Kali Audio Studio Monitors

By Sweetwater Customer

This is a short and sweet review. These speakers are very reasonably priced. They were delivered quickly. They were easy to unbox and set up. Have a room dip switch setting to optimize their sound reproduction. Response is beautiful, not biased in anyway by the speakers. Very flat reproduction. I used them to replace some JBL LSR6326p speakers that were nearly 20 years old, still in great condition, but required power supply capacitor service. That cost would be more than I paid for the Kali's. They do the same great flat reproduction. Thank you

Great monitors! Sound good and are honest

By Stephen B. from HAYDEN, ID
Music Background: Drummer

I watched a few people's tier list videos on monitors and these were rated fairly high for the price. Decided to get these instead of a cheaper more into price and I'm glad I did. And I love the quick db guide on the back based on your desk / wall set up. Super helpful.

They sound nice... It you sit exactly in the sweet spot

By Sweetwater Customer

I was "upgrading" my HS5 monitors to these, but I think I'm going back to my HS5's. They have a nice sound stage, but you better be in the sweet spot all the time. I move around quite a bit in my environment, where the HS5's are more consistent, these you can't move. Nicer low end than the HS5's because they are front ported, but you can really hear the shift if you move from the sweet spot where the HS5's are more stable. IDK, give them a try, may work out for you. I'll try these in my other studio, but for my initial upgrade space, not so much.

Used for Home Studio

By Alt G.

Great speakers, very flat, but rich. Near to Mid field. Need a good audio interface to complete. You don't need to spend a ton of money to get excellent performance. Excellence vs. Cost is asymptotic and limiting. These are good enough for most purposes.

BEST bang for the buck monitor

By Mike from Nashville, TN
Music Background: Sound Design, Mixing, Audio Post

I have been a Kali owner user for several years. I expanded my space and built a 7.1.4 room using IN-8 V2 for the 7, and added the LP-6 V2's for the 4 overheads. These speakers are very accurate and are working well for overheads. I tried them over the weekend on my DaVinci Resolve editing system. They translate well to the IN-8's in the audio room. I believe that I'll be supplementing my much more expensive monitors with a pair of LP-8's.

Legit.

By David from Austin, Tx.
Music Background: DJ

So I'm a Focal guy and I use the Alpha Evo 65's with my XDJ-RX3 here at the house to practice my sets on but I needed something slightly more honest when curating through Rekordbox and producing in Ableton. I was hesitant about these at first bc of the price but they have been nothing more than great to work with. Paired up with a Quantum ES2 audio interface everything is tight, crisp, clear and have a fairly wide range and a solid punch on the low end. I definitely recommend them if you're in search of something that will get the job done and not break the bank.

Excellent Monitors!

By Randy B. from Grants Pass, OR
Music Background: Pro Recording and Touring musician.

I purchased a pair of these via Ivan Salazar here at SW almost 3 years ago.....I know these aren't say, Genelec, Focal, or other 'top' tier monitors, but IMO, they are exceptional- not only for their price range, but I've heard monitors 3-4x the price that these easily match, if not best. They never fail to impress me and at the same time, nor do they lead me astray with inaccuracy. They also serve as great modeling speakers for your guitar or bass rig into a DAW. Still am running the same original set I bought- no repairs or glitches with them.

Their accuracy for voice is GREAT. Sometimes I will take an audio recording of a voice that may be unintelligible on say an iPad or iPhone, and run it through these and I can understand what has been said.

One day I forgot I had the gain up on my interface and ran a track off YT from my laptop...I was shocked how hard these things hit- like a gut punch (while I was grabbing for the volume knob), and they didn't as much as flinch. I almost bought the LP8 V2's but in my workspace it wasn't needed. They have a very nice midrange response/presentation for voice and vocals. Overall, they perform shockingly well, and I have recorded in some very good pro studios over the years, so I have that experience.. Even low subharmonics in movie videos that I'd never imagine I'd hear, with these just shine; nor did I think these speakers could reproduce without a subwoofer. I run just the two LP6 V2s, no sub. Very nice.

