesn't hit hard enough. Keep in mind, these are supposed to be uncolored and designed to help you mix. Its not like the sub in your car or the sub you use for your surround system. You may prefer your sub to be strong and in your face. Not everyone likes their sub frequencies set that high. Again, these are designed to help you mix a great overall accurate sound. I would have given it 5 stars if the xover was variable instead of set at 80 hz. Overall, good buy for the price point.

Not Enough Bass? You're all crazy

By Hoppy from Vermont
Music Background: Audio Engineer and Producer

I see a few reviews claiming they were underwhelmed by the bass this thing pumps out. First of all, placement in your room makes a huge difference. You have to be a good 5-10' back from the sub for the sub bass to fully bloom, but boy can it pump out a lot of CLEAN bass for a 10" speaker.

I have gigged with this sub added to a 12" PA system, and filled a 50 person basement with enough bass for dubstep at gig volume, so clearly this thing is a beast. Buy with confidence, and place it appropriately in your room for mixing.

Absolutely Stellar.

By Colton K. from Casper, WY
Music Background: Musician, Producer, Engineer.

First things first. If you have a small area to work in make sure you check you dimensions because this thing is huge. I was caught off guard by it's size. Luckily it worked out cause I have a giant room to mix in. This sub is great for the price. I run it with a pair of JBL LSR4326's and it keeps up with no problems. At first I was a little disappointed in the sound of this sub, but I think I was getting a little to hasty with setting it up as moving into a new room I had not set up any of my acoustic treatment and it just sounded muddy in a giant room with no treatment. However, once I got all my treatment up, paired it with a couple of Auralex propad decouplers and sub dude decoupler the set up I have rocks. Now I'm more than happy with the setup. For the price you get an absolutely stellar product.

Pro's.
-Large wattage, and solid woofer means it's super loud, this thing cranks.
-Very sleek and looks great.
-Feet on bottom for added decoupling.
-Quality build as is always expected from JBL.

Con's
-HUGE. This thing is massive.
-No adjustable crossover, so if you want to crossover at anything other than 80hz, you'll have to use an external crossover.... DON'T SKIMP.
-Definitely not made to sound good in any condition. Will require a half decent room to sound the way it should. It definitely didn't sound bad to start without a good room but it was a little separated.

Overall this is a great buy and I'm super happy with it. I'll probably never actually get rid of it.
And as always Aaron Smith, my sales guy at Sweetwater is the best. Fun to talk to, good dude, and sweetwater kicks ***. I'm a loyal sweetwater customer to the end for sure. I have yet to be disappointed.

Awesome sub

By Paul from Decatur TN
Music Background: 20 year sound tech

I have a pretty large room i bought this for. I installed a dolby 7.1system with all jbl control passive speakers and Chris helped me pick out everything i needed. System flat out rocks. First time i had it cranked up and fired up a movie 1 of our dogs and our cat launched out of the room and the pictures on the walls started moving. 1 is deffinately all you need and i had to cut power in half on back to keep under control.

Only thing i would change is to have a piece of paper right inside of the box that states the bottom of the sub is exposed and to only place on even surface. When i took it out i placed it on the edge of my sofa and almost ruined it. Thank goodness it is a soft couch and alot of give or i would have easily put a whole in it right out of the box..

Great unit lots of power even in my large room

I have a pair of JBL LSR 305's and had been putting off adding the subwoofer because it seemed a little pricey in comparison. However, after receiving it, quickly I might add, then setting it up, I only wish I had added it sooner. It was so refreshing to have the addition of clear, confident and effective low end added to my home studio setup. I can't believe, I ever tried making/creating music without a sub. I fianally have " 3 way system". Takes out the lower lows from the smaller speakers, making both the mids and bass a lot cleaner, deeper and most importantly, honest. This is my third completley different "project studio" setup. Learned from mistakes from before, been two years of no studio, so this time I'm doint it right. Got the LSR305's, loved the look and sound, figured it made sense to go with the matching(in more ways than one) sub. It is big, but when it comes to sound, sound itslef is the most important thing of all. Very happy. Sweetwater is the best. Worth The Difference

By Bill from Helendale, CA
Music Background: Singer, Musician and Engineer

When I learned about putting a home studio together, the only conversation about speakers was to get the best near field monitors I could afford; I did. Years later I did a mix in the studio, which included EQ, and burned a CD. Then I took the CD and put it into the player in my front room where I have a serious PA set-up, including a JBL 18-inch powered sub-woofer.

When the sound started I thought the walls would crack with all of the bass content! I needed to cut back on the bass in the mix but more than that, I needed to hear that content when I was mixing.

The JBLLSR310S meets the need in spades by letting me hear the bass content in all of its glory. If it's too much I know to tone it down or, otherwise, to turn it up.

I recommend it in the studio.

Hits deep, but large in size

By Rouslan

After the LSR305, I anticipated the LSR310S to be somewhat small and light. It turned out to be huge - the 10" driver at the bottom has a good margin around it before the edge of the enclosure.

Overall, bass is good and deep (goes down to high 20s). The enclosure is thin and knocking on it isn't reassuring, however, I can see internal bracing through the port, and the thin construction doesn't seem to influence the sound.

Keep in mind that the driver is exposed and at the bottom.

Overall good, but not great. Wish it was smaller in volume.

