Gibson Les Paul Standard '50s P-90 Solidbody Electric Guitar - Tobacco Burst Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Mahogany Body, Maple Top, Mahogany Neck, Rosewood Fingerboard, and 2 Single-coil Pickups - Tobacco Burst

In the pantheon of classic solidbody electric guitars, it doesn’t get any more classic than a Les Paul with P-90 pickups. We present to you the Gibson Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90. Your fingers will fly on this guitar’s silky, rosewood fingerboard and Plek’d frets. Fitted with a pair of Gibson’s legendary P-90 pickups, this ’Paul growls with the big cats. All the classic elements are here: carved maple top over solid mahogany, trapezoid fingerboard inlays, and creamy fingerboard binding with signature Gibson “nibs” — even the ones you don’t see, like handwired circuitry with Orange Drop caps. And you’ll enjoy effortless playability courtesy of a pleasantly chunky vintage ’50s profile neck. If you’ve been wanting a modern Les Paul with a stout neck feel, P-90s, and premium appointments, Sweetwater has the one you’ve been waiting for. Take a walk on the classic side with the Gibson Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90.

The pinnacle.

Les Paul's are ubiquitous. I've owned and played many guitars and amplifiers…chasing my tone. I took a step back to 1950s. After spending thousands of $$$ in custom made. I've discovered…a good Les Paul is truly peerless.

Les Paul 50's standard with P-90s

By James Jessup from Charlottesville, VA on May 8, 2023 Music Background: professional musician, mostly Pedal Steel Guitar, from '74 to '82. Just a hobbyist since then.

Spring of 1970 I was making the two hour drive to Chuck Levin's in Maryland with a pocketful of cash from playing bass in a frat party band for the prior year. I had a gold top Les Paul deluxe in mind and from what I knew they came with P-90 pickups. I was surprised to find out that by the spring of 70 they now had mini-humbuckers in them which I'd never heard of. I had no where near enough experience to know the difference in sound from the P-90 but soon had my Dad's wood chisels out installing Gibson humbuckers as that was what my guitar hero's at the time had. I wish I'd kept that guitar as in spite of my butchery it was a good guitar.
I don't name my instruments but if I did this one would be called 'Total Impulse' purchase in an effort to relive what I missed out on above. I looked through the four available when I first got the Sweetwater notice on these guitars and bought the one that I thought had the most interesting top. I'm quite happy with the guitar, love the look, the feel of the neck profile, the set up and the tone.
Gibson does have a manufacturing miss that I find quite surprising, the bridge pup has extremely wimpy springs holding it in position so anytime you rest your hand on it, it sinks into the top making a noise. I've screwed it down some so it's more stable and raised the pole pieces as well as lowered the neck pup but they are still out of balance volume wise. This should be an easy fix the first time I change strings but find it hard to believe the folks at Gibson didn't notice this before bringing this to market. That's why I only gave it a 4 1/4 instead of a 5.