Good Price for Great Sound

By Trevor W. from Utah

I had been using Presonus 4.5s in my home studio for a while, and when I had a really small room they were fine. But after buying a new house and setting up in a much larger room downstairs, I just couldn't get any kind of low end out of them. I was always surprised by massive bass buildup when I listened to them on headphones or other speakers.
Turns out, you can't mix what you can't hear . . . go figure.
I did a ton of research, looked at many speakers that wouldn't break the bank and give me some good speakers to record and mix with.
I wasn't able to test out any speakers beforehand, so I really had to go off of reviews, specs, and finally had a convo with my Sweetwater rep. Between all of the speakers in this price range it came down to Kali or Adam Audio, each with some really great pros and some cons, but ultimately I bought these because they had a pair of open box deals that I couldn't pass on.
And I have been very pleased so far.
I have used them a lot over the past 6+ months recording and mixing electric and upright bass mostly, but also jazz trio, rock bands, and other ensembles. They sound great, I get a really accurate representation of the low end, and my mixes have sounded much better when I bounce them out than they used to. I feel more confident that what I'm listening to is what things will sound like outside of the studio.
For a home studio, I think it's hard to beat these for the price, and I don't think I'll be needing to upgrade anytime soon, which is a really huge bonus for a home studio on a tight budget. Buy once, cry once, as they say. I feel like these fulfill that promise.

Awesome sound!

By Montell G. from MURFREESBORO, TN

I'm no expert on studio monitors but I'm glad I upgraded to these because they sound great! They really help me hear the details in my mixing now. Again, I'm no expert.

Crystal clear - happy I upgraded!

By Sweetwater Customer

I've been meaning to upgrade my studio monitors for a few years now - I had my old studio monitors literally for decades. I tracked and mixed a number of projects with them over the years, and I was worried that I'd have to spend some time settling in with the Kalis. However, it took no time at all to get comfortable with these monitors, and they're a big upgrade for me in terms of clarity and sound stage imaging. They're really easy to listen to, and more detailed than my old monitors.

Clarity and great stage

By Sweetwater Customer

Every once in a while, I'll jump and turn around thinking someone entered my office/studio. Subtle yet clear and balanced. Great stage presence. Some may want to get a sub for the deeper bass or more rumble, but I feel the bass is audible enough, beautifully subtle, without being subdued. These made me fall in love again with my office space.

Kali Audio LP-6 V2 studio monitors

By Steve J.

These replaced some older M-Audio speakers that did not work very well in my current room. My room layout is a 12x14 converted attic space with sloped ceilings on the sides and flat ceiling in the center. The short walls have a window or a door, so am stuck with setting up along the long wall. This is a home studio used only for myself and one of my kids who records when visiting. These speakers have been a major improvement over what I had. I've been able to "tune" them (by adjusting the switches in the back) to be somewhat close to what I hear from a pair of Beyerdynamic DT700 Pro X headphones (which sound great, BTW). Am also working without a sub, which I thick is OK given the room size. They are more than loud enough for this space. I don't have experience in this space with any higher end/more expensive speakers to compare, but feel these have been a good value and would definitely recommend them for small rooms.

More than I expecting

By Anthony

So far I am blown away. These are packed with value and at this price can not be beat. Using in a basic set up, to monitor guitar and tracks and they are very detailed and sound incredible. Bass is more than adequate for my space and on top of Auralex pads they are rock solid.

STUNNINGLY good budget speaker!

By James F.
Music Background: Film and Television Re-Recording Mixer

I'm a Re-Recording mixer for film and televion, and typically mix in surround with Meyer HD-1's for my LCR.

After years of use, the Meyers needed to be sent out for service, but to keep the studio up and running I needed a budget set that could serve as a backup and smaller format reference.

So I picked up 3 LP-6s for the LCR, and just finished mixing my first show on them.

I'm SHOCKED at how good they sound. They are not hyped. The frequency response is pretty flat, making them very similar to the LCR I'm used to. Transient response is fast and tight making them great for dialogue, sound effects and music.

At $200 a box (July 2023 price), I can't think of anything better for the type of content I'm working on.

First Studio monitors (Podcasts, Audio Dramas, Sound Design)

By Nathan K. from Crownsville, MD

I had been mixing on headphones and consumer Klipsch speakers for a while but after doing more and more sound design for the projects I was working on, I really felt like what I was creating never sounded the way I wanted outside of headphone use.
So I decided to hunt for some affordable monitors. I was really torn between the KALI, JBL and ADAM monitors in the same price range.
I had the chance to audition the JBL and ADAM monitors. They both sounded great, but I felt the JBLs were boosting the low end and high end a bit much for my personal tastes. Because I'm dealing with lots of explosions, gunfire and horror-type sound fx, I opted for KALI because of the larger woofer.
Once Caleb from Sweetwater hooked me up with them, I put them on stands and followed the guidance from their YouTube videos on placement according to my listening position and I was impressed right away. The stereo field is quite amazing. It took me a while to adjust to not having the subwoofer from the consumer speakers, but I'm doing the majority of my editing and mixing on monitors instead of headphones for the first time in years.

