Squier Classic Vibe '60s Jazz Bass - Daphne Blue Reviews

4-string Electric Bass with Poplar Body, Maple Neck, Indian Laurel Fingerboard, and 2 Single-coil Pickups - Daphne Blue

First introduced in 1960, the Jazz Bass has withstood the test of time to become one of the most played and recorded instruments in modern music history. Inspired by the original, the Squier Classic Vibe '60s Jazz Bass is an incredibly affordable instrument with the classic J Bass offset-waist body, fast-action neck, and dual single-coil pickups. Squier's Classic Vibe '60s J Bass is remarkably comfortable to play and lets you pull off extremely tight runs and grooves with ease. Of course, it also delivers the legendary punchy bass sound you can only get from a pair of Jazz Bass pickups.

Beautiful bass, Fantastic service

By Will from NY on January 4, 2024

This bass surpassed my expectations. I didn't need a professional instrument as I'm just figuring out basses. Sweetwater set this bass up perfectly, the quality is not what I expected, smooth fret board, not a single sharp fret end, tuning is on point.
The bass has that wicked jazz bass sound, no pickup hum/buzz.
I also grabbed a Fender Rumble 40, perfect for what I need.
I gotta give a shoutout to Brian Hughes, he's been super responsive for all my purchases (Gretsch Rat-Rod, Fender Strat).
If you're on the fence about this bass, hit that "add to cart" button, no regrets!

Great Value

By M. Smith from FL on October 11, 2021

I bought this bass for jam sessions that I could sweat on it and let other people use it. After playing it for a while, it has become my favorite bass out of three that I own.

Don't let the price fool you!

By Ed C from Niagara Falls on October 6, 2021 Music Background: Semi-Pro Studio Musician

Don't let the price fool you! This bass will go head-to-head and toe-to-toe against its Fender counterpart. I bought this along with the Classic Vibe 60's P-Bass and have not been disappointed with either.

Out of the box, you will most likely need a setup. If you don't know how to do a setup yourself, have Sweetwater do it for you.

5 stars

Plays and sounds the same as the "Fender Performer series", and the price makes me feel like I didn't waste $ since I'm not really a bass player lol.

Seriously excellent

By Jacob F. from OR on May 11, 2021 Music Background: Professional studio and gigging musician, teacher

This bass had a flawless finish (I inspected very closely every inch and am stunned), and after my own little lowering of the action (it came pretty high) and adjusting the intonation at the bridge, this thing is an excellent studio and gigging bass. I got it for my music school for my students, but I have had a hard time putting it down, myself. I have a $2k custom bass, and I will gladly swap this out if need be just to get that classic Jazz bass tone.

The color combination between the body, vintage tinted neck, indian laurel fretboard, and tortoise pickguard is also just about the best I have ever seen on a bass. The body is a bit more sky blue in person, but I really dig it. The only thing that makes me go back to my custom bass is the finish on the neck. This Jazz bass neck is glossy, and I might be sanding it down, as I like to get around the neck quickly. Besides that, I am completely impressed by the finish, the sound, and the playability of this bass.

Great Bass (esp for novices)

By Sweetwater Customer from RI on April 25, 2021 Music Background: 40+ years on horn, novice on bass

1 month in and enjoying every minute. picked it up b/c i always wanted to learn/play bass. only question, which one (active vs passive, jazz vs precision vs pj) and Simon talked me, well emailed me, through the whole process.
Sweetwater is the best, been ordering instruments (electric piano, gretsch hollow body, signature strat, for family members) for a while, and the order arrived as scheduled and securely packed. but since it was winter, had to let it acclimate to the house temperature and the 24 hour wait to unbox and play was the only downside.

as for the bass, great starter bass, 34" scale, solid construction, great sound, tons of tones when adjusting pickup volumes and tone, and the color blue, caps it all off. a bass i look forward to growing into...

Amazing quality for the price

By Gary Dotson from Riverview, MI on December 19, 2020

Very happy with this purchase. The Daphne blue and tortoise shell pickguard looks gorgeous. Fretwork was great on mine, and the fretboard looks great but needed a bit of oil. Sounds great, and plays great after a few adjustments. Highly recommended!

