Chorus/Vibrato FX Pedal with True Bypass Switching

From subtle textural movement to warbling trembulations, the Walrus Audio Julia V2 analog chorus/vibrato pedal — now featuring updated artwork from designer Adam Forster —is a master at sonic landscaping. Its feature set extends far beyond the usual suspects (rate, depth). An analog LFO with waveform switch toggles between sine and triangle wave shapes, enabling more reserved or dramatic effects as occasions demand; an LFO LED blinks in time for visual feedback. Most unique to the Walrus Audio Julia V2 is the Lag control, which determines how much “swing” each LFO sweep has. Together with the Depth control, Julia’s Lag knob really takes this pedal into a new realm of sound-shaping possibility. A fully continuous blend control dials between dry, chorus, and vibrato sounds. True bypass switching preserves your tone when Julia is out of the loop.

Sounds great, but

By JWB from Missouri

Lots of versatility. Sounds great. But why the hell is there a flashing light when the pedal isn't even engaged. This is version 2, why did walrus not add a switch to turn the light off. It is incredibly distracting. Buy some black electric tape (at least 2 layers are needed due to it being so bright) at the same time you buy this pedal to cover up the right LED.

The best thing Sweetwater sells?

By Sweetwater Customer from Austin
Music Background: Engineer/Producer for 20 years

This is a great chorus pedal. My favorite effect for guitar is chorus. I almost never play guitar with out it. I've used several and this one stands out for a few reasons.

The controls - You have super useful knobs for "lag" and a "d-c-v." You also get a switch that changes the LFO from a sine wave to a triangle wave. The lag knob when turned up makes the sound wobbly and more weird. the d-c-v knob is a mix knob. So d is for dry (little effect). The c is for chorus where the dry signal and the effect are mixed. And v is for vibrato, so mostly effect little to no dry signal. These controls offer sounds that most chorus pedals cant achieve. So are those sounds any good? YES. This pedal was clearly made by craftsmen who care deeply about music and modulation. For example try turning the lag up and turn the mix to dry. Try switching from a sine wave to a triangle some riffs sound noticeably better when you make the switch.

The rate light - There is a light in the bottom right corner that blinks in accordance to where the rate knob is. This is surprisingly useful. You can glance and get an idea if the rate will be an 1/4 note or an 1/8 note and so on. One of those things that you dont know you need, but then once you have it you never want to be without it.

So I think its fair to say that this pedal has features that other pedals dont. But what's more is the style, the cool-factor, and the unboxing experience (which I wont spoil for you).

Walrus Julia

By Sweetwater Customer

AMAZING chorus pedal. My first Walrus pedal and not my last. Sounds better than any other chorus pedal I have ever heard. Thick, wavy and luxurious tones. Solid construction. Worth every penny.

This is the best Chorus pedal. Period

By Michael D. from SHARONVILLE, OH
Music Background: Lead guitarist for Milli-Vanilli

I've tried numerous chorus pedals and this one is the best, hands down. I've even tried the Boss Waza Chorus pedal, (which was good), but if you read all the chorus pedal ratings on the web, most of them mention this Julia chorus pedal near the top. (and they're right). I don't like a heavy chorus effect most of the time, but this pedal is perfect. (At least for me)

Top of the line

By Bill

I have several chorus pedals and this is the most flexible and fun. Between the LAG and the D-C-V (Dry-Chorus-vibrato) controls, you can get a wide range of beautiful to creatively borderline sounds. It's good clean or distorted. It's a well made and well thought out pedal.
My only complaint is that the LEDs are too bright for a dark stage. That Can be corrected with little dots of dark tape (actually made to dim LEDs).

Amazing and versatile

By Sweetwater Customer from OR
Music Background: Music Teacher and Guitarist of 17 years

It's just that good. While playing around with it is fun I recommend looking up some Youtube reviews on this because there are so just so many good options with this pedal. It's honestly crazy top see the variety of tones that people can make with this pedal. It's been on my board for years and I've never considered swapping it

didnt like it

By George from Las Cruces nm
Music Background: pro

The rate light on this pedal always flashes! You have to cut power to the pedal to get it to stop. The over all sound is not that great, I have had pedals that are easier to use and sounded better! This pedal cost $ bucks that is crazy for how complicated it is to use and how hard it is to dial in a nice chorus sound!

