I grabbed one of these to clean up all the mic stands I have around my studio kit. My D6 mounted flawlessly and my recorded kick tones sound great!

Great product,I'm now using a logo resonant front front kick head. My Beta 52 is now mounted within the drum with a pig tail XLR out of the air port.

Works well

Great recommendation by Mitch Fraizer.
So much better then using a mic stand that the lead singer trips over. Sounds great as well . Makes life easier for the working musician.

Great mount for Beta 52

By Clint Kolb from Henderson, NV on January 22, 2022

I used the Shu mount for a Beta 52. It works amazingly.
Simple yest super effective I also used the Kelly Shu XLR Cable Management Systems SKU: SHU-ACZ5.

It worked perfectly. You just need to take your time.
Measure twice cut once.

Great product!

Spend some time and show your kik mic some love with this mic mount. You can use it on the outside as well!
You can even install in horizontal position inside drum. Be aware of clearance tolerance to front head as mic cable (attached to mic) might contact drum head so you may have to have a 90° connector on cable mic side.

Great product. Here's my mounting tip:

A handy way to get your rubber tube lengths figured out is to turn kick drum rim down on the floor, then place the Kelly SHU on the floor however you want it centered within the shell. Then take all your measurements, divide those measurements in half and go from there. It's a bit easier than suspending the Kelly SHU by hand and trying to eyeball the measurements. I find that depending on the sound I want, tipping the mic upward a bit (not right at the beater) works well if I don't want that clicky sound. Good luck!

A better mousetrap...

...aka: an new improvement on a means or product that has already been standardized. Mr.Kelly & Co. has come up with a micing solution that is so simple it makes us all wish we'd thought of it. This thing works great, & despite what an impatient few might say- it's easy to install.

Great product!!

By mitch layman from OR on September 21, 2019

This thing really is an awesome invention. I mounted this in my bass drum in about ten minutes. No more external mic stand or mess and my kick sounds great, no bleed from other sources. I highly recommend this product. A pretty inexpensive way to dial in your bass drum.

The Kelly Shu- don’t think, just do!

By Rich Christensen from Wisconsin on February 6, 2019 Music Background: Rock drummer

As of now I own 5 Kelly Shu internal mic mounting systems. I began using them inside my primary kits kick drums but then............. I expanded. I use large drums. 16x15 mounted Tom, 18x16 floor Tom, and 20x18 custom floor Tom. I went out on a limb and mounted the Kelly SHU system inside the other drums. BOOM!! Outstanding sound and a quality mount! So if you"re considering using the system, don"t think, just do! Get the Kelly Shu!!

Love the Kelly shu

Easy install and great isolation!

By Kurtis Lucas from Lucas, TX on April 3, 2013 Music Background: Working Drummer

Installed in a 22" DW kick with a D112. Used the may vent connector for the cable and looks very clean. No residual noises anymore from walking or jumping around the kick and no more boom stand for the kick mic.

Wish I'd Thought of It

By Mark from Knoxville, TN on January 16, 2017 Music Background: Drummer over 40 years, soundman over 20.

Installed this in my kick drum last week. Took about 45 minutes total, including getting the tools together, (nut driver, channel lock pliers, scissors), removing the front head, figuring out the best position, putting the mounting cords together, actually installing the mic and mount, and then reinstalling the front head.

Used it at our next gig a few days later and it worked great. I checked it a couple of times over the course of the evening and the mic didn't move at all.

I may install an XLR output on the lower side of my kick, just to give a cleaner look on stage and eliminate the cord dangling out the front kick port, but I understand that not everyone would want to go drilling a hole in the side of their drum.

Since a lot of the stages my band plays on are pretty small, not having a mic stand in front of the kick, which can get in the way of other band members, is a big plus. Not having to worry about lugging around a mic stand for the kick is also nice.

I used 6 mounting points on my installation, but the kit comes with enough hooks, straps, and shockcord to either add a couple of more if you find them necessary, or to just use as spare parts if one breaks in the future. It seems to work very well. Just wish I'd thought of it.

Great product

By Jason from Spring, TX on April 29, 2010 Music Background: Drummer of 20+ years

So, I received the Kelly Shu Composite and installed it in my kick last night. I am really very happy with the quality of the product and the instructions for install. It only took about 30 minutes with some tweaking of the cord lengths and it was done. The kit came with everything you need and the quality of all the parts is top notch. More importantly, it holds the mic right where I wanted it and allowed me to get rid of another stand!

Good but not great for small bass drums

By Garrett from Michigan on February 27, 2020 Music Background: 30 years of live/studio work

I run an 18" bass drum and I'll tell you, from personal experience this isn't the solution for internal mic'ing. It's hard to make the straps short enough to get tension and keep the mic centered. I was able to get it pretty much where I wanted but it's not perfect. We were able to get the sound dialed in but I feel maybe the Gibraltar internal mount might be the better solution IF you are running a small bass drum.

18" Kick is probably the smallest drum this will fit inside

By Keith Roman from Columbia City, IN on May 7, 2017

The Kelly SHU bass drum mount installs very easily in about 45 minutes. The instructions included are thorough, and there are several tutorials on YouTube as well. It holds the kick drum mike exactly in place as promised.

Because you have to cut and assemble your own tension mounting cords, be careful on an 18" kick drum. You will have to cut the cords as short as possible to get the tension needed. On anything smaller, or inside a floor tom, you will probably have to get some sort of combination of cords running from the front and back lug mounts to get them long enough to create enough tension, or figure out a criss-cross pattern of some sort.

The next little obstacle to overcome is getting your mike cable out through the porthole in your resonating head without it resting on the head, creating a buzz. A clothespin mounted on one of the tension cords to hold the cable in just the right place should do the trick.

Great piece.

By Paul from California on October 9, 2016

Nice piece of gear. Wish it had more mic placement options when it comes to a SHURE BETA 52 and my 20" Tama b/b kick drum. Couldn't get the 52 to my kicks sweet spot due to the build of the 52s input jack....Here's hoping I fall in love with it.