My ears are really happy.
Thanks!

These are amazing!

By Scott H. from Nashville, IN

Returning after a year of using a pair of Kali Audio LP-6 V2's. After unboxing and setting them up I've been kicking myself for not getting them a long time ago. V2 gave me the impetus to finally buy. These are amazing. The very first thing I noticed was the clarity. Admittedly I've mixed for decades in a home studio with good home speakers, but nothing a pro would use. Now I HEAR everything. Subtle nuances that were lost before. After hearing the difference my non-musician wife even suggested we get a second pair for home theater use. A year later and these still wow me every time I use them! The only thing I'm going to have to add is a sub so I will stop boosting bass too much :)

Musician, Recording engineer

By Sixstring from California
Music Background: Musician for 60 years and recording engineer for 60 years.

I made my first recording on a reel to reel Packard Bell Mono recorder in 1963. For the money these are the best out there. These put my M-AUDIO 5" monitors to shame. The extra size of the Kali makes a huge difference. In my opinion only, I feel they are equal to Adams T7V. I was looking at the Adams T5V because of my budget when Candice my sales rep recommended I take a look at the Kali LP V2 6.5. I am glad I did. I saved money and feel good about my choice. Thank you Candice for your help and recommendation. I am using them in conjunction with some bookshelf Bose speakers to get a nice balance of mid range which add nicely to a great bottom and clear top end from the Kali's. A good way to judge your sound set up is to play Pink Floyd TIME. A lot of nice tonal ranges in that song. good luck to all.

Very transparent clean set of monitors!

By Tony A. from North Port Florida
Music Background: Musician / Audio Engineer/ Producer

Very pleased with the kali 6.5s! These monitors give a true interpretation of your mix, the transparency is is what i love about them, no coloration to mud up your mix. In a class of it's own compared to other monitors that provide a similar sound quality, highly recommend these speakers.

Game changing

By Sweetwater Customer from CA

When placed right, and configured properly (easy back switches), these monitors provide clarity and sound stage like I've never experienced before. I've had Rockit 8's and 3" PreSonus and these are a total game changer. Make sure you use them with a proper external audio interface to get the most out of them. These punch way above their price point.

Great pair of monitors for a small to medium sized space.

By Alex T. from HEATH, TX

These monitors have been on my mind and wishlist for a while, and they definitely deliver.
The setup was straightforward, and the 8-position DIP switch on the back allows you to adjust boundary compensation EQ, LF & HF trims, etc. based on their room position and application.
At the highest volumes I've tested, they sound great in my space (12 x 14). They can definitely get uncomfortably loud, I leave the monitors' volume pot at the 0dB detent, and around 9-10 o'clock on my Scarlett 2i2's volume pot is more than enough for mixing. Even at lower levels, they maintain their true-to-source character.

Power on / off is SILENT. No clicks or pops at all, and switching inputs with the Hosa SLW-333 switcher is also silent (although that is likely more a merit of Hosa's product). The indicator light is non-distracting but obvious that they're on.

Their 3-D Imaging Waveguide claims to produce a soundstage wider, taller, and deeper than their true stereo placement, and I'd attest to that. They sound natural, neutral, and large.
They can push a great amount of clean bass thanks to the low-noise front-facing port, though they aren't going to rattle the room. I wasn't expecting them to, and for the price, this pair is a great entry-level near-field monitor.

Kali 6 v2

By Sparky a. from Central Va
Music Background: Electronic Darkwave Goth Industrial

Nice pair. Had no idea what was amiss with my previous small 'monitors'. Took a few weeks to get used to the difference, but now I'm beginning to understand what I hear at the desk, -vs- in my boom boom car, -vs- other artists well produced sounds.. these are paramount to a better mix and product from my desk..

Outstanding value for price

By Michael S. from LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ

At this price point there is no better option for small or home studio use. Pristine fidelity and more than enough wattage. Stepped up from Eris 3.5's and my partner, no audiophile, heard the difference immediately, with no prompting. Kali is onto something good, with sound quality and features found on far more costly monitors.

Great Monitors and service

By John H. from Cincinnati
Music Background: Video Editor and Guitar hack.

