Ludwig Copper Phonic Snare Drum - 8 x 14-inch - Raw Patina Finish Reviews

8" x 14" Copper Snare Drum with 1.2mm Beaded Shell and 2.3mm Triple-flanged Hoops - Raw Patina Finish

With almost a century of symphonic timpani making under its belt, Ludwig knows copper. The legendary drum company has now brought its copper expertise to its snare drums with the Copper Phonic. This sensational snare drum rocks a thick 1.2mm copper shell with a gorgeous lightly lacquered and patina'd dark raw copper finish. Ludwig built the Copper Phonic to the same pro standards as the company's famous Supraphonic, Bronze Phonic, and Black Beauty snares (all Sweetwater favorites). The Copper Phonic's seamless copper shell delivers a dark, punchy sound with rich, complex overtones. The Ludwig Copper Phonic will make an excellent addition to your drum kit or snare arsenal.

I just picked up one of these. I was able to try out so many opotions at a local store, including more boutique snare lines like Woods and AVIA, and the minute I tried this Ludwig 14x8 Raw Copper snare it was lights out for every other snare I played. So deep, but still so much character. It's unlike anything else I own, and yet is not so far crazy of a sound that it will end up as a niche sound. Could not be happier with it!

Copperphonic: Ludwig's Sleeper Snare Drum

By Sweetwater Customer on March 21, 2024 Music Background: Drummer/Location Audio Recorder/Home Studio

Truth be told I've never been much on Ludwig snare drums over the past five decades. I've held nothing against them, but I have always looked to other brands/models by different makers to fill my desire for unique voices in my snare arsenal. Time has a way of tempering you though, and I ultimately conceded and found myself with a customized "Blackrolite" and two Black Beauties. I absolutely fell in love with the 8-inch deep Black Beauty. But the Ludwig Copperphonic models flew under my radar until a few months ago when I started listening closely to Ludwig's copper line up. I realized that the Copperphonic model has its own unique voicing that was missing in my collection. A drum tech shared with me that Copper shells have "balanced and even frequencies, from the bottom to the top." The more I researched the Copperphonic the more I realized it is actually an amazing drum. Why is it not more popular? Trust me, it's going to be. I've come to the conclusion that it may likely be the best snare drum Ludwig has to offer. Most Copperphonic owners I've contacted say the 6-1/2-inch X 14-inch is "more versatile." But I feel that the 8-inch X 14-inch Copperphonic is every bit as versatile as its 6-1/2-inch brother if not more so. The 8-inch depth has more presence and body to my ear. Really beefy low tuning. With high tuning it's a great rock 'n roll snare drum. It's an all around versatile drum throughout the tuning range. As soon as my Copperphonic came I began a few simple modifications (see attached photos with P86C throw off, P33 Butt Plate, Canopus Bolt Tight Washers and Canopus Vintage NP 20 strand snare wires) and will continue to experiment with different heads and hoops to see what I can draw out of it. No doubt it is the "sleeper" snare drum in the Ludwig line up. But some in the recording scene have already proclaimed their verdict: the Copperphonic could be the "Black Beauty killer." I'm not there yet, but even at this point so early in the game I can say with confidence that if you can only own one metal snare drum, you need to seriously consider a Copperphonic. It's that good.

The availability and financing options Sweetwater offers are second to none. Not only am I able to purchase the gear that's mostly sold out in other e-trailers, receiving a personalized service and follow up really rounds out the experience with 5/5 star recognition. Matt was extremely friendly and offered future support which I appreciate as an avid and aspiring musician.

In the 8" x 14" size, the sweetest snare I've owned, or heard. Clean, clear and a powerhouse Head Turner. Tuned high, great Rock and Jazz snare. Top quality, beautiful instrument.
