Squier Paranormal Jazzmaster XII 12-string Electric Guitar - Lake Placid Blue Reviews

12-string Solidbody Electric Guitar with Poplar Body, Maple Neck, Laurel Fingerboard, and 2 Single-coil Pickups - Lake Placid Blue

Through their Paranormal series, Fender’s introducing a host of unusual, unexpected, and downright distinct designs that put a compelling spin on the classics. Though the Jazzmaster body has seen plenty of configurations throughout the years, none have positively intrigued Sweetwater’s guitar gurus quite like this Jazzmaster XII! Masterfully blending vintage-style panache with contemporary appointments, this 12-string Squier sounds as fantastic as it looks. Fender-designed pickups, a graphite-reinforced maple neck, and a hybrid, fully adjustable hardtail bridge are just a few of the details to set this offset apart, all the while ensuring you’ve got the structural stability and sonic flexibility to squeeze every drop of tone out of this axe’s 12-string setup.

Amazing 12 string electric from Squire

By Billy from Rock Hill, SC on November 10, 2023 Music Background: Hobbyist

When I saw this guitar come out, I was so interested. Could Squire make a 12 string electric at this price ? They did. Fit and finish is really good. I would recommend to anyone looking for a 12 string electric.

Holy smokes Paranormal for a win!

By Anthony Hinton from AURORA, CO on September 26, 2023 Music Background: Guitar player for 45+ years.

I couldn't wait for the new batch so I went with a demo and man am I glad. I was put off by the "demo" stamp at first but Darius Beatz reassured me it was nothing to be overly concerned about.
The guitar showed up super quick with no compression on the packaging. The guitar was double packed and well protected.
Surprisingly it was fairly close to pitch and not horribly out of tune. It was intoned pretty much spot on (it's a 12 string after all) with a decent setup. The electronics are good and the pups offer the clarity I was wanting. This guitar won't be used for distortion or full gain work. I'm using an acoustic setting on my Zoom splitting to 2 low watt tube amps, the tone sparkling and clear.

I have nothing but good things to say about this particular guitar.

Disclaimer: I have only played it for 30 minutes and haven't gone over it with a magnifying glass but I'm fairly confident on my position.

Not Your Father's Squier, Part Deux

By Eddie Fliess from HILLIARD, OH on September 19, 2023

I bit the bullet again and bought a Lake Placid Blue Paranormal Jazzmaster XII. And, once again, it just blows my mind, after resting for 24 hours in the shipping box, it played virtually flawlessly, the action is at a comfortable height and the spacing between the strings is perfect for these small hands to navigate it.

The single coils provide the right amount of jingle jangle and twang, with just the addition of a smidgen of reverb in its output. Jeff Weinstein and Sweetwater delivered yet another impressive instrument! Which Squier will catch my eye next that I can't live without? Will there be a "Not Your Father's Squier, Part Three"? Stay tuned (after I pay my card down)

Just about perfect!

By Sweetwater Customer on August 10, 2023

Just about everything was perfect about this guitar right out of the box. Set up, fit and finish, it was great. No fret sprout of finish flows that I could find. On the first string change I will likely round over the fret ends and roll the fret board edge. But that is totally a preference thing. Not an absolutely necessary. If I could change a couple of thing, I would have a 7.25" radius board, a lower output bridge pickup, and probably standard albino rod magnets in the pickups rather than bar magnets. But again, those are preference issues, not flaws. Overall an amazing buy for those that are 12 string curious.

Pleasantly Surprised

By Geno from Mill Creek, WA on July 12, 2023 Music Background: Playing guitar for over 55 years.

One of my first guitars was a 1966 Fender Shenandoah 12-String, I still have this guitar and always wanted an electric 12-string to match. I was excited to see the new Squire offering but also apprehensive about the neck playability. I decided to order it with the neck plek option. I asked for standard tuning, low action with little buzz.

The neck is amazing! The frets came out great, no buzz, no dead spots. The fret ends need a little rounding but other than that they are perfect. The action, it plays like a strat! The actual neck really surprised me. It's very thin, it measures about the same as a PRS pattern thin neck both in width and thickness. If you like thin necks this won't disappoint.

The pickups, I'm not sure yet. This is my first Jazzmaster so I'm not 100% sure how they should sound. The neck is low powered and sounds a little muddy, the bridge is a little hot and can be ice picky. Combined it sounds good.

All in all it's a nice guitar. And the color, Lake Placid Blue, it's classic. My sales engineer, Zack, was also really helpful.

Note: This didn't come with a gig bag or case. The guitar is too long to fit a normal guitar gig bag, I've got 6 and none fit.

Excellent Guitar For The Price Point

By Patrick M. from Tampa, Florida on July 5, 2023 Music Background: Seasoned bassist and novice guitarist.

