Gibson AFD

By Tomas from Norway on April 9, 2024 Music Background: Guitar Hero

it has a fater neck, like the 58 first standard.
i like it but i have long fingers, its a bit bigger than the normal gibson necks.
so if you have testet the limted versions before so, this has a diffrent one.

pickups: pretty good i always swaps out the gibsons pickups, this one has a bit more SD pearly Gates feel "tele on steriods" so and cleans up alot better than the SD slash signature pickups. not as raw as the SD slash but more clear.

cool brown case and can make it look like a normal LP :)

Iconic sound

By Sweetwater Customer on March 28, 2024

This guitar has an amazing sound and the finish looks even better in person! It is a well done guitar

My only dislike is the 50s "baseball" style neck, if you aren't use to Les Paul's like myself it can be a little much.

These pick ups great and guys I know that have owned over 25 Les Paul's puts this guitar/pickups in their top 3

Best Les Paul

By Michael Ritchie from HAMDEN, CT on December 12, 2023

You can spend more money on a more expensive model, by why?

This, IMO is the highest leven of a Gibson Les Paul made today. It can do it all for less then models that can't.

Appetite for this Guitar

By Sweetwater Customer from Parts Unknown on September 8, 2023

So I am not one to shoot off quick reviews but will make the exception here. I love this guitar, it's a dream. For context I am historically a single coil American Fender person but really needed some humbucker flexibility to chase some more aggressive tones with overdrive and distortion, and versatility for anything else. So it became a matter of Les Paul time and which one to get. I love the Les Pauls without pickguards, just a great style to me. Then you force me to pick between the zebra pickups and a classic mahogany back vs and black back. Well the Appetite Burst. It's the total Hunter Burst vibe and cool as all heck. So it's a beautiful guitar, completely amazing in that sense. But…it plays better than it looks. A day later it's definitely the prize of my pretty spectacular collection that I use for recording.

That is all my 2nd favorite part of the story. The honest to goodness best part of the story is I decided to trek from Illinois to Ft. Wayne to check out the guitars in-person and for the adventure of it all. I'm glad I checked in with my sales engineer Tom Koch that I now feel like I have been working with for around a decade. I'm glad I did, just a genuine guy, helpful for sure, helluva host, and the hospitality and experience of stopping by was 2nd to none and a world. Look, where I am from we go to the Chicago Music Exchange when we want to hit a showroom, was the drive worth it? Thanks to Tom Koch, absolutely. I am grateful and a shoutout to Timothy too who also worked tirelessly on my behalf! I hope to see them again next September!

Best guitar I’ve ever owned………HANDS DOWN!

By Neil from Ventura, Ca on March 27, 2023 Music Background: Big fan.

First of all, this thing's not only the most awesome guitar I've ever played, but it is an amazing piece of art!
The AAA top is a marvel to behold. So 3 dimensional and almost hypnotic.
I'd always been a Strat guy, then I purchased a les Paul Tribute to see if the brand would've grow on me. Well, it did! Big time! I sold the Tribute and pulled the trigger on my Appetite Burst Slash.
This thing is so crunchy and buttery. It has that raspy tone Lp's are known for, yet if I back off the volume a bit, I get a nice clean tone.
I love the chunky neck profile and just all around feel and looks of this beauty.
Many thanks to Grant for not only helping with my purchase, but he's checked in a couple times to see how I'm liking it. A genuinely great guy!

Fabulous

By Ivan on February 9, 2023

This is a fabulous guitar and represents why the original Les Paul Standard is the coolest guitar to own.

I did a full gold upgrade on mine and it looks even better.

Aesthetics aside, the playability is superb.
The pickups are perfect.

Well done. I feel like I own a piece of history.
Mine is not a collection piece and will be played vigorously! :-)

This guitar is amazing in person. Sounds great right out the box. But most important the sweetwater team made my shopping experience go very well , They keep you up to date with whats going on from the time they pick your order till the time they ship your order . I was also giving a call by a sales associate (Corbin) He was very helpful , Even giving me his number for any questions or concerns . I thought that was great . I got my guitar with no problems plays great right out the box of course I had to wait 24 hours to open it not to destroy the finish from being cold but very much worth the wait . I would recommend SWEETWATER.COM To all my freinds as well as people looking for musical instruments and accessories .

