Gibson Custom Les Paul Special Double Cut Figured Maple Top - Cobra Burst VOS Reviews
What if you took the sought-after style and features of Gibson's "student-level" double cuts of the '50s and '60s and rebuilt them into a premium Custom Shop instrument? You might end up with something that resembles the Gibson Custom Les Paul Special Double Cut Figured Top. Choice electronics — Custombucker Alnico III PAF pickups fed into high-grade CTS pots — equip this guitar for classic blues to red-blooded rock 'n' roll. Tastefully aged nickel hardware adorn a beautifully figured maple-capped bound mahogany body and rosewood-clad Slim Taper mahogany neck in this one-of-a-kind double cut, made all the more irresistible by a paper-thin VOS aged nitrocellulose finish. Top Hat knobs, kidney-style Grover tuners, and an ABR-1 Tune-o-matic bridge give the Les Paul Special Double Cut Figured Top flair and performance in all the right places.

Has real BITE!
This guitar kicks ***!! I was in love the moment I opened the case, but then it just got better once I plugged it in.
The DC should stand for double crunchy. These PAF styled custom Buckers are pretty darn aggressive. Something else you'll want to know if you're considering a purchase… The VOS treatment applied to these is applied to every single aspect of the guitar, right down to the very last screw and the strings. There is no shine or "new guitar" luster. But that's one of the things I love about it most. By the way… Every single player that walks by it absolutely positively must pick it up and check it out, and every single player digs it. At least that's my experience
YES!!
love this guitar!! its so resonant, warm, and punchy!
couldnt be happier!! shout out to my sales rep Chris Nunley for the sales assist and just being an all around great dude!
Gibson Custom Les Paul Special Double Cut - Cobra Burst
Much like Mr. Jona T, I bought my guitar (S/N 09697) from Sweetwater as well. I am assuming his is the Cobra Burst as well...probably S/N 09698 which had a beautiful top as Sweetwater had two of them in stock Late March/Early April...he beat me to it (smile). These Special Double Cuts are absolutely wonderful guitars. I've got five other Les Paul guitars but right now I can't stop playing this one as it feels so nice in my hands and sounds great.
So if you are considering one ya better snatch up the one they have in stock right now!!! As always...Sweetwater and their staff (shout out to Mr. Jim Watson) do everything right!!
Gibson Custom Les Paul Special Double Cut Figured Maple Top - Cobra Burst VOS
VERY Nice guitar.in fact probably a "little" nicer than i expected. Might take some encouragement to gig with it. i was blessed enough to be able to break my personal rule of buying a guitar priced over $3K to gig with, so i can't look surprised, huh? Okay, so about the guitar. (this is my 4th LP, amongst other models, so i have a pretty good personal basis to compare with)
First, i own a '77 Spec DC, bought it new, so i love the body style already, that one is now family it has been around so long. and the electronics on this one are almost exact as the LP 60th R9 i have. the diff? I was told these PUPs are potted, i haven't verifier that, the R9's custom buckers are not. But honestly i can't really tell diff sonically (this is a bit brighter guitar anyway however, not like my Spec DC w/P90's bright, but brighter than my other two PAF LP's - one w/Cust Buckers, and a standard that had BB's and now its w/Jimmy Wallace PAF's). but everything else, wiring, bumble bees, CTS, etc.... all same.
So in a nutshell, same electronics as the R9, body and neck of a Spec DC, thinner 60's neck, real fast. custom shop build. awesome finish, nice case. feels like a $4k-$5k guitar. And sounds, well, pretty darn sweet. And James M.'s support from Sweetwater is the best! So 4.5 and why not 5 stars? well...
i am not a fan of the VOS 'light aging', i didn't care for it on my anniversary LP either. ( i really hate the Murph Lab stuff, it's like paying up to twice the price for jeans with holes in them) i get it that is kind of nit picky. And I kind of was hoping for a carved top Spec DC like the ones from the late 2000's, but i am very happy with this. Now i just have to convince myself to leave my regular player at home and take this one!
Can't say if this is right for you? but it is a VERY FINE instrument. so if it is your cup of tea, you will be well served.
Gibson Classic Rock Machine!
I bought this guitar from Sweetwater, it is fantastic. A true beauty from the Gibson Custom line.
I am now torn between this and my les paul. I love the weight of the special. It plays like an older guitar, sounds somewhat vintage as the humbuckers are customized by Gibson for this guitar. All the details from the late 50s and early 60s are there in spades.
