Automatic Bluetooth Causes Interference with the Wireless Guitar Signal

By Sweetwater Customer

The Katana-Air sounds surprisingly good for a compact practice amp and the wireless concept is excellent. The ability to pick up the guitar and have the amp wake up automatically is a great idea and one of the main reasons I purchased it.

However, Bluetooth also turns on automatically when the amp powers up. In my experience this can interfere with the wireless guitar signal and cause crackling noises. Turning Bluetooth off resolves the problem, but it requires walking over to the amp and pressing the Bluetooth button each time, which defeats the convenience of the wake-up feature.

This seems like something that could likely be solved with a simple firmware option to disable Bluetooth at startup while keeping the wireless wake-up active. If Boss were to add that option, this would easily be one of the best and most convenient practice amps available.

Great Practice Amp

By Tom from Oregon

The bigger one EX might sound better but this one sounds great for the size. The convenience factor of the wireless is huge. You can get good sounds out of it without having to buy and deal with a bunch of pedals. Also it makes knocking things over with cords and moving around the house or room a lot safer without having to take your guitar off. Some who give bad reviews say they cant figure out the controls or preset sounds available online. Those folks must be real luddites and should probably stick to acoustic guitar because the way this is set up is probably the future of amps with onboard effects.

One rather big downside is that the wireless dongle does not fit in some guitars straight away and no one seems to make short extenders for them. For example Ibanez slim line guitars the jack port cutaway is too narrow. Also if your guitar has a jack that is on the bottom rear of the body it is prone to being hit so in that case I added a six inch extension cable to get the connection point to a safer spot. If you only have one guitar that you also gig with that might look kind of tacky. Either that or let the six inch cable extension just flop around. The sending unit works best on strat style guitars with a wide enough recess to fit it in directly and be protected.

I hate this amp, I think it is unusable, the controls were designed to be unlearnable, somuch potential, so little value

By Doug from Santa Maria, CA
Music Background: 60 years of noodling.

I heard some nice things on-line about this and rushed right out and bought one. Wow am I sorry. It is the first amplifier I have ever owned that I couldn't figure out how to use. No matter how much I try, I can't learn the controls, ,and they are so complex you can't fake it by pushing buttons until you have something going. I have absolutely no confidence that I can sit down with my guitar and this amp and play. I sit down, plug in the amp, plug in my guitar, and start pushing buttons hoping I will hit on something that works. After twenty minutes I get pissed off and I give up and I go find a different amp that actually works. Something heavier and less convenient no doubt, but something you can plug into turn on, find the master volume turn it up to 4, make sure the drive isn't too high and midway on everything else, and I have success starting from there, but not so with katana air. If you are smarter than I am and you can use yours, good for you. But my sympathy for people anywhere near my level.

Katana Air: a perfect practice amp.

By Jim from MN
Music Background: Guitar addict

The Boss Katana Air is a perfect practice amp. It is versatile, light-weight, and portable; it offers multiple amp models and lots of pedal options; it can run for hours on batteries; the wireless transmitter works great and has great battery life; streaming music or backing tracks through BlueTooth is simple; and the whole thing fits nicely into a backpack or small duffle bag for travel, with room left over for headphones and other gear.

Moreover, played through good headphones, it sounds outstanding! Rock, blues, classical, finger-style, folk... this little practice amp is a great practice partner.

What it cannot do, in fairness, is replace a full-sized amp. The two small speakers simply cannot fill the room with sound that offers the same depth and sparkle as a full-sized amp. The sound is very directional; perfectly adequate for quiet practice, but it cannot really stand up to a larger sized amp with 10 or 12" speakers. It models Fender clean tones beautifully, but its speakers can't compete with those in a Fender Twin.

None of this limits its value as a practice amp, where the ability to hear your sounds (privately, through headphones, or in the room at modest levels) and hone your skill is more important than shaking your neighbor's windows. At practice volumes, this little amp excels.

A Great Little Amp

By Jeff W. from Ohio
Music Background: Hobbyist

It's my main practice amp now. The battery mode and Bluetooth make it easy to move around, and I can play backing tracks on it as well. The controls and layout on it are the same as on the larger Katana amps, so if you already own one or considering getting one, the similarities are another convenience. Don't be fooled by the photos, this thing is only the size of a loaf of bread, but the sound is as big as you want. Would purchase one again.