To the entire team at SWEETWATER ,

THANKYOU, FOR YOUR SERVICE AND EXCELLENCE !!!

Wish I would not have sold

I bought the limited vermilion burst about a year or so ago and have since sold and I kick myself everyday for it.i miss just opening the beautiful tan leather case with pink fur and the smell of real old fashioned nitrocellulose. pickups sounded killer and it was truly a beast. mine was 11 pounds of dense mahogany and the flame was unreal. the worst part is I sold along with a Martin custom shop and a mesa amp to try out some fenders as I was very curious about the dark side.. ive been a gibson guy for a decade and always wanted to know what a Strat was like.. mainly because of the unearthly tones of SRV who I still have to admit managed to record the greatest guitar tone of all time in his cover of little wing. anyhow after trying a couple Strats and other various pieces of gear ive got to say Gibsons got everyone else beat. Every other brand is too busy trying to be innovative and come up with a better mousetrap.. well it doesn't exist.. Real Nitro finishes and Compound dovetails will always be the best way to build a guitar. I see other brands trying to justify the bolt on neck and how it doesn't make a difference... yeah okay buddy trust me it does.. same with the finish. theres nothing like the feel and smell of real nitro. Also the case was incredible beats the heck out of the fender case which looks more like a gun case than a guitar case. Anyhow I really hope fender has a revival similar to gibson in 2020 and starts building the way Leo did pre cbs with 1950s style manufacturing. Also they need to reduce their skus way too many models its ridiculous. More companies should follow Gibsons lead. #play authentic

By Steve Johnson from Wyoming, MI on September 16, 2022

I've been playing for over 40 years, own an SG but never wanted a Les Paul until I reviewed this one. I bought a J45 in the early 70's, needless to say it wasn't built very well. So I never bought another Gibson. After buying this one I've turned completely around and impressed with the quality, workmanship and playability. love it!

Wow, just amazing!

As a lifelong guitar player with now 10 guitars, including 3 Les Pauls, this Gibson Slash LP one really stands out! For one, specific to my guitar, the flame is really alive and feels like it's moving. Two, also in my case, this Les Paul is really light - 8.2 lbs - lighter than any of my Strats!

Three, the tone is incredible and neck is just right. Yes, the pickups are a little hotter than my other Les Pauls but also easily controlled with the volume knob (or by turning down the gain :) I love the fact that there's no push/pull knobs - hated that in my 2016 Standard, and the neck is super comfortable - not a large 50s but also not a super slim 60s, it's somewhere in the middle.

Thanks to Bob Furlong for helping me secure this specific Appetite burst immediately and for going the extra mile always like making sure I'm sure on pre-order lists for new releases, and let's face, making sure I get my fix of Bit-O-Honey! :)

Rock on brothers...

Slash guitar AWESOME!!!

By Randy C. from Florida on April 17, 2022

I have played a lot of Les Paul guitars over the years but this one is definitely special, the feel, the look, and the tone is second to none, I had Sweetwater do a complete set-up before it left the store thanks to the suggestion of Nick Grawcock my Sales Rep for the last 6 years, it was worth the extra money, this guitar plays superb, I have tried numerous Custom Shop Gibson's that didn't play this good, Sweetwater Rocks! Thanks Nick

Slash Standard LP Appetite Amber

By Brett Lapierre from Othello, WA on January 24, 2022 Music Background: Amateur/Hobbyist

First of all, I would like to thank Rob Kramer and his team for always caring about what is important to me, these guys are THE best. This is only the second American made Gibson Les Paul I have ever owned in my 56 years, the other is a 2017 Tribute Gold Top. I wanted to have at least one Elite guitar in my collection, and as always Sweetwater made it possible for me to do that. I love this guitar, and the workmanship is outstanding. I have never played an LP with a 50's neck profile, I never thought I would like it but I do. This guitar is beautiful with an amazing top, and the tone is fantastic. I love everything about it and Sweetwater provides many payment options that make it possible for a regular Joe to afford to own a guitar fit for a legend. Thanks again, I will be back for more later!!

