Fender Player Jazz Bass - Black with Pau Ferro Fingerboard
I am a beginner bass player and this is my first new bass guitar. I had played other Fender basses to see if the Fender Jazz bass would be my choice guitar to purchase. At this point I am absolutely satisfied with my Fender Jazz bass. It built exceptionally well with quality materials and parts. I am very happy with the choice I made to purchase this bass guitar. Now it's time to put in the work which so far has been something I look forward to each day.
Fender Player JAzz Bass- AWESOME BASS OUTSTANDING VALUE
I have owned a pretty full run of different Jazz Basses... Squiers, Fender MIM Standards, Geddy Lee Bass, etc. This new Fender Player Jazz is a huge upgrade (second to the Geddy Lee I had).
I wondered how this would compare to the MIM Standards and the Player Series is closer to the American stuff from 10 years ago.
It looks and feels deluxe. The pickups sound premium. In the past, with the Standard Series, I would be modding it out. The MIM Standards never felt finished to me, but this Player Series is a different animal. Like I graduated to something professional. The only mods are a new tortoiseshell pickguard, flatwound strings and chrome ashtray covers. And I feel guilty about THOSE mods!
The action is where is should be, nice and low. Fret edges are SLIGHTLY rough, but no biggie. Tuners are super smooth.
The only two things I find real fault with is (A) under the pickguard, the wiring route is exposed. Even my Squiers are solid under the guard and have discreet holes drilled for wiring. Not here. AND (B) I would have loved more of a tinted neck. But those are minor complaints.
The finish on it feels thinner that what I expected... and that's a good thing. I hate the finishes that look and feel like the guitar is covered in 1/4 inch of plastic.
All around, this is an outstanding value!
Great buy!
Excellent sound and extremely comfortable. Hard to beat the quality & price on this monster. As always Tom took care of us. Definitely recommend this product.

Thanks, Sweetwater & my Sales Engineer, Mike Soper, for the advice and assistance in selecting this great bass guitar! My son loves the feel, action and tones that the Player series puts out. Made a great birthday present!
Excellent sound and feel, but...
Most Player Series Jazz and Precision Basses that i've seen have their strings misaligned with respect to the neck. This is obvious from around the 12th fret area and above. When I ordered this, I was bothered by the misalignment and showed a trusted luthier. He said the bridge was off by a few millimeters towards the treble side, hence why the strings have bad alignment.
I've seen a lot of brand new Player Series basses with this problem. Especially the MX20 serial number ones.
OK, but not worth $
Honestly after playing this MIM jazz bass for a few months, I would say if you are looking at purchasing one, save yourself a few hundred dollars and just buy a Squire. You will get pretty much the same quality for MUCH less. I'm not real impressed with the MIM jazz bass. Especially since I paid $ for it. The tone is really good but the action and feel are not good. The fret edges at the bottom of the neck (1st string) are sharp (careful on those quick slide ups). Some of the frets feel a little loose. The bridge saddles are adjusted literally almost all the way up and the frets still buzz a little. For comparison - I have a 30 year old made in USA run-of-the-mill low-on-the-line passive Fender P-bass that I bought new and the quality, action, and feel blows this MIM one away by far, and it never goes out of tune. The MIM one will not stay in tune. I have to keep a tuner plugged in and check it after song (wastes a bit of time for the rest of the band members as we can't jump right into another song). I have tried different types of strings and have tightened the neck all the way too. All in all, it looks great, sounds great, but quality and play-ability are below par for my tastes. It's not horrible, but I don't think it's worth $. I would expect much more but I guess we all need to lower our standards in this day and age (unless you want to shell out 2 grand for a new bass).