ALL SMILES

By Bruce K. from Southern Illinois
Music Background: Older rocker

I've jammed twice so far and wore myself out the first time. Then I played for an hour or so playing my go too's and thoroughly enjoyed the experience! I have to say that this amp is the bomb! The freedom of being wireless and sounding good is priceless. I think the gain knob has a huge effect on the overall volume, especially the clean channel. I own several great amps, but realized if there was a power outage none of them would work. I'm very glad I bought it. Thanks to my new rep Tom Bradley for his expert assistance!

Windows 11

By Stephen from California

I purchased this amp a little over a year ago and love it. The wireless app on my android is great. The Windows 10 app was what I used day to day. My problem is the windows 11 apps are not ready for use and there isn't a published release date. My main system is windows and I upgraded myself out of using the Katana - Air. Its a shame.

No word of a release date or even a hint.

Better options out there

By Hugo from Arlington

In short, a decent sounding practice amp with a high price tag for a feature that doesn't really work.
The transmitter is really finicky and the amp sounds much worse when you use it.
Other similar amps are cheaper and sound as good or better.

I would like to like this amp better

By Bruce from Berkeley CA
Music Background: Play professionally for decades

I love small amps. I play electric guitar in a duo and often our gigs are house concerts in people's login rooms, with my partner singing and playing acoustic. Or small venues where I through a SM57 in front of my small amp. In the case of the Katana Air, I have three complaints. 1. The preset library available on the IOS app is weak. I was looking for a few good low gain ethereal sounds with grid modulations and reverbs. What I got are some pretty lame hi gain metal stuff. #2 The APP itself is non intuitive and hard to create your and store sounds the way you want them. #3. The wireless adaptor works in my Tele and not so well in my Strat. It occasionally makes strange noises, so wireless is good for rehearsal but I would use a cable for a gig.

For now, the best small amp in my opinion is the Yamaha THR10C, which I also own.

Awesome practice Amp

By Richard R. from Texarkana
Music Background: I have been playing Guitar,Bass, and Drums for 35 years. Mostly play in casinos now.

I bought this to upgrade from a Roland mini cube. I liked the cube, but I love my Katana Air. It is awesome for easy practice at home, and it travels easy. I always travel with a guitar when I go on vacation. It's perfect for that.

Very disappointing

By Robert from Seguin, Texas
Music Background: Band leader, musician, writer, arranger, composer.

For the price they could have included an auxiliary input. The hype given to the power output is very misleading. I experienced "dirt" and distortion even at "practice" volume levels. Easily outperformed by other practice amps I've used with 15 watts of power. Overall a very overpriced item for a very disappointing amp.

Such highs and such lows

By Robert F. from ADVANCE, NC

With the right expectations, you'll really enjoy this. If not, you'll hate it. Here's the good, bad, and ugly. The good: it's a fantastic practice amp if you don't use pedals. You keep the wireless dongle in your guitar, pick it up, and play at any moment. This made me practice more because it was always ready. Wireless and battery-operated makes it perfect for backyard practicing or party playing. Bad: you need motion to keep the dongle awake so if you use pedals, it'll fall asleep. Which wouldn't be so bad except the sounds are meh at best. In the basements, it sounds fine but in the backyard it's a little boxy (which you kinda expect). It honestly doesn't sound much better than a Roland Cube which sells for much less. So you might consider a Cube and a cheap, battery-operated multi-effect. Another small annoyance is that you need the app for the tuner which is useless because you probably already have a tuner app on your phone. Which leads to the ugly: the app that's supposed to control this is oh so terribly worthless... 1.7 rating on app store worthless. The promise that you can have all these sounds at your disposal that you can switch on the fly is a total lie because the app simply doesn't work. It constantly disconnects and often won't reconnect. In reality, you have to find a set of sounds you like (6 presets and the panel) save those (if you can actually save without disconnecting) then stick to only those sounds when you play. Ultimately, I gave this a 4 star because I do exactly this. I have 6 presets I like and use it for practice and backyard gatherings. But I never touch the app when I play. If this is how you imagine using it, then this is a great choice.