Astonishing

By Sean M. from Dayton, OH

I never realized how badly I needed a better sub until I tried this guy. Instantly my mixes gained clarity, Decisions about low end, high pass filtering, levels, and compression became instantly clearer. The entire mixing process is easier, more beneficial, and clearer. I am docking it half a star because it was initially underwhelming to listen to. I quickly became accustomed to the un-hyped nature of this sub and it definitely forces you to make informed decisions, but I was not astonished with its chest thumping abilities.

not good. ok at best

By CJ from Phoenix, AZ
Music Background: professional recording artist

I just brought one of these home along with the lsr305's. Let me say this, nothing but pure disappointment. I've been producing for years and used many sets of monitors in my day. If you are in an apartment these would be fine but if you have a professional studio or nice sound room in a home I could not recommend these or their counterparts. They are both severely underpowered and I mean severely. I hooked them up and knew within 30 seconds that they were all hype and would be going right back where they came from. I also wanted to note that one of the lsr305 monitors was dead on arrival with the power light not ever coming on as well.

JBL LSR310S Underpowered, but I have a Work Around

By Jerry from Hanover, MD
Music Background: 50+ years of trial and error with musical stuff!

Sweetwater Rep, Please replace the Review that I submitted yesterday (4/18), as I judged this product unfairly, and have found that it can be acceptable under the right conditions.

I have the JBL LSR305s, and while they are a good value for the money, the matching LSR310S subwoofer is NOT. Unless I received a lemon, which I don't believe that I have, this sub puts out very little sound in relation to the LSR305s because it is VERY underpowered. I bought it when it went on sale at a $100 discount, and I can understand why JBL was trying to clear them out! They're so underpowered that at first I could hear almost NOTHING at the 80Hz setting and had to use the extended low frequency to get any audible sound. I actually had to get on the floor and put my head in front of the sub to hear it! I am using Mogami Gold XLR cables and all of the connections and switch settings are correct and matched to the LSR305s in accordance with JBL's instructions. I was about to source an inline power booster to try to get sound out of this sub, when it occurred to me that, yes, the sub is underpowered, but MAYBE I could boost the source and work around this limitation. I discovered that if I reduced the volume (A LOT!) on the JBL LSR305s, and turned up the source, a Roland Quad Capture connected to my laptop PC, and THEN had the sub set at its highest volume level, I could get acceptable volume for a small room. Therefore, my disappointment with this sub stands, because it IS VERY UNDERPOWERED, but it is acceptable if you listen at low to moderate volume levels and use the work around that I just mentioned. Of course, if mounted at ear level you can get more volume, so for some out there that may be helpful. Overall, this is the most disappointing product I've ever received from the JBL brand due to its lack of amplifier power. The LSR305's are a good value, and I recommend them, but this sub doesn't have the power to let you hear the bass unless you REALLY turn up the source and cut the volume on the LSR305s. The sub’s speaker may be capable of high SPL levels, but you won’t get that out of the low-powered amplifier that comes with this unit. It may do the job in a small room, but it is not a good buy. BTW, these things are about as big as sofa end tables, and they have a large, flat, top surface, so if you buy one you WILL HAVE a place to set those ‘Teach Yourself DAW Software’ manuals.

Bought this sub to replace my gen1 version and the sound quality is night and day. Very clear and precise bass output as it's matched to a set of the LSR305's and couldn't be happier. Can't complain about the discount also as $299 vs. $399 is a no brainer ...")

Not A good choice

By Jeff M. from Texas

I thought this would be a nice compliment to my JBL LSR 5'' but not. Hooked the sub up and could not get the volume I needed to hear the low end of a mix. Return it and got another same problem. I am disappointed in this sub and JBL becouse I had such High hopes for this product.

Exactly what I wanted

By Jaime from Atlanta

I am music engineer (hip-hop/rap/r&b), and I do a lot of my mixing work at my home studio where my ears are most comfortable. I use Yamahas HS8 primarily for my mid and high range, and I was using a Yamaha sub HS10 with my setup (trying to keep same brand). Recently, I just got fed up with the Yamaha sub's inability to reach the deep low end (below 80 Hz), it would almost flutter in regions below that. So I went out and got the JBL, and WOW, what a difference. No flutter, nice, clean deep bass. It produces the kind of bass you will feel as well as hear..Its well worth the money, especially if you work in home studios or smaller "professional" studios. I haven't worked with the KRK sub at all, but this thing dances circles around the Yamaha sub in EVERY regard.

Solid Sub for a good price

By Scott from St. Louis, United States

A solid subwoofer for a good price. I'm using this with the JBL LSR 305 speakers and the sub fills out the low end quite nicely. As a matched set with the LSR 305's, you can't go wrong for the price.

Sounds great!

I will also lower the star rating only because the JBL LSR series is supposed to be on the more "economic" end, yet this sub cost's as much as two of the 5" monitors from the same series, plus some ($400 as of 11/1/14). With that said, I love the sound that comes from this subwoofer. Paired with the LSR305 5" monitors it really is an all around great sounding setup. I would recommend it to anyone!

First!

By Roey H. from Charlotte, NC

Works perfectly with my LSR305s
Half a star down for the price not being as friendly as the rest of the LSR range.
4.5 stars for being able to produce frequencies that would make you run to the bathroom!

Not as powerful as the 200w rating would suggest (low end always needs much more power) but still plenty loud to compliment the LSR tops.