I am a video editor and recently started my own company working out of my home studio. I inherited a pair of 20 year old Tannoy monitors that served me well but were starting to have a little bit of low end distortion from them and looking to upgrade. I talked to Robby at Sweetwater, described my studio layout, sent him some pictures and discussed my budget. Because my current monitors mounted close to the wall he wanted to make sure I was looking at front porting monitors. I didn't even know that was a thing. I will admit I never heard of Kali Audio before but after doing online research I quickly found that people love these monitors. I have had them setup for a couple of weeks and loving the sound. I clearly hear every range with not too much of anyone frequency. Some monitors tend to have too much bass that quickly gets muddy. These do not. The bass is perfect. I also love the Boundary EQ switches on the back. I played around with the switches and within just a few rounds of testing found just the right balance for my studio. I would highly recommend these monitors and of course Sweatwater's excellent service.

By Michael G. from Great Falls, MT
Music Background: Composer and Producer

I have a pair of the original v2s, that I use at home, and when my studio speakers went out, I figured these would be a good replacement. Except they sound NOTHING like the old version. Hig mids are overaccentuated and harsh and upper lows are incredibly muddy. I am not happy at all.

Kali Audio LP-6V2 6.5- inch powered studio monitors - EXCELLENT!!

By RichTex from Texas
Music Background: Musician since I was 11, I'm 75 now. Minister, I Play Bass, Guitar, Pedal Steel Guitar, Keyboards, Sing with my wife. We write and perform Christian music.

I bought these in hopes that I would be able to spot areas in the songs I was writing and recording for a CD. I'm blown away by the difference in sound between the Kali monitors and the PreSonus 3" powered monitors I was using. I have them both setup on my system so I can A-B them and discover where the differences are. The PreSonus monitors are good, and they were what I could afford at the time, but the Kali's are so much more accurate I was astounded. I also purchased monitor stands so I could get all the speakers off the cardboard boxes I was using to position the speakers. I was first amazed at the size of the Kali's, they are three times the size of the PreSonus monitors and a lot heavier. I set the din pins so that the response was flat across the spectrum and would give a flat response. I expected better bass response from the Kali's but they are way better than I was looking for.
All in all, excellent monitors for the money. I have had more expensive monitors on previous systems in the past, and these are as good as any I have used.

The clarity is amazing!

By Scott from H

I've often wondered if a really good pair of studio monitors would make a huge difference. Until recent years they were out of touch for small home project studios. A Sweetwater sale was all I needed to finally pull the trigger. All I can say is WOW! Why did I wait so long?! These Kali's are amazing, even for my old ears. I've been playing/writing/recording for well over 40 years and have never before sat in front of speakers like this and been able to clearly pick out each individual instrument in a crowded mix. The clarity is amazing! You won't regret getting these.

They sounded great, but had defects

By Sweetwater Customer from SANTA FE, NM
Music Background: 20 years production and audiophile experience

Initially, I was very impressed with the tonality and imaging of the Kali's. Unfortunately I soon found there to be subtle distortion in the low-end that should never have passed QA. I was subsequently told this is an issue with some units, so I returned mine and went another direction with some passives I know and trust.

Overall, I will give Kali the benefit of the doubt that I got lemons. They would be really great for the money if not for the issues in the low end clarity, but the QA is clearly lacking.

Excellent for project studio

By Razvan C. from Rochester, NY
Music Background: Passion for music, guitars and recording for 35 years

In October 2020 I had to move to the US, and decided to sell my project studio, for it was too expensive to pay transport for keboards, monitors, stands etc.
I found myself with a limited budget, a great passion and no one to get advice from, facing huge array of gear.
After many tedious weeks of browsing and documentation, I thought I made my mind, called Sweetwater and wanted to order. To these days I am thankful for running into Erick, who took the time to discuss gear and options and offer good guidance. I ended up with a pair of Kali Audio (and not other options I had in mind, more well-known brands).
To this day my monitors do the job, I get mixes as good as I can be, because they give me good reference and no "sugarcoated" sound. I love the switch on the back, which optimizes sound according to where you do place the monitors (against a wall, on a stand etc). Keep in mind that my rating implies a budget and years of project studio recording.
Even if my space is not properly optimized, as it is a temporary rent (yeah, no significant mods allowed :(( ), I still manage to mix and master decently. Also my guitar pre-amp/processor sounds just great through them, which is a proof that they are flat-response, as my previous FRFR speakers were.
Very happy with my purchase and planning to keep them even at some point I will certainly make an upgrade, once my studio will be stable in my own home. Sweetwater, I am thinking Genelec with Smart Active Monitoring Technology, wadd'ya say? :)

Diving me insane

By Leif B. from Seattle
Music Background: Musician, producer, elelctronics technician

I bought these based on good reviews here and on Warren Huart's show Produce Like a Pro. Unfortunately, I'm finding them less than adequate. They are so boomy and boxy. Everything sound bad through them. I've tried setting the dip switches to cut the bass, to boost the highs, I've tried boosting the bass (their online documentation has mistakes in it, so who knows which of their directions are correct?), but can't get rid of the mud.

