Gibson Les Paul Junior - Ebony Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Mahogany Body, Mahogany Neck, Rosewood Fretboard, and 1 Single-coil Pickup - Ebony

Since 1954, the Gibson Les Paul Junior has added a cool, straightforward vibe to the world of rock music. Over half a century later, the Jr. is still a favorite among players everywhere. It’s no coincidence that leagues of players got their start with this guitar — and come back to it time and time again. Made from solid mahogany and finished in classic nitrocellulose lacquer, this Junior gives you an impressively rich and detailed tone. Its vintage ’50s neck is a pleasure to play, and you just can’t beat the sound of a P-90 pickup. Under the hood, the control assembly is handwired with matched potentiometers and Orange Drop capacitors. Get back to basics with the Gibson Les Paul Junior.

Great fun guitar!

I own several Gibson models. This one is my go to. Beauty is in simplicity!

gibson originals 50's style les paul junior

By Joel Porter from Waterboro, ME on April 2, 2024

qc for cosmetics isn't as good as custom shop instruments . But... sound and playability are right up there! I did my only upgrade in the pickup department. The Gibson p90 is really good ,but my personal taste was for an antiquity and it brought this guitar from a 10 to borderline 11! 5 stars

Tone machine

Never would have thought that that this type of guitar would do so much! Just a tone machine that does so much.

Real Easy Guitar

By C. Boyd Woods from 98382 on January 28, 2024 Music Background: Playing, gigging, teaching, noodling for a long time

I had owned a Melody Maker before and thought this would be something like it. I have owned a couple of custom shop guitars also, but this guitar is it's own thing and quite a surprise. Substantial neck, super playable with the best action and response. The whole guitar comes alive and vibrates in your hands. I've owned some super guitars with p90 pickups before - but I really think you need just this one...
The fit and finish feel great, there's nothing like it. I was delighted to find a leather strap in the case, along with a photo of the guitar.
Instantly, it is the no.1 player, all others have taken a backseat. I have never been this happily satisfied with a guitar... until now.

Not the guitar I intended to buy

By Tom from Tennessee on September 8, 2023

I bought this guitar 3 years ago at my local guitar shop in Arizona. I walked in with a plan to buy a 335, and wasn't quite happy with those I played. I knew that I eventually wanted a LPJ, but it wasn't a primary guitar I was looking for. Most of the time, I play in the neck pickup, and I don't (didn't) like black guitars. I saw this one hanging in the shop, and on a whim, I asked to play it. After hearing the first chord, I knew this was the one. A minute later, the salesperson came back and turned up the amp I was playing through. I came home with it, and she's still my mainstay. Even when I plug it straight in my deluxe reverb, I never think I need anything else.

I had some intonation issues when I moved to the south. But I kept moderately adjusting the setup, and now is stable again. I frequently like to play open chords down the neck and have no issues with it.

I have short, stubby fingers and love playing on this neck. Oddly enough, the thin 12 inch radius necks gives me hand cramps. I'm pretty sure I could get on just fine with most necks, I would just need to adjust my grip.

The single pickup on this model is more than sufficient. Using it has forced me to learn to use my volume and tone knobs. Now I hit those first, before using a pedal. And on the LPJ, I keep the tone knob around 5 and kick it up when I want more Paul.

I've bought a few more guitars after this one, and I still come back to the LPJ. The only guitar I thought was a better sound for me was a Gibson Custom 57 Goldtop that was about 4K more.

Gibson Les Paul Junior

Feels like a 50's style neck narrower width and thicker c shape. Dogear p90 has really good tone and sustain. You'd be hard pressed to realize it's not a custom shop instrument. Brown hardshell case has five draw latches. Overall a very nice instrument well worth the money !

Less Really IS More!

By Don S. on February 22, 2023

I love everything about this guitar: the simplicity, the tone, the feel, and the pure rock n' roll attitude it represents. I've got 4 other Les Pauls, including a TV Yellow Les Paul Special, but have still wanted one of these for the longest time. I'm finally glad I quit procrastinating and just bought it.

The tone of the P90 is perfect. I'm actually becoming more of a P90 fan than humbuckers. They are surprisingly versatile.
The neck on this guitar is just right for me. I prefer a 50s shaped neck over a slim taper and this one definitely fits the bill without being too thick. My R8's neck pushes the upper limits in size but this one is much more naturally fitting.

I have a feeling this may soon end up being the most played guitar in my collection.

The Best Juniors Made!

By Dawson from Santa Cruz on January 18, 2023

i have owned the following:
2012 Les paul Junior
2006 Billie joe Les paul junior
2018 Billie Joe Les paul Junior ( of course this one is a different animal )

I recently picked this one up in ebony ( because my 2006 was ebony and it was stolen from me ) and i can say 100% for certain that this les paul junior is better made and sounds better than any other junior i have ever played. the neck is perfect and does not cramp my hands like my other juniors did. ( probably the thicker neck ) and the tone is just amazing. it sounds REALLY good.. and i definitely enjoy how many tone options you can get with just the volume knob and tone knob..my last les paul juniors did not have this many tone options from my point of view..

build quality is fantastic. the case is better quality than their older cases. i dont see any scratches or issues with the finish at all and it also smells amazing being a new guitar. this is definitely my new favorite guitar i have ever owned and i have owned lots of higher end - mid range guitars in my life. i will not be selling this ever and will be keeping it till i die. its that good. Also thanks Jared for the sales support and great customer service over the years.

its also nostalgic to me considering my 2006 junior was my first "good" guitar and i miss it a lot since it got stolen. it means alot to me having something thats very similar to my old one. ironic enough. on my 2006 i changed the knobs to black ones.. which this guitar came with.. its an awesome guitar and you will never be disappointed with it.