Favorite Equipment

By William C. from Sacramento, CA

This thing has to be one of my favorite pieces of equipment. Controls clone my katana 100 in the small format and yet provide crazy portability. The katana air sound app is simple and easy to use, and seems to provide a decent spread of tones. Another instance of my Rep, Aaron, pointing me in the right direction toward quality gear. Absolutely a Boss fan, and more specifically, a fan of Sweetwater.

Great idea!

By Bob S. from Eugene, OR

I bought this as a Christmas present for my son, but have to admit that I unboxed it first to try it out. He wasn't playing his Les Paul as much because it was inconvenient to set everything up each time he wanted to play, especially if he was going somewhere to play with friends. This seems perfect! Small, lightweight, and puts out a great sound for such a little guy. Lots of different voices and settings and the wireless is a great plus and works great. Can be used with batteries and he can play along with his iPhone. What's not to like?

With the help of my incredible Sales Engineer, David Merkosky who knows me well, I was introduced to the Boss Katana Air. WOW, talk about surprised and inspired. I'm very pleased with this purchase and as a long-time customer of Sweetwater, I'm thrilled with the support and thoughtful guidance the organization provides each of us everyday. Thanks Sweetwater!

The killer feature doesn't live up to the promise

By Jeremy B. from San Rafael, CA

If you're looking at this amp, the promise of wireless connectivity is probably one of the considerations, especially when you look at the premium you are going to pay for it. Sadly, the wireless transmitter just isn't there. it sounds OK until the notes start to decay, then it struggles to transmit the volume of the decaying notes and the result sounds like you have reverb in the signal path as the volume fades in and out.

With no settings changed on the amp, but a wired connection, the volume fade disappears and the tones decay as you would expect.

It's too bad, since the size is perfect, but for the premium price the wireless commands, this is just not worth it.

Exactly what I hoped for

By Matthew J. from Rock Hill, SC
Music Background: Educator, lead guitarist for the band Cyan

Awesome sound. Awesome portability. Going to use it during my band's live stream this Thursday night. All the sounds you need to practice and play with. Sits on my desk while I teach zoom/Skype lessons which gives me the option to easily have effects. This also allows the student to hear the guitar more clearly because of how close the speakers are to the computer.

Perfect for apartment jamming

By Sweetwater Customer

I used to use a multi effects pedal and headphones to jam, but this is so much more convenient. The wireless works flawlessly so far. You can just leave it in the guitar and pick it up whenever. It turns on automatically. So convenient. The sound is great, though I haven't really been able to crank it due to living conditions. The app is good too. You can save your settings and come back to them regardless of the panel settings. Highly recommend!

Katana popping noise when using wireless

By Sweetwater Customer

Been using it for a few months now... I think others have also mentioned this same issue a few times. When plugged in, no noise, when using the wireless, its right there and its annoying as hell. Wireless is a key feature as to why I paid the money for this. Otherwise, there are better amps out there.

Great sounding amp, not sure how to keep the wireless charged though. Amazing how loud it is to be so small and light. I would love to have a good output to the board cause I could go ahead and use it on stage.

The red headed stepchild of the Katana Series

By Matt from AZ

I really like the Katana series, but the Air is a big swing and a miss, here is why:
1. you can only control the air with the Boss app via bluetooth and the bluetooth and app are super buggy and either straight up doesnt connect or drops connection and is so unbelievably frustrating. (you will want to throw the amp or your device)
2. you cannot control the amp via Mac/PC this was a big miss in my opinion
3. most of the patches online are NOT compatible with the Air
4. higher gain amp sounds can be very hissy and noisy (I didnt experience this with the other Katanas)
5. it doesnt command a $... price tag for all of its limitations and issues. Save $... and get the 50w or head, then you will have mac/pc support (mac users, double check its compatible with your version of Mac OS)

I am a big fan of Boss products and the Katana series amps. I think for what you get they are amazing, unfortunately the Air is not.

Katana is Boss

By Dave from Indianapolis
Music Background: Long time player, worship team leader

I live in a space where I have to limit the size and sound of my gear, and to keep my rehearsal times relatively quiet. Wanting to do that and to hear great tone, the Katana is a fantastic little bookshelf amp!