I bought these because my Hafler power amp stopped working, but I think I'll need to replace it with something new and go back to my trusted Dynaudio BM5s.

Solid budget monitors!

By Tom from PA, US

These are my first set of studio monitors so I can only compare them to other types of speakers I've owned but for the money I'm very happy with these. They might be a touch bright but otherwise they seem to have a really smooth response & I was surprised by the amount of low end in them for their size. I ended up pairing these with the PreSonus Eris Sub8 & can't believe what a great match it is with these Kali's! I'm set up in a room that's 9'W x 15' L x 9'H & the LP6's have plenty of power & I think you'd have to have a considerably larger space to justify moving to the LP8.

Fantastic sounding monitors!!

By Sweetwater Customer from Tennessee

I can't speak for the newer version (V2), as I own the previous model and they absolutely sound fantastic! Incredible flat response, very detailed, accurate, and dynamic across the audio spectrum, with great bass response and very quite noise floor. I don't know what others are talking about when they say the V1 version is noisy...mine are dead quite, even when I max the volume. And for the price these were going for it was a fantastic value! I tested these against the JBL, KRK and Yamaha offerings that were in the $ price point, and these LP-6's sounded much better to my ears. I love listening to music and mixing with these monitors! There's nothing really I can say bad about them. I'd like to try out the newer version to see if I can hear any difference compared to the original...but either way, I'm still going to be more than happy with the ones I have now! Can't go wrong with these!

Great!

By Rick B. from Sharon, ND
Music Background: Musician, engineer, producer.

I bought these to replace a 12 year old pair of Behringer 'Truth' monitors (also 6.5" woofer) that had developed a rattle/buzz in the low end on one of them. I had been very happy over the years with the Behringers. After a lot of research I settled on the LP6's. Granted, I have the previous version but . . . . I think if anything the V2's should be even better. I'm completely satisfied with these monitors. The clarity and stereo imaging is fantastic. The detail is great as well as being very flat response-wise. My mixes translate extremely well on a variety of listening platforms. I've been doing this for a long time and can't really express how impressed I am, especially for the quite reasonable price. You really can't go wrong with these. As always, my sales rep Patrick was very helpful, kind and courteous.

Great

By Sweetwater Customer from California

These are my first pair of studio monitors and for the price they're phenomenal. They're bigger than what I anticipated but they sound superb. Low end response could be better but it is what you get at this price range. Also, the bass response is up to par with what kali says it is. The eq features and placement settings are super helpful.

These Sound Incredible !!

By Andrew from Grayslake, IL
Music Background: Amatuer Musician and Learning Studio One

I just replaced my start-up 3" Monitors w/these and all the reviews were spot on. These speakers are incredibly clean. I am in a small bedroom and these are plenty loud trust me. The bass coming out is perfect and I don't think I will need a sub woofer at this time. If your on the fence about these - get off the fence and get em - ya cant beat the price for this quality of sound !!

These Sound Amazing!!

By Kaelo
Music Background: Hip Hop Artist, Sound Engineer and Producer. Film Sound Designer by profession

Got these today and I'm amazed by how great they sound. Firstly, they are super loud in my medium sized, so if you were worried about that and wanted 8inch monitors for loudness, you can still get loudness with these monitors. Secondly, there isnt a hiss unless your ear is 3cm away from the monitors, and even there, its slightly noticeable. I heard my friend's V1 monitors and the hiss was unbearable, but on these V2's, trust me, you wont hear a thing, they got rid of that problem.
Thirdly and most importantly, The bass is amazing. I'm a hip hop based engineer and artist, so trust me when i say if you're in a small room, you dont need an 8inch monitor for bass, these will give you all the bass you need.
These monitors also look good, trust me.
I've tried the KrK Rokit 7s and Yamaha Hs8s , but i went with these for price over the
HS8's, and overall performance over the Rokit 7s

Great Speakers

By Steve E. from Philadelphia
Music Background: Classic rock

I am not a real techy kind of guy. I needed speakers for my home studio for mixing purposes. I spoke with my gear guy Kenny and he suggested trying this new brand. I'll tell you, these sound amazing, not just for mixing but in general. These sound too good for what I paid for them. One would think that I paid much more than I did for these speakers. Thank you Sweetwater and especially Kenny for suggesting these speakers.
