Little Labs LL2A Compressor/Limiter Reviews

1-channel Compressor with Stepped Threshold And Gain Controls, Sidechain Insert, and Unbalanced Stereo Operation

First off, we’ll address the elephant in the room: aside from controlling levels smoothly and effectively, Little Labs LL2A shares no attributes with a famous compressor bearing a strikingly similar name. In fact, it’s an entirely new — and quite novel — design that uses a single linear analog multiplier in the audio path to provide natural-sounding soft-knee attenuation of the input audio signal. The feature set, however straightforward, does include a very useful sidechain insert jack. For level and gain-reduction metering, the LL2A uses a new-old-stock neon Nixie tube that’s rather reminiscent of a 1966 Ford Thunderbird speedometer! Engineers at Sweetwater have found the LL2A to be well suited for everyday deployment on vocals and full-range material. The Little Labs LL2A’s streamlined 2-knob setup lets you nail great-sounding results quickly, while the high-quality stepped threshold and gain controls make settings recall effortless.

LL2A to Catch Your Eye and Revvv Your Windings

By Maurllan

I've had a pair of these for years. They're easy to use. The new old stock NIXIE tube meters are fun to watch. Then one day, I hooked the Little Labs LL2A pair up after my BabyFace Pro FS main outs and sent the LL2A signals on to my Rupert Neve 5042 dual tape, then on again to my Little Labs Monotor and into my favorite studio headphones. Wow. I'll be using the combo for mastering going forward. The Little Labs LL2A output has the same driver at 0.5-ohm output impedance as the Monotor, and the Neve transformers respond magnificently to the supercharged push from the LL2A pair — pure, effortless polish. Crystal for the ears. I can hear detail to discern different bit rates in source material. Voices are more intimate — by ear, I can count how many fillings the vocalist has. I'll be moving some cables around to include the loop as a send / return for mastering final mixes.