I especially love that it's completely wireless; between the battery option and the wireless guitar connection, it's just about perfect.

Great Little Practice Amp!

By Jim R. from Fairfax, Virgina
Music Background: Hobbyist, Amateur home recording

I just received my Boss Katana Air yesterday, but wanted to provide my review already. I wanted a small, easy to use practice amp that I could use while lounging on the couch watching TV. The idea of not having to connect with a guitar cable was very appealing, and the wireless capability of this amp is fantastic. I am not sure why others have had issues with popping noises with theirs, but mine works perfectly. I can go anywhere in my apartment, and the wireless capability works exactly as expected, with absolutely no problems. Also, I can dial in heavy distortion at a low volume that won't disturb my neighbors, yet still get great tones. I have yet to get into the weeds with dialing in specific tones and effects using the app, but the basic pre-programmed amp modeling and effects are great. Clean tones sound crystal clear, and I look forward to plugging in my acoustic electric in the amp soon to use the acoustic tone setting. This is yet another great product from Boss, and I look forward to enjoying this little gem of an amp for a long, long time. Thanks to my sales engineer, Mark Magdich, for his continued outstanding customer service and recommending this amp to me!

2nd Katana I own

By Michael B. from Smithfield, ME
Music Background: 40+ years playing 6+ years building instruments 10+ years teaching

I needed a small portable amp for the music classes I teach and with both Bluetooth and wireless this freed me up to wander around the classroom and actually focus on the students. The tone and response is a perfect fit to the 100 Watt Katana head I have at the studio. Several people complained about a popping sound heard when playing wireless. I found quickly that simply plugging it back into the wireless charging dock and then reinstalling it in the guitar resolves this and the 20/30 watt power is more than enough for a large classroom or a small bar. It is surprisingly full bodied with amazing range and tone. Haven't played around with changing the effects presets yet but so far it rivals the Katana head in getting played in the studio and records very well. Worth every penny and if it had been around earlier it likely would have been the only Katana I would have purchased.

Disappointment Blues Tooth

By George from Arizona

What looked good in theory didn't work well in practice. My Katana Air/WL/T blue tooth wireless combination makes audible and annoying popping sounds when playing guitar through it, especially for lower notes. No such noise when playing with a guitar cable plugged into the INPUT jack, nor when using a different WL/T with a WM-50 receiver plugged into the Air's INPUT jack (which is also a Rube Goldberg wireless combination). I use only passive single-coil and humbucker pickups. So, either the Air's WL/T is bad or the Air's blue tooth receiver is. Not something one would expect for the cost.

Best Portable amp

By Vernon from NC

When I called my rep Brandt looking for a replacement for another portable amp. He recommended this one and I decided to give it a try. I'm very happy with this little amp. You get a great sounding amp as soon as you pick up your guitar. I like the portability of it and with the phone app, I've had a lot of fun just messing around with it. Yes, its a bit pricey, but it makes it easy to play and to keep playing.

You get what you pay for

By Danny W. from SIMI VALLEY, CA

...Yes it has no extension speaker option, and ok, the blue tooth connectivity can be frustrating. BUT - the rest of this amp is just plain awesome.... it's wireless connectivity makes it a fantastic rehearsal amp. This combined with a huge pallet of BOSS pedal sounds- all customizable, via the versatility of the smartphone APP makes this package worth every penny. It can be used in a DAW environment PLUS it's light as a feather and, when needed, battery powered for rehearsal on the go. It is not intended for a band rehearsal environment although could hang with a reasonable decibel level. There are lots additional goodness to this amp, but suffice it to say-it's well worth the money. I personally love it.

NICE AMP

By Bob from N. Syracuse
Music Background: Hobbyist

For such a small amp, this thing sounds pretty decent. It's great for practice and the convenience of it being wireless is fantastic. Just pick up your axe and start playing...easy! What I'm hoping for is a version 2.0 for the phone app, as it is quirky when it comes to connectivity. Like a few others have stated, having to re-pair can be frustrating. There are some great, usable tones available thru Tone Central and the tuner is also a plus. Hey BOSS, get working on that app update! As always, Sweetwater's service is outstanding and thanks to Paul E.

