Epiphone Kirk Hammett "Greeny" 1959 Les Paul Standard Electric Guitar - Greeny Burst Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Mahogany Body, Maple Top, Mahogany Neck, Indian Laurel Fingerboard, and 2 Humbucking Pickups - Greeny Burst

Complete with Gibson USA pickups, the Epiphone Kirk Hammett “Greeny” 1959 Les Paul Standard is Epiphone’s spin on the legendary 1959 Les Paul played by Peter Green, Gary Moore, and Kirk Hammett. Just like Gibson’s “Greeny” re-creation, this guitar is a spot-on replica of a 1959 “Burst” Les Paul, sporting a mahogany body, pickguard-free maple top, and AAA flame maple veneer. The neck comprises a robust 1-piece hunk of mahogany carved into a Custom Greeny profile — a robust, rounded over shape, topped with a sleek slab of Indian laurel. And most important of all, the Epiphone Kirk Hammett “Greeny” 1959 Les Paul comes equipped with a pair of Gibson USA Greenybucker pickups, with the same quacky “magic” out-of-phase middle position found on the original “Greeny.” From the smallest aesthetic details to the very feel in your hands, the Epiphone Kirk Hammett “Greeny” 1959 Les Paul is a truly loving tribute to one of the most iconic Les Pauls in music history.

JAMMIN' WITH GREENY

By Clayton from Massachusetts on April 1, 2024

The best guitar I have hands down, I have 3 Epiphone '59's that are hotrodded, and a 335 hotrodded with Duncan '59 pup's. I love Greeny so much I have another one on the way. You guys are the best

GREENY IS THE BEST

By Clayton Phelps from Massachusetts on April 1, 2024 Music Background: hobby then 15 years in a Praise band (1988-2002_

I already commented but I whipped a short video up to post. Greeny get's more than 5 stars from me. I've had all the Big $$ guitars back in the mid 90's including Gibson Historic Les Pauls and USA Gibsons, many of them. Fast forward to 2012 when I started digging in to up my playing level and it's been Epiphones due to retirement SS income now. I have 3 Epi '59's that I hotrodded with Dimarzios and Duncan pup's and they're great guitars. I sold an Epi Slash Appetite to put $$ down on a Greeny and have payments, when I got it I was blown away with the neck feel, the tone, resonance and vibe so much I sold my Epi 50's STD to put $$ down on another Greeny and that will be here tomorrow. These guitars have the vibe of my past Custom Shop Gibson Les Pauls. Thank you Sweetwater for being the best.

YESSIR, GREENY GETS MORE THAN 5 STARS FROM ME

By Clayton Phelps from Winchendon, MA on April 1, 2024 Music Background: Hobbie, then A Praise band for 15 years, now a paid player.

I've been playing guitar off and on for decades, I've owned many Gibson USA's and Custom Shop Gibsons, mostly Les Pauls since 1993-'94 up t0 2019. I really started digging in in 2012 and got good enough to be paid to play, just me and backing tracks, no cover stuff, all instrumental.I semi-retired so my budget was Epiphone at this point, I've had maybe 40 or so since 2012, buy, sell, buy sell, I currently own 3Epi '59's that I hotrodded with Dimarzios and Duncan pup's. I got a Greeny last week and was so blown away, definitely the finest Epiphone I've had. I love it so much I bought another one, it'll be here tomorrow. I can't put it down, the neck profile, the feel, the resonance, the tone, I swear it is close to the last 3 Custom Shop Les Pauls I had in 2019 (I sold them because I worried too much about them at a gig). I know tone, feel and inspiration and Greeny has it all in spades.

Get this while you can!!

By Ryan from Michigan on March 29, 2024 Music Background: 25 years playing in punk rock bands

I have been playing guitar for 25 years plus. I have owned many guitars. At the moment I own a 1988 Gibson Les Paul Standard, a 2021 Gibson SG 61 reissue, a Gretsch White Penguin, a 2022 Gibson Les Paul Junior, and 2023 Epiphone Billie Joe Armstrong Les Paul Junior.

I was on the fence on whether I should get this Epiphone Les Paul Greeny primarily because it was around $. THAT IS ALOT FOR AN EPIPHONE! I have owned probably 20 Epiphone guitars since I have been playing. This Greeny not only passes them all but stands toe to toe with my 1988 Gibson Les Paul Standard with no problem and all the other guitars I have at the moment for that matter.

I did my homework on the Epi Greeny. I read reviews about QC issues. All the issues I read, I could personally fix within about an hour. So I decided to take the plunge. I found a Demo model of the Epiphone Greeny Les Paul here on Sweetwater. As always I got the guitar within two days after I ordered it.

