Fender Player Fretless Jazz Bass - 3-Tone Sunburst with Pau Ferro Fingerboard Reviews
First introduced in 1960, the Fender Jazz Bass has withstood the test of time to become one of the most played and recorded instruments here at Sweetwater — and in modern music history! The great Jaco Pastorius famously removed the frets from his Jazz Bass, thus creating a new classic: the fretless Jazz Bass. The Fender Player Series Fretless Jazz Bass celebrates this heritage with upgrades that working musicians will appreciate. With its offset alder body and fast-action maple neck, this J Bass is incredibly comfortable to play and lets you pull off extremely tight runs and grooves with ease. It also delivers the legendary J Bass punch and growl, courtesy of two Player Series Alnico 5 single-coil pickups. Get your groove on with the Fender Player Series Fretless Jazz Bass.

Great Fretless Bass!!
This is a good fretless. Be advised though the action from fretlines 1 to around 5 is really low because the nut is cut really low obviously because its a fretless. I would suggest bigger gauge strings if you want the first position action to be higher just experiment and see what works. LaBella White Nylons are fantastic on this bass as well.
Fretless Heaven
It is my Birthaday and while sitting in my Studio aroumd noon, FedEx dropped off my present. Fender Player Fretless Jazz Bass. I have a MIM Fretted Jazz and an MIM Strat that I have enjoyed for years. This is Quality stuff for a killer price point. I pluuged the new Fretless into my Apollo Quad (from Sweetwater) and pulled up an SSL channel strip. This is "The Sound!". Killer instrument. I will be laying down tracks soon.
Sweetwater has set a high Standard in their customer service, candy, and phone calls (Thanks Jeff!).
The biggest reason I purchased this from Sweetwater is the 55 point check they do on all guitars. The Fretless was set up and ready to go right out of the box. Thank You Sweetwater and Fender, I am in Fretless Heaven.
player fretless bass
I rally like it!! it plays really nice. A friend ask me to do a video with him and he ask please bring the fretless. He noticed a markable difference in the sound and resonance. I'd d tell anyone considering a fretless, this is a very good one. It's a Fender, so it always delivers. I have a Jaco fretless, but it took years torquier it, but this one I have no problem taking out on a gig. the guys at Sweetwater can answer any questions you might have about the bass. The price is RIGHT!!
Stepped Up!
I've had a few MIM Fender basses over the years, particularly Jazz basses. Had a strong desire to have another fretless Jazz to work out on (fretless can be very meditative), so I took a long hard look at this new "Player Series" line Fender has come out with.
Long story short - this bass immediately felt much improved over the ones I've had in the past, right down to the smooth playing Pau Ferro fretboard. The finish on the neck was surprisingly smooth and fast. I tune to drop D + 1/2 step down as a rule - and the low notes held fast. The pickups were possibly the biggest surprise; in the past I've almost immediately replaced Jazz pickups with hand wound aftermarket (I won't say the brand) - but these delivered all the punch and richness I expect from a Jazz bass.
I love that Sweetwater has photos to see of the actual instrument you are buying. It really helped in picking this one out. Played great right out of the box. Now is the time to grab a MIM Fender, IMO. Cheers!
Good Bass for Home Recording
I have been using this bass for sseveral years. It has proved to be an inexpensive studio work horse.
Fun Bass!
This bass really is a ton of fun. It's hard to put down once you start playing it. The biggest pleasant surprise for me was how quiet the pickups are. They aren't noiseless, but they're definitely less noisy than I expected. A shout out to my sales engineer, Alden. He was very good listening to my concerns, and helped me with this purchase. If you're looking for a fretless, you could do a lot worse than this one.
happy thats affordable
was not expecting a bass this nice for that kind of money. Out of the box it was nice, the feel of the neck was nice, been wanting a fretless bass did not want to go so cheap that it didn't feel right and did not want to spent lots and not like this new player series is the ticket and buy at Sweetwater knowing its coming out of the box ready is good the low end on this bass is off the wall great this new line by fender is the way to go
Great Fretless Bass
Great bass that gets you into other fretless J Bass world. It's what it says it is. And that's a good thing.
And of course, thank you Alberto Rosado, you're always a great help and a great representation of Sweetwater's constant amazing service.
I’m giving the replacement a chance....
Well, the first one showed up and all appearances were good. The finish was great, the hardware was passable and the Pickups are a pleasant surprise. Then, upon closer inspection, I can start to feel an issue with the fretboard. Every Plastic Fretline is suffering from fret sprout. On a fretted instrument, this usually isn’t so bad and a quick trip the luthier will fix things in no time. On a Fretless, the fix isn’t as easy. Every fretline felt like a little speed bump on the board. Nope. Not a keeper. Having to get the board fully sanded is beyond expectation for a new Fretless. Anyway, customer service has been good and I’m awaiting my replacement. Fingers crossed.
Not the One
Biggest problem: there are shallow mounds where the frets would normally be. Seems like a de-fretted fingerboard, not a fretless fingerboard to me. Even after making several adjustments, the action on this bass is still pretty high; very finger-tiring and uncomfortable to play with any kind of feel or dexterity. I have much lower action on my fretted basses, with no buzz. And glissing across the length of the fingerboard does not produce the smooth change in pitch I believe it should, instead, you can hear the stepped changes in pitch as your finger summits each little "fretless" mound. The pickup sound is not too bad, but the serious issues with this poor effort make this something you should probably pass on. My advice to serious bass players: save up for something better. If they just solved the problems with the fingerboard/neck it might be an okay little bass.
