Gibson Acoustic L-00 Standard - Vintage Sunburst Reviews

6-string Acoustic-electric Guitar with Spruce Top, Mahogany Back and Sides, Mahogany Neck, and Rosewood Fingerboard - Vintage Sunburst

You hear it in the mellifluous sound. You feel it in the silky playability. The genius of the Gibson Acoustic L-00 Standard is in the details. Details like the thermally aged Sitka spruce top that delivers superior vintage-inspired tone and appearance. Or the hand-sprayed nitro finish, just like the original models from the 1930s and '40s. Or the use of hide glue for the hand-scalloped bracing that helps produce the vintage, big Gibson sound in a smaller-bodied guitar. Take it from the guitar fanciers here at Sweetwater: you'll cherish every moment you spend with the Gibson L-00 Standard.

My Personal favorite guitar

By Eric Reid from Fenton, MI on April 16, 2024

My 2017 L-00 standard has been heavily gigged and traveled around the states for most of the last 7 years minus a little while due to Covid (might have been played more a home than ever during that time). I am getting ready to have the second re-fret completed and have never had an issue other than normal maintenance like regular string changes and the very occasional truss rod tweak. With tons of bumps and bruises, a couple of decent scratches, and lots of playing wear (would probably make a lot of players cry), this single guitar has never once let me down, electronics included. My only complaint is the mini Grover Romantic tuners, but they're still on there and have always functioned perfectly, I just don't think they fit the L-00 esthetically and will be changing them soon to some nice Waverly or Golden Age cream buttons. IMO, there is something very, very special about this guitar. It has a very dark, deep, and haunting tone whether fingerpicked or played as hard as any of my dreadnaught acoustics and is crazy how much it inspires me to play/write and record music. This would 100% be my desert island over my HD-28, J45 50's original, 000-17, 000-15m, or D-18 and I love all of those guitars.

There's a Noticeable Difference

By Al Mascia from Michigan on March 30, 2023 Music Background: Singer/Songwriter

Always loved Gibsons. Recently bought the L-00 Standard through my guy Delvin at Sweetwater. Of course the buying process as well as delivery simple and easy as always. This was an upgrade for me from my Gibson L-00 Studio. I expected that there would be some difference but not this much. Yea, the case was a huge improvement but the sound and playability of the instrument were so much better than the Studio! Truly, much better than I had expected! Couldn't be happier with the purchase!

The Best for the Blues

By Chris from Milford, CT on April 9, 2021

I love playing acoustic blues and if I could I'd get an original L-1 but this is about as close as you're going to get. The sound and playability of this guitar is just outstanding. If you're on the fence, get off it and grab one. You won't play a better acoustic. Couldn't be happier with this guitar.

In search of tone

By Kennie from New York on August 18, 2019 Music Background: Composer, multi instrumentalists for over 40 years.

One of the best sounding (and looking) guitars I have ever owned. Whether it is overpriced that remain s to be seen. In my research the L-00 are well made through the decades and have outlasted many equally priced instruments in tone and style. I purchased this guitar for the long haul. I believe it was the perfect decision. Thanks Sweetwater for the choice

Very nice, easy player

I've been looking for a long-term keeper of a couch/porch/parlor player like this for many years. My standard was set far too high long ago by being in close proximity for a time to an actual 19th century Martin parlor -- a guitar with so much charisma and charm that no one could keep their hands off of it. I've been looking for something comparable without the unbearable preciousness of that guitar ever since. The L-00 is NOT that guitar.... BUT it's a very comfortable, extremely well-executed revision of another classic small-body acoustic and I am glad I took a chance on it.

My L-00 came perfectly set up and plays like a dream. It stays solidly in tune, with great feel and pitch all the way up the neck. I find myself picking it up whenever I have a moment -- even though it's not 120 years old, it has a charm of its own and I love it.

Tone-wise, its voice is clear and modestly bright, but perhaps on the reserved side in terms of harmonic complexity, i.e. it doesn't deliver a rich tapestry of multi-layered overtones. And it won't hold up flat-picking in a moderately high-volume jam against a couple of dreadnoughts -- it'll bottom out under heavy strumming. However, that's not the assignment one gives to a guitar like this, and its simplicity of tone and harmonic response is easily made up for in the satisfaction of how easy it is to make music with it.

Overall really, really fun and satisfying to play, looks and sounds great, and feels good to know its a well-made instrument that should get better with age. I'll be keeping it for a long time.

Disappointed with Gibson

By Sweetwater Customer from FL on July 20, 2023

I ordered this guitar from Sweetwater in April 2021. It arrived in perfect condition and played beautifully. Sweetwater is second to none when it comes to timeliness and quality. Just recently in June 2023 the pickup malfunctioned and stopped working. Unfortunately the warranty on the electronics is only 2 years, so I missed the mark by 2 months. I called Gibson but they refused to take care of the problem because it's "out of warranty", which I understand. But I've only had the guitar for 2 years and it's already malfunctioning. I'm a gigging musician and I bought this guitar because I needed a high quality, reliable instrument from a company I could count on to have my back. Unfortunately, Gibson isn't in the business of standing behind their products when they're out of warranty for 2 months. Technically, they don't have to. But I've had cheap pawn shop guitars that lasted longer and were more durable than this one. Since Gibson won't stand behind its products, then I will no longer be doing business with them. I'm having the guitar fixed at my own expense, then it will be sold.