THIS GUITAR CAME PERFECTLY SETUP! The neck feels like the neck on my 1988 Gibson Les Paul Standard. The binding is awesome. Even the dots on the top of the neck look like Gibson dot markers. The pickups are AMAZING! Even that middle out of phase sound is FANTASTIC. I shouldn't even have to talk about the open book headstock. If you have been following Epiphone for a while, you know it looks way better than the old Epi headstocks. The electronics are amazing and the switch doesn't feel like it is going to break in my hands. I tuned this guitar yesterday and have played it all day today and the Grover tuners still have it in tune.

I understand $ is a lot of money for an Epi. I get it. BUT YOU GET A LOT OF GUITAR!

Way to go Epiphone

By Roberto Saavedra from Jacksonville FL on March 19, 2024 Music Background: Retired pro

I saw this guitar at the local guitar store and of course felt inclined to play it. I was blown away! Amazing tone, fill, and it actually stayed in tune the whole time I play it. Now I'm really wondering how Gibson version sounds, probably better, probably the same or probably between both some people will prefer the epiphone's tone. But I've to say, this is for pros, amateurs, etx

GREENY is the best!

By James Jacob from EAGLE POINT, OR on February 2, 2024

When I first saw Greeny I placed my order. Soon afterwards I received my Epiphone Greeny from Sweetwater. I would like to say that this guitar is more that I anticipated. When I ordered I had the the bone nut upgrade and setup done and I'm very glad I did. This guitar is perfect from the factory. Great job by guitar techs at Sweetwater! I like everything, the weight, string height, action, finish. It comes with a hard shell case with hot pink lining. I'm not a guitar pro I must admit but a very good deal for the money. I've watched reviews on Utube were this guitar was called overly expensive. I think its a great price. Thanks to the great customer service from Sweetwater! Your the best in the business!

I Really Like It...

By Scott Antwine from El Paso, TX on December 13, 2023 Music Background: Recreational

I picked this up the day it came out, and I couldn't be happier with it. The flamed top is very nice paired with a flat finish. The neck is chunky but doesn't feel too thick by any means. I did not like the neck's finish because it felt semi-sticky. I use 1500 grit on almost every guitar neck I buy, so I am probably biased. To me, the best part is the pickups. I really like the neck and bridge in almost every way. I thought the cleans were clear, and the gritty tones sounded great. Obviously, the middle "Greeny" position is the big question, and true to lore, it has an interesting nasally twang that could make for some entertaining living room exploration. I can't tell you if it's worth its cost, but I think it is a great guitar.

Fantastic!!!

By Zachary Myers from Mount Zion, IL on December 13, 2023

I probably just got lucky, but this is the loudest electric guitar acoustically I have ever played. It really rings out. When strummed it almost rivals an acoustic. It sustains forever! It will sustain for around 30 seconds then I just stop it. This guitar is very well made. Fit and finish is impeccable. I really like the satin finish. I would pay more for this one if I had to. I really recommend getting it Pleked too. I did and will do it again on every new guitar I purchase from Sweetwater from now on! This is the best electric I have. Even my Washburn N4 Authentic doesn't sustain like this. The N4 is over twice as expensive too. Overall I am much more than just satisfied, I am out of my mind thrilled!!!

Outstanding guitar…Kudos to Gibson/Epi !

By Rusty Hayes from Red Oak Iowa on December 12, 2023 Music Background: Playing for 35 years

I was able to get my hands on one of these a month before release from a direct Gibson contact. Out of the box fit and finish was perfect. Cesar at Gibson hit this one out of the park going with the Gibson OEM Headstock/body true to the Les Paul 59 spec. Quality switches pickups and hardware. The Gibson Greeny pickups are phenomenal! I highly recommend this guitar as it hits far above the $ price point.

Greeny Epiphone

By Hubert from Phoenix on December 11, 2023 Music Background: been playing 50 plus years. Toured, recorded, retired

This the best Epiphone I have played. Quality harkens back to my first really good guitar a smoky red Casino from the Kalamazoo factory. At that time Gibson's and Epi's were built in the Parson street location in Kalamazoo.
While this is clearly manufactured in China, the quality of the build is flawless. Gibson Greeny pickups, Switchcraft components.
It plays really well requiring no set up from me at all. Action and fretwork great right out of the case. Sound acoustically and amplified are great, very resonant & Clear. I have two Custom Shop Les Paul's a R9 and R7, I would not hesitate to gig with this guitar.
It is epiphone- not a nitrocellulose lacquer finish Gibson, the Maple is real, but the flame is a veneer. Fretboard is not Rosewood but mine is dark and durable. I love the way it feels and looks- the open book headstock with the Epiphone logo is really great.
As mentioned above this is a great guitar, yes a little $pendy, but it's Greeny!
I bought mine here at sweetwater, it has a nice flamey top and perfect 8.7 pounds.
Been playing it every night, since received it.
this one is a keeper.