I have been playing bass guitar for almost 45 years now and the past few years I began the journey to learn guitar to expand my skill set. I am familiar with the Paranormal series because I own a Paranormal Jazz bass for 2 years. When Squier announced this new Paranormal Jazzmaster XII I knew I wanted it. On 7/1/23 I received mine from Sweetwater and I was immediately impressed with the fit and finish. I ordered the Lake Placid Blue and the color is gorgeous, especially against the Laurel fingerboard, maple neck, and mint pickguard. Upon plugging it in I was equally pleased with the rich sound coming from the two single coil pickups. So far, tuning stability is remarkable once it is tuned and it holds well. Squier's Paranormal series of guitars and basses are fun and well worth the money. This Jazzmaster can easily play at any local indoor or outdoor gig, whether small or large crowds. If you looking for a solid guitar without breaking the bank to buy it, then I would highly recommend the Squier Paranormal or Classic Vibe series. One last note: do not let the fact it is made in China deter you from buying this because the quality in craftsmanship overshadows that fact.

High expectations exceeded.

By Craig from Woodland, CA on June 28, 2023

I learned to play on a Fender Shenandoah. I have always had a soft spot for the 12 strings. I seldom buy new instruments, but when I saw these offered, I pre-ordered one immediately.
The finish on the guitar body and neck is flawless. The fretboard is tight and shiny, glossy smooth. The fretwork is excellent.
I opened the box and checked everything over, no issues or flaws. The action is quite low, but no buzzes or dead spots. I only needed to tune a couple strings, and was playing immediately.
The nut is a little narrow, measuring 1.69" overall and 1.5" E-to-e, but I got used to it quickly. The pickups sound clear, and there is noticeable difference between the three switch positions.
I think this guitar was an incredible value and I enjoy playing it.

What A Surprise!

By Jim from Florida on June 27, 2023

I've always been a snob when it comes a Squire, just didn't like the way they feel. But I wanted a 12 string so I ordered one. Wow, this is really nice guitar. Plays great, sounds great, frets are excellent, QC is impeccable, and it's a Jazzmaster! I can't find anything negative to say. If you're looking for a 12 string, get one before the price goes up, I'm so happy I went for it.

The easiest and best $ I've ever spent on a guitar

By Dean from NJ on June 21, 2023

Squier/Fender did an amazing job with this one! The Paranormal series is really pushing the boundaries and experimenting in all the right ways. The quality of this guitar feels like a Fender with the price of a Squier. It feels solid, plays incredible and the Lake Placid Blue with mint green pickguard look awesome. I have a couple of other 12 string electrics, but they are all double necks, so having this single neck is so much better. The gloss neck finish is great, the pickups sound perfect for this guitar - although I think they sound best in the middle and neck positions, the bridge position is a little too thin for me but the other 2 positions more than make up for it. The bridge looks like it was custom made for this model along with the string tension piece on the headstock. I've seen some people complain about the "hockey stick" headstock, but I love it, it's unique. The only change I would have made would have been to give it a rosewood fretboard instead of laurel, but that's a minor issue. It also came in playable condition, little to no set up needed. I have a feeling this may spawn new interest in 12 strings and I look forward to the results - or we'll have a lot more people playing Hotel California or Stairway to Heaven cover lol. Either way, BUY THIS while you still can at this price - these will be $ next year on the secondary market.

Very unique guitar

By Rob from Oklahoma, USA on June 19, 2023 Music Background: Amateur Musician

I'm not the biggest fan of the hockey stick headstock but everything else about this guitar is wonderful.

The tuners work well, the bridge is fixed so holds tune quite well. The Pao Ferro is light but looks great with this Placid Blue finish.

The pickups are pretty unique, this is my first JazzMaster so I can't really compare to others but they sound fantastic.

I know people can be put off by MiC guitars but the finish on this is every bit as good as my MiM and MiA Fenders, remarkable for the price. The frets are flawless too, to my surprise. I never thought I'd own a Squier as I've got a bunch of Fenders already. Now I own this, the Baritone Tele, and the Bass VI. These do not play second fiddle to anything else in my collection and for the price I can't imagine beating these on value.

Thanks again to sweetwater! Crazy over-packing but that's why they get here undamaged!

If you've wanted a 12 string electric, I can't imagine beating this one!

Excellent Value for money

By Nick Amoroso from Smyrna, TN on August 22, 2023 Music Background: Full-time musician

Today's Sweetwater candy delivery arrived with a perfectly set-up 12-string electric guitar! Thanks again, Ben!

The quality of guitar for the price is just outstanding. Endless amounts of chime from the pickups, and fit/finish is perfect. I'll likely replace the plastic nut, but otherwise - fantastic guitar!

Almost as narrow a nut width as a Rick

By Sweetwater Customer on July 28, 2023

Overall, a nice electric 12 for the $$. I have long thin fingers so I haven't had an issue with the nut width or string spacing. But, mine wasn't very playable until I took off the strings, tightened the truss rod to dead straight, and replaced the strings with an .08- .40 set. Still enough bass and the thinner gauge helps out with spacing between the strings, too. Probably loosened the truss rod a tiny bit maybe 1/12 of a turn to get the strings just off the frets. Almost zero relief at the 8th fret. Still need to intonate but so far so good. Nut 1.65 as opposed to a Rick 1.63, according to this site. If you have big fingers you'd be better off with a Dano 1.78, it would feel roomy compared to this. Pickups are okay, tuners could be better. But, I'd still give it a 4.5.