Incredible

By Jon from KC, MO
Music Background: Audio Engineer

This thing is pretty dang impressive. I bought the Katana Air for two reasons. One, I wanted a blue tooth speaker, so that I could references mixes on, and secondly, to have a quick and seamless method for flushing out ideas, and quick guitar practice moments.
I love my big boy amps, but I dont really want to burn tubes for practicing and often times, I just dont bother to fire them up for a quick jam. With the Katana I find myself jamming and playing more than I did in the past. And Its pretty dang cool that you can be streaming music from your favorite playlist, and be able to jam along and improvise along with.
The ONLY reason I did not give it a 5 star, is that the app and bluetooth connectivity is a little clunky. Meaning if you leave the house, you have to go back into your phones bluetooth settings and connect manually.
With that said the app is pretty intuitive, and the on board tuner is perfect.
The loudness and quality of sound that comes from such a small unit is astonishing. Not sure how those small stereo speakers can push the amount of air that they do - but its impressive!

By Kuanlin W. from new haven, CT

Almost perfect. The only drawback is that the transmitter won't fit into my Jem77. The input jack of my Jem is too narrow and deep, so I have to an extension adapter. Heads up for Ibanez guitar owners. Try it on my Strat is completely fine.

Boss Katana Air

By Bernard B. from NM

I really love this thing! It works exactly as advertised. Very intuitive and so easy to use, I was playing it within minutes. The tones are great for a practice amp and it has so many different effects that it's hard to imagine that you could ever try all of them. It is so light and portable it's great for jamming with buddies. I did get some very minor popping and crackling with my Ric 660, but I think it's because of the low output pickups. All of my other guitars had crystal clear sound. The app interface was easy to set up and very easy to use. There were some comments that indicated issues with getting and keeping the app up and running, but I have not had any issues with that at all. I can pick up my guitar, sit on the couch, and dial in whatever tones I want from my cell phone without getting up all the time. The interface with my music works flawlessly and I can jam along to backing tracks. I highly recommend it. And a shout out to Sweetwater - Awesome service!

Amazing Versatility with Lots of Bugs

By Justin from Central WI

I bought this to use as a practice amp and for light, stripped down band rehearsals, and it's been very good in that capacity. The Katana versatility is well documented/known, so I don't need to go into that other than to say all the usual sounds are here. It sounds really good for how small it is. You can only expect so much, but it projects a pretty surprising amount of volume which, again, has sufficed in some of my band practices scenarios where we're playing quietly. I've also used this for recording, and as is the case for the entire Katana line, the air didn't disappoint.

Now the bad... The Katana Air is completely let down by poor execution in the app (at least on Android) and some incredibly annoying popping with the wireless dongle. I could live with a buggy app (though I shouldn't have to for the insane price they're charging for these...) but since the PRIMARY feature of this amp is to be completely wireless, I really didn't expect there to be issues with the wireless plug. It's useless to the point of me not even bothering to use it anymore. Because of that, I regret my purchase, as I could've gotten even a different Katana amp for much less and with much more usability. At the end of the day, this feels like a beta run for Boss. I'm sure they'll release a version 2 in the next year that knocks it out of the park and makes this thing look really bad.

Have to give the obligatory shout out to Sweetwater and my boy Sam H. Absolutely no complaints about the customer service and highly recommend them as a retailer.

Just bought this Bluetooth amp after reading reviews and trying it out with my Strat.
This little box turns out phenomenal sound, with built-in effects that can make your guitar sound like it"s plugged into a Marshall stack.

By Bruce

I REALLY wanted to like this amp. The promise of a wireless connection, and no more guitar cables, was just too good to pass up. Unfortunately, the wireless connector causes random pops on the amp. Very annoying! Everything else is great - using the Tone Studio app, using the amp as a Bluetooth speaker, playing along with songs on your phone. If only it didn"t pop!

Practice/clinic/living room jam ultimate solution

By XIYU from PA
Music Background: Session guitarist

I needed something that's portable, something that sounds good, can play backing tracks through bluetooth and this led me to Katana Air. This small amp is exactly what I needed - no longer need to plug in my guitar, open my daw and turn on plugins - just plug and go, simple as that.

