I Finally Found The One — 1968 Les Paul Custom Reissue Review

By Brad from DAVIE, FL

Have you bought one of these yet!? Cause wow….

I've been playing for over 20 years. I started out on single-coil Strats, but over the last 5 to 10 years I've gravitated toward Les Paul-style guitars and humbuckers. About 9 months ago, after a ton of research chasing what I hoped would be the end-all-be-all Les Paul, I picked up a 1968 Les Paul Custom Reissue and it's been my number one ever since.

The guitar is absolutely stunning. The glossy black finish paired with the gold hardware just pops. The dark, smooth ebony fretboard, the tinted lacquer on the binding and headstock… perfection. It all comes together into one seriously gorgeous instrument. The Custom Shop fit and finish is top-notch.

Tuning stability is rock solid. It stays in tune all day regardless of tuning. And the pickups? They can sing like an angel or scream like a demon off a metal record. Super dynamic, clear and articulate on cleans, but they handle gain without getting muddy and keep excellent note definition across the entire range.

It's not ultra-light, but it's far from a boat anchor- sits in that perfect, comfortable middle ground.

The neck pickup, in particular, is just out of this world. Clean or driven, it's something special. The bridge is great too, but the neck really steals the show.

I haven't regretted a single penny I spent on this guitar. It gets picked up every day, for practice and recording, and it deserves it.

So I'll ask again: did you buy one yet? You won't regret it.

My New #1!!!

By Brandon H. from HORN LAKE, MS

If you are sitting on the fence as I was about this guitar…. Just go ahead and pull the trigger! I should have bought this guitar long ago! I have a very keen eye and ear for perfection and this guitar checked off all the good boxes and not one negative! I've waited approximately 5-6 months before writing this review because I know how my opinion changes a lot of times after a few months. Not with this guitar. I can't put it down! I own a lot of high end guitars such as a James Tyler 35th Anniversary HD Elite, PRS Modern Eagle 5 10 Top, Gibson ES 335's, other Gibson Les Paul's, and several Fender Strats and Teles. This Guitar tops them all! I lucked up and found one that weighs only 8lbs which is a major plus as well! The pickups on this guitar are absolutely amazing! It also has sustain for days! Do yourself a favor and pull the trigger on this bad boy! I've mine and will absolutely never sell!

The Most Beautiful Guitar Ever!

By SuperSport from Sarasota, Florida

I have always dreamed of owning a real Les Paul Custom, but never really knew if it would ever happen. I was just browsing and dreaming when I came across this very special 1968 Les Paul Custom. This was the most beautiful guitar I had ever seen and it just spoke to something inside me. A gentleman on the web described it perfectly. He said, it was like you bought this guitar brand new in 1968 and then got drafted. Came back home years later and opened the case and there it was. Pictures do not do it justice. When it arrived and I held it in my hand's, wow! There's just something about it that feels very special as well! Of course it absolutely plays like a dream! Thank you so much Jason Sain at Sweetwater for helping me to make it happen! This was the big one, dreams do come true!

True to the original ‘68!reissue

By Robert B. from Southwick, MA
Music Background: Experienced gigging player

I own a 2008 '68 reissue and it is truly an amazing guitar. Neck profile is nicely rounded and hand filling without feeling chunky. The ebony FB and lower frets make for smooth and effortless playing. The tone is to die for, both at clean and overdriven amp settings. I'm the 4th owner and while this guitar has some buckle rash and humidity damage, it still polishes up to a nice mellow shine. I have a number of LP's and this is my favorite!

Stunning looks, sound and playability

By T. B. from Tallahassee, FL
Music Background: Retired, former semi pro, played over 1,000 gigs.

This guitar looks and plays amazing. I bougt one that weighs 9lbs and 6 oz, and it is not too heavy but has the bulk you look for in a Les Paul.

The pickups were a pleasant surprise. Then neck pickup has a real warm tone and is very lively. The bridge pickup also has great tone and can be very bright depending on how much treble you dial in.

