Excellent Headphones for the $
AKG is a name that you know if you've been around audio for any length of time. They are a trusted name in all types of studio and live application microphones and are also know for making excellent affordable headphones. I have owned a pair of the K240s for 30 years and other than having to have the cord replaced (because my parrot got a hold of it and chewed it) they have been flawless performers. I am a drummer and use these for practicing - they allow me to hear the music, but also allow my drums to come through the semi open design. They are very comfortable and I can wear them for hours. I have a recording studio and like to check my mixes on several speakers and headphones and these give me an honest representation of my mix (although my primary mix cans are the Beyerdynamic DT770s). For the money, you won't find a more balanced, more comfortable set of cans.
Lacking low end, but guitars sound delicious
Knowing next to nothing about headphones, I saw these guys come up on one of those "10 Great Budget Headphones" articles, saw the price tag, and decided those were the ones for me. When they got here, I put them on and noticed they're pretty darn comfy and light. I listened to some tunes and tried playing some video games and that's when I was really disappointed. The lows are pretty quiet. Music sounds thin and sometimes a little boxy and the bass guitar doesn't really come through the mix. Video games are not very immersive without the rumbly low end.
I was about to put these things back in the box to send them back, but I had to teach a guitar lesson the next morning over Zoom. I decided to give these guys one more chance, and as I was teaching, I realized I was hearing so much detail in my student's playing that I've never heard before.
I've been meaning to set up my pedalboard for an ampless guitar rig, and sheesh my guitar sounds amazing through these things. There's so much articulation and the low end doesn't ever get boomy, even on the neck pickup.
TWO GONE BAD...
I bought two of these packages for my studio. Had to send the first set back because only one side worked. Now the second pair just went out in the middle of a session. Glad I had extra phones in the studio. Once a fluke, twice a problem. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THESE. Apparently there are quality control issues when TWO IN A ROW HAVE LOST ONE SIDE OF THE CANS. Normally I'm a fan of AKG gear, but not these headphones. Do not waste your money. Maybe that's why they're bundled - to get rid of them? I will be sending back MY SECOND RETURN on this item.