Gibson Les Paul Standard Slash Appetite Burst

By Jason Yost from Hazleton, PA on January 22, 2022

This guitar is everything you could wish for in a Les Paul especially if your a Slash fan fit and finish and playability are awesome… The new Gibson under JC at the helm are the best made Gibsons in the last two decades for sure. Gibson is definitely back…

Slash LP delivers!

By JC from Arizona on December 31, 2021

After playing a new 60s Les Paul Standard for a few months, I started to look at the 50s models. The Slash Standard LP has many of the 50s appointments and so I was on the hunt for one. I worked with my Sweetwater Sales guy and we found one with a nice top and that weighed about 8 1/2 pounds. Getting a LP under 9lbs was important to me and I'm glad that I was picky; this one is very resonant and easy to play for long periods of time.

The Slashbucker pickups sound great to me. I love the neck carve and the guitar is all that I could hope for. I did add the included pick guard as I think Les Pauls look better with it on. The Appetite Amber top is beautiful and the figuring of the wood is very nice.

I think that the Slash LP is at the top of the production line and is probably as good as it gets without spending considerably more money for a Reissue or Custom.

Gibson Slash Les Paul Standard

By Sweetwater Customer on December 10, 2021 Music Background: I’ve sang in working bands since the 80’s. I enjoy collecting guitars, amps and electric pianos. I play guitar and piano at home for my own enjoyment.

This is an amazing guitar!!! I have had a few Gibsons over the years and the quality was hit or miss. I bought a Les Oaul Traditional two months ago and absolutely loved it. I had been a PRS addict for the last few years and had several ORS Guitars, the Les Paul surprised me with how good it was. The $1,999 Gibson was as good as my $5,000 PRS, I played it more and really enjoyed it.

When I got the chance to get the Slash Les Paul I had to do it. I was hoping it was as good as the Traditional and it turned out to be even better. As the owner of PRS 10 Too guitars I couldn't believe how beautiful the Appetite Burst Les Paul was. It is stunning!

When I picked it up and played it felt and sounded as good as it looked. Such a solid guitar with a nice chunky neck and so much raw power coming from the pickups yet they maintain clarity. You can hear every note in a chord, it's a beautiful sound.

The guitar is so resonate that when you play you feel the notes through your hands and body of the guitar. It really adds a whole new level of feel to playing, bending and vibrato are so easy, you can be so expressive playing this guitar.

I seriously recommend this guitar. I have a lot of guitars, a lot of expensive guitars and they pretty much sit or hang on the wall now. This guitar is my Number 1.

Gibson Slash AFD Les Paul

By Dallas Sevison on June 3, 2021

My sales rep Jozy (one of the best guys there) found me the perfect one I was looking for. I haven't had a Les Paul for a long time, the stories are out there. But I decided to take a chance on Gibson under the new management, and boy am I glad I did! The fit and finish is first rate! The sound and playability is right up there with my more expensive Knaggs guitars.
I consider this one of the best purchases I've made in a long time.

By Ross Tesiero from San Diego on June 2, 2021 Music Background: 50 trying to be 16

So totally happy to hold this guitar. My dream guitar is here.

Love the sweetwater site, I was able to study the various flame tops and selected exactly the one I wanted. Little advice, if you are getting a 50s standard you are signing up for heavy. It's part of the sound. Don't shy away from a guitar over 8lbs. I was drooling over the beautiful 9.5 and 10 pounders. Seems people are avoiding the heavy ones which often look really amazing. Mine is 9lbs. The nice beefy neck is a pleasure for my big hands and the sounds this guitar creates are quite truly sweet.

Buying online is tough and picking this up and feeling it will reassure you. Plays so smooth, time disappears... Had to justify it, its more than the standards and not a trivial amount to spend. I plugged in every guitar I have and tried all the combos through my Vox Tube amp. Gonna be hard to give my older guitars some love with this sweetheart.

