Tama LBR1465 S.L.P. Black Brass 6.5 x 14-inch Snare Drum Reviews

6.5" x 14" Brass Snare Drum with 1.5mm Shell and 2.3mm Triple-flanged Hoops - Black Nickel

TAMA's Sound Lab Project Black Brass snare drum gives you the deep, loud, and wonderfully warm sound of brass for a great low price. Built for serious regular use, TAMA outfitted the Black Brass snare with relatively thick, 1.5mm brass shell and a 2.3mm flanged Steel Mighty Hoop. These give you a wide open sound that cuts clearly through even extremely dense mixes. What's more, TAMA gave the Black Brass snare a 42-strand carbon-steel Snappy Snare, providing you with the buzz and snarl that's perfect for aggressive rock. Heck of a snare!

By Steven from Los Angeles
Music Background: Drummer

I got mine about 10 years ago and let me tell you, this snare rocks! crank it all the way up or lower it for some fat sound, this snare has it all! Sounds great, plays great and it has great articulation. I still have the original 42 strand wires, and they still are going strong.

Since its a brass shell, it has a bit of ring after each hit, but with a couple of moon gels or your choice of dampening, is awesome! With a mid to lower tuning, I feel I'm making mini earthquakes with each hit lol.

Oh and it's loud! so, grab onto something.

Good job Tama!

Amazing drum

By Sweetwater Customer

Just used this to record my band's fourth album and it rocked! Had it side by side with a black beauty and this Tama SLP won! It's a heavy drum with great crack and tone. I was hesitant to spend $ on this drum knowing I had access to the Ludwig and a bunch of other snares for this recording, but I couldn't be happier with the sound - and now I have this in my collection. Highly recommend!

Very versatile and balanced snare

By Evan G. from New Jersey
Music Background: The Nerds sound and drum tech, and drummer of the band Jack.

I googled "best snares for studio recording" and this was one of the first that came up. Yes it"s not cheap, but a brass drum will never break. You can tune this snare high or low and it will handle it very well. Dynamics are amazing, which is what I was looking for. From ghost notes to slamming it really hard, the quality of the tone and air is consistent and extremely pleasant while still allowing all the dynamics you would need. In other words, it doesn"t sound terrible when you hit it lightly, and when you hit it lightly it isn"t the same volume and attack as hitting it hard, but again keeps the quality of the overall sound. Sorry for my trouble describing this snare, but I guarantee it"s a steal. The only other snare I played that was of this quality was a $1200 DW snare. OH WAIT. If you"re playing live, this WILL cut right through the mix perfectly without being the only thing you"ll hear. So basically this thing is a dream for anyone who plays drums or owns house drums or a sound company that wants all the control you can possibly have with a snare. Done. I"m going to go buy this thing a ring now and write my vows.

Like punch in the face

By F B. from Queensbury, NY
Music Background: 40+ yrs rock

I've been looking for a snare with a good punch, oh man does this one delivered !!!! I play mainly rock and not in a huge place, small to medium sized bars, I don't bother mic'ing this thing as it's like some one fired a shotgun in the house!!! Definitely the heaviest snare I've ever had, and I mean heavy as in you should always have 2 hands on this thing as it's got more than it's fair share of gravitational pull.

Outstanding share drum

By Criss A. from Tennessee
Music Background: 32 years

This snare made by tama is the most brutal snare I've worked with. The sound will break through any amp on a stage , and it's a beautiful drum. If you play metal, rock , death metal you must purchase this snare. Tama has done an outstanding job.

You can't go wrong with this snare. Tama never fails. Sounds great and even better when I added die cast hoops. This snare will not disappoint.

Great Snare Drum

By Jay A. from Spartanburg, SC
Music Background: Producer, Engineer, Composer

I bought this drum to have some snare sound variety in my studio, and I am very pleased. It has a huge sound and a lot of character. I have tuned it to have a low, fat sound, as well as a high, snappy sound with great results.

For my taste, the 42-strands were too much on the snare side. I replaced them with a lower number snare wire and love the sound.

One thing to be aware of is that, because of the brass shell, there is naturally a significant amount of ring with each hit. If you do not want ring, a couple Moongels (or other dampening methods) are a quick fix. There is plenty of fat tone left to go around.