I used it for a couple clinics and small gigs for friends, the fact that it has very good battery life, can operate wirelessly and can stream bluetooth audio is totally a godsend. I can even pack this thing into my luggage, travel with it and as long as there's a guitar, I can play anywhere I want to.

Guys, if you're looking for a practice amp for these purposes, really, nothing beats Katana Air.

I'm in love with this amp so much that I can't look at my old amp anymore. Using the amp wireless works fine. This is the perfect home amp for me because when it gets late, I can use my actual headphones instead of using the converter from 1 x 1/4 to 1 x 1/8.

There's 2 things I noticed with this amp though.

1. When I power it on and put the wireless receiver on my guitar, there's a buzzing sound coming through the amp. It usually always goes away after 5-7 minutes. Not sure if you need to get it "warmed up" or something but after you wait (if you have the same problem) you can enjoy greatness.

2. THE APP FOR THIS AMP IS COMPLETELY TRASH. Once you try to connect it, your phone will recognize it's connected but you need to disconnect it from your phone and re-try until you officially see the amp on the app itself. I got it to work 3 times but if I and multiple people didn't have to do all of that, the amp would be amazing. You can set your tone precisely to how you want it without using any knobs or buttons on the amp itself. Sad cause I wanted to use different custom presets without remembering the positions of the knobs. Also on the app there's a integrated tuner. But like I said the app is trash. You can try it out for yourself and if your willing to do all that work to try and connect, good luck.

ALSO if you get the app to work, once you hit your "recent apps" button on your phone, you would need to reconnect the amp ALL OVER AGAIN.

Pretty sweet amp but bad app design and bluetooth connectivity

By Victor from California
Music Background: Play jazz, Bossa Nova, and soft melodic stuff!

Many reviewers already pointed out on how great this amp is and the fact that many details have been really well thought out.
Everything works great hardware-wise except that, for some reason, I get a hiss with many effects when plugging in any of my three acoustic guitars. Electric guitar seems to work fine.
The weakest part of Katana Air is in the apps that are, unfortunately for Roland, are advertised as one of the attractions for this product.
1. Every time you launch the app, you are asked to pair with the amp -- highly impractical.
2. The Bluetooth connection does not stay solid and, frequently, you have to reconnect.
3. Being a blind musician, it's important to me that the software I use is compatible with my assistive technology, screen reader in this case.
Well, Roland quite failed on this account. I have been going back and forth with their customer support in the U.S. but no results so far.

Great little practice amp

By David T. from Alpharetta, GA

First let me say that Sweetwater"s customer service is the best in the business... This amp was an exchange because of an issue I had with another amp. Sean was great and fixed the problem quick and within a few days Fedex is ringing the door bell with my exchange. Love this company!

At first I was skeptical about this amp... I wanted to get an amp for my office that was quick, easy and had some on board effects... considering all the amps I have in my studio these traits are not typically what I look for and figured I would go for it...I have been playing with this amp all day and I am extremely impressed by the sound of this versatile little beast... Wireless is pretty darn good with little latency... cool little amp! Dig it!

SO STOKED

By Charles
Music Background: playing a couple years

I absolutely love this little amp. It's perfect for practicing at home or playing at the beach. This little guy is loud enough to get me in trouble and sounds great. In the past I often ended up playing my electric guitar acoustically because I could not be bothered to run a cable, plug in, and wait for the tubes to warm up. But not anymore. I find myself playing more and more. I love using the app to switch between different sounds and effects. It is great for playing along with backing tracks or just listening to music. Super cool being able to walk around the house without being tied down by a cable. It is kind of like having the simplicity of an acoustic guitar with a bluesy crunch tone one minute and a filthy metal tone the next. Thus far after a month of using this amp I am really really happy I got it. Worth every penny!

Great Practice Amp

By JLW from Crosby, TX

So far this has been a great practice amp, I must say that I am truly impressed. I have no prior experience with Boss products other than pedals and this has motivated me to pursue the 100W amp. The software is easy to use with some great tones available in the library. If you're new to this type of technology Boss has made it pretty simple to use and accessible for anyone. The wireless and Bluetooth both work exceptionally well. One other user expressed some fizzle sounds at first, I also experienced those issues but once i synced it to the application the issue disappeared. Great Buy, totally impressed, thanks Sweetwater and Boss for putting up the demo video which influenced my decision to take the step into bluetooth and wireless. The only half star deduction comes from the price, the amp is pretty expensive in my opinion for an entry level practice amp.

