The Best Kept Secret

By Steve from Rockville, MD on August 16, 2023

I'm a all around musician. I play keys, electric and acoustic guitars and bass. I've played many types of basses over the years and have been drawn to Jazz style / Music Man string Ray basses. Since I'm not a full time bass player, I didn't want to invest 3k in a bass so I started doing my research and came across this bass. Wow, just wow. The first thing I noticed was the neck. Smooth thin neck and super comfortable. The sound is truly remarkable. You can get tons of tones from slap to pop to Jazz. This bass does it all. I have it running through a EBS Micro Bass 3 (which I also recommend) and it's just blissful.

Sweet and Sassy

By Mark Ricky Hendricks from BLACKSBURG , Virginia on May 31, 2023 Music Background: I've been playing off and on since the 70's. I'm 68 now and still going. My only claim to fame was playing on a few tracks for the deseased ex tower of power trumpet player mic Gillette's "Ear Candy" cd!

I've always been attracted to lakland basses, finally purchased one and I'm not disappointed. This bass was made out of a beautiful piece of wood. I don't know much about lakland electronics but the ones from them seem to be alright for now. If I remember they used to use electronics from Bartolini. If I get the chance I'll replace these for the barts. Wide open this bass has a growl of its own, back down the volume and you control the bark. The construction of this guitar is fantastic. The only improvement that I could hope for would have this instrument made in america. It says that this one was crafted in America but parts seemed to be from Indonesia. No matter this is a fine instrument that any player would love to own as I am!

*Redaction* String through the body!

By Sweetwater Customer on December 14, 2022

Stringing through the body of this bass greatly reduced the string-to-string vibration I was previously experiencing while using regular long scale round core nickels. DR Hi-Beams are a great string-through fit for this bass!

What a wonderful bass!

By Taylor on August 28, 2022

If I were describe this bass in one word: Balanced. The weight feels balanced, the body is comfortable, the neck is large but also comfortable because it fills my hand, the preamp and coil tap are very responsive and useful, and there is clarity to every single fret. This will NOT replace your jazz bass, but instead will shine as a well-rounded work horse which will fit into any genre or playing style. Being my first 5 string, figuring out how to approach playing this bass has made me a better/more technique-conscious player due to the string-to-string vibration which occurs while not using proper striking hand muting technique. I'm not just talking about rest-strokes here, the entire heel of my striking hand as well as the underside of my unused fretting fingers need to be making some slight contact with the strings to prevent unwanted ringing. This is something I never needed to deal with on my Fender Jazz and Precision basses, but I am pleasantly surprised by the relationship this bass offers to the player. The value of this bass well exceeds the price when compared to a USA Fender or Musicman. After seeing what Lakland quality is even while using some overseas production, I know I will be acquiring another one down the line. Maybe that short scale semi-hollow body bass!

Love this bass!

I own a US made 55-94 deluxe and wanted another Lakland(I owned 2 Skyline 55-01 basses in the past and loved them). I wanted a 2nd Lakland as a backup to my 55-94. This bass is sweet. Looks and sounds terrific. Has the same pickups & electronics as my U.S. Lakland. I was going to buy a Fender American Pro II Jazz V but opted for Lakland since I've owned them and played many gigs with them. They are well made, look great and most importantly sound awesome. Much cheaper in price to it's American cousin but by no means inferior.

Fantastic Bass

By Zachary Guise from Flagstaff on October 16, 2017

Unbelievably expansive tone control, as well as the perfect action for my playing style. The quad/dual tap and dual/single tap expands your options even more. Just fantastic...

A Masterpiece.

People say you don't know what you've got until it's gone. I had a lakland 55- 02 before and I sold it. I thought I could get something better. I have spent thousands of dollars on top brands and custom made basses but I could not be satified with none of them. I saw sweetwater have the lakland spalted version and I tought I would try it again. Oh my goodness!, It felt surreal to hear that sound again. It was amazing to play that bass again. I would never sell that bass again.