While this is an expensive guitar, I wouldn't hesitate buying it again. I've owned a few Les Pauls, including an orignal 68 Custom. This guitar is every bit as playable and has an amazing sound.

If you can afford it, then buy it!

What a beauty!

By Mitch
Music Background: hobby

I was scared about Gibson QC but this one is as good as it gets. The sweetwater team and Sales Engineer Patrick Lanz were great as always. I waited a long time to review to see if I still felt the same about the guitar. Definitely pricey, but I would buy again in a heartbeat. Treble pickup can get ice picky, but cuts.

Beautiful Guitar

By Jair S. from Wisconsin
Music Background: Intermediate Music Student

First Les Paul Custom didn't disappoint , from its beautiful body, to its rich tone, long neck not so chunky, which I preferred but feels right there, I like the punch of the pickups and the clear tone when it's clean, a little heavy 9 pounds, but not so heavy compare to old guitars, the binding was a little not so perfect ,you can see there was a little painting mistake in the back, for the price , you should spect a little more perfection ,I like the light polish seems like it's gonna age sooner.,by the way I like buying my instruments from Sweetwater specially with my favorite sales representative, he always get me great deals, he's such a nice and fun guy to talk to, thanks you so much!!! Tomir Denton, he's the best of the best.

Beautiful.

By Cole C. from Alabama
Music Background: Recreational

All I can say is go ahead and buy this one. The absolute pinnacle of gibson and electric guitars in general. This is an absolute machine and the tone couldn't be better. It immediately fit perfect into my hands as if i'd been playing it for 30 years. It just feels like home to me. The finish is just beautiful, I love the gloss black top with the vintage looking binding and headstock. It is a killer for sure. Will never sell this guitar. Dont second guess yourself beginner, intermediate, or pro, if you got the dough, this is the one. Thank you stephen D and sweetwater for the best service around. I am excited for many many decades with this Gibson Custom.

Gibson 68 Reissue Les Paul Custom is epic!

By Martin S. from Lake Oswego, OR
Music Background: Professional Musician

I've owned many guitars in my lifetime including quite a few Les Pauls. But nothing compares to this one. Not even close.

I never have gotten around to getting a Custom Shop guitar but this one will top any future purchase I ever make.

When I opened the case I was blown away. The black nitro finish is perfect. The neck is bigger than a '60's Slim Taper but not baseball bat sized either. It's perfect.

Plugged it in and got exactly what I hoped for. It sounds bigger than my other guitars…the pickups are awesome.

Toll a long time to get here but it was well worth it. Shout out to my Sweetwater guy Mike Blair for making it happen…thanks brotha.

Don't hesitate to to pick one if these up…it sits at the top of my 50+ guitar collection be a mile!

Bought one in 2016. It's the bomb! Really ebony fretboard, no richlite on these. Neck is chunky and plays smooth as butter. Sounds huge.

This Is My Holy Grail Of Les Pauls

By Sweetwater Customer

When I was a freshman in high school I met a kid with the same obsession with guitars as I did. When I went over to jam at his house he pulled out a Gibson Les Paul Custom that his well off parent bought him. I was blown away by it. The way it looked and played was nothing like the cheap electric I was using.

Over my lifetime I have owned well over 100 guitars including many Gibson Les Pauls, Explorers, SG's and more. But got some reason or another I never bought myself a Gibson Les Paul Custom. Well that ended when I bought this 1968 Gibson Les Paul Custom Reissue.

Everything about this Les Paul oozes quality. When I opened the case the glassy black finish and gold hardware took me back to when I saw a LP Custom for the first time. And when I hit my first power chord it blew me away with its huge, beefy sound.

I couldn't recommend this guitar enough. Owning a Les Paul Custom is a dream come true for me. But owning this particular LP Custom has been far beyond my wildest dreams.

Make your own dreams come true by picking up one of this guitar. You won't regret it.