Blown Away BUT.........

By J. from FL
Music Background: Guitarist/Singer-Songwriter

The Big Con. The Katana Air s Tone Studio App will NOT work if your Android device s operating system is less than 5.1. I have a 500 dollar Galaxy S5. It s only a little over a year old. The operating system is not upgradable via my carrier. I also have an Apple 5s brand new in the box, BUT, from what I ve been told in a Katana group for IOS the operating system has to be at least 10.1. So the 5s won t work either.

I ve called Boss and asked them why the Air s Tone Studio wasn t available via USB to a PC or a Mac. They were very helpful btw, But, "for now we want to keep the Air completely wireless....maybe some time in the future we will make the Air PC/Mac friendly. Boss assumed then and I did too that I could upgrade my system to 6.0 but Samsung doesn t allow my carrier upgrades for the Galaxy S5. So I won t be able to use Tone Studio for now.

Boss could solve the Tone Studio problem very easily by making the Air PC and Mac friendly. I m not the only one that s had issues with the Katana Air s Tone Studio. I ve seen in forums on-line peeps complaining and they may not be aware it s their Android/IOS s operating system. Ironically, it was Boss that helped me figure out>it was my phone Not the Air. Why they didn t make the Tone Studio available for all operating systems on Android n IOS, is beyond me.

The Pros. The wireless system on the Katana Air is excellent. I ve heard that it has a range of about 75 feet!! There is no "coloration" of the sound when using the wireless system. The Acoustic/Electric, Clean n Crunch channels are absolutely fantastic. The ability to add effects takes the Katana Air to another level. The Delay n Reverb are excellent and the modulation effects are really good>especially the phaser. The Boss Blues Driver, pre-loaded into the Air is such a fantastic pedal. When combined with the Crunch channel WHOA!!! It s like having another "Brown" channel!! Except there s no "fizzy" sound.

There is a bit of "fizzy" sound going on when the Lead and Brown channel are pushed to 100% gain on the Katana Air. I own five other Katana s, all the 100 watt models, and two Mini Katanas and they don t have any fizzy sound going on. This isn t necessarily a Con, as it can be fixed within the Tone Studio .I can t do it for the above stated reasons lol, but I know on the bigger Katanas by adjusting the "global eq" a player can get the overdrive sound their looking for. Or, just back down the gain to about 1 O clock. A player can also "mask" the fizzy sound by adding delay n reverb.

The Katana Air is imo, the best bedroom amp out there even with the Tone Studio App problem. It get s really loud. Try setting the Clean channel, the Master to 1 o clock, the volume to 1 o clock and the gain to 2 o clock...then turn on the Blues Driver>Wow!! It s like tube amp loudcheck your Android or IOS device s "operating system" before buying the Katana Air.

Really fun

By Greg S. from Half Moon Bay, CA

This sounds amazing. The wireless is very fast (you can't tell it's wireless while playing). Boss tone studio on the app has a ton of great sounds--same that are available for the GT-100.

Only 4.5 stars because:
- The Boss Tone Studio Android app on a Pixel 2 won't pair with the device (no problem with the iOS device). So there are some bugs somewhere to be fixed.
- The LED indicators on the buttons are covered by your finger when you press them. This is not normally a problem but the bluetooth button needs to be held until the light blinks...except you can't see the light.

Perfect

By Mark E. from Chicagoland
Music Background: Guitarist since 1975

This amp is great for quick jams along with songs from your phone or computer. You can run the line out with or without amp modeling. Sound quality is exceptional in spite of it's size. It's the only amp i use at home for classic rock, acoustic, blues and jazz. It's well worth the cost because it does what all Katana amps do. I don't have to put it away or practice in the basement, and it doubles as a Bluetooth stereo speaker. There is no latency for the wireless guitar plug and the batteries last quite a while. Trust me, you need this!!
