1956 Les Paul Murphy lab

By val on November 24, 2023

Outstanding guitar, in tone and setup was just right from factory, frets and neck feel great when playing the neck size is very comfortable and easy to move around, the P90 PuP's sound really good tone and no buzz or static like single coils.

Gibson Custom Shop 1956 Les Paul- 2023 Murphy Lab.

By Victor from Clarkston, MI on June 6, 2023

A very nice 2023 Gibson LP Murphy Lab R6. Gibson's quality standards continue to improve. Murphy Lab did a great job with the Ultra light aging with overall pleasing aesthetics. A few noticeable differences is the beautiful double Gold coloring and a lowered Gibson headstock logo like they had in the 1950's. The advertised chunky neck has the rolled neck binding that has a great broken in feel that is very comfortable. Not a Baseball bat size neck feel at all. The P90's, 7.83K neck and 7.86K bridge sound great.

Everyone needs a '56 Gold Top - this is the one!

First of all, the ultra light aging done by the Murphy Lab looks and feels amazing. The finish checking is stunning and it straight up looks like it was built in 1956. They nailed it.

Frets are perfect and I was able to set the action really low without any buzzing or issues whatsoever - a testament to how well this was built. It really plays like a dream.

The P90's are perfect too - like single coils on steroids - everything you want a P90 to sound like - Clean, chimey, articulate, but also warm, fat, and searing. They cut really well in a mix, especially on the bridge pickup into an overdriven amp. They really sing.

It's such a beautiful instrument in every way.

Been using this the last year gigging and it hasnt disappointed. From jazz to blues to country and pop, p90s have your back. Aging isnt over the top, super tasteful. Gold finish is right on, neck is perfect. Just a killer les paul

Dreams Do Come True

100% Hands Down, the BEST guitar I own. I have several Custom Shop guitars in my collection, and none compare to this awesome specimen of a reissue. A true classic that is worth more than what Gibson charges for these.

Aged to perfection

By Sweetwater Customer on May 12, 2022

The aged gold finish is immaculate, great lacquer checking. Guitar sounds fantastic with p90s and the nylon nut, makes you wonder why gibson ever changed the formula. Setup and playability were excellent. Original style case is a work of art as well.
Fret end finishing, rolled edges to fretboard are very good.
Only complaints (very minor) would be that some of the rust/oxidation on the hardware was a little over the top, and that the nylon nut was very crudely finished with a file.

A+ service from my sales engineer as always.

Superb Les Paul with awesome retro vibe and tone!

Excellent guitar! When I received at the action was set a little high to my liking, easy adjustment. Neck was set up perfectly has not needed any adjustments despite a new tropical home. The checking on the finish still has not completely hardened, so it continues to age very slightly. This has is been a fascinating process to watch. This is my first Gibson with P 90s or Murphy Lab. I am not disappointed in the slightest, similar in noisiness to the old strat pickups of the 50s. But there's no mistaking it's a Les Paul, a much fatter tone than a strat. What I like best about it is the fuzz/hum really sounds amazing through a tube amp with no effects or a little reverb. It sounds like an old guitar should sort of like the buzz of an old radio. Well exactly like an old radio and it sounds very warm and pleasant. So I love it for blues. I tend to like humbucker's for heavier sounds but this will hold up cranked HUGE! Amazing cranked! I would just recommend a noise gate and a fast volume control on your playing hand. You can not be disappointed, excellent craftsmanship!! Not quite the same level of fretboard woods (aesthetically speaking)that they were using 15 years ago or more but, with the pleking they do now it just plays like butter. Enjoy this guitar it's worth every penny. Sweetwater also is absolutely the best music gear and guitar dealer period... End of story! Thanks to Randy and team.

Not impressed

By Thomas Blankenship from Houston, TX on November 3, 2022

Guess I just got a lemon. This guitar refuses to stay in tune no matter how I wind the strings, or the string gage. Also the p90's on this one are weak and very brite.
I have a 50's standard p90 gold top that is less than half the cost, and it sounds killer. It also stays in tune.
I regret buying this Murphy lab guitar. For me, a big FAIL.

An expensive disappointment

By Thomas Blankenship from Houston, TX on October 26, 2022

So, I have a 50's standard P90 gold top.
I wanted a more "vintage" appearing representation of the 56 gold top. I thought this Murphy lab 56 would be awesome. Boy was I wrong. First, it won't stay in tune, and the intonation is off. Open strings become sharp when fretted. I restrung the guitar with my favorite 9's and no change. This should have been strobed and spot on before it left the factory.
Next, the tone. Played this thru a 5150 half stack, a Marshall valvestate 2-12, and a Fender 2-12.
No matter how I adjust these amps, the guitar is very brute and shrill sounding. At less than HALF the cost, my 50's standard gold top blows the Murphy lab gold top away. Not to mention it stays in tune and is in perfect intonation.
Did I just get a lemon? Are all these high dollar Murphy lab guitars inferior to the standard offerings from Gibson? I don't know. But at this point, I am unimpressed with this very expensive albatross.
Cant say I would recommend buying one of these before playing it first.