A modern take on chorus/vibrato

By Roland G. from Bellflower, CA

Let me tell you why this is my favorite chorus pedal. It is because it's also a vibrato pedal. Not only is it a 2 in 1 circuit, but the blend knob is what makes it unique and allows you to dial in a one of a kind modulation sound. While you can dial in traditional 80s chorus, just know that this style of chorus has a bit more of a metallic sound rather than the 80s lush chorus. It sounds great, but just know it is a more modern chorus sound. Lastly, this pedal is mono, but if you want stereo sounds, go for the Juliana rather than this.

One Chorus To Rule Them All..

By Rob W. from NC
Music Background: Playing Guitar Since 1979

Many effects pedals, in an attempt to provide the widest possible range of sounds, do so with the comprimise of never having done any one thing great. So we buy multiple pedals of the same type; 2 Delays, 2 Reverbs, 4 Drives, etc... Thankfully, that is not the case with the Walrus Audio Julia.
The Julia has an amazing array of Chorus sounds and does them all in such a beautifully, musical way that I can't imagine ever needing another Chorus. It perfectly compliments all my other pedals. I never turn it off.
The Mix & Lag knobs are where (most of) the magic lies. Imo, every Chorus pedal should have these fuctions as standard. Maybe one day they will be, idk. Until then, there is little real competion that I can see.
Although simple to use, there IS a sort of learning curve as little tweaks make big changes. I've had it for a month now and I'm still finding more ways to use it. It's easy to get complacent though. As I said peviously, every setting sounds glorious. If you are a "set it & forget it" kind of player, then you'll quickly find that sweet spot.
Finally, I've read some reviews that mention noise. My Julia makes zero noise. Zero. I strongly suspect that these issues are due to underpowered and/or non-isolated power supplies. The Julia draws 100ma. And almost any modulation effect should be plugged into a good, isolated power brick anyway. (I have a Strymon Zuma... so there). If you're running an expensive pedalboard on a cheap daisy chain, then you get what you get. Don't blame the pedals.

This is a great pedal, with three knobs and a micro switch that create a wide variety of chorus effects.

Excellent Pedal

By Sweetwater Customer

The Julia's control knobs allow players a wide range of sounds. I play a Strat through a Fender and sometimes a Marshall, and the Julia richly complements both.

Simply perfect

By Brady M. from Maine

You want that delightful chorus tone, and you want to buy the best pedal possible to achieve that tone… look no further - you just found it. I don't think I've turned this pedal off once in the two weeks I've had it. Using it to achieve Gilmour tones - more than capable of recreating any chorus tone you can think of

Need Chorus? Just buy it.

By Daniel G. from Bakersfield, CA

What are you waiting for? You've gotten this far. The hype is correct. Julia is a fantastic chorus in the highly competitive chorus line-up. She does everything a chorus should do and more!

Fantastic chorus, awesome control of the sound

By David C. from Mars
Music Background: Funsies, nothing professional

I finally bought a chorus pedal because I cut my teeth on Duff and GnR and love the sound on bass. Super happy with this pedal and I have been using it for practice pretty non-stop.

By the way, jazz really hasn't worked with chorus but imma keep trying.

Great on bass

By Austin C. from Grand Blanc, MI

Less complicated than a lot of Walrus Audio's other pedals. I keep everything at 12:00 for a perfect-sounding chorus.

Magical

By Michael M. from Germantown, TN

I wasn't positive I'd like this when I was looking for a chorus, but it's great. It's broader than a Boss CE-2 and I can go from subtle to Robert Smith to ambient texture. There isn't a bad setting on it, despite the range.

And aesthetically, it's really cool to me on my board. That's kinda silly, but does make an impact on how good I feel about a purchase.

If you want a dedicated Chorus pedal, I'd pick this over anything.

Loose parts , dirty signal path noise

By David S. from Philadelphia area.
Music Background: Music professional 30+ years.

I have a show to do tonight and I needed a tremolo for a very special song so I went and bought a Julia v2 platinum edition. When I opened the nifty pull string bag I noticed the foot switch was totally loose and falling inside. Ok so I tightened up the nut and washer and had to open the bottom to make sure it wasn't twisted inside. Then I pluggged her in. I'm using a tc audio isolated single power supply and it was hissing and noisy as hell. My ES 335 sounded like a cheap single coil in a room full of neon. (Noise wise) so I switched to my voodoo lab pedal power and turned off the dimmer in my space with no difference in the noise. Needless to say I'm very disappointed that I cannot use this pedal for what it was designed for. Also it has plenty of room for a 9v battery which should be an option as well.