And its stunning, american made- in case you don't know you always get a photo with an LP from the person who is literally hand creating it for you. Pretty cool to see.

The case is a beauty, the locking tuners are there to use! No issues, maybe a tiny fret buzz I can adjust for. Case is sweet. Strings are good, I may put lighter ones on. Funny thing, it came in tune, maybe only one string needed a tiny adjust.

2021 Gibson USA Slash Standard Appetite Amber

By Steve Y from Northern California on April 26, 2021 Music Background: Playing since 1962 -all styles- semi pro

Adam Cesarz (extension 1700) is my sales contact at Sweetwater. Never anything but stellar service with him. Never any hype.
I've had everything from crude partsotele's I assembled, to a couple of used Gibson L5's, and even a used 2012 CS R9 Les Paul, among a variety of PRS up line models. It took me awhile to realize how much sense Les Paul guitars made after trying ES and SG models.
After hefting an off the rack Slash in a store, I realized it was non weight-relieved, and the '50's C neck felt broken in and wonderful.
Plugging it in revealed a very cool honky midrange.

This 2021 Appetite Amber version is exactly the same. I don't want anything else anymore. The unique prominent midrange of these Slash Standards sounds the way I think a Les Paul should sound, and the beefy neck feels even better than my old R9. The frets are a touch bigger so it plays as if my technique is more precise than I remember. That's good for 300 points right there.

The pickups are slightly hotter AlNiCo II Burstbuckers. More windings I'm thinking, because I really like Burstbuckers but am not about to settle for those anymore. These Slash versions have more guts to the sound, while still retaining that AlNiCo II "PAF" character. Articulate and bright, with more sack.

Now -for me- it's gotta be the Slash model. It's that much better than the current Standard '50's, and even with the regular tenon vs the R9 I had, it sounds perfect and sustains like a good Les Paul should. That midrange wallop -and great neck- seals it for me.

The Appetite Amber is beautiful, and the cherry stain mahogany back and neck is traditional and classy. The rosewood fretboard is nice and dark too.
Very versatile Les Paul. The "jazz" sound is there too: country: anything!

As always, Sweetwater never fails to bring overwhelming quality into my studio. This AFD SLASH Les Paul is the most beautiful guitar that I have in my studio now. Sweetwater and all the courteous and professional staff is by far the best in the land. I have had a tough time getting one of these for the fact that they are sold before they even get them off the truck. And when I ordered it on the 8th? It was on my doorstep less than 48hours later. And it was immaculate. You ONLY get this quality of service with Sweetwater. There is not enough stars to rate what they deserve. Thank you so much Sweetwater and everyone that has the honor of working at a USA music factory.

Georgeous guitar that plays like butter. Big beefy 59 neck that is great for us bigger guys. If there was one con to owning this guitar, it would be that i have neglected the rest of my collection. My sales engineer Paul was great through the entire process and i cant wait to do business again.

The most beautiful that my eyes have seen. excellent Gibson work, great sound and build quality. thanks to the sweetwater staff they are the best.

Just perfect!

By Laurent on August 11, 2020

The team did a great job. I ordered the Slash LP and received it in perfect condition and very quickly. The inspection was carried out very seriously since I did not detect any defect on the guitar as much on the aesthetics as on the sound. The tracking of my package was done with professionalism. Considering the price of this type of guitar, it's reassuring to have received it in impeccable condition. Upon purchase, the guitar was sent to the carrier that day and was shipped immediately. In short, I have nothing to complain about except to advise you on this very reliable site that I have known thanks to word of mouth. Thanks again to the whole team.

Lea Paul Sweetness

By Anthony Tavernier from San Diego, Ca. on August 7, 2020 Music Background: I was in my first band in 1967, when I was 9yrs old, and haven’t stopped. Now I’m a songwriter in California under TavernierFleer, still going strong with no end in sight...yay music!