Incredible bass - at any price

By Scott Draper from Ames, IA on November 27, 2020 Music Background: Experienced musician. Keyboards, guitar, bass, and uke

I purchased this bass primarily due it being rated as the number one bass under $650 in Bass Player magazine in 2019. The first bass that shipped had a problem with intonation and some fretboard markings. Jim and Toni at Sweetwater were incredible and I was sent a replacement that was flawless. And setup perfectly. This bass might play better than any of my other three, with one of them being a Fender American Performer precision at three times the cost. Pickups are outstanding and very linear in both volume and tone response. Love the Indian laurel fretboard and especially after cleaning with a fretboard wipe. Color is amazing (Daphne Blue). Everything about this bass is stellar. Highly recommended provided you get a good one that is properly setup.

Perfect and a great value

By Jon Wilson from Albany, GA on October 27, 2020

Plays great and sounds great right out of the box with low action and no additional set up work needed. Excellent value for someone who wants a bass for recording as it makes the sound that you need. Solo the bridge pickup for an aggressive tone. All you need in a bass.

Great Bass, Great Price

By Sweetwater Customer from NJ on October 19, 2020 Music Background: Bass Player 30+ Years

I bought this bass as a budget bass with the intention of converting it to an inexpensive 62 AVRI clone. When the bass arrived, it was in flawless condition, no damage of any kind. The neck relief was spot on out of the box, I only had to adjust the action and intonation a little bit. The frets were dressed appropriately and I found no sharp edges or raised/unseated fret. Once the adjustments were done, I went about comparing the sound to my current #1, an 09 Geddy Lee Jazz Bass. Wow! I could hardly tell the difference between the two when I recorded them side by side. Definitely held it's own.

I have since completed the 62 AVRI conversion, added some Fender Pure Vintage 64 pickups and a stack knob control plate, and I've gotta say, what an impressive instrument. I really can't tell it apart from a 60s Roadworn or a Flea bass, other than the color. I would highly recommend this bass to anyone out there.

Such a beauty

By Mayra from Florida on June 17, 2020 Music Background: Bass player

Happy with my decision to purchase this Bass. Plays like a charm and sounds beautiful the compliments I'm receiving make me happier with my choice!!! Female bass player here not many girly colors out there and this is just a beauty !!!! I did notice a tiny nick on the pick guard but it's not noticeable the only reason I saw it was when I was taking the plastic seal other than that not going lower my rating still such a beauty.

Better than expected.

By Dustin from Missouri on June 3, 2020

Very solid build quality and set up to factory specs when it arrived. First bass for the missus and she loves it. I've been playing for a fair amount of time and am truly impressed with the packaging, delivery and customer service offered by Sweetwater for this instrument. Made a long term customer out of this household.

Vintage goodness

By DW from Central Texas on May 14, 2020 Music Background: 40 years playing bass, audio engineer.

If you close your eyes and pick up this bass, you won't know it's not an American vintage jazz bass. When you open your eyes, things get even better. This is a beautiful instrument and I can find no flaws in its craftsmanship. Plays and sounds much better than expected. Sweetwater is always amazing. Very happy with this purchase.

Unbeatable bass for the money

Excellent quality, fit and finish. Plays like a dream, looks great and solid as a rock. My new go- to bass. Fender hit a home run with this one.

Love this Bass!

By Michael Carson on March 3, 2020

Shoutouts to my dude Greg O'Keefe for sharing and helping me purchase this bad boy! This is my first bass I have owned and I am not disappointed. It has a great tone and is super fun to play. The color on the bass looks fantastic-- I've already gotten a ton of compliments on it. The only thing better than the bass is the service! Thanks again to Greg and the entire Sweetwater team for helping me out!

Sweet...

I love this bass. Sweetwater's 55 point inspection before shipping is phenomenal. This purchase i did without assistance but on other items i have bought from Sweetwater, I've had great assistance in helping me choose the right item for my needs. Plus, they send CANDY!

WOW!

Great! Better than expected....

Beautiful and plays great!