That Tone!

By Sam from Praireville LA on December 30, 2022

I'm a Tele player but have been wanting something with a P-90 for a while. Since some of my favorite players use Jr's (Charlie String and Lukas Nelson) I decided that this what I wanted. I have to admit I was concerned about the neck shape but once I had it in my hands this went away quickly. The sounds that roar out of this guitar are exactly what I was looking for. Couldn't be happier!

No One Trick Pony

By Johnny D from Bear, DE on August 31, 2022 Music Background: 55 years of playing and collecting guitars.

I love a single-pickup guitar and many of the great classic players felt the same. For one, increased sustain and harmonics. With no neck pickup, there is no additional magnetic field pulling on the strings. The bridge pickup is mounted to the body and captures the resonance of this guitar. By adjusting the volume and tone you can dial in some sweet sounds. If you want a flashy shredder with a dive bomb whammy this guitar isn't for you. However, if you want a guitar with great sustain and legendary LP Junior sounds this is it. Gibson did a great job on these new juniors. Reasonable price, nice weight (mine is 6Lbs 3oz), Nitro Finish, vintage tuners, tortoise pickguard and a sharp hard-shell case. What's not to like?

Was in the market for a lpj and jumped on this guitar after checking the available inventory daily for almost a month. Thanks to my sales engineer Ryan he was able to get the guitar to me very fast. The guitar is everything i was looking for and am very pleased not only with the product but the service that came with it.

The best "new" gibson i've played in years!

By Rory Landt from Atlanta on April 6, 2022 Music Background: 17 years

The title says it all! I love this guitar. It is a freaking BEAST! This thing DOOMS!

Solid, simple, basic beast.

By Paul from SE Missouri on January 28, 2022 Music Background: Weekend warrior

I wanted a good quality guitar with no frills. Something that would force me to be more creative with a single pickup, volume and tone.
I read and heard such rave reviews about these new Juniors, and there's such a history of other players who have made them sound so great, I had to pull the trigger.
This thing has the fattest neck of any Gibson I have ever played, and I love it. The single P-90 has a lot of punch, and you really can get a decent variety of tones just by tweaking your volume and tone.
Out of the box, I really just lowered the bridge, checked the intonation (adjusted the screws a tad) and played a 3 hour gig with it that night.
The band was blown away as well.
I initially thought it was priced a couple hundred dollars more than what it should be, but it's a guitar I can and will use for anything.
I own 3 other Gibsons (LP, SG, Firebird), purchased between 1996 and 2016. This Junior is the best quality of the lot, overall.

Les Paul Junior

By Steve Y. from Northern CA on May 21, 2021 Music Background: 50 years semi-pro - all styles

Killer sound, fat neck, simple!
I cannot find whatever blemish made it a "demo" discount.
The Gibson P-90, of whatever interaction it is, sounds perfect for what I like.
I raised the pole pieces on the pickup: got clearer, more articulate, louder.
The neck is as fat as my Slash Standard's, and the growl pretty close.
It does not hum badly, but there's a little: not a big deal to me. I've heard much worse.
Fingerboard and frets are great. Feels perfect.
Scorching rock & roller, but for fun it can be made useful for jazz, on the fusion end.
I run clean through a Deluxe RI '65 Fender, and love the sounds.
The tone pot taper seems slightly abrupt, but actually is progressive. Works fine. Vol pot too. I may change it to '50's style wiring, but not yet.
Adam Cesarz (ext 1700) is my sales guy at Sweetwater. Pro all the way.
I'd buy another demo in a hot minute, from Sweetwater.

Solid, great sounding, beautiful instrument

By Chris Defeo from Baltimore City on February 9, 2021 Music Background: Teacher, writer, performer

This is the second Gibson Les Paul Junior that I have purchased within a year because I am so pleased with this instrument and the EXCELLENT customer service from Zac Terhune. The pick-up is clear and articulate and works with with a fingerstyle approach. The neck makes it easy to form jazz chords and play quick notes. I play it through a bass amp and love it. Get one.

Love the fat neck

By Tyler from Colorado on January 31, 2021 Music Background: Played bass for 20 years

I'm a bass player and that will always be my favorite, but I decided to try and learn guitar. I bought an ebony LPJ. As soon as I opened the case I was mesmerized by the awesome Gibson-ness of this thing. Beautiful at first glance. It plays really great as well. Love the p-90 sound, great for punk music. This is a great guitar, I have another guitar with 2 pickups and a slip taper neck and I almost always find myself grabbing my Junior when I go downstairs. Deanna Hooper is my sales rep and she has been very helpful with all of my purchases, especially since I am new to the six string.

Gibson is standing by their word

By Zachary Waite from Orlando, FL on August 25, 2020

Ordered this about 3 months ago and this guitar quickly became my favorite. The neck is great, plays wonderfully. The nitro finish polishes nicely and doesn't hinder the playing on the back of the neck. Its a chunky neck, so if that's not your thing then I'd suggest something different. Stays in tune and the intonation is surprisingly great in standard tuning. Wont bother with anything else just because you can easily mod the other stuff. Oh, the case is killer and comes with some cool candy.
