Fender Kingman Acoustic-electric Bass - Shaded Edge Burst Reviews

4-string Acoustic-electric Bass with Spruce Top, Sapele Back and Sides, Nato Neck, and Walnut Fingerboard - Shaded Edge Burst

Here at Sweetwater, we love basses of all shapes and sizes, and Fender’s Kingman acoustic-electric bass has us glued to our seats whenever someone is plucking the strings. Fender settled on the Kingman bass design after taking notes from their iconic electric guitar designs. Part of the California Player series, the Kingman rules the land and sea of the West Coast, evoking a sense of adventure and freedom. To elicit these charming tones, the Kingman bass features a solid spruce top and sapele back and sides for full, rich, articulate tone. The nato Jazz Bass neck is cut to a slim “C” shape and the walnut fingerboard ends in a manageable 30-inch scale. Then, you can step into the electric realm thanks to an equipped Fishman Presys pickup/preamp system.

Very Sweet Bass

By Patrick B from New York on April 22, 2024 Music Background: Active Musician 20 plus years

Action and playability excellent right out of the box. Practically arrived in perfect tune. I own a few acoustic, (full scale) basses. Was a bit concerned about the shorter scale. Those concerns were quickly diminished when I began to play it. I can comfortably climb to the 15th fret. Plays much like a 34 inch and better. All my AEBs are super convenient to play, just pick up and play. But unplugged, they are only good for self practice. However this baby plugged in is a beast!!!! Best one in my arsenal and can play with it in my full band NP. Love it. Thanks to Ethan, my sales rep. For being highly responsive, both before and after my purchase. Sweetwater is a a great company.

Best value

As a veteran bass player for 50 years, I recently took delivery of a beautiful shaded burst Kingman. This is my second acoustic bass. In short, I love it. Finish is excellent for this price range and setup was good.
Supplied strings were changed to tape wound and bridge adjusted down, nut lowered. Neck relief is now near flat with about 3 thousand at 7th fret.
Sound is clear and volume marginally adequate for an unplugged setting. This is to be expected for this concert body size.
Plugged in is another story. Excellent sound overall and balanced.
This bass is best suited plugged in. Well balanced to hold and the 30 inch scale very comfortable. Installed tuners are smooth but may install Grover Titans later. This bass fits well into my collection and will be used for practice and smaller outings. I plan to keep it handy and make it my "go to" bass at home. Thank you Fender and Sweetwater for a fine product and great service.
At this price point, this bass is hands down the best choice.

The best acoustic bass I've ever touched.

By Justin Brooks from Macon, GA on October 25, 2023 Music Background: Professional musician, bass player for over 15 years

This thing is awesome. Punchy, responsive, resonate, and sonically as capable plugged or unplugged, this bass is dope! I don't have the room for a stand up in my home or the little car that I drive. I do absolutely have room for this guy, though, and the acoustic funk fills a room, just as well. I don't have the fireside fantasy a lot of acoustic players have, but I do absolutely have a life where I spend the majority of my time away from home and this guy gives me the ability to practice without the need of an amp or pedals. If someone looks you in the eye and tells you there's no practical application for an acoustic electric bass, you slap them. You don't need those lies. When I plugged it up for the first time, I was *pleasantly* surprised with the quality of the tone, the sharpness of the strings, and that acoustic-y punch. The cable jack is actually also the strap lock... which is pretty dope. Kudos to Fender for the creativity. Also, the jazz neck on this thing is so super playable and comfy. If you've ever owned a jazz bass, you'll feel right at home. I had worried that the body may be a bit unwieldy, but it sits comfortably in the lap without a strap, and straps up super comfortably, as well. I enjoy moving my right hand all over the strings to get different sounds, and I'm already amazed at the difference in tones and tricks I can pull off on this thing. All in all, I think I will always have this guy with me and never be caught unprepared for an impromptu jam. Just for that, I can't rate this bass highly enough.