By MH from California on September 1, 2019

The setup on this was perfect to my taste—and that"s rare! The bass looks, sounds, and feels excellent. I"m really picky and skeptical about buying gear online and Sweetwater did not disappoint! I bought a Squire VM Jazzmaster from GC and it was crap right out of the box; had to take it in to get setup—I totally should have went with Sweetwater then! Now I know where I"m getting my gear from now on, and I"m so happy with my Jazz Bass. Thanks guys!!

Rocking out hard

My J Bass arrived in perfect condition. The color is a hit and it plays and sounds like a dream. My first Squire and my second bass from SweetWater. I play it almost every evening after work to unwind and refresh my mind. Time flies when I'm in the zone

Ooooo bass I like

Great bass for the money

By Dean McMaster from Wenatchee on April 30, 2019 Music Background: Professional

After spending a few minutes setting up my new Squire vintage 60's Daphne blue Jazz bass I'm thrilled with it's looks and tone. My main bass is a Rickenbacker 4003S but I'm sure that I will be playing this a lot. The bass definitely needed to be set up, neck had slight bow, intonation was off, I would think that they would do a better job of it before leaving the shop but fortunately I know what I'm doing.

Great bass, especially for the price!

By Keith from Nashville, TN on August 30, 2022

Buy with confidence. Even though it may say Squier on the headstock, it is very much a good bass. The neck is smooth. Frets are filed well. Electronics are solid. The fretboard is a little chalky but not too bad. The only thing I noticed is that it needs a setup for the action and intonation. After that, you've got a very capable bass with a wide variety of sounds. I especially like it for Rush and Yes-style prog rock bass sounds with my Sansamp YYZ pedal.

Solid Jazz Bass

By Brian Barnes from Westfield, MA on April 15, 2022 Music Background: Weekend Warrior, Worship Bass and Keys

Bass arrived from Sweetwater as always, overpacked and sealed up tight. I am always appreciative of the way they ship stuff. No one does it better. I was a tad disappointed in this bass when I first opened it up due to the fact that there was a substance all over the Indian Laurel fret board. It was like a greasy film/dirt. Some frets had some glueish substance around them and it just wasn't appealing. Not a huge deal as simply cleaned the board with a rag and some warm water and it all came off. I played it a few times and a bunch of black grit from dirty strings or the fret board, came off on my fingers...but again, no crime here. SW said to ship it back, but why would I? Its a great bass and a rag and some elbow grease cleaned it right up.

The bass itself: Really really good. IMHO, not as good as my MIM P-bass, but its not supposed to be. The build quality is tremendous. Fit and Finish is stunning. Neck is smooth and easy to play. Pickups are great. Minimal 60HZ hum when using individual pickups, in fact much better than I thought it would be. almost none. Pots have excellent resistance, tuners...ok I guess. Not much to say but they seem to need tweaking more than my previous 70's CV but again...not a deal breaker by any means. My biggest gripe is the bridge. They have ridges now all along the saddles instead of one groove and it seems much lighter than past bridges. It may just be the new design, but its the one thing I may actually change fairly soon. However, its functional and holds well. I am just being picky.

I really like the most recent offerings from Squier. Everyone raves about Sire and they are really good as well, but the Squiers keep up with them as far as passive instruments go. The fit and finish are a draw in my mind. YMMV.

Lastly, the Daphnie Blue is killer. I'm still getting used to the Indian Laurel Fretboard as I've only played maple necks and FB's in the past. Its growing on me and I quite like the slightly warmer tone I think I'm getting. Could be my imagination, but a little lemon oil and TLC and it looks and feels great!

I would highly recommend this bass. I would play it stock at any gig and it would do very well. The pickups project well and the neck is smooth and fast. A solid 4.0 instrument to my way of thinking. Will last a long time and serve any intermediate bass player very well. I am sold on the new Squier's.

Squier Classic Vibe '60s

By Sweetwater Customer on April 18, 2019

Awesome sounding jazz bass. Both pickups offer a wide range of sounds and don't sound weak at all. The finish and coating are really well done with no complaints there. All in all I am very satisfied with this purchase.