So much luck with V1, I had to get V2

By Rob from Indianapolis

The first version of Julia has been a staple on my pedalboard for years, and is rarely, if ever, off.
It has a unique color palette that is difficult to find in another chorus or vibrato pedal, so I got another one for my alternate board. It has a great chorus AND a great vibrato effect, but I lean a bit toward vibrato with the lag set at about 11 o'clock. There's a lot of magic to be found in that vicinity.

My Favorite Chorus Sound In the World

By Sweetwater Customer

Chorus can either be cheesy sounding or stunningly beautiful. The Julia is stunningly beautiful. Definitely my favorite chorus pedal and the fact that it does a beautiful vibrato too makes an obviously choice

Awesome Pedal

By Jonathan

This was my first time buying from Sweetwater, and I was blown away by the customer service and product availability. My original chorus pedal was not in stock at the time, but my sound engineer recommended I try the Julia. I'm so happy that I did - this is the best pedal on my board right now. The Julia was exactly what my tone was missing - I have it on all the time now whenever I am jamming. It creates such a fuller tone and rounds out my sound even when I have distortion on. Definitely recommend.

Just What I Was Looking For!

By Zach from Indianapolis
Music Background: Worship Pastor

After getting into chorus, I spent a lot of time researching and listening to as many chorus pedals as I could. There are a TON of great options out there, but I kept coming back to the Walrus Audio Julia because of its mix of flexibility and simplicity and its incredible sound. I keep mine at a subtle-to-mid-level chorus setting, but I love being able to easily dial into an amazing vibrato sound when I want. Every sound you can find in this unit is warm and luscious without losing out on the bite that modulation gives you.
Because I tend to have my chorus be a "set it and forget it" effect, I don't miss the tap tempo that the Julianna offers (or the similarly priced JHS Emperor). Both are fantastic pedals, but the Julia does the trick for me and I'm very happy I made this purchase. If you're looking for incredibly smooth chorus and vibrato sounds that both mesh well with your sound and help you pop out in a mix, this is the way to go.

You could get a Boss or MXR like everyone else or...

By Alejandro U. from Georgia
Music Background: Recording/Touring Musician

Look, there are many chorus pedals out there. I have seen people complain about the noise, and the truth is that once you are playing with a band or recording, you don't hear anything. If you told me to rate this pedal when I received it 7 months ago, I would've rated it a 4 out of 5. It takes time to learn this pedal. There are a lot of subtle changes you can make to create many sounds. You can set "lag" to 3 o'clock and depth to 12 o'clock, and then try doing it the other way around and you will be scratching your head to figure out which one fits the sound you are going for more. Take that example I just gave and apply it to any setting variation. Most Chorus pedals have that "one" sound that is usable. The julia is so versatile. I recorded multiple guitar parts (chorus and vibrato) on a record recently and each one is unique. Julia makes it possible. This is not the best chorus/vibrato of all time. There is no such thing. It is all subjective. However, I hope if someone who cares about tone as much as I do ends up reading this, contact a local store who carries this pedal and bring your gear to see how this pedal interacts with your setup.

Best Chorus Pedal I've Used

By Zachary M. from VT
Music Background: Former gigger, now hobbyist

This is hands' down the best chorus pedal I've used. Yes, it can do the typical BOSS chorus, and it can get pretty close to a Small Clone. But those guys always announce themselves ... they say, "Hello, you're using chorus now." Most simple pedals' 'subtle' sound is just the same thing turned down so far you can hardly hear it, and a lot of other pedals that are tweakable enough to get a few different great subtle sounds are annoyingly complicated.

Julia has a couple massive advantages over every other chorus pedal I've played - you have funky, genius knobs like lag and blend, which can give you a wider variety of sounds that you can use, while still being squarely in chorus territory, and not off in tweaker land. I've played 'more advanced' chorus pedals that let me dial things in super-specifically, but then I had to play around with some of my OTHER pedals to make that work. Once you've got Julia set, the only issues you'll ever have changing settings is if you're using another modulation or timing-based effect, and you're out of sync.

