Neumann KM 184 Cardioid Small-diaphragm Condenser Microphone - Matte Black Reviews
At Sweetwater, we have microphones to handle even the most specialized applications. The Neumann KM 184 is the perfect example. Need a microphone to record percussion, cymbals or brass instruments? The KM 184 is capable of handling high sound pressure levels with ease - as high as 138dB before overloading. But it's also extremely quiet, making it an excellent choice for capturing the subtle nuances of acoustic guitars and orchestral instruments. And you get that classic Neumann sound!

acoustic guitar application - everything i hoped for
Setting up a home studio and decided it was time to take a plunge and see if mics like this really were worth the cost. really does a great job on my acoustic guitar I'm running it through a WARM preamp sounds fantastic
A Staple for Acoustic
I've got about four months experience with these. I liked the first one enough that I bought a second (although lately I favor pairing it with a ribbon). It's always one of my first grabs for acoustic guitar. A lot of times, I don't even go to anything else. When I shoot it out vs my other SDCs and LDCs it almost always stays in the mix. When I want something bright, clean, and pleasant this Is the one. I like it best about 18" away from the guitar directly in front of the 7-9th fret pointed towards the neck/body joint.
Love on Acoustic Guitar
I have a lot of mics to choose from. Take the price and name of all of them and this is my favorite mic on acoustic guitar now. I'm tracking as I type and it just sounds great. Like another review I wish I had bought more
What was missing
this mic....wow...why didn't I buy a stereo pair. Is my only regret.
If you are recording or micing acoustic guitar, this is it
.stop wasting money buying anything else,!!!
Excellent for acoustic guitar
Purchased and received a pair of these a few days ago. Implemented these immediately in my home studio and these capture the nuances of an older martin guitar beautifully. Very pleased.
The Real Deal
I"ve got a pretty good mic locker and for some reason I put off buying this mic for far too long. I"ve been using the original for a long time, I"ve got several mics that fall into the basket of solutions that the 184 provides in the studio, but nothing I"ve used compares on acoustic instruments. There is an excellent balance of accuracy and polish to this mics reproduction. No reason to touch the eq if you"re in a decent room, tons of headroom, strong but balanced lows, and the 9k bump is never harsh...it just provides an open and airy feel even in a fairly dead space. Paired with a couple of good room mics this is the absolute answer to acoustic instrument micing. Get a couple. As always, my service was great and I"ll always be a Sweetwater guy as a result.
Use it on my amp/electric guitar works great
I call this microphone, of course most politically INCORRECT, the midget mic. Apologies to carnies and circus folk ....most sincerely of course. It works wonders. Right now I have an AEA N22 ribbon on the right and on the left the Neumann KM184 condenser mic. Sounds great as well as carrying with it large sound that you wouldn't expect necessarily out of a small diaphragm condenser microphone. Go ahead and get two of them - you'll never know what you'll need em for. Pairing one of these with a ribbon like an AEA or Royer I think mixes well with just about anything you throw at it.
Staple
After getting my second KM184 my steel pan recordings just opened up. I really enjoy these. Thanks to Jeremy for all the great customer support
neumann KM184
Rig. Acoustic Guitar-neumann-mogami gold cable-beringer phantom power-mogami gold cable- fishman solo amp.
I NEEDED this mic! So when sweetwater announced their fantastic financing I jumped on it. All the sweetwater reviews are pretty much on target. It's far and away the best mic I've ever owned (and the most costly)
I look at this mic as an instrument unto itself. An investment quality mic. If you want the sound of your guitar and nothing but and are uber critical of your sound, take the plunge.
Sure enough, it came in a cardboard box. Two reasons why this might be. 1. Neumann figured this mic would go into a studio mic locker or something similar and there would be no need for a cheap bag. 2. Nothing about the Neumann company is cheap, so to include a protective case would certainly add to the cost.
Ryan Sloan my sales rep got it delivered to my door in 24 hrs, and I received it on my birthday! How cool is that. Sweetwater rocks!
Neumann KM 184
I purchased this mic after buying my first Neumann......my instincts couldn't have been better. This is by far the best pencil style condenser I've ever used. I love it on the Hi-Hat, Acoustic Guitar, and recently used in recording a church choir. Don't think twice on this one.
Cardboard case? Really?
I just received my KM 184 and I was shocked that it comes in a cardboard box. I bought a Blue mic for around $200 and it had a wooden case. I guess I can be thankful it didn't come in a paper bag, but I really expected more from Neumann for an $850 mic.
Love my KM 184's
Absolutely magical on acoustic guitar. The clarity will blow you away. Good for overheads, great for hat.
Living Christmas Tree
Back in the late 90's, we used 10 of these mics on our churches giant Living Christmas Tree. Gave great coverage of the choir and good isolation from the orchestra. They were great mics.