One more guitar for Kirk!

By SamboneRocknRoll from Samsterdam on December 11, 2023 Music Background: I don't even play guitar anymore!

Hey, he's paid his dues! An affordable Epiphone copy that doesn't even look like the Greeny guitar at all. Need I say, 'affordable'. I actually dig the guitar. Should've been a COA or something with Kirk's name. Who cares!?! I didn't have enough to afford the meet and greet or the next level Greeny. Over $, eh. $, eh. Not the worst price ever. A lot of people are going to be complaining about this and dogging it. Hey, I have one, I wanted one and that's all there's to it. It's cool. At least it doesn't have any relic marks anywhere. The Gibson headstock should've had the Gibson truss rod cover. But it's an Epiphone. Oh well. Get it if you want this guitar!

Great Build, Sound and Value

By Robert Dragich from San Francisco, CA on December 11, 2023

I received the Epiphone Greeny Les Paul three days ago and it has exceeded all my expectations. The fit, finish and setup are all perfect and the playability is exceptional. I'm normally a P90/single coil sort of guy, but the Greeny has won me over in a way that no other humbucker-equipped guitar has been able to do. The Greenybuckers are warm and clear and the variety of tones, particularly in the mid position, seems endless. And the rounded C-shaped neck with a satin finish makes playing the Greeny a breeze. Some have said that it seems like a lot of money for an import guitar. I maintain that it's a lot of guitar for the money. During decades of buying guitars, I have never purchased one with the build quality, sound and playability of the Epiphone Greeny in its price range.

Well Made with Some Imprefections

By Guitar Quackery from NYC on January 3, 2024 Music Background: Guitar Technician & Luthier

The guitar is definitely well made. In fact, all Epiphone Les Paul guitars are well made, nowadays, but this once seems to go a couple of degrees higher in quality.

There are some imperfection, however.

My biggest objection is the nut, which was not quite well made on the one that I bought.

On the positive side, the frets were leveled at the factory, which is not something we see on Epiphone guitars.

Feel free to watch the review video for details.

This is a game changer

By Robert mosley from Tyrone, pa on December 15, 2023 Music Background: 20 years experienced guitarist

If you ever played epiphone custom les pauls ,let alone gibsons les les pauls as equal . This guitar will have you questioning reality. $ is a big price tage to pay for an epiphone ,whilst you can go get a gibson les paul for the same price ,but be bearer of good news that the Chinese factory has out done them selves on this particular model lea paul . The standard appears to have been set high in regards to epiphone ,and I am a proud owner of this beautiful greeny . And you should be to ,join the wagon ,and enjoy the craftsmanship of the new open book epiphone !

Good guitar- but needed some work

By David Stephens from Zimmerman, MN on April 22, 2024

I bought this guitar because I have always wanted the out of phase tone on a Les Paul and did not want to modify any of my existing guitars. It does "that" sound very well.

However, the guitar did not play well out of the box and that is why I gave it 3 stars. The frets were VERY rough; so much that when bending the strings it felt like a very cheap import guitar. It required a good amount of fret polishing with some fine steel wool. Since the guitar does not come set up, I definitely expected the need to adjust the action and pickup height, but did not expect the frets to be in such rough shape. The actual fret ends are good and were not sticking out at all.

Afterwards, I oiled the dry Laurel fretboard, adjusted the action and pickup height and it is quite a bit better now and sounds like a proper Les Paul. Does it sound as good as a custom shop? No, but it gets you close for what you pay. I have other Epiphone's in my collection (higher end signature models and entry level ones) and none of them had an issue with the frets like this guitar. It's a good guitar now, but took some extra work to get it in playable condition.

I don’t know….

By Tim from SW Florida on March 11, 2024

Aesthetically the top and headstock are a big negative. The open-book Gibson headstock with 'Epiphone' in script makes it look like a Chibson.

Indian Laurel vs Rosewood. Ya gotta be kidding me-especially for this price.

However, if the frets are seated and leveled properly and the nut is perfectly cut, it should play fine.

Hardware is garbage. Once again for $ it's not asking too much for a Tone Pros bridge and stop bar.