I recently purchased the Gibson Slash Les Paul Standard- Appetite Amber from the crew at Sweetwater and I have this to say: I have never had a better experience buying an instrument in my entire 50 plus years of being a musician. Sales engineer Mr. Jeff Jent was truly a gem and an excellent gentleman. He was on top of every detail from day one and still, even after my happy cup hath spilled over. The guitar came in perfect, immaculate, playable condition and I must admit I have never touched a better Les Paul in my life, (and I have fondled a lot of them over the years). Everything exceeded my expectations right down to an early delivery. I was so impressed that I went ahead and ordered the 50's American Telecaster and saw the whole, beautiful experience flawlessly repeated. I would highly recommend the Sweetwater experience to any and all without hesitation, and, indeed, already have.
Thank you all at Sweetwater for your exceptional expertise and especially to Mr. Jeff Jent for his attention to detail and really pleasant manner throughout this accommodation.
Yours very sincerely.

I'm speechless, the amount of work MrJeff Weinstein put to deliver a 120% customer satisfaction is unimaginable from the proper consultation to the follow up calls just to ensure that my requests/specs where given a top priority is just surreal. Tonal Bliss, Superb build quality.

By James Dubin from Wonder Lake, IL on May 19, 2020 Music Background: Metal, Hard and Progressive rock.

A shout out to Pat Weaver my sales engineer for the excellence in service and sales the past several years. I purchased this Les Paul mainly for the finish but when I plugged it in was floored. The build quality is superior. The neck comfortable for larger hands. The electronics never make my amps shriek like my studio les Paul does. Once you plug in, it's hours before you can put it down. I blindly purchased it solely off the specs without actually trying it and suggest you do also. You won't be disappointed. A bargain if you're considering a custom shop model and to my understanding, a 58 or 59 replica minus the Slash signature status. Moreover, a perfect instrument for any high gain tube amps. I have a VH4, TC100 and Marshall code 25. All purchased here as well. The only thing that falls short on this guitar is the time the owner has to escape reality. Gibson delivered a grand slam with this one. Contact Pat at extension 1333. He will treat you like royalty.

Demo Slash

By MrTone from Charlotte, North Carolina on October 26, 2022 Music Background: Retired Guitar Tech

Purchased this guitar as a Demo model. A customer return. When I first opened the case and picked up the guitar it smelled like sweat. The person who bought this guitar had changed the factory strings and lowered the string height and the pickups way too low. They also put too much relief in the neck. Not a deal breaker. The pickup selector switch would not stay in the neck position. After a close inspection I noticed the switch tip was making contact with the switch nut not letting the switch lock into position. Removing the switch tip would let the switch lock into position. Did some research on line and this seems to be a problem with some Les Pauls. Gibson did not route the switch pocket deep enough to let the switch protrude thru the body enough to keep the switch tip from making contact with the side of the nut. Contacted SW Tech to let them know of the problem so they could let Gibson know of the issue. Tech offered a new switch, but the switch is not the problem it is the route. So, I declined the offer. Talked to my sales engineer and we reached an agreement. After a good setup with a set of EB Power Slinkys tuned down a half step and the switch problem fixed this guitar came to life. I almost sent it back but glad I did not. Plays and sounds good now and the smell is gone after a good cleaning. It is a keeper now. Be aware if you buy a Demo guitar it may not be set to factory specs.

Bucket List Guitar!

I've wanted one of these ever since I saw GnR Live at the Ritz. It was on MTV's Headbanger's Ball! That'll show a little age for ya!
I Love this guitar! I got a light one. Somewhere around 8lbs. The top , neck, and back all look amazing! The top drastically dances, like amber colored

I wanted to love it.

By Sean Z from Westerville, OH on January 4, 2022 Music Background: Hobbiest

I wanted to love this guitar. The weight was an amazin 8 lbs and the top was beautiful. However Gibsons quality control being what it is. I found binding that had been shaved too low leaving a ridge you could run your finger on around most of the body and dryed drips of too much laquer. The said thing is I have also purchased a couple of Epiphone Les Pauls this year and they were flawless. I really love Les Pauls and SGs, but with Gibsons hit and miss quality, I think I'll stick with Epiphones and Fenders.