The other thing she's got that I don't think people pay enough attention to outside of OD pedals is that it's just an amazingly pure-sounding circuit. No matter what else I have going on in my chain and which amp, there's absolutely nothing that this adds or removes from my signal other than its intended effect. A lot of modulation pedals loose a little high and low, and they cover that up by doing a little in-pedal EQ. With Julia, I do get more treble and bass in the peaks and valleys as the effect is working; but in the middle, or with the depth knob turned down, my tone is exactly the same as before I click the pedal on. Again - nothing changes. If you like your signal before Julia, you'll like it after - you don't have to go through and program a new amp setting to work better with your chorus.

She's also got an unadvertised party trick: if you hold the switch down, it'll turn on for as long as you're holding it. Let go, it goes off. So you can play a line clean, then one with chorus. Then a few fills, then some chorused chords, then some more clean lines ...

I was never a chorus guy, but I needed one for a project. I watched a lot of videos, tried a bunch in store, and bought this one honestly thinking it might go back. But now it's one of my favorite pedals. I guess I just never used something so transparent and subtle before.

I also don't normally rant so much about product. Trust me, it's that good.

WARNING: BUY ANOTHER BRAND

By David from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Music Background: Experienced Lead/Rhythm guitarist.

Walrus or Walmart?

Walrus Audio Julia and every other product made by walrus have been the worst quality and most over hyped pedals I've ever used/purchased in my lifetime.

First, you can still hear your signal volume and tone moving with the flash of the "rate" light when the pedal is OFF/bypassed.

Second, right out of the box the input jacks were so loose that my patch cables wouldn't even stay in while the pedal was mounted.

Third, the DC power input jack is so far recessed into the pedal that I had to buy a special extra long nosed straight DC cable and it still is a reach.

Fourth, not only is the DC jack recessed, but it is also incredibly loose and my power WILL completely cut all sound in the middle of playing if I step on any of my other pedals due to the fact that the Julia input is messed up.

Final, the impact of the Walrus Julia on my guitars tone, pick attack, dynamics, volume, and background static is absolutely atrocious.

The second I plugged in my Walrus Audio Julia for the first time was the second that I decided id never be buying another Walrus product for again.

Don't even get me started on how poor quality the Walrus power supplies are.. for an example of how much they "care" about their products just go look at their Instagram and notice that all they do is post videos of them messing around at work and not actually working.

Walrus is a scam. You've been warned.

Give it Some Time

By Banjo B. from Sacramento, CA
Music Background: Musician and Producer

First thing's first, pedal is beautiful and built well. However, it took me a couple of weeks to warm up to this pedal sonically. I already had really nice chorus, flanger, and tremolo pedals, and based on my first impressios of the Julia I was starting to think that I couldn't justify the space on my board because it was not giving me anything materially different from the others. But I kept experimenting and I found that it really does its own thing. It can be VERY different from any chorus pedal, and when you place the mix knob halfway between Chorus and Vibrato, the effect can be quite sublime. It works with overdriven tones, but it shines on clean tones. I adore my other mod pedals, but this one now has a place right up there with them. What I ended up doing was splitting my board. I have one board for all my drive pedals that hits the front of my Marshall and another one for my mods and time based pedals in the FX Loop, and all is good...

The Most Flexible Chorus Pedal

By Joe S. from Pennsylvania
Music Background: Songwriting , Audio Production

4-8-20: I bought the V1 here on sale.
I learned about this about from Knobs on YouTube last year. It's the ultimate chorus IMO. Why? Because it can be as subtle as you need or as ridiculously wet and glistening as an old The Fixx tune or any other 80's reference. It lets you acquire the effect of a chorus pedal without immediately sounding 80's/90's... Which it can totally do if that's what your looking for.

And I'm in love with the Vibrato (An effect I never thought I would ever dig), it lets me have the seasick tape warble (wow & flutter) effect from tape machines. Changing the wave pattern really lets you dial in your needs if you have to be obnoxious and obvious or subtle love tap to the signal. I also really enjoy the quality of the build and the footswitch, probably the smoothest I ever stepped on for a clicking switch.
My only gripe with V1 is the side jacks. I like jacks on the top. But hey $... for a new Julia? I'm not complaining.

Thanks sweetwater for doing a great sale during a pandemic. Now I can modulate myself out of this mess.
-Joe
